I do want to thank those that have kept this on topic and are submitting entries. I love them all and it does bring a smile to my face to see people participating. As I said earlier, I shall extend this one week until 12/20 at Midnight PST. I'm hopeful that there will be more submissions. As I said in my initial blog post, one of the aims of this blog is to foster a greater sense of community. While some aren't into that - and that's fine - I believe that there are plenty of others that are. I'm excited to see what others can come up with for this contest.
And an aside, tomorrow's blog post may be a bit late but it'll be up at some point tomorrow. I'm not usually this busy but the last month has been hell.

Now, I find myself deeply entangled in this community. My wallet probably hates me for it, but I find it fantastic to have found such a place!

In all seriousness though Geekhack, like many other things you may be involved in, is only as meaningful to you as you make it. You already spend a lot of time here. Why not contribute some more? You never know what might come of it. Maybe you'll teach someone something new. Maybe you'll discover a new hobby or passion. Maybe you'll meet someone(s) cool. Or maybe you'll just feel more of a sense of ownership and self-worth. But you won't know until you dive in.
Personally I've made a lot of friends here, learned a **** ton about many different topics, discovered new hobbies, and had much fun fumbling through DIY projects. It's been a good ride so far and I'm looking forward to seeing what 2015 has in store.

I'm not one to speak up, only when spoken to. I find that a big problem when it comes to me joining communities (which I've done only a handful of times in my few years) because I dont get involved or because it's a new community and it dies out because of it.
I feel I don't really have friends here and that I cant go ask for help or anything because I'm still new here. I say I'm still new here, because there is someone like Sent, who has been here around the same time that I have, but has had a big influence on the community and I'm over here still lurking and only posting when I'm involved in something such as a GB.
There are many helpful people here and I find it very intimidating to ask because I feel I should know more than I do. Something is wrong with me >.>
Getting to the point, joining this contest and reading the blog is a big push toward getting out there and being more involved.

I can't say I approve of the Apple keyboards. Although I do approve that the mechboard to ****board ratio is >1.

I can't say I approve of the Apple keyboards. Although I do approve that the mechboard to ****board ratio is >1.

Yeah I liked the length. I would keep them around an hour or so, it seems like a good length to me. Enough to have some good conversation, but not too long that you can't listen all at once!

The length was perfect, I like when interviews are longer. It makes it feel more complete. Short interviews make me think I'm only getting half the story. You probably already had this idea but an interview with a maker would be sick. Bro, Noko, Binge, Nub, JD, I think it would be cool to learn how they got into keyboards and what inspired them to make products to share with us.

in fact, i doubt he remembers this, but about 6 + months ago i had a conversation with him about my idea for what this blog was, and that i wanted to do community interviews and asked him if he would do it, it took a long time for me to get it going and find the right person to do it (clearly i am not the man for the job) but we are here now

a) Monetary loss - This is something that isn't a big deal in this hobby (Thank god), generally one doesn't make a big loss. I've been involved in other hobbies, where this is a big issue and I had to think twice before I spent my money.
b) Death of enthusiasm - For me this is the big one as I'm a compulsive spender, and I get very very excited about the stuff, even for the smallest thing which people might not even give a second though to, and if that item isn't upto the mark or like I expected it, the hurts man, the hurts.

Yeah, it's odd. I love DSA, usually. I switch between GMK cherry and DSA generally but...something changed, I guess? It makes me sad since I have the Valentine's set on order. I hope I don't hate that one, as well. :(

great post Sent - very relevant to this hobby. I am aware of my own buyer's remorse and have been very careful with what I buy. For example, I am convinced of Topre goodness so I focused only on Topre caps and artisan caps, which fortunately, there are not many variety - I mean, how many RealForce Topre key caps can one get? And there's only two variant of HHKB keycaps (blanks and printed, black or white). So, in a way, I minimize my lust. But still, I succumbed to a recent JD40 by CTRLALT and then GMK Dolch and then 2TU Korean custom. Fortunately, I love all of them and now I am slowly inching my way to collecting artisan caps in MX, lol! As for artisan caps, I think the possibilities of buyer's remorse is EVEN higher, which was what I get with Gas Mask caps, so now I am only focusing on CC and BB, and an occasional Dolly.
This hobby is brutal!
Yeah, I had some intense buyer's remorse with some artisan caps. They're really not for me. :(

So what happened with your EVO X sent? why did the engine blow? how much did it end up costing?
My first motor was defective from the factory. Actually, my snail was screwed. One of the fins wasn't welded on properly and it ended up snapping off while I was blasting through the long sweeper between turns 7 and 8 at Big Willow. The fin rocketed through my motor and tore the guts out. It ended up costing...a lot. A lot a lot. I just ended up rebuilding the motor from the ground up with Cosworth and Cobb to make sure something like that wouldn't happen again. Eventually, I sold the Evo to move into something a bit more calm and comfortable to drive on the streets.
This was a great post today on the blog, I really enjoyed the less interview-like questions, and the more of having a conversation without forced questions, and a stirct agenda to stick to.
There's pros and cons to each type of interview, whether they're more formal or less so. Sometimes it's a good idea to really drill into one subject and other times, it's more beneficial to just sort of be all over the place. Plus, a lot of it depends on who you're talking to. I'm comfortable with whatever but some people do better with more structure and others with less.

Yeah, definitely. I plan on trying to have a lot of variety on the blog. There will be some text interviews as well. Different formats, more or less people, etc. Hopefully there'll be something for everyone.

While being off topic it was still kinda on topic but everything was definitely interesting.
So what happened with your EVO X sent? why did the engine blow? how much did it end up costing?
My first motor was defective from the factory. Actually, my snail was screwed. One of the fins wasn't welded on properly and it ended up snapping off while I was blasting through the long sweeper between turns 7 and 8 at Big Willow. The fin rocketed through my motor and tore the guts out. It ended up costing...a lot. A lot a lot. I just ended up rebuilding the motor from the ground up with Cosworth and Cobb to make sure something like that wouldn't happen again. Eventually, I sold the Evo to move into something a bit more calm and comfortable to drive on the streets.

They voided any sort of warranty I had due to, get this...a shift knob, exhaust, bucket seat, and harness. I fought it but long story short...I lost. Lol.
It was fun having a track car as a street car for a while but it wears on you. Full cage, welded chassis, etc. It's just not practical. Plus, my girlfriend at the time absolutely hated it. :rolleyes: Girls tend to not like harnesses. Gas and tires were a killer, too.

Awesome! Cool to see how many people are looking forward to the same things as me. I'm guessing we may only see 1-3 GMK sets meet MOQ. As for alps popularity, I don't see it booming, but I do see it growing. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the Kingsaver was too expensive. It was my end game alps board though, so I paid my arm and leg for it haha. Really excited to see some new artisans around, and if we get more RGB boards around, I'll be happy.

One thing I would like to ask for in regards to the blog, is an option (or something) to switch the text colour and background colour so that the back ground is white and the text is black, as light text on a black background properly messes with my eyes lol
That's unfortunate because i love dark backgrouds, that's one of the reasons i never venture around DT, because i couldn't find the option to change the color theme so i gave up cause i can't do black on white, i need a dark background.

Willow is alright. It's not my favorite track but a lot of my friends enjoy it. Like you said, it's high speed and for inexperienced drivers, that can be a major issue. Knowing your braking points and which lines you need to take are pretty crucial. Thankfully the runoffs are pretty big but the gravel is god awful. Your car is going to hate you if you go off track, trust me. If you want to get the best times here, you really need a balanced car and a tuned suspension along with plenty of track time. If you ever do go...don't apex too early on the last turn in. They'll be peeling you off of the wall.
And yeah, I've done plenty of events and taken my fair share of driving courses. :) Definitely my first love.

Well, I live in Southern California where the import scene got really big really fast. I knew a lot of the right people at the right time. For example, a lot of my friends had their cars and themselves as extras in the F&F movie series. I regularly attended SEMA and all of the other shows. People saw me at the track, people knew I was involved with others, it just sort of went from there. Like I said, Cosworth rebuilt my motor for me because I knew people that worked there. It's just really about what kind of connections you have, heh. I probably have some photos around here somewhere but most of 'em are long gone. I actually hate pictures and it was only because of GH that I bought my first camera. :))

As someone with pretty strong opinions I often get myself into pickles on forums (and IRL) and rub people the wrong way.
I think I need to work on my vocabulary a little more so some of my 'debates' seem less like personal attacks, as I make the common mistake that you can't really read banter as banter unless you really know the person.
And I think it's important to befriend and surround yourself with people who have differing opinions to you and are able to argue there point, helps you see the bigger picture.

I just finished listening, Binge we should talk about birds sometime, my grandpa has been raising and breeding birds for years. He has more than a hundred in a giant wick building. He mostly breeds Lovebirds, looking for new colors, blues, purples and such. But he also works with a ton of Parrots, Cockatoos, Cockatiels, Macaws, and a ton of small birds that I could never name.

I feel like the 'gotta catch em all' mentality at Geekhack has actually dropped off considerably over the last few years. I remember the early days when I would creep or when I was a new member and seeing the INSANE clack collections people had; Reaper, Dang, Ethos etc and others coming along with lots of cash to try and catch up. All those people left or faded away and there collections got scattered to the winds allowing more and more people access and making it harder and harder for collectors.
Fast forward to the last week or so and suddenly anyone who wants to collect Bro's or CC's is a horrible person and should be ashamed of how they are ruining Geekhack, which is pretty insane because this happens in no other community I've be apart of where rare and collectible things make up a large portion of it. On top of that I can only think of literally one person who would even fall into that category.
Trying to incite your own morals and opinions on to others and dismissing theirs is something we should all be beyond.
Maybe I've taken this the wrong way but I don't see how my MGS collection is intrinsically less valuable to me (or anyone else) than someone with just one MGS Collectors Edition (or something). Or how my collection of 6 Reapers (and my desire for more) makes my value and opinion of the Reapers any less than someone who only has one. I don't see opinions like Sent's or others who share similar opinions as personal attacks, I just don't understand the logic behind them.

True, that last part about value was more the take away I got from your post and others about the subject, judging and qualifying value, based on quantity; IE people who collect caps must value those individual caps less than someone with only one, which while possible isn't a guarantee.
And I agree it would be sad if people thought that to be cool you needed a Bro/Clack or a Korean keyboard, but I'm not really sure that's the case with the vast majority.

reaper was not that public with his collection but he was fairly generous when it came to trades and selling IIRC, and eth0s kept a really low profile. dan DEFINITELY caught flack over it because he was a lot more public with his collection (here and on his blog), so i don't see it as being very different now - there are some 'ultra' collectors who are super secretive about their loot and some who like to show off.

I do agree that there seem to be some people who covet the collection of caps in an unhealthy way. However, more often than not I see a lot of people giving caps away, selling them to people who haven't had a chance to get one yet, or even just generally being generous and kind when handling a trade or sale. As with almost everything there is can be a serious amount of unpleasantness if you look for it (and sometimes even if you don't), but if you can steer away from that and focus on all the good and positive things that go on with cap making, trading, buying and selling, along with the appreciation that all of us have for the artists and their very real and amazing abilities, it comes out on the positive side.
In short, focus on the positive and let those that want to exist int he doldrums stay there. Maybe one day they will find their way out.

I haven't really been keeping up to date with everything the past month or so other than a couple threads so i haven't really been seeing the saltiness but in my opinon that just bound to happen with anything that's difficult to obtain.
Now this is slightly unrelated to anything said but it's something i've been thinking about the past few years as to why we as people/humans so easily value material things and why it's so difficult to get past (maybe that's only a personal experience?) but i've come to the conclusion that it probably began with tools. Now i know what you're thinking, "tools? wtf does that have to do with keycaps or cars?" and really it doesn't have much to do with each other but maybe it's my desperate way to try and get past or understand why i tend to value material things as much as i do. So, tools, without tools humans really can't do ****. I get a package in the mail and i can't get past the tape with my bare hands and need to look for something sharp. I have a steel canned drink and i can't open it and need to find a spoon or something to lift the tab. (i know i'm pathetic) Imagine if i traveled back in time and brought a lighter? i'd be the coolest guy ever.
So in my head tools are in a way material things and we've somehow mixed the value of tools and other items to be just as important as tools to us.
So uhh...wow. I really didn't mean to write all that out and i don't even know if my point came across or if i was just rambling random **** but i'm just going to leave that there since i put the effort into writing it lol

reaper was not that public with his collection but he was fairly generous when it came to trades and selling IIRC, and eth0s kept a really low profile. dan DEFINITELY caught flack over it because he was a lot more public with his collection (here and on his blog), so i don't see it as being very different now - there are some 'ultra' collectors who are super secretive about their loot and some who like to show off.

Of course with anything in life there is going to be some negativity and I have to keep reminding myself to focus on principals not personalities and to exhibit integrity in all my affairs. I'm guilty sometimes of letting myself get caught up in the bull**** but I'm usually able to shake it off pretty fast and to remember why I'm here. I'm here because I love keyboards, building them,modding them,typing on them and this community, meeting other keyboard and keycap fanatics, learning from them, laughing with them and celebrating this crazy hobby we all share and have in common.
