Where do you put an LED in an Alp switch?

If the switches doesn't already come with an LED, then the housing won't have holes that you can insert the LED. ALPS switches that come with LEDs have slightly different housing than the ones that don't have LEDs, unlike MX cherry switches where housings are all the same.

Totally guessing here but but I would think the LEDs are probably SMD on the PCB directly to the side of the switch.

I can't seem to find that thread where you pulled that image, as I'm only on a mobile platform right now with no access to a real PC. However, your answer is right there in one of the next images. They are lit from underneath, through the hole in the PCB designed for the Cherry switch mount.

Okay, so I've got a couple questions. As it hasn't really had any effect on my keyboarding, I haven't spent too much time worrying about keycaps, but I'm curious about where I can get some more information on the different types of plastic, and some benefits of the different types. Also, I'd love to see a pic or two illustrating thin vs med vs thick PBT, just so I have a reference. What are generally considered more preferable, and are there any quantifiable reasons?

1) I'm curious about where I can get some more information on the different types of plastic, and some benefits of the different types.
2) Also, I'd love to see a pic or two illustrating thin vs med vs thick PBT, just so I have a reference.
3) What are generally considered more preferable, and are there any quantifiable reasons?

1) There's a bit of info that can be found here and here. Regardless, common types of keycap plastics are ABS, PBT, and POM.
2) If you don't get a picture by 1800 EST today, PM me and I'll post a picture here for you. I believe I still have pictures of PBT caps but if not, I can show you the ABS caps I have in thick and thin.
3) Thick PBT and ABS seem to be the most popular. Thick ABS are generally found from Cherry/GMK. Thick PBT are usually from imsto. It's all personal preference. Some people swear by thick PBT. I just sold my set off because I love thick ABS. The thicker caps feel nicer and more solid versus say SP ABS caps or Vortex Thin PBT caps.

This used to be in the OP... *grumble, grumble*

which is better? thick pbt or abs gmk?

That's like asking which is better, Ferrari or Lamborghini? :P

They're both awesome.

Red, brown, and blue switches all use the same spring.
The black should be in the middle of the weights.
The white should be heaviest.

I don't actually know if the springs look different since I didn't look at them that hard but they might have different coil counts.

Some keys are really hard to push, and sometimes they take a while to return up.

Is there some guide / known way to fix this?

You'll want to look for fohat.dig's guide on bolt modding. He explains how to clean the board and if you want, how to bolt mod the board. It just sounds dirty.

Could also be because a previous owner removed some of the key guides under the double-size keys, and re-inserted them incorrectly.  Do you have single-space keys sticking, or only the Return, Backspace, and Enter keys?

Sounds like it's beyond the scope of a "simple answer."   :-\

Best approach would be a thorough Model M cleaning, then figure out if you need to pursue the bolt mod option.  I've done one, it's not tough, but time-consuming.

I'm thinking about having these modded onto my board: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100pcs-2x3x4mm-2x3x4-mm-Rectangle-White-Diffused-LED-Leds-Lamp-Free-Resistors-/321161076422?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ac6b11ec6

It says: "This is for 100pcs 2x3x4mm Rectangle White Diffused LED Leds Bulb Light Lamp + 100pcs 1/4W 470ohm Resistors"
Will those resistors work for our keyboards? Poker 2
Quote from another thread. Thought id ask here too for more exposure. Thanks

Doesnt the Poker 2 already have SMD resistors for the PCB since there is a backlit version? Doesnt make sense to make 2 diff PCBs. I dont think you'll need the resistors.

Definitely check or take a pic of the PCB so we can verify but no, I don't think so. DOUBLE CHECK THOUGH. I'm not responsible if you dont verify yourself and break something.

I will be taking apart my massdrop poker II when it arrives.

I couldn't find a picture of a poker II pcb on my quick search, but it was not an in depth search at all.

I'm pretty sure my nonbacklit pure I'm using does not have resistors, but I can doublesheck if anyone is interested.

Doesnt the Poker 2 already have SMD resistors for the PCB since there is a backlit version? Doesnt make sense to make 2 diff PCBs. I dont think you'll need the resistors.

Okay so I can just buy LEDs and install them? :o

There are already SMD resistors, although I haven't checked the value of them. Ideally you'd want to match resistor value with the LED voltage, but I think most color and voltages should be ok.

You need to remove solder from the holes first (the small circle and square holes), install LED, clip excess leads, then solder. Pay attention to polarity. Here is a pic of poker2 PCB from my review thread:
