Yes, this keyboard is very impressive in my hand. The outward is very classic and the CNC surface is very smooth to touch.

Unfortunately it's not available due to the technique issue of the anodizing factory. Colors like pink or pinky blue also are unavailable. :-X

They are still considering where to hold the GB. It won't be taking a long time I think.

Will there be an option without the golden badge?

Could it be use plate-less? A case like this would be ideal to have a well supported and solid PCB mounted keyboard.

You mean a HHKB like layout without a badge?

Yes, but it will look pretty empty without the brass badge. :blank:

Probably not. The plate is combined with top case, so there will be no screw holes in bottom case.

That purple  :o

Yeah that purple is mine. ;D
Yock said that brass plates might be possible, if he can find a good factory to do it.
Price is estimated right now.

Care to share? I saw the taobao link but I assume the price is no longer correct? Unless they actually charged a grand and a half for these (seems unlikely, the 9999 yen number sounds like a placeholder) in which case I'll respectfully bow out while ahead and spend my money on a year's worth of Burger King instead.

If you see 9999RMB on taobao GB link, it is just a way to avoid people to place an order after GB period.
The GB page will leave it and change the price to a ridiculous number as a memento. They will alert people not to buy it in detail.
R1 is around 250USD for each. Don't really know if it's gonna remain the same at the moment.

It's TMK, so yes, it supports media functions.  The screenshot above, depicting their GUI, shows the first tab active.  When you switch to the next tab you'll see the media player options.  All is good.

Yea that's what I figured, thank you for clearing that up!

250 bucks seems super reasonable, especially if we're talking about a reasonably sized kit rather than just the case. If that's how it's gonna be, or even if the price increases slightly, I'd love to participate.

Looking forward to further updates!

Why? I like it and may still buy it. But the fact that the left side is aligned and the right side isnít screws with my brain. Are we not allowed to have differing opinions? Itís not like I was ****ting on the design.

I don't think so. It's hard to put the badge in a WKL top and doesn't look awkward.
I had tried it myself before and it looked strange anyway.

I will confirm with them about 7u spacebar supporting. By looking the layout pic it is possible.

Really like this design ! I had noticed this board when I surfed on Taobao, but unfortunately the group buy for R1 just ended at that time, so really looking forward to an Geekhack GB. One thing I would really love to see is the support of alps switch if possible, even if just for switch plate since there is still option for hand wiring. Also maybe adding some cool looking color, like those retro green/blue color and red on fridges, or classic ivory color (though these might not be possible with anodize but only spray color)

I asked Yock to do customize it for me, so it's one and only in R1.

Alps compatibility is not possible, and colors you mentioned were pretty hard to do it with anodizing.
We'll try to satisfy everyone with as many color options as we can.

The mini USB port is a very reliable solution for keyboards. Why having a USB-c? Unless it is easily replaceable, like phone ports that are in a separated small board, it is a less reliable solution of an otherwise interesting design.

Usb-C is the future and is a much more sturdy plug. I love that they are using them on this board.

Do you have evidence supporting it? Not your love, neither being the future; but, on sturdiness of the port.

So the thing is min USB if you look at insertion cycle lifetime is actually one of the poorest connectors. It was only made to last 1000 cycles. I think now a good cable can get up to 5000, but Usb-c is rated for at least 10 000 cycles which is a factor of two better.

An specification is not actual reliability data, it is just the design's purpose, achieving it will depend on manufacturing quality. But, I can see your point. Personally, I have my keyboards always connected to my Thinkpad's port replicators at home and at work, so I never unplug them, however, Mini USB has proved to be reliable enough for keyboard applications, also, I'd prefer the wire at the back, it is a cleaner desk setup, than on the side.

Are you really arguing the reliability of the USB C port? Don't you think Samsung and Google and Apple haven't looked into this? How is that not proof enough. If the professional hardware developers are using USB-C then I'm comfortable in their decision making.

There no need to justify a change made by the industry. It is a fact and it is coming to all of our gadgets sooner or later. I just asked if you had actual reliability data supporting your statement, but you are just echoing the industry's advertising. It is not bad not having facts, must of our comments here are just opinions with no evidence.

Thank goodness for Google translate, albeit very inaccurate.

you'll have to get into the buy/sell/trade QQ channel, but they're not exactly fans of having foreigners in there

Ya I agree a specification is not equal to it. But that was just the first article I found. There are other articles where the reliability has been stated. I'm assuming that it has been tested.

Thanks for discussion. ;D
There were three points why CA66 were using TypeC port:
1. They thought both typec port and case were rounded, and they matched well.
2. Could be plugged from front side and reverse side for sure.
3. Added a new element to a old fashioned keyboard.

I also asked why the port set on the side than the back. Yock said that he didn't want to destroy the perfect rounded surface by drilling a hole on it.
I prefer wiring at the back myself, but CA66 is kind of not suitable.

Yeah, Type-c is more futuristic and can make case more decent.
But almost all user using mini b cable for keyboard...
it's very important for compatibility.
I don't want adding one more cable on my desk.
So if it possible, please consider mini b port...  ;)

And Thank you for making this fantastic keyboard ^_^

I have seen a few new Chinese keyboard PCBs and it appears USB/c is getting common. Anyways, I really do not see how to justify a three hundred something board, while I really do not have any use for dedicated arrows and when I am doing pretty well with a sixty format.

My exact thoughts! After seeing the super sexy AEK64 case/board that Clueboard is selling it made me want a 65% version.

I jumped onto KLE and played with some layouts but none really worked due to keycap sizing though. :(  I just tried out this CA66 style and it works with all Original caps! Although It doesn't match their current plan for CA66.  Here are my renditions: https://imgur.com/a/2oCdL

I'd be totally in! Such an amazing design!
Would you guys rather get a WKL version or a "regular" one? I actually really like the HHKB layout, since it looks soo clean, but on the same time, I would really like to have that CA 66 logo since it makes the board kinda special.. I'm really conflicted about that..
On some of the pictures, the keyboard looks like a darker green aka olive green (at least on my screen). Is it actually like that or is it "just" a regular grey? I'd really dig a olive green keyboard..! :)

I assume "front door" means assembled since the opposing option is "kit", I'm just not sure how you pick the options (colour and then stabs/switches/etc if they are not included).

This GB is available for China and Taiwan now.
I think anyone can buy it, but you'll have to understand full description written in Chinese.

This Round added some new options:
1. Brass plate
2. Titanium logo
3. Red and blue case as default colors

We are planning to set GB in GH as the final one, and the abundance of GH GB will be the most. (at least equal to round 2)
Those new three options addition is a test for a cost estimation. Like we don't even know what a brass plate cost currently.
So thanks for you guys keeping an eye on this IC. We are looking forward to do a good final version GB for GH. ;D

1. Brass plate

We are looking forward to do a good final version GB for GH. ;D

How long until the GH GB?

I hope that price estimation can come down a little more, that's just a tad more than I'd like to spend.

In SC I can believe it  :)) , but i may spring for this.
I'd like to see it come down to at least $250, honestly.

$250 is the price on Taobao right now.

Thanks for the info! And for the case if I want dark grey, do I have to select the "颜色自选" option?

We are going to make an interest check form right after R2 in Taobao ends.

It will be focusing on:

1. price check
2. default case color options check
3. logo material options check
4. aluminum plate color options and brass plate option check
5. others if it's not mentioned above

After we clarify all the stuff, GB will start soon! ;D :p

Probably not. Since it's our first keyboard kit and we haven't find a good factory to make it.
We'll continue to design some great stuff and might going to let it be an option. :D

Switches are "upside down" on your PCB (south facing LEDs).  They are not compatible with thick cherry profile (GMK) keycaps.

What you say here is a confusing.  The leds face north or towards the top of the board. But yes, this is indeed upside down.  I personally cannot stand GMK caps on upside down switches, but thatís just one manís opinion.  And I still may try to get one and use a different profile keycap bc the board is unique

So inverted switches still work with gmk they just feel different/wrong? Either way it would probably be best to change this if possible.

This is a touchy topic and some people have firm opinions.  I firmly believe that upside down switches have issues with all cherry profile keycaps.  (SA, DSA, OEM have no such issue)

I have many keyboards with upside down switches and can tell you that every GMK set and ePBT set I have (7 in total) does not bottom out properly on the QWERTY and home rows.  The keycaps make contact with the switch before it bottoms out completely.  It has nothing to do with LEDs, it is the switch housing that makes contact.  The proper bottom of the switch falls off quickly.  However, the proper top plateaus out for longer.  When you turn that switch upside down, the keycap hits slightly.

It is much more noticeable with linear switches.  They do work, yes.  They will allow you to actuate the key.  And if you are not too picky about switch evenness across the board it will not bother you much.

Some people will deny this is a thing.  In my eyes, they are either numb in the fingers and hard of hearing, or there is some sort of cherry profile from before my sets were made that doesn't have the issue.

Actually LEDs are north facing, as you can see the pic below.

Thanks reececonrad for clearing things out, you are absolutely right. ;D

When you use Cherry profile keysets, you will have feeling of hitting the housing typing on QWER row.
You can get that touch especially when using an Enjoypbt set. Here is a pic for reference.

GMK will be smoother, but still have a slightly feeling.

If I'm understanding the situation correctly the LEDs in this will be North facing as seen in the picture posted by PlayKeyboardTW - the issues with cherry profile sets are experienced with South facing LEDs, the confusion was because someone thought that's the way they are on the CA66 but, as per the picture posted, that is not the case.

I think he just used to wrong direction originally. South facing leds is the normal way, so that wouldn't be the orientation that causes the problems. Issues arise when they're facing north (though it's apparently not the leds, but the housing that causes to problem)

Oh yea, my bad then, confusing subject for me since I've hardly ever even considered this kind of thing (I don't do LEDs on any of my builds). Unfortunate if that does limit certain users though despite me not having a problem with it.

When switches are oriented with the led hole to the north/top, thick cherry profile caps can contact the switch housing. Unfortunately for me it's pretty much a deal breaker as I solely use thick cherry profile caps. No SA or uniform profiles for me.

Oh so even without the LEDs installed there are still clearance issues - live and learn I guess, thanks for bringing that to light (hurrhurr); shame, I'm weird and a DSA/XDA fan so not using GMK on this board is hardly a deal breaker but it does feel a little silly to sacrifice a whole profile like that.

My thoughts exactly. I was originally planning on putting SA Lime on this, but I would still like the freedom change it up. Especially if there isn't really any reason to have it the other way.

well, i mean the main reason people started doing this was for shine through legends, I'm sure you know that.  But obviously close to no one buying this board is going to use such keycaps.

Iím a little confused, can I confirm that with this pcb you have to orientate your switches with the Led facing north that will interfere with GMK and cherry profile caps, even if you donít solder in the led? And there is no alternative or fix for this. Sorry for the noob question.

If the photo with switches installed is accurate.  This the only thing we don't know for sure, but it seems very likely this is the case.

Thanks guys for comments.
I am designing an IC form to figure out what options will meet the taste of most people.

To my knowledge, if the PCB has south LED holes, you will have chance hitting LEDs typing on Cherry profile keycaps.
Both 3mm LEDs and 2x3x4 LEDs will be hit. 1.8mm LEDs seem to be the solution for avoiding that.

Anyway, we will do a investigation for CA66. Cheers. :thumb:

You shave off LEDs so they don't interfere.

PCBs with inverted switches are almost never done with customs.

Alps support also means new plate. And hopefully separate plates as cutouts that support both MX and alps switches are absolutely horrible.

Still unsure. Few things need to be changed and may take some time.

what is the rough weight on this keyboard? will future revisions add a weighted version?

1.5kg with assembly.
There is no room to put a weight in I guess.

After reading all feedbacks and having a discussion, we decided to change switch orientation to normal(not inverted as old one).
Brass plate and Titanium badge are added.
Other things like default colors, plate colors, QMK supporting... etc, are still pending.

The first thing we need to finish is to test our new PCB.
If it's passed the examination, I think the GB date will be close.

Thanks for all your comments. We promised to do a GB surely better than previous two in China. ;D

Please do make sure everything is in order before GB opens haha, Time TKL and GMK Laser are both currently active so I'm (and surely others too) going to be very poor for the rest of the month T_T

Im wondering if, given the classic design and feel, the pcb can support alps switches also. That for me would as SO much value to the package. How does everyone else feel about that?

Looks like it won't delay anything of our up coming schedule.

R2 cases in China will be sent to anodizing factory on 25th.
We will see how they goes and start to plan GH GB. :thumb:

Do you have any idea if the PCBs will be holtite-friendly?  The mounting hole diameter for the commonly used holtites is 0.058" (1.47mm).

I would like to make my next build hot-swappable, but, obviously, this isn't like building a 60% where I could use a universal pcb that has been proven to work with holtites.

Looking at the build log album, there is a lot of space inside the case.  I'm concerned that this will amplify and resonate sounds.
Is it possible to change the design so only plate space is machined out?

Everything else is fine, but the sound resonance might be a deal breaker for me.

Hard question to answer. The loudness made from typing were just normal to me.
There were some reasons why CA66 was designed like this. Mostly was due to CNC issue.
So it is not changeable.
Thanks for asking. ;D

Looking at the build log album, there is a lot of space inside the case.  I'm concerned that this will amplify and resonate sounds.
Is it possible to change the design so only plate space is machined out?

Everything else is fine, but the sound resonance might be a deal breaker for me.

Fill it with dampening material.

Not as effective as appropriately sized space.  Someone I know already tried.

Hard question to answer. The loudness made from typing were just normal to me.
There were some reasons why CA66 was designed like this. Mostly was due to CNC issue.
So it is not changeable.
Thanks for asking. ;D

Doesn't removing that much material just make the case take longer to build? Like instead of having rounded out cutouts where the bolts connect to the top/bottom, couldn't you just make the walls thicker?

Just seems like you are increasing manufacturing cost to reduce weight and make a less rigid case.

Have you considered adding some bolt holes to allow an internal weight to the giant hollow section?

I am not the designer, so what I replied was basically based on our daily conversation.
I myself won't ask anything relates to design and manufacturing, since there is always a reason for "why it's been made like this".
There is one thing confirmed: Yock did reduce more material for reducing weight. He didn't want this keyboard to be as heavy as other keyboard kits.
If there is anything we can improve, that will be put in the next keyboard.
Thanks for the comment.  :D

What about the color choice we will get? Any idea? And for the logo it will be brass only or other material/color/finish ? :)

Thanks :D

Awww, I was hoping this keyboard was the kind that would be so heavy as to sever toes if one were to accidentally drop it.

Looks like cerakoted white, or mao. Not sure if the stock CA66 will offer that though, or if the Chinese buy did, maybe he got it done himself at a shop like some people do. Would like to know as well since I love white cases, if they offer cera/mao from the get-go then that's definitely a huge plus.

I would really like a light beige coated one, to get that retro feel. I haven't found much about how to get a case coated.

just say no to switch top opening plates.  switches fit straighter and feel better without the extra cutouts.
