Yeah but I can download a high bitrate full length movie rip in some 15mim, not having to decide on movies beforehand is a huge game changer, well worth the poisonous gas and all.

It's never fast enough. But I find a good price to performance ratio for home use (2 people) is a symmetrical 150up/150down. If I'm running any sort of homelab though, I would bump that above 200...

I used to be all about throwing money at a bigger and bigger connection but now I just prioritize traffic. 10mb seems to be fine for me. I dont download as many torrents now that theres netflix/amazonprime/etc. and gaming tends to be at night when everyone else is asleep anyway.

Netflix 4K is only ~15mbps.

Vanilla Bluray is ~25-40mbps..

4K Bluray is ~30-90mbps..

Getting 900+ mbs fibre to the house next week can't wait.

Generally speaking, most people only stream in 1080p, which 10mbps should do fine with. Of course if your streaming 4k or downloading large files you benefit from a higher speed. The majority of my customers (I'm a network specialist for AT&T) dont require anything more than streaming. I do have the occasional customers who actually do require a lot of bandwidth. Most of those customers are professional photographers who are download/uploading raw files to an offsite backup. I have a lot of customers ordering our 1gbps speed who have absolutely no need for that much bandwidth.

Datacenters doing colocation and hosting don't need as much as you think.
It's based on an average, and the average website doesn't use much bandwidth really, which is why if your site is actually really successful it gets expensive really quick.

250 Mbps symmetric fiber, while living on the outskirt of the city (not totally on the countryside, but not anywhere near the city center either). I think some countries in Europe offer a bit more even to regular users (I've seen mention of 300 Mbps fiber, symmetric, for home users).

I did test using speed test and, holy crap, it is that fast.

I know individuals in Japan who have much more than that: 600 Mbps on speed tests.

It's a real joy to use and I had to upgrade my good old 100 Mbit switches which were becoming the bottleneck.

It's perfect to send big files to/from my servers, to download OS images or startup Docker containers etc.

Sadly doesn't help much with latency: physics is a b----  : )

I haz the gigabit symmetric,  but it's not been as useful as i thought, because NO WHERE ELSE can take a big stream from a server from my residence..

Let's say you want to watch your full 40mbit bluray remux stream from the house,  sure, the house can supply 25 of those simultaneously from the raid 10..

But then, you go outside, and almost nothing on the outside would give you a solid 40mbit over wifi or cable.
