[IC] DeskDaily Pod Mounting Kit
« on: Fri, 28 October 2022, 04:56:53 »
PODS by DeskDaily

The "Pod Mounting Kit" is a mounting solution to those who want to convert their top mount boards to a more bouncy (flexy) build or those who wants to go plateless but their boards don't support it.

The design was inspired from the "SIMP Kit" by sony but I made improvements that I think will result to a better typing feel. It is going to be made with a soft material, specifically silicon, to achieve the give that gasket mount provides. I made the bottom of the pod spherical to allow more squish compared with a cuboidal shape.

Theoretically, it should be compatible to all boards (regardless of the original mounting method) but it won't be effective on tray mount boards because the standoffs will not allow the pcb to flex/bounce.

The dimensions of the POD was determined based on what I think is the common measurement that most boards uses. You can refer to the image below for these measurements.

More details:
    • Material: Silicon
    • Softness Rating: 30A (can also offer 50A if there is demand)
    • Tentative Color: Pink
    • Price: TBA ( will be sold in packs of 8 )

Would be interesting to see if the theory applies well to practice.
Will be watching for possible prototypes. The idea seems great if it works well!

Looks promising, but won't it provide bounce instead of flex? I think that the POD won't be stiff enough to make the PCB flex, while the spherical shape on the bottom will provide bounce. If this happens, the final result won't change the flex, and it will be somewhat similar to an oring mount(?)

Yeah you're right. Changed some of the terms.

And yes it should have same effect as the oring mount

Can’t wait for a test, always looking for more o-ring alternatives…

Would be nice if it came in a more neutral colour like a clear or beige to fit more builds but that’s super minor. Good work and good luck! :D

I think for traymount boards you just need to file down the mounting posts, which I agree is a one way conversion.
Very interested, looking forward to the prototype :D

Just ordered some prototypes. I think I will proceed with more neutral colors so I ordered them in beige. Softness is 30A and 50A.

Yeah for some boards, you might need to hack the case if ever you're 100% decided on converting it from tray/top mount.

One of the limitations as well is the usb port. Some cases might have a tight clearance on the usb port

This is a very neat idea. There are a couple boards whose design I love but skipped on due to the mounting style so this would be a heavensent.

Looks great, in for both 30A and 50A if you’re still doing both :)

very cool! keeping my eye on this, 50a even 70a could be exciting as id likely try plateless with this solution.

Are you able to offer a size compatible with 1.2mm PCBs… similar to TX stabs? It would be a bit of a bummer if I can’t use these.
