Hey, Geekhack friends,
Today I am here with an Interest Check : The Nutcracker.(was originally named ‘the nuts’ whoops)
The GB will be going LIVE on November 27, 2018 00:00, GMT +8 (aka Singapore time), which is in about 10 hours. The GB will be posted on both GH  and r/mm.

It is a switch opener with a unique and simple design, prototype just finished by today:

Right part is a cover.(In case you dropped the opener from table and damage the "teeth")

MX Testing video:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqPsftqnkXP/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Kailh Testing video:(updated 18th Nov)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqSYIldn3Zd/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Specifications:
1. Made with aluminium.

2. CNC processed and anodized.

Colors:
Black, Blue and Sliver

Price:
est around $20USD++     included shipping(still looking for the budget and reliable courier, also depends on moq and quote from cnc factory)

Why i did this?
1. I don't believe that the 3D printed one can last quite long.
2. I need lube every switch for my personal use.(Vintage Black, ergo clear, zealios stem in cherry housing and etc)
3. I need it TBH:)

Thanks:)

Edit: added that Kailh opener is a separate one

Edit 1:The GB will be going LIVE on November 27, 2018 00:00, GMT +8 (aka Singapore time), which is in about 10 hours. The GB will be posted on both GH  and r/mm .

To shorten the lead time for this GB, we currently have 400 Nutcrackers already in production: 300 MX and 100 Kailh (box switch compatible).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181126/ef9e9d1fbf152d8ccf5a4f43d02f94c8.jpg

These 400(300+100) will go on a FCFS basis when the GB goes live.

But, have no fear, if orders exceed beyond the 300 MX and 100 Kailh, we will produce more. Please buffer an additional 2 - 3 weeks lead time for this.

Thank you for reading!

Sure why not? Sick of that stupid screwdriver method and I hate paying like $11 after shipping for 3d printed plastic.

One for Kailh box isn't really necessary. You can open them without a tool faster than mx with a tool.

Looks like the Kailh cracker might work.

Glad you worked out a kailh opener as well. Now I can order one of each and when showing other people what they are, I can say look at deez nutz.  :D

But seriously, these look nice and I'm excited for both.

For first version we did it in this way.

It can open black housing cherry mx switch because the material is soft .(can open it quite easily, pic nut1)

But when we using gateron(clear housing) , zealios and other transparent housing switches, it cannot open the switch as pic nut2 shown. The problem here is because the slope of the tooth, it is too sharp.

This is version 2 prototype in pic nut3.

we increased the slope of the tooth, fixed the problem. It can open cherry mx switch, zealios, gateron switch very easily.

I think kailh cracker may work.

Could you test it with Outemu switches and let us know? Would be a total instabuy if it'd also cover those switches!

You get this to cover MX, Kailh, Gateron and Outemu and I'd throw a sack of gold on you to include threading! It'd be a switch modding endgame tool!

Not clear from pics and thread. Can you make one that opens both Kailhs and Cherry by rotating the switch by 90 degrees? This instead of 2 separate jigs.

I'd love to make a two in one nut cracker, but unfortunately it is not possible. This is because MX switches have 2 pins on both sides, and Kailh has 1 on each side. Both MX and Box have very different clasps. And to do one with both together is not possible because the front and back of the tops will be damaged.

It would be interesting to see this! I feel like you could combine the kailh and max switch opener all in one. One type of opener for each side and that way you'd have two caps on each end to cover the other side when not in use, if that makes any sense! Either way, I'd be totally down for one.

i have a switchcracker, but would hop on this in a heartbeat. the switchcracker does great on box-style switches but i still have to pry the tops off the cherry-style switches, and i just prefer the look of this over 3d printed plastic. i like the removable top on this too, seems like a nice place to put the top housing/spring/stem while lubing each switch. very excited for this!

Awesome! Looking forward to the test results. :thumb:

Just to underscore, I'm in for both crackers, but if a two-in-one solution is at all doable, I'd be ok with the higher price.

I've often thought that considering the interest in building customs and switch modding, it's really strange there aren't more custom tools available. The tools that are available are either out of stock or 3D printed stuff. I think you're doing really important work to expand the keyboard builder's toolbox here. Thank you!

Awesome design & name, LOL! Also I'm very glad to see this being made with metal, I have felt the same way about the 3D printed ones. I just have doubts that they'll stand the test of time, while there is no question with these guys. Awhile ago I was on the fence about switch openers like these as I could do just fine with the tongs from MK.com for MX style & a razor blade for Kaihl style. Although after getting my batches of Halos & opening 240 of them with a razor blade I am ready to grab something like this. Definitely will be in for at least one!

The GB will be going LIVE on November 27, 2018 00:00, GMT +8 (aka Singapore time), which is in about 10 hours.

So just to clarify: does this mean that if we order then we are guaranteed to get one, even if not one of the initial 300 + 100?

Yes but first batch only 300 + 100, next batch may take more time to make and ship.

Seriously though, does this open Holy Jesus switches? Not joking. What about Zilent and MOD-M? I spent most of the time fiddling with ALPS and Topre, don't have too much experience with MX...
