I think if I were to make it in the group that gets the gold stab wires I'd go with a gold case. Other than that I'm torn on what I would want.

This is something I'm really looking forward to.

I like some of these colored renders, but dies anyone else feel apprehensive about choosing a color that might potentially limit your cap options on such a pricey custom board?

I am in that boat, but it's really personal preference.  I am sure that there will be MOQ attached to the color options, or only a few offered. I wouldn't worry if you want a more neutral color there will be at least one sort of grey/silver offered (assumption on my part). I know i will be jumping on a darker gey/gunmetal if that option is offered. Otherwise, i will asses what is there and get the next best one i like, be it silver, black, etc etc..

Yes, these colors are mostly just for fun. It is likely that the final buy will contain only one or two of these "exotic" colors.

I like seeing all of the pretty renders, but I'm fairly locked into a grey colour, unless there's a blue that really grabs me.

Need to round off those sharp edges inside the arrow cluster with the same radius as the rest of the corners.

I had this conversation earlier with Zeal. Many customs such as the Corsa or the 356cl have those two corners un-filleted. Honestly when I use the same radius it looks weird. I may add a more subtle curve, but overall it will probably stay that way.

I just checked a few of my Aluminum boards.  You're right.  For example, the Cheat rounds those corners but with much smaller radius.  Looks like KMAC uses the same small radius on all the internal corners.

The WKL blocks are sharp-cornered, too. It's because they're outside corners, unlike the rest which are inside corners.

For those without manufacturing experience, you can't machine a sharp inside corner because spinning mills will always cut round. You can minimize this fillet/radius by using a smaller cutter, but only to a point. The only way to fabricate a sharp inside corner would be casting or die-punching, neither of which yield the same beautiful result as a milled piece.

I'm currently transitioning to 60% boards but I really want to see this board made.  I think the Mira will put the KMAC and the 356 to shame.  The right key set on this board is going to take it to the next level.  Something with a full SA profile would look good, but really, this board needs a key set designed specifically for it.

Design it! :D

I used the custom key set designer on WASD to create this and added a mockup of one of Booper's astronaut key caps.

(Attachment Link)

With the site's limited color options, I tried to make a colorway inspired by the lunar surface.  I think it would look good on the gray keyboard in the OP and on the pink render created by Zeal.  But I think the Mira needs a more polished design for its key set.

I tried making something to reflect the theme of the binary star but it looks awful.

Image of Mira
(Attachment Link)

It's not practical, but I think a set of backlit black keys without alphanumeric legends but with legends resembling the night sky would look awesome.  The assembled alpha and mod keys would look something like this.

(Attachment Link)

I like the greys, but not so sure about the legends they are a little bland.

I'm not to fond of the second one either.

I think Cospar wouldv'e been perfect for this. Shame this never took off (No pun intended :p).

just curious: is the logo milled into/ through the surface or is it a sticker? If milled, any chance of ordering without? It's a cool design, don't get me wrong, jus not a fan of logos.

i see the logo as one of the design elements which identifies this board and makes it unique, if your looking for no logo there are other options out there in the market and upcoming.

I am not the biggest fan of the acrylic insert, i would prefer to be able to use a alu insert and possibly in a different color, although i don't see this being feasible in the as i am probably a minority.

Well I havent heard back from CNC shops yet, depending on the cost there may be an engraved logo option. Either way there is nothing stopping you from not installing the logo LEDs

Not that the acrylic would keep me from getting one. It just wouldn't be lit up.

Would opting out of the acrylic and replace it with the engraving drive down the cost? If so about how do you think? Don't get me wrong the LED logo is really neat, but I'm just curious.

Engraving could only be cheaper, since it's basically the same cut but at only .030" deep instead of through the top plate.

For me, i am really not sure if i would use it with LED's or not under the logo, i would like to see it in action or test it myself to see how i felt.

Then if i didn't like it and there was an option for the alu insert i would jump on it, if not to change the feel every now and then. But yeah, i have accepted that if there is only the acrylic insert that is fine by me.

just to be clear, the LEDs are not underneath the insert, they are part of a LED strip that gets mounted sideways. The light will not point directly at you. As for engraving vs acrylic, it would likely drive down cost for engraving. I am still waiting for price quotes though.

Is the possibility of skipping the acrylic insert in favor of engraving being considered, because I happen to think that the acrylic insert is one of the aspects of keyboard that makes it unique. It would be disappointing to see it changed. I have no problem with being given the option of having the insert or an engraved logo when we order, though.

Big dilemma, I like all of these colors and I can't choose just one. Dark gray is my first choice, but blue or gold looks great too. I can't afford to buy two, but I might just have to.

I would probably end up choosing either a dark grey or bluish grey

Have dr hubble or henry zeal said anything official about anodization colors or are they just posting random mock ups?

I don't think anything is set in stone until quotes are obtained from relevant places to see how many colors can be offered while keeping the buy affordable as possible

Down for number 69 in lime green ;) (btw, I'll gladly pay for a custom anno color if it comes down to it)

Just for fun:

*note to self: don't render with a black background, the sides become grainy.

If this color is allowed, I'll be instabuying.

I would actually prefer this compared to the acrylic and the engraving. It seems like a good middle ground for having something really unique and for the folks that don't want the clear acrylic.

The only question I have would be would it wiggle? Like would it be a good snug fit?

CNC milled out of what? A different kind of metal?

CNC machines are so precise and so repeatable that "wiggle" would be a non-issue. In fact, the acrylic insert is likely going to be CNC-machined to fit the cutout.

Played around with some colour options last night.

Graphite/Dark Gray:

Mint or Cyan?

Attempt at replicating TA Mod colour (This one ran overnight for 500+ passes, some colour bleed on the plate as the original render turned out too dark, so I tried to fix it up in PS :( )
