Title: USA Pacific NW/Canada Pacific SW November 3, 2012 Signature Plastics Meetup
Post by: litster on Sat, 11 August 2012, 00:59:31
Want to get a temperature of how many people maybe interested in having a keyboard meet up in the Seattle/eastside area.  Of course anyone is welcome.  If there are enough people, we can discuss where and when.

Post here if you are interested.

Anyone in the USA Pacific Northwest or Canada Southwest (is that such a thing?) are welcome.  Anyone in Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, British Columbia, are welcome.  Well, if you can get to SP bin Bellingham, WA, you are invited!

EDIT: Fill in the form to sign up!

I can do Saturday or Sunday.  Are we doing a bar type scene or a restaurant where we will sit? Day or night? Please let there be booze.

I didn't see HHKB2 pro listed anywhere on the list yet so hopefully someone will want to diddle her. Everyone wants to fondle that KMAC though =O~

I have a lounge in my apartment complex that I can reserve about maybe one or two weeks in advance. There's enough room for your keyboards and people can just hang out there, it has a nicely sized tv, wireless internet, and billiards. There's a kitchen with a breakfast bar where all your keyboards can go (or even on the billiards table if no one wants to play). And if the weather's nice you can bring stuff to grill ;) There's several food places nearby though.

Oh I'm in North Seattle.

If anyone is interested in a set of the CCnG 90 key base set I was looking to sell them. Now that I know there are a bunch of GHers in the area I figure I'd sell them off to one of you, at the cost I paid of course. I guess a trade if possible too if you have something of value haha.

And, if we meet, we could do a mini group buy of these keyboard storage boxes.  It only make sense to share locally because it would be expensive to reship.

i didnt get on this thread in time to express interest; i could meet in Seattle; alternatively if there is interest i could host an open house at Signature Plastics - it is about 90 miles north of Seattle so that may be stretching the "greater Seattle" definition but thought i would put it out there.  You can see lots of samples and get an idea of how the sausage is made.

Cool!  I would love to get a tour of SP's facility.  Though I am not sure how many people would be willing to make the trek.  Some folks from the great Vancouver, BC area may want to join in as it is very close to them.

BLJ, if we meet at SP, can it be on weekends?  Do you guys get Friday off every week?

sounds like there is some interest so lets sketch out some options.  This weekend is too soon, several people said the 1st 2 weeks of Oct are bad so it is sometime in late Oct (i am assuming Saturday is the best day) or early Nov.  I have to check a few things at home but maybe Oct the 27th??  I'll check at home this evening and get you an update tomorrow.

ok, looks like Nov 3rd would be better for me.  I'll float that as an idea to you guys - mid afternoon on Saturday Nov 3rd.  Tour of Signature Plastics, kick around some idea for keycap design, mold a few parts, people can bring some boards if they want, etc.

i am hugely interested in this, but wouldn't be able to make it until late nov most likely. ie, don't wait up for me, but i could very well be in for a round 2 or a smaller group with lit and hash. check alaskaair.com to see you there are flights from your city to the Bellingham airport.  Flying into Bellingham is cheaper than to fly to Sea-Tac, and is only about 25 mins away from SP.

i am hugely interested in this, but wouldn't be able to make it until late nov most likely. ie, don't wait up for me, but i could very well be in for a round 2 or a smaller group with lit and hash. BLJ: since you're the injection tooling expert, do you think i could pick your brain about tooling costs for the SSK revival? http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33430.0

Sure, i cruised thru your post but i am not 100% clear on the scope.  can you shoot me an email with the CAD you have; or email/PM me with some contact details and we can chat about it.
unfortunately, my CAD guy has had some health issues recently so I don't have anything concrete yet, but i'll shoot over my contact details (SP sales also has them, btw), to see if we can work out a ballpark estimate even without schems.

Horizon goes to Bellingham... usually you have to layover in seattle or another nearby airport and switch from Alaska to Horizon.
Allegiant flies straight to bham and if you live near a smaller airport you might be able to get straight there. They're not always the cheapest but it is possible to score deals from them.

Mild sedation for the car ride and chants of "these are my people" while you're there?

Actually, I've used the mild sedation method before, and it worked! Antihistamines for the win....  ;)

Edit: This is too much fun to pass up! You can count me in. I'll try to stay awake through the tour, hahaha. Could I possibly hitch a ride with someone? Either that, or I can drive. That would help circumvent the carsickness as well.

Yes, I'm still on for Saturday Nov 3rd
I am thinking early afternoon, 1:30-ish.
I dont know what the expectations are for the meet up but I'll start with what i was thinking and we can edit from there.
1- introductions, meet and greet
2- safety (ie - no forklift racing)
3- plant tour
4- show-and-tell/review samples of a few different materials and color schemes i have been looking at.  Hope to get some feedback from the group.
5- 4 hour sales pitch for a wonderful vacation time-share opportunity.
6- warm up some molding machines and mold some keycaps

we'll arrange for some light snacks and refreshments (sorry no adult beverages in the factory)

If people have backlit keyboards of any type and can bring them i'd like to check out the brightness of various boards

let me know what you think, thanks.

This sounds good!  So I suppose after the 4-hour time share sales pitch that will be some free gifts?  ;-)

To make it real, I am going to start a google spreadsheet for people to sign up, what keyboards they will bring to show, provide info which city they are in, whether they can drive or not, and then we can arrange car pool.

Okay so Rumudiez and I will be leaving Bellevue around 11:20 AM ish. We will be picking up Kellybear at Northgate mall and hopefully be there (http://goo.gl/maps/EJtDQ this address right?) by 1:30 PM!

Saturday of course :)

Also, since we'll barely make it in time (I think) I don't know how lunch thing will work out. Ideas?

I'll be around all afternoon so timing is not uber critical.  grab a bite if you need to, i can't have people passing out and falling face first into keyboards and/or molding machines.

Ben, thank you so much for hosting us today.  We learned so much about Signature Plastics and, of course, plastics.   I had an awesome time!  And thanks for all the cool caps.  We made super rare custom keycaps that only we the people who visited today have.  They are custom in that they are in special colors that are not in the regular SP color key ring.  And the color is literally shinny!  They are totally "over powered"!

I took a lot of pictures, but most of them I can't post due to confidentiality.  I will process them tomorrow and pick out a few to share.

Keycaps after the second shot, these are our custom-made OP caps:

These are made with custom metallic silver color, not available to order.  We made enough for metallic silver blank WASD and the nipple keys.  Well actually more than enough for two rolls of blanks:

A variety of spacebars, very nice colors:

A variety of first shots.  Some of these have transparent clear as the second shot, and you can see how the first shot and the second shot are joined together:

Super thick to caps, heavier than your regular keycaps:

Marble style, not available for order:

Silver and clear first shot keycaps.  The CapsLock keys are metallic red.  Both are not available for order:

These I think are the coolest of all.  The seond shot is made of RUBBER!  Not available for order:

Hi I3oilermaker, sorry if this was offside.  we had just a couple leftover parts from the last time we produced for you so they went into the swag bags which is to say we did not actually run your tools/put any use onto the mystery cap any of your legends.  I'll PM you to see what i can do for the party foul.  thanks,

Aha! The truth comes out, it is Mr. Boiler!  Since boiler gives away his mystery keycaps, it shouldn't be a problem if we get a few of his cool caps in our goodie bags.  If that is not cool, I would be happy to mail them back to Boiler or put a hammer on each of them.

I'm kinda surprised they they gave away keys from private legends.  I mean I'm ok with it for mine because you guys are cool, but whenever I want to use a private legend, I need to get authorization.

Hi I3oilermaker, sorry if this was offside.  we had just a couple leftover parts from the last time we produced for you so they went into the swag bags which is to say we did not actually run your tools/put any use onto the mystery cap any of your legends.  I'll PM you to see what i can do for the party foul.  thanks,
[/s]

these aren't the droids you're looking for.

And here I was laying out the swag bag caps to spell "mkawa"

Ben - Can I ask why the clear molded legend in a color cap are not available for order?

It seems like those would be excellent for a back-lit board.

clear molded legend?  i dont think you saw that.
these are not the droids you are looking for.

Isn't it because: The um... "grid" part of the colored shot "shows through" on (partially obscures) parts of the "clear legend (that we "didn't see")?" (wow that is some complicated punctuation...)

Someone who's first name starts with "M," once sent me a pic of "why we don't do clear-legend double-shots," in response to my best attempt at a polite and thorough, technical and specific inquiry, about why such a thing was not available (and whether they could, you know, just do it anyway...).

Obviously, i was thinking "back-light fans would love a back-lit key cap that never wears out..." (as i'm sure all you back-light fans surely would)

your post has inspired me to ditch my career in engineering and get an Eng Lit degree.  I'll have that in 4-6 years (ok lets face it, 8-12 years) and then i'll be able to decipher your punctuation and provide you an appropriate response.

In the meantime, these aren't the droids your looking for?

The way-too-over-simplified answer, basically, was:

"Because it looks like crap." (because the legend would not be able to fully and evenly illuminate)

So, yes, these are, indeed, not "the droids" we're looking for.

Although, i'm sure it could be worked out, somehow, at some point, when someone finally has the right brilliant idea to make it work out as intended.

Like, idk, maybe "Key-onardo Da Vinci."

Yes, i am ashamed of myself for making such a cringe-worthy word-play.

These are made with custom metallic silver color, not available to order.  We made enough for metallic silver blank WASD and the nipple keys.  Well actually more than enough for two rolls of blanks:

Come to think of it, a full set of these matellic silver keycaps could look really cool with my silver KMAC Or silver KMAC Mini.

Well that escalated quickly.  Now I know how mkawa feels.

I'll say it again...Didn't do it, but the only people who know this is true is Ben, Melissa, and Mystery Person.
