[IC] TaiChi TKL Keyboard ~ Manufactured by Eve
« on: Tue, 02 October 2018, 22:11:33 »
Hello guys,
Feel free to post your feed backs on the design as well as your interest in this thread.

This oriental looking board [TaiChi] is heavily inspired by the philosophy of Taichi, a Chinese cosmological term for the "Supreme Ultimate" state of undifferentiated absolute and infinite potential, the oneness before duality, from which Yin and Yang originate, can be compared with the old 無極.
The word 太極 comes from I Ching: "易有太極,是生兩儀,兩儀生四象,四象生八卦,八卦定吉凶,吉凶生大業。" ~ adopted from wikipedia.

General information of the keyboard:
1. Case will be made from 6061 Aluminium alloy. TKL layout - WKL and WK
2. Keyboard angle at 7°
3. Available plate options will be:
     a. Aluminium Alloy
     b. Brass
     c. Stainless steel
4. Weight options - Brass only
5. TaiChi logo made of titanium alloy. Manual mosaic polishing and engraving with Eve's latest techniques.
6. Side Profile 1 will be used, do not be alarmed by the prototype pictures below.
7. Colour way yet to be decided. Might do a google poll on the colour choices during the actual interest check.
8. Top mounted.
9. PCB - unconfirmed
10. Price yet to be decided.

I am still exploring payment methods directly to Eve. Since this is Eve's studio project I am trying to cut myself out of the payment process.
Lesser middleman and transfers would be better for all. Am doing this liaison for free (Eve has issues with communicating in English), which I believe would be beneficial for this community.
Of course I will still follow through and help out in the ordering and logistical requests, as well as bridging the communication gap here.

I prefer to let the pictures do the talking, so continue to scroll down below for more details.
Without further ado, here is the concept render for your reference:

Ver. 2.0 Concept Drawings:
We have discussed and prepared the initial drawings for prototyping. Do note that the diagrams here are not final and are in midst of making things better.

Top Case design - We will be removing the text as the TaiChi logo is symbolic.  We believe simplicity is elegance.
We will also be shifting the logo to the right arrow cluster position instead of left.

Curved Profile 1 as promised:

The Bottom:

Super dope. Have you decided if this is going to be limited or not? Also I love the idea of implementing the side curve to capture the shape of the taichi circle.  That is just so original. Very very beautiful work!

LOVE IT! Especially when I noticed the unique side profile, rectangular on the front and S on the back, at first I thought it was weird and contradicting, it's actually mimicking the tai chi logo (and philosophy) , but rectangular on the front to make it easy to pair with a wrist wrest or just easier overall for most people to type on. Aesthetics meets utility.

I really like side profile 2. The curves go with the theme. Is it just me or the red more pink? I would like to see a darker red :)
Also, any specs on the weight?

Reasonable request. I can relay that to them.
Might have ISO plate variants, but my preference heavily leaned on ANSI only.

I will ask for a timeline. But most importantly I would need all logistic and design plans to be finalized before rushing into a buy.

Looks really good! love the yin and yang back. But i'm worried about the seams? the CNC control needs to be tight otherwise the seams won't be flush with each other and that just detracts from the beauty of the product.

Did voiced the concerns over to them. Then again if people wants a perfectly seamless side then probably machining hours and cost will be an issue. Let me see how the prototype turns out.

Side profile 1 reminds me of Realforce 87UB, which still to this date I consider the best front and side curve. Simple, ergonomical and good looking. To me, it's better than thick RAMA bezels.

However, to be truly good keyboard, and equal or better than RAMA, this needs to have integrated plate. I think you just can't match chasis rigidity of an integrated plate.

Will not be doing integrated plate. I personally see more cons than pros for an integrated plate.

Will not be doing integrated plate. I personally see more cons than pros for an integrated plate.

Would you care to clarify?

Polycarb - More thock and flex (some said tactiles are great on these, who knows)
Aluminium - more choices of colour
Brass - best sounding, more rigid than above two - I like to use linears on them
Stainless steel - very rigid, higher ping

Each plate has different characteristics that works well with linears / tactile switches. Making it integrated means losing the ability to customize your needs.
I personally feel this would be a greater loss than gain in the long run. Also multiple pcbs / plates making switch swapping way easier.
Another point will be greater ease of assembly versus an integrated plate (which has higher chance of creating dings and scratches during the installation and soldering process).

Edit: Just to add, integrated plate is harder to machine, potentially more rejects and more QC issues as well.

Will there be an option without blockers?

If yes, I'm planing on buying ALPS TKL KBP V80 board, and then transplanting plate and PCB into TaiChi.

Do you think this is doable?

The PCB and Plate would need to be the exact same as this board. 99% unlikely. The only time you can do this is when the case is built with those intentions (ie Norbaforce).

The PCB and Plate would need to be the exact same as this board. 99% unlikely. The only time you can do this is when the case is built with those intentions (ie Norbaforce).

Not necessarily so. It really depends on PCB's shape and dimensions of TaiChi.

There are standard dimensions of TKL PCBs (although we're talking about unwritten standards), and if the board is in compliance with that, you can put pretty much anything in there.

I've seen a lot of people using TEX aluminium case as a host for donor plate and PCB from V80 and other ALPS boards. But I just thought TaiChi looks better.

It really depends on the maker's intention. Some of them like interchangable PCBs, others don't.

Also, I'm not against the idea of making slight modifications to the plate if needed, as long as it's not too extensive. I can do drilling new screw holes and trimming from the sides, but I can't make new switch slots or make a new plate altogether.

The only thing that could fuk up things very badly is a position of a USB connector.

Will there be an option without blockers?

If yes, I'm planing on buying ALPS TKL KBP V80 board, and then transplanting plate and PCB into TaiChi.

Do you think this is doable?

There are options without blockers, but bear in mind there was no design intention to support Alps.

You pretty much said what I was saying. That TEX case was built with certain OEMs in mind (Filco standard). There is extra space between the alphas and F-row on TEX for the status LED while that spacing is smaller on the TaiChi. Top mount customs have extra plate space going into the bezel where the screws are; the TEX case mounts between alphas and F-row primarily. The connector here looks to be right-aligned (likely attached to the PCB) while OEMs have a center-mounted connector in the middle of the PCB and use breakout boards.

Yes, sometimes you can swap PCBs and plate between customs (see hineybush's PCB) because they follow similar trends, but it's much less likely with OEM boards.

2.1 render doesn't seem to match side profile 1? Looks like it goes straight back while the side profile 1 had a nice subtle curvature toward the middle. That's what was so attractive about it imo.

I agree. The original side profile 1 has a graceful swoop vibe, which goes well with the bottom design.

Pretty sure they have ISO support. The initial rendering / prototype was purely conceptual.

Is there anywhere else to place the yin and yang (current on top of the arrow keys)? It's kinda jarring against all the sharp angles.

Did explore how to make it seamless, but with the curve profile, it would be almost impossible for me to do so.

I like the area it's in, but it's driving me crazy that it's centered horizontally but not vertically.

That is how the taichi symbol is, placing it horizontally is not correct.

I think they mean they would like it a cm or so lower so it is centered between Page Down and the right arrow keys

yeah, I understand that that is the correct orientation of the symbol, but the symbol itself doesn't look like it's aligned with anything.

Am in discussion on cost and how to bring this to the market. Trying to avoid middleman vendors as well.
Do note the amount of curves, fillets in this project is significant, which will certainly add up to machining hours and QC itself.

More photos of the Black prototype. Currently in talks with PCB manufacturer to make sure bad PCBs don't happen.

Meanwhile just enjoy the pictures.

Really interested, i love the rounded edges on this :)

1. Currently doing test fitting with PCB, working with PCB manu
2. Trying to CNC the new logo and see if it works, else would revert logo back to original design
3. Thinking of a way to deal with payments and collections, not doing PayPal since it locks up fund easily. Thinking of Transferwise.
4. Working with Eve at the moment on colour selection, pricing for additional parts etc.
5. Targeted price at USD 320 (not confirmed), excluding shipping and other fees. Base kit includes Keyboard + PCB + Bag
6. Estimated to start next week or the week after. Will open GBs for locals in Singapore/Msia first then Intl. China will probably be ran as a separate GB directly from Eve side.

7. Looking to help the settle the Moon and Mira replacement parts in the other GB so we could have a good start

Does the Singapore/Msia included in the 60 units? Hoping I can get a spot. I really love this!  :p

Yeap, reason being I am in Singapore locally so I can act as a proxy for pickup. Easier for RMA as well. Not that I am expecting any issues here.

most of the allocation will still go to overseas, don't worry about spots at the moment.

Expected over 400 because EVE, but 320 would make this very affordable. Would kill for the TX style antique finish in particular :)

Yeap, I only took a cut for 5 usd per board to cover bank fees lol. I just want the GB and boards to be pushed out.
Left the full profits to the manu, i.e. if you make your manu happy, you get a happier board lol.

New prototype for the logo insert. Thinking using enamel infill as well.
Work in progress, not properly finished at the moment, just wanted to share my joy.
