The significance of this is that the potential "happiness" derived from Heroin is cheaper than that of "FOOD"
In Afghanistan, Milk = ~$1.00 USD
A liter of milk isn't even close to the "reward-feels" of 1gram of heroin..
It illustrates that our fleshy emotions and pursuit of happiness has been completely subverted by human technological prowess
Happiness is a physical condition.. it's our only tangible evidence for having "done the right action"
But now that we can essentially fabricate this "evidence" cheaply in many forms, How then are we suppose to trust any and all motivation..
The opposite end of this is vulcanism, yet, while their outward demeanor is clearly defined, their base motivation is an impossibility and at best a paradox.
This really puts first world problems into perspective.. I am thoroughly ashamed of myself complaining that my microwave popcorn didn't fully pop today..

converted to potatoes, that's 1333.33kg worth..
or rather.. 1 million calories.. or 500 days worth of calories @ 2000 calories diet..
This makes it impossibly hard to decide between food or heroin.
Which would account for their now drug epidemic..

You realise it's that cheap there because it's grown there right? Everybody in Afghanistan grows Opium Poppy because it's the most profitable thing to grow. The government will pay you money to grow wheat, that's before you even sell it. So farmers grow wheat on the outside of their fields and poppy in the middle to get the money from the government and the money from the Taliban for the poppy.
Then we wonder why they don't like ISAF when we set fire to their poppy fields.
The point you are making, is like wondering why oil is cheaper in the USA, Saudi Arabia and Iraq than in the UK or France. It's made there, by the lowest bidder, and there is no transportation cost and limited production costs. It's the definition of supply and demand.

I think the issue isn't the fact of growing heroin there, it's the lack of legislation and the subsequent power vacuum left when the American military pulled out.
If we look at Africa, the same thing happened when British imperialism collapsed..

The actual "shipping weight" is very low.. probably within 20 metric tons per year..

Well, I know that, it was just a joke while looking at this. It's obvious that the main cost comes form the fact that it's illegal...
The economics in these stricken countries is what's all wrong, FORCING them to choose heroin instead of food..
Hopefully this is just transitional and not endemic..
The current entire 5% of the population who are addicts in that country is pretty much doomed.. because they have no resources to save them in time.
relapse rate is 25% for users who've quit for 50 years...
Heroin is game breakingly addictive.

It's really hard to use the term abuse here.. because if we really look at it.. we were DESIGNED to chase as much of this "high" as possible, BY ANY MEANS..
it just happens that Opioid substance is SO GOOD, that it breaks homeostasis.
