How so? You can mix and match.
Those are for the bottoms. "Choose bottom colour as well". It's a 2-part case: top + bottom.
So these are basically lightsaver 2.0? How do they compare?
They look incredibly nice regardless o.o
Oh boy, I am really tempted to pull the trigger on this one, but 400$ plus international shipping plus import taxes is tough.
But just like the Lightsaver this board only comes in the angled version right? I prefer to use my keyboards flat on the table...
Will there eventually be a group buy for the 60% keyboards that are from this same family?
Also, on topic, this is beautiful and quite tempting...

Do you have any more pics?
An update..Very Greatttttttttttttt :D You 'll change form with option PCB?
1. PCB alone will cost $43
I'll find out about the acrylic plate drawing.
"Deadline for order is TBD". I don't understand :( What does the mean"TBD" ?
OK thanks :)"Deadline for order is TBD". I don't understand :( What does the mean"TBD" ?
To Be Determined
Definitely want the acrylic piece! As well, this is just barebones, so I'm assuming no LED customization apart from the base red?i think you can change the LED under pcb by yourself, they dont accept order for change color or acrylic part

I was actually worried about the 11-degree angle, as I love the flat profile of a Filco without its feet extended, but in practice it turned out to be a pleasant angle, and I have no issues with it. At least for the Lightsaver, the front of the case is quite low--this one might be better with a wrist rest.

So 11 degrees is lower than a Filco with extended feet? Maybe I can live with it too ;D

100 MOQ for a 60% board is hard to reach I guess. A lot of people have multiple 60% boards now. Anyway, thanks for the info. What is "the other thread"?
Hey Elton
Do you have a rough estimate of when production and shipping will happen? I may have to eventually change my shipping address based on when the boards are ready.
Thanks for any help :)
Also, if there are more than 15 sets ordered, price will drop to $385.
Also, if there are more than 15 sets ordered, price will drop to $385.
Closing in on 15?
It's definitely unassembled
I think we just gotta find our own switches and pcb mount cherry stabs
And anyone got tips as to where to buy square LEDs? Mouser?
There's a software to program it?
Is there a MOQ? Or just a decrease in price with orders over 15.Just a decrease in price
Some more specs on the PCB and Plate>
1. What controller is the PCB using?
2. Are the "flood" LEDS... i.e. the LEDs being used to illuminate the bottom exterior of the housing... are those SMD?
3. does the plate support switch mods?
And then concerning the manufacturer: "DUCK" is written all over this stuff... is this being produced/designed by the same people who make Ducky Keyboards?
Cheers,
K

I don't. Please enlighten me
I have to admit, the wording is pretty vague. It's still unclear if you're including this keyboard into your "top" list or not :) Anyway, seeing as I own a LightSaver (typing on it right now), I can attest to the great quality of Duck's work.
Yup! Media thread here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=53942.0) and a flickr album here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/photoelectric_effect/sets/72157640117516876/). It's got SIP sockets in every switch, and I've been meaning to settle on a final color combination, but been too busy. The magenta and teal LEDs are getting taken out for sure.
anyway i submitted order.
do check if it's there :) thanks!

So all I need to get now is switches, stabilizers, and potentially LEDs for key backlighting (do I need resistors too?). Naive question, but what LEDs are compatible?

Ordered Silver top with black base. Think that will look nice?
Pretty sure I want silver, not sure of the base though.
Edit: I'm thinking it will be too much of a contrast. I'm going to switch to silver with gray base.

When are orders closing then? ;)
Currently there are 5 US orders. I can ship them together.
2 Orions are about 5.5-6kg, so 5 Orions would be around 15kg which is about $152 USD (161,700 WON)
Add about 3kg for each additional Orion set.
Yeah, sadly $400+ is way too rich for me. It would be better to get one of the buyers to proxy. I'd be more than willing to proxy if no buyer wants to step up, but I can't swing the price for the keyboard.
I can proxy if you'd be kind enough to lend packing and procedure advice nubbinator.
EDIT: Only if the rest of the US orderers think it will be worth it.
Not sure I'm comfortable with a proxy :/
Hi elton5354,I think you may look for gon or zenuty, they are pretty good in providing services to fellow ghers :)
I'm interested in this keyboard, one of the best looking keyboard I've ever seen! However, I'm living in Japan and don't know how to build the keyboard, I don't know anyone that can help me too. Do you know anyone in Korea that can do this (fully build the keyboard) and ship to Japan?
Thanks!

Hey what is the name of this TKL pcb?
1. No you can chooseThat's great. Sorry, I should have been clearer on the fourth one. I was wondering if they were RGB because the pictures showed a mix mash of different colours.
2. Doesn't look like they're offering the red color so yeah you can get a shop to do it
3. Someone else might be able to. They may be public on the Korean sites I'll dig around later
4. No idea what you mean, you can put whatever LEDs you want, both for in switch and for the SMD ones. If you're asking if they're RGB LEDs then no, nothing supports that yet anyway.
Hey guys,
Really looking into getting into a custom keyboard. I dont have any experience with soldering but I intend to start and I already have a solder, dont think it seems too hard.
My question is this: What is required for this other than our MX key switches, soldering iron and soldering accessories and keycaps?
Is everything soldered basically or is there anything beyond soldering LEDs and Switches? SMD soldering and such seem pretty difficult to do unless you have quite a bit of experience.
sorry if this sounds retarded but I am pretty interested in building something like this. Also, would this be a good keyboard to start on or are there better options? I really want a TKL, metal case, and then thats pretty much it. LED support seems really nice as well.
I just want to know before i spend quite a bit on this
Thanks!
Most of the time you need diodes/resistors but apparently on the Orion they're already done I believe?
Guessing it's the same as with the LightSaver, which had all SMD parts pre-soldered. So just LEDs and switches.
Found my answer (http://duck0113.tistory.com/87). So Koreans seem to have a thing for 7x spacebars?- This board only takes 1.5 unit mods doesn't it?1. No you can choose

does this share the same profile as the butterfly keypad?
If you mean the same angle, then yeah of course. 11 degrees tilt and it's from the same manufacturer; not too sure on anodized colours matching though.

aside from that, would be the same for the length/height from top to bottom row?
i can't seem to find pictures of the keypad and orion side by side.

I think the lightpad is a bit thinner on the bezel/frame, and I think the lightsaver is even thinner than that. Orion has a pretty wide and thick case.

what i meant was something like this... but instead of the saber/saver, it'd be an orionShow Image(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bLWM_O7Pxic/UwRyECBhaHI/AAAAAAAAHNA/_9LxtWDdNBM/s1600/20140217-4.jpg)
i am assuming that the orion will be 'taller' than the light saber/saver and the butterfly, considering that the orion has extra space between the function row and number row. but i was hoping for an actual picture as my visualization/assumption could be inaccurate.
The light pad should match in height but not the width as you said because of the spacing of the f row. Lightsaver would be perfect as show in the picture.

Oh boy, sifo hopping onto the bandwagon for Orions? :S
Edit: I like grey more :S
It will? I already paid 53 for shipping
Unless we're getting reimbursed for someone proxying?
I've asked Duck if this PCB has the same form factor as A.87 but have not heard back yet. Could you perhaps investigate that, Elton, if you don't mind? I'm thinking of replacing my LZ-GH PCB with something like this Saver v1.0 PCB, because I like all the cool light modes after playing with my LightSaver for a while. I've learned that Sprit's should also most likely fit, but would be nice to use the same firmware/mapping tools for both of my customs.
Ordered one. This is going to be an expensive month for keyboards. :D
EDIT: I guess I will need to start sourcing some switches and stabilizers.
EDIT2: These should fit (http://imsto.cn/index.php?route=product/product&path=61&product_id=55), right?

Those are definitely pcb mount cherry stabs, so they're good
Not too sure on imsto's shipping speed, though :P.
I'm getting mine from GON's site. There are also switch stickers on that site, although only in red.
You can get switches from mechanicalkeyboards.com. ^^
Well it is imsto.CN; and i usually hate chinese shipping :S
GON's shipping cost is pretty high though haha
I had no idea imsto had cherry stabs honestly
Cross out resistors on that list, all SMD soldering is already done, as confirmed by Sifo and Photoelectric-- you only need switches and LEDs
Other than that, your list looks good ^^ And don't forget a good set of thick PBT or GMK abs key caps to really bring out the LEDs; or else, they'll bleed and look all crappy ):

That should make my desk primarily Korean XD
You have a Zalman Z-Machine case as well? I think by the end my keyboard will be as expensive as the case was originally.
I should open it up some time and take some measurements of the pcb of the front panel connections.
Design a new one and replace the Firewire with USB 3.0 or something.
What do you guys think of the lightsaver v2? Same specs as the original one but different case.
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/25/yryzu8yv.jpg) (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/25/yryzu8yv.jpg)
I love my V1 with the flat back. The stepped back side is a little odd. Same reason I find the Orion case and other related designs a little funky when looking from the back.
Another great thing about the original LightSaver is the relatively low height at the front--I think the new design would make it overall taller and require a wrist rest.

I am thinking of converting my QFR from ISO to ANSI, if I bought just the plate could I do this with the QFRs current PCB?
Looks to me that the QFRs PCB has holes for the ANSI layout, just need a plate for them to mount to.

The quote I got was insane, $28.75 per piece if I'm ordering 2, and $12.88ea for 8 pieces. I heard it was around $10 for each piece over in Korea. This is understandable due to the larger order for the company over in Korea though; don't think anyone else in Vancouver got an Orion/Lightsaver that need the pieces.

Duck can only ship 5 at the moment. They had more orders than anticipated, so they need to make more. It'll take no more than 2-3 weeks to ship the rest. A week or so to mill them and a few days to anodize. Very sorry about the delay.

Much interested in this (:

P.s. Elton, maybe you could add a link to the post with the acrylic inserts to the OP?
They are on the 2nd post on the first page ;)
Duck can only ship 5 at the moment. They had more orders than anticipated, so they need to make more. It'll take no more than 2-3 weeks to ship the rest. A week or so to mill them and a few days to anodize. Very sorry about the delay.
I'll open Lightsaver V2 group buy next week and not after they ship cause of the delay.
Also about people who want to order Eagle/Viper from a Korean proxy, there is no point. Viper/Eagle won't be shipped until around May anyways..

If you're doing that GB next week what's the added wait? Considering how rough shipping is from SK to the US it might save $40 just to wait three weeks.

Does anyone know how to use the keymapping program? I tried to create a .hex file but it wouldn't let me save the keymap that I created.
We figured out the issue via PM. When you save the hex file, it fails to save unless you make the filename very simple. Even the default filenames don't work for me. I'm not sure exactly what it doesn't like but removing underscores, dashes, and spaces appears to let you save.
Once you've created the .hex file you can of course rename it to whatever you please.
The weight of everything (excluding switches) is 2.6kg.

Man these guys are so talented. How do they manage to create such ugly interfaces???
My intention is not to be mean. I know it doesn't matter very much. I just find it funny that everything out of OTD is so aesthetically pleasing except for the GUI.

Anyone have one of these or the lightsaver who can tell me about the angle? It seems very steep, and I tend to go for very flat boards. How does it feel?
I'm a little worried about it, but I suppose I'll cope

Maybe you can cut an Accrylic bottom to make it flatter?

The Orions are still in the anodizing process, so it won't be able to ship this week. They said it will be shipped next week for sure. Sorry for the delay again. Hopefully this is the last one. :))Soooooooo... is that round one or will this mean that after this week everyone who is in this GB will soon get their hands on them? :P
for the grey for both Orion and Lightsaver V2, it'll be the blue grey colour.

The anodizing place only makes this grey. They can use another company but the quality isn't as good.

Orion plate is Stainless steel, so it doesn't go through anodize process.I think he means the acrylic plate we see on Duck's website. ;)
It will be the same mirror finish as Light Saver 96.

It can be easily made. When I finally get my board I can look into having those fabricated, too.
I might take this over to TAP plastics and have them cut it, does anyone know the thickness? Unless someone is still planning on having some place do a run for us, it'll probably be cheaper than what I find in California...

Check out post 384 in this thread, no one replied though... I have been sending the drawings to a few folks in LA but I need it in raster format. Either way I'm interested if someone sets something up.
I missed your post.... It seemed to open fine for me in illustrator. Screenshot attached.

So in anticipation (elton with the good news!) I've been messing with the programming tool. I ran that page through Google Translate and I have a mostly good idea of the different functions available on the keyboard but I have to admit, there are some things that are just a big question mark to me... I'll probably figure it all out once I get the keyboard put together =) How have you guys modified the default layout? Did you shuffle some of the layers around? I think it's pretty good as is...
Is the timeline on these getting closer? Any ETA?

The problem is that they don't attach. They just fill the space. So if you pick up the keyboard, they stay on the table. Does Duck intend for them to be glued?

I'm personally more interested in the acrylic plate that sits between the PCB and the bottom of the case, but would pitch in for both.

Oh darn, might be because that's for the V1 style cases. Let me see if I can get one for the V2 style.

Damn that is expensive for the inserts :O
Yeah, in case anyone doesn't know, it goes behind the PCB and spreads out the back-facing LED light around as an edge glow.I'm just wondering
The plate at MOQ 5 is $7.30, plus organizer ship, plus taxes/fees, plus shipping.
The inserts at MOQ 10 are $3.99 ($8 for a set of two) plus all shipping/fees.
rough estimate is 1 kit to be about $20 plus shipping to you.
Sure there is. And BTW, the MOQ is actually 1 for everything, it's just that it's stupid expensive below the second tier.
EDIT: I'm wrong. This guy only has clears and opaques.
Damn that is expensive for the inserts :O
Indeed. Small MOQs are a killer. 1000 pieces would be half that price.
5 or more $6.20
10 or more $3.99
50 or more $2.25
100 or more $2.11
1000 or more $1.99
Also Made-in-USA...
Note: if someone wants to do it in China, I'm perfectly willing to give it up. To be honest it would save me a bunch of work. Please only speak up if you've worked with a company before, though. It would be a shame to tarnish this wonderful Orion project.

elton, do you know if the insert sizes are the same for the Orion, Viper/Eagle, Lightsaver V2, and Butterfly? If so we might be able to get a better MOQ on the side inserts by breaking that out and offering it to everyone in those GBs as well. If the cutout sizes are all slightly different it's moot though.

Yeah 0 idea about that too.
You can see the lightsaver thread for some of that information, including a flashing LED--locations are different for the Lightsaver, but the gist is the same:

Plenty of responses. We can move forward, no doubt. Only question is now that elton got us all the drawings, should it be expanded to include inserts for the other boards too?
this keyboard has killer LEDs. do all keyboards employ the same LED (for lack of a better word) technology? if so, why do these have the best looking LEDs i've come across.. good photographer? (i'm referring to the photos in OP's link)
hope you don't mind the offtopic question
i'm a bit lost - side LEDs are those under the keys and not literally on the sides of the case?
oh right, of course. i was referring to the pictures from the link the OP provided - here is one of them:Show Image(http://cfile8.uf.tistory.com/image/2661034952DA5F9808CF3D)
the intensity (for lack of better word) of the color and lighting is superior to most backlit keyboards i've seen, so i'm merely curious as to whether it uses a different type of LED/bulb or the same type but just with different colors. sorry for the confusion
thanks for the help. guess we won't find out unless someone in the know chimes in, but in the meantime i'll go back to admiring this magnificent board
speaking of which, do you know how often keyboard groupbuys reappear, if ever? first-time groupbuys for keyboards seem to be rare enough already, but i'll be majorly bummed if i have absolutely no shot of ever getting one of these

I'm sure elton, the groupbuy runner, can answer this question. There will probably be other boards in the future, even if this one doesn't reappear.
Did a GB for the plates and inserts ever took off?
That's a shame. Guess I will have to look at a local place for these.
Where was that post again that showed the sizes?
Does anyone know how to use the darn keymapper on this thing? Man that software isn't very intuitive and it's not in english!
What's the flip key on the Orion?

I asked Elton a while ago, we still got nothing
I just wanna make my caps lock normal and have the esc stop blinking :P

Alright, so I found a place nearby that has a wide range of quality acrylic Bouwplastics.nl (http://www.bouwplastics.nl/webshop/plaatmateriaal) and I will ask them to make me one of the plates and a set of side-inserts.
Other than the side window dimensions (http://duck0113.tistory.com/94), the DXF-files (http://kbdlab.co.kr/index.php?mid=board_tune&document_srl=153206) and the plate drawings, what other info should I send them?
I believe the bottom plate was 2mm and the side windows 12mm? Will they be able to lasercut it based on just that?
Updated with bottom plate (http://kbdlab.co.kr/index.php?mid=board_housing&document_srl=158172). ;)
My original question still stands though. How thick is the bottom plate?
And it seems like it doesn't offer any dimensions so it is practically useless.
Thanks, I missed that. Thanks, appreciated. I haven't heard from the company I sent my request to yet. Could be that they are on holidays.Updated with bottom plate (http://kbdlab.co.kr/index.php?mid=board_housing&document_srl=158172). ;)Looks like 2mm based on Google Translation for that link. I'll try to help you out and reach out to some plastic machine cutters to see if there's anything else needed outside of the DXF files and thickness

Watching your progress intently. GL :thumb: Going to have to do the same myself at some point. Do you know how the acrylic plate works? Does it just sit between the two case pieces?
Question, are there any markers for the polarity of the LEDs? Margon is building mine now and he thinks he needs to load the firmware first to figure it out. If I can I would like to try to save him some time.
PLEASE NOTE when installing LEDs, polarity is not indicated on the PCB, but it's the standard + on the right, - on the left, when looking at the PCB from the top (not from the bottom). BUT, if you're doing a 1.5x modifier layout on the bottom row, note that the LEDs for the right-side Alt/GUI/Ctrl should be reversed in orientation to - / +.
It most certainly does. Thanks! :)Question, are there any markers for the polarity of the LEDs? Margon is building mine now and he thinks he needs to load the firmware first to figure it out. If I can I would like to try to save him some time.
I haven't installed LEDs on mine yet (next up), but I'm assuming it's the same as the Lightsaver:PLEASE NOTE when installing LEDs, polarity is not indicated on the PCB, but it's the standard + on the right, - on the left, when looking at the PCB from the top (not from the bottom). Is backspace the flip key on the orion?
Is there a flashing guide anywhere or is it all in korean? I have some korean stuff Im just tired and am lacklustre about working it out :) Apologies if it's in this thread already.

Margo, yes the flip key is backspace for the Orion.
See "Note on Reprogramming" here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=53942.0)

I did that + on the right - on the left, top down:
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a258/lymph/20140723_164736919_iOS_zpsc1ae48f7.jpg) (http://s13.photobucket.com/user/lymph/media/20140723_164736919_iOS_zpsc1ae48f7.jpg.html)
and this happened:
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a258/lymph/20140723_195532895_iOS_zps1158b5a1.jpg) (http://s13.photobucket.com/user/lymph/media/20140723_195532895_iOS_zps1158b5a1.jpg.html)
So I had to swap them all round to get:
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a258/lymph/20140724_184246137_iOS_zps50012724.jpg) (http://s13.photobucket.com/user/lymph/media/20140724_184246137_iOS_zps50012724.jpg.html)
(somehow managed to catch the esc flash in the picture :thumb: )
so on this, predominantly - was on the right and + was on the left, looking top down at the keyboard. Unless my LED are crazy! :)
Doh. I'll be installing LEDs this weekend, will follow-up with whether they're backwards for me as well.
Anyone figure out the key mapper? My escape only blinks once now, and I cant control the leds anymore :( I need an ELI5 tutorial :)

What problems are you having? I've been helping folks with the software and having had any issues thus far. Feel free to PM me and we'll suss it out and post the solution to the thread.

Thank you, will do.
Found a place that can lasercut the bottom plate. Just € 34,30 for 9 plates so around €4 or $5.1
If they turn out right I will probably be selling some on here after shooting some pics.
They don't have a machine currently for the 12mm acrylic we need for the inserts but they will have a new machine soon. *Fingers crossed*

I had 2x 2mm acrylic plates made to test.
The single 2mm is pretty thin, can barely see the acrylic between the 2 pieces of the case.
4mm looks a lot better but ends up being too long for the screws provided by the case, does anybody know what type of screws the case uses (or how I can identify them) and/or where we can get longer screws?

Even if it's too thin to be visible it should still give a bit of glow around the case or at the very least offer a flatter option with aluminum case feet (http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/accessaries/19-aluminium-legs.html) for those who prefer that.
Please do, I can still change my order to a 4mm then.Did you make some shots?Found a place that can lasercut the bottom plate. Just € 34,30 for 9 plates so around €4 or $5.1

I can take some photos later this evening. Based on photos in the OP, I'm guessing Duck used 4mm plate

Finally getting around to building my board, but does anyone know what the cut-out in the center of the bottom piece is for?
InterestedI will be trying it myself first before I sell to others to see if they actually fit. But so far it looks like it will work.
[...] does anybody know what type of screws the case uses (or how I can identify them) and/or where we can get longer screws?
Screws: the 10 little screws you need to attach the plate to the case are size M2 in Torx T6 with a 0.4mm pitch (called "coarse" or "normal") and 5mm length. If your set is missing screws, please see this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=53942.msg1268209#msg1268209) post by dorkvader-he ordered a large batch for himself that seem to fit well.

Slight update on the plate:
It works, but you will need different screws. Or tap into the plastic in the front.

I did. It's too thin to make a difference. Remember, the only LEDs underneath are the four at the holes on the side. We will probably have better luck with double thickness but I won't be able to try that until later this week. I need to finish my thesis before tomorrow evening.
Does anyone know how to program commands like volume up, Play/Pause and the like?same question here, those multimedia commands were stated as for MAC only in the keymapper, any idea how to make it works in windows?

BTW, I am really interested in your acrylic plate work there JaccoW, have you figured out how to make that glow like Duck' orion? I think the frosted acrylic with 4mm would work, but it's just a guess. :p

There is an IC going on for an Orion V2 brass/stainless steel insert (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=85723) and perhaps one for the original V1 as well.
