Color options are nice. Im hoping there's more than ten available, or at least enough for the people interested in buying. The design and price point are very attractive.

I am one of the ones that liked the first design far better. I mean the price is reasonable but the design overall now is kinda meh! it looks just to generic. I mean there only so many way's to design a box. I Think the part liked about the original thought was the layers looked like the case was made up of like 4 layer's which looked pretty unique. It might have just been the render.. I am sure the people who complained it looked like a duck to start with didn't plan to buy in either way. I hope it does decently just yea can get the same thing off massdrop pretty much.

Well dam, was going to jump in on this but the new design is just meh. If you're just making ~10 mostly for yourself, you should just go with the design that you like the most regardless of community backlash.

Are we seriously encouraging cloning and copying now? We should be better than that.

I'm sure people will buy the original design. Just as people will buy all the Android phones copying the iPhone X's notch. But does that what we want this scene to become? People copying each other without any attribution or gratitude?

There are more than a few ways to design a box. That is the entire raison d'être of this board.
If OP wants the reputation of a Duck cloner who simply takes one of Duck's CADs and cut it down to fit the 660 layout (which is easier than you'd think. I tried it before.), then sure go ahead.

OP is also more than welcomed to go back to the drawing board and create a more attractive design than the current one. That's what ICs are for, gathering feedbacks and iterating.

This is stupid lets just be honest! What point isn't something a clone! I mean ever single board out there is a clone of something in all its many parts. Then the fact Duck's never even ran a board in this particular layout/style/size.. is just the icing. I mean damn lets get brutal with it. Duck cloned the LED's off a Code board... from WASD... heck while where at it why don't we go jump The Norbaforce also ((which I am proudly a part of The group buy and excited)) its basically a design clone of a Topre Realforce TKL.. This is one of the things that makes me so frustrated at the community in general and I think pushes new people away among other things. I mean just because something is similar doesn't make it a Clone. A clone would be taking one of Duck's current offerings and making a DIRECT duplicate of it.. That would be messed up but creating another product with inspiration from another is by no means. Why don't we jump puddsy or Zambumon over Yolch and Serika.... there both yellow colorway's being ran at the same time. both in Cherry profile! I mean so obviously by logic one is a clone of the other even if not a direct copy.

One could say the second design looks like the LZ CLS. Some keyboards have a pretty unique layout, let's say the Duck TC-V3 for example. But let's all be honest, about 80% of the IC's here have some resemblance to existing keyboards, there can only be so much innovation.

And even though at first sight I liked the second design more, after looking at it more I kinda like the first one better now :P

What -could- be an idea, is to simply send Duck a message to ask his opinion?

The new design could be construed to take aesthetic elements from a:

KBD75
XD84
XD24
Mira SE
AMJ96
TGR Jane (With diffuser)
TGR 910
Red Scarf III/ZZ96
LZ CLS

The list of tall cases with mid-sized bezels using an acrylic defuser could go on really - As well as that, some of these cases have an extremely similar bottom case design to the Owl's new design. If anything, the new design is yet again a copy of other designs.

The whole "Only Duck can do that!" shtick makes no sense when the alternative is to go with a design that's even more wide spread. Not to mention that both the TADA68's alu and plastic case are almost the exact same as the Duck design:

But we as a community seem to have embraced this board without ****ting a brick? At what point are we allowed to say "Well X design element hasn't been used by *insert maker here* for awhile, so now it's okay someone else to use it"? Customizing being the niche that it is, it really makes zero sense that any one person should "own" the way a keyboard looks.

I for one would still love to see the original design and would 100% purchase it.

This is not that it takes one design feature from several boards, the thing is that it uses ALL the design features that Duck boards has. For me the first design was a slap in the face to Duck.

whichever design you decide to move forward with I am down. its been too long till we have a decent 660 layout custom with underglow. not counting the lz-st but that was too limited in the amount of colors.

I really like this keyboard, I would definitely get it, I am in for a GB.

I also like the first version of the design, which some called a duck clone. I don;t think it is. It has similarities to duck but there are similarities between other keyboards too.

I like both designs, but liked the first way more.

Who gives a **** if some users want to nitpick on some hipster shtick about it being derivative of another kit. Just make what you want for yourself and others will surely join in if they like the design.

Even if you got no detractors here someone would have smugly chimed in eventually, be it on the group buy or when buyers post their builds. Everyone gets haters.

Rant over. I think the side-underglow/downglow deal on the new design seems interesting. Whatever you decide, I'm interested in seeing final products of any kind. Good luck OP

Also, I guess I am confused, can I see a side-by-side of the first and second (current) designs?

To op, I love both designs and what you are doing trying to avoid trouble with other designers, but in the future, i hope that you will stand strong to what you design cause it was something you believed in. dont let you design get put down because of certain people. I dont see it an a clone but more of an inspiration where you have built it on above something.

Well, the problem is that he contacted Duck himself and he was against the idea unfortunately...

I'm all for sticking to your designs but I'd also err on the side of caution for fear of causing some sort of bad blood.

Looking forward to the prototype!

It looks really great, far beyond my expectations.
But there are a few bugs I will need to fix.

Hopefully 660 Owl's PCB will be OK, I can not wait any longer.
