Favorite switch for long typing sessions?
« on: Fri, 15 June 2018, 12:48:57 »
As keyboard enthusiasts I'm curious which switch do you personally prefer for long typing/coding sessions? I've been using cherry mx greens (V60 mini) and the heavy key press is really taking its toll and fatiguing me.

Are cherrys still the "best" switch? I've noticed quite a few new brands popping up, would like everyone's opinion.

Thanks!

topre. i specifically switched to topre because mechanical switches hurt my fingers and ears when i had to work overtime (otherwise mech switches are fine for an eight hour shift). it doesn't matter if i bottom out or how hard i type, topre switches never hurt the way mechanical switches can

if you insist on mechanical, i recommend red or browns with o-rings. but i never liked the feel of o-rings

Nothing is better than cherry mx reds with orings.
They feel better than the silent version, even if they aren't as quiet.

Topre feels slow and too heavy, plus silencing a topre keyboard is a real pain.

I like topre 55g or thin lubed Tealios. I can type faster with the Tealios but there is just something about long typing sessions and topre 55g that I love. Usually about an hour in I can type as fast as I can on Tealios.

i like how o-rings dampen the bottoming out. i like how they are quiet and soft. what i can't stand is how they shorten the travel. after i while, i end up removing them

Are you sure that you've tested thin orings?

I've personally never enjoyed O-Rings on any switch I've tried and that's pretty much the entire MX Line, the only thing I think I would enjoy it on but haven't tried would be silent blacks, though I might try using silicone balls instead, not expecting too good results though

I've been liking a lighter tactile spring (i.e. 62g ergo clears). For me, it felt like the reason for fatigue was bottoming out and I struggled with lighter linears as a result. With lighter tactiles, it was easier to know when you had to lift your fingers, more subconsciously than deliberately.

I've been really enjoying Kailh+Novelkeys box Jade lately. Better than any of the Cherry offerings, for me anyway.

So far I'm loving my 62g Zilents. I have done a ton of gaming on them, not so much typing for long periods though. But I start my Masters in Art History in September so I'll make up for lost typing time then. :P

8 hours a day of typing? Objectively probably Topre or Tealios.  But I don't do that much constant typing anymore so I usually use heavier tactile switches which I like better in short bursts. I'm liking box whites overall now though.

So far, my favorite typing experience is with an ergo-clears or Zealios and an OEM profiled PBT keycap on an aluminum plate.  For work, I use Zealios with GMK silencing clips on an a steel plate with GMK keycaps.  I love the quiet that this combination produces, especially in the office, but the reduced travel is a bit jarring.  Perhaps if I had an aluminum plate with a little more give instead, that would make the experience a better.

I've tried various weighted springs, tactile vs non-tactile switches, and different key profiles.  SA keys on light springs don't work well for me, but paired with tealios they feel really nice.

Unfortunately, with so many options, I think the best thing to do is experiment.  The feel of a keyboard will be subjective.  I would recommend finding a keyboard that will allow you to hot swap key switches.  Obviously try cherry reds or browns.  There's a reason why these are some of the most ubiquitous key switches.  They work for most people.  For me, anything more than 67 grams is a heavy switch.  My typing accuracy diminishes quickly and I experience fatigue.

From ZealPc, try 62 or 65 gram Zealios.  67 gram telios feel good with SA profile caps.
From Gateron try the yelllow switch.  Feels like a cherry red, but with more cushion at the bottom.
From NovelKeys, try the purple Kailh Pro Switches.  50 grams tactile.

There are many options to choose from!  I only listed a few I have had nice experiences with.  I intentionally left off any sort of clicky switch.  I've tried em and they don't work for me.

vintage ghost black

That means vintage Cherry MX Black (because it's nicely smooth and linear) with MX Clear (or "78g") springs for a steep force curve (easy to actuate, harder to bottom out).

keyboard layout > switches though

+1 on thin o-ring, I originally tried thick o-ring and hated it.  Some point later I acquired thin o-ring and they're not bad, they're thin enough that you don't really notice it much (granted doesn't dampen as well as thick o-ring).

But as least it's thin enough that's it's not intrusive.  :)

Topre and Gateron Yellow. for me atleast that i can type a long time on with out getting super fatigued.

I have the same combo!

I use Topre at work and Gateron Yellow at home (since I game at home, Topre suck for gaming).  I get much less typo on Gateron Yellow vs MX Red (my original favourite).

But if you're talking about strictly typing then Topre hands down.

Topre, but SKCM Brown comes in a close second. They're stiff and heavy, but even for long typing sessions they're a dream to type on.
