Possible to whiten the gray keys on a Model M?

I want to dye all the keys on a Model M.  Is there any way to whiten plastic, or is there any paint that would actually work on those keys?

I have seen yellowed keys whitened with peroxide but I don't think you will be able to get the grey dye out of the original plastic.
Any spray paint will stick but then it will wear off in time.
Even if you use a durable clear coat it will still wear I'm afraid.

I don't think there is a way to get them to stay white.

Maybe start from the opposite approach-- at least for the standard-sized keys, you could substitute a white blank or sanded-clean keycap and add lettering yourself.
