Wow, really nice guide! And your end result came out great, definitely didn't look like a novice cast :thumb:
This is probably the most helpful and detailed tutorial I have seen, I was wondering how to make caps without the bubbling, so this is helpful! Thanks!! I still get some bubbles, but occasionally I can get an acceptable cap with this method. :D
I have no idea what's going on but it makes me want to do it lolTry it! It's a lot of fun! I was intimidated at first, but I've found it's cool what I can do if I just dive in and go step-by-step! Feel free to PM me if you have questions :)
This is awesome. Thank you so much!
What temperature did you bake the caps at so the PBT didn't melt
ThanksWhat temperature did you bake the caps at so the PBT didn't melt
For sculpey you bake at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per cap.
PBT melting point is 433ish and ABS is 221 (fahrenheit). I did use ABS once and it did not melt for me but I don't know that I would try it again.
I enjoyed the read as well. Lately I wondered how to make keycaps and I've been looking for information. Thanks for the guide. I may contact you in a while for more info if you don't mind.
Yep great images really helping me out. Yours came out crazy good for a first attempt I am going to assume mine are going to come out looking like chewed up chewing gum. I am going to flow this exactly with the same place process for pouring in the resin through the top. I have seen people do it from the side and I think your method would work out much better. AMAZING KEY CAP! :D
Nice write up booper :thumb:Thanks! I read to do that on an old tutorial that seems to be no longer available :( (nevermind, I found an archived version!) (https://web.archive.org/web/20100723181924/http://www.alumilite.com/HowTos/TailLightCastingNoEquipment.cfm)
I especially found it interesting on how you brushed your mould with the resin before pouring it all in, haven't read that in any of the other keycap making articles.
Have you been able to test if it does reduce the amount of bubbles you get by doing a few casts without brushing the mould as a reference?
Great keycap!
Looks like fun, might have to put it on the "things to do some day" list!

Haha, thanks! Starting with a nice, smooth, clean design is important too I think! Also, I don't pour the resin in the top, those hole are for excess plastic to seep through and for bubbles to escape throughNice write up booper :thumb:Thanks! I definitely think it helps! There are a lot of spots where the plastic has a hard time filling properly so making sure those areas get filled in before I pour the rest helps a lot. In this keycap, he gets bubbles mainly in the hose area and the stems on the back can be a pain in the ass.
The cap on the left has a stem bubble, the one in the middle has one in the hose and the one on the right is pretty decent.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/WAVBtTa.jpg?1)
I've found in some cases when I just pour, the plastic starts to fill in the hose cavity from both the right and the left and a bubble will get trapped in the middle where they meet, if that makes any sense? Brushing helps that out!Great keycap!
Looks like fun, might have to put it on the "things to do some day" list!
Do it! It's not too bad once you get all the materials together :)

We you mind sharing a list of the materials you used and how much it all cost you to get started. I am really fascinates with this.

To get started, it's about $120 to get all your materials in TRIAL SIZE. You can make 3-5 molds and a lot of caps with the trials size versions. I got my stuff from Reynolds Advanced Materials (http://www.reynoldsam.com/). If you call them for advice, they are VERY helpful and knowledgable.
Initially I ordered Smooth cast 327, omoo 30, a sample pack of colors, and mold release. Miscellaneous items like rubber gloves, small cups, small scale, etc. will come in handy.
the 327 has a low viscosity which means it has a longer pot life (drying time?) This is good if you have no equipment so you have some time to work out the bubbles.
Personally, even when I don't get bubbles I am still not completely satisfied with the quality from casting like this. To get better quality/clear caps, you will need to spend a nice chunk of $$ for equipment and materials (bulk materials, pressure chamber, vacuum chamber, etc.)

Ugh this makes me want to go play in Binge's basement again. Thanks for sharing Booper. Looking forward to seeing more updates :).Why don't you! Me and a couple of other kids, even some younger than 10, are hanging out in Binge's basement right now, although I don't know when we will get out...

Time for an update!
I kinda knew there would be a point where I would want to buy equipment or give up on doing this because I couldn't handle the bubbles! I felt like it was a waste of time and materials to keep making caps that would have bubbles no matter what sooooo I decided to buy an air compressor and pressure chamber.
I've used it a few time now and initial results are looking good! I also sculpted a new design while I was waiting on the equipment/more materials.
Here are some pictures from the new batches! These are with molds and casting done in a pressure chamber. Two new ones (at least new to me) and I can't pick a favourite because they're both so good - great work!
Good lord you sure seem to have gotten the hang of casting in a hurry! These are wonderful Booper, the little monkey is so damn cute and I love your choice of colors! Hope you start selling these, cause those purples would go so well with the Bro Set (https://ctrlalt.io/buys/the-bro-set) I'm using :-*
I think that decides it in favour of the horny lady, does she have a name yet?

:) haha, I tend to get pretty sucked into my hobbies and I really enjoy making things! I'd like to work on color consistency in batches and a few other things still. If I can get my ducks in a row, I may have smalls sales here and there but I don't really want to commit to anything at this point.
Good stuff. Which pressure chamber did you purchase?
Oooo, such progress booper :D. Great work. I call dibs on the trans purple monkey ;)If we're doing dibs I'll take the grey horny lady please :))
Wow Booper,
These look absolutely amazing. I can't believe how much of a difference there is between using vac/pressure and without. I've heard that Harbor Freight has a higher chance of failure. Did you find that to be the case?

I wouldn't trust a Harbor Freight pressure pot. I've heard too many horror stories.

I would say with a budget of $300 you could make a large batch of caps of this quality with a vacuum pot. They are not all the expensive she linked the $100 one she bought in the thread. The main part is sculpting your design you need real talent to do something this beautiful.

Oh ok, the last time I looked for a vacuum pot I saw crazy prices so I gave up instantly. But you're right it needs a high level of graphic skill if you want to make something sophisticated. That's what is also restraining me from doing it. I'd have to find a great idea at first which is not the case ATM.

I would urge you to give it a go maybe just try with a small amount of materials without a pot, you will most probably get hooked. It is very stressful but hella rewarding when you have caps on your keyboard you can say you designed and made yourself. Gooooooo on risk it ;)

Click my siggy it goes to my thread showing you what I did. I used super sculpty clay, sculpted it on top of a PBT cap and baked it. (well my girlfriend has done the desgins because I have no talent). But I have made so many mistakes so ask someone else if you need advice sorry. Lol

Ideally, a vacuum and pressure setup would be the best. I currently only have a pressure chamber with an air compressor and no vacuum. The pressure does a lot of the work it seems, but I think the vacuum would be very nice to have for degassing my silicone.
You can get a pressure chamber and basic materials sorted for a couple hundred bucks, but yea, in order to not get any bubbles you have to have some equipment. I could only afford to purchase vacuum OR pressure for now and I went with pressure. Here is a decent starting point for info (http://www.instructables.com/id/Bubble-Free-Resin-Casts-with-Modified-Paint-Tank/)

Well I'd like to maybe work on getting a B&B package together with a neat box, maybe some little graphics/cards/stickers made by each of us and we each have a key in the boxed set with the cool schwag. Totally something from each of us and then we make enough so each of us has some to provide to the community via website or GH or event etc.
Not to be a jerk but please be very careful with the harbor freight pressure canisters. They are made of questionable steel and often explode. A 2 1/2 gallon tank at the rated 60 PSI suggested working pressure of casting is a large boom if it goes off. Please get yourself something from an engineer certified manufacturer like BINKS.

(in hindsight, I wish I would have cleaned up the edges more before taking photos! but o well)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/1LXTS0b.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/SIJ7WDi.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/8tt0vYH.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/14yITt8.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/Bnhrx9G.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/od96llj.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/taUY8bI.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/tyHhb2B.jpg)

Your resin might be mercury catalyzed, but even if it isn't- skin and especially mouth contact is super dangerous.
The caps are looking great. :thumb:
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the chance to get one of the mon-keys.
Great job and very nice looking caps.
I cant wait to see more Booper! :D :thumb:
What's the minimum price of a properly safe pressure pot?
What's the minimum price of a properly safe pressure pot?
It varies tremendously. On average $500. You can get a decent and safe vacuum setup for a fraction of that.
Could you set up a donation collection thing for a new pressure canister? It would be terrible to see something unfortunate happen.

Thx. Was just curious.
Does a pressure pot give better results than a vacuum chamber?
I second this! Don't put it in your mouth! MFW (http://i.imgur.com/sLwJpr3.jpg) I got splashed with some of this stuff. I had to rock that super sexy rash for a while and it hurt like hell. You may not be as allergic as I am, but you should be very careful with chemicals.

I got that **** all over my forearms before I decided to be smart and use latex gloves I stole from the hospital lol. Yours looks much worse though T.T

Fill deep cavities with the syringe, it'll help keep air from being caught in there. You can also use it to suck air bubbles out if your using a translucent resin and can spot them.If you're being serious (I hope not), please:Not to be a jerk but please be very careful with the harbor freight pressure canisters. How would you use the syringe to get bubbles out exactly? Would you just inject the resin with it or do you actually blow air into the cast with the syringe after you're done pouring?
Whew! It's been a looong time since I've updated. Mostly because I haven't had much to say! I've just been buying equipment and refining things my designs. It's been a long and arduous process but I've finally gotten a few of my artisans to a quality that I am fairly pleased with. Soooo, I thought it was time to update!
I'm hoping to do a small sale sometime in the next month and I'll post the color options about a week before the sale. For now, here are a few baby blue single-shot caps to show you guys where I'm at now!Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/IBBSJrj.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/5uT3wvh.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/7NrAT8c.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/jFSZY5c.jpg)
I'm also working on some topre/alps blanks and few other projects that I'll be posting at some point! Although I probably will only do the Lillith, MonKey and Astronaut in the first sale.

Well it's about time, these were good months ago before refinement so they must be perfect now - they certainly look it!
No way I'm going to miss this sale even if it's at 4am :thumb:
Wow, those look really amazing! Great style. Clean lines with no bubbles that I can see. Smooth textures. You are an elite sculptor and molder, Booper!
Looking great Boop!

Well, it's not like I'm pouring molten aluminum or anything! It's just cold casting by adding aluminum powder. But thank you!

Oh haha that shows how much I don't know about casting. I was thinking you had made some sort of clay mold and were pouring metal while wearing some sort of shiny suit with a welding mask.
Still looks awesome though!
Gorgeous casts! Are these cold casted with aluminum powder? They are incredibly clean. Bravo!

If these are the colours for the first sale it's looking like the first by any artisan where I'd be happy with any cap on offer - they'll look amazing with Hyperfuse!

What do you think about drilling the sprues in the second half of the mold instead of gluing poles onto the keycap? I'm having trouble getting the poles to stand :(

Awesome guide, helps a lot. And the keycaps are awesome love the colors.
I'm a complete newbie were it comes to cast resing, I would like to know which ones you think are best and will they accept any pigment ( like mixing some watercolor paint with the 2 part resin for example. Sorry if it sound stupid, I really have no clue how resin works :-X )

I dunno! I've never tried anything but the vertical sprues. I thought about doing them on the side because it seemed easier, but my reasoning was:
1) air bubbles want to go up so making them turn and go out of a hole on the side seemed like it might cause bubbles to trap.
2) I didn't want sprue marks in a noticeable area. Putting them on the bottom makes them fairly easy to clean up and I don't have to worry about a blemish on the side of the cap.
3) messy! with the holes on top, the excess resin will usually pool up on top and I don't have to worry as much about getting it all over the place.
Yea, it's a pain in the ass to get them to stay upright! A lot of patience and a tiiiiny bit of super glue do the trick though.Awesome guide, helps a lot. And the keycaps are awesome love the colors.

I haven't used many different brands of resin so I'm not sure! I use pigment drops made for resin coloring though. I have tried to use a few other things like fountain pen ink (ha) but got varying results. I haven't tried watercolors... but I would not recommend putting water in with your resin at all if you are doing it that way. You don't want ANY water in your resin.
little update..
I know I said was having a sale in two weeks like... a month ago? ha. Oops.
I ordered some little stickers to go with the sale over 4 weeks ago and they still haven't shipped so I'm kinda just waiting on that. Expected turn around time was supposed to be two weeks and I sent my order in early just in case! Grrrr! buuut so it goes. Hopefully I'll get them in soon and then I'll be ready to go! I've thought about just doing the sale and saying "screw it!" on the stickers.. but I've waited this long so I might as well hold out.
In other news..I got my wisdom teeth out about 3 weeks ago. Everyone said it wouldn't be a big deal, but recovery has been hell. Allergic to medication + dry socket + random pain and swelling. I'll spare you all the details but I'm starting to feel much better. I've been so unproductive lately :( wisdom teeth removal is the worst. 0/10. would not recommend.
Anyway, I'll update when I have an ETA on the stickers. Thanks for bearing with me! :D

Booper you an inspiration. The quality you were able to achiev w/ plain old gravity castingin your early **** is astonishing.
So now booper is back to smiling: ;D ?
Sorry that the ice cream didn't fix your teeth, you'd best look after the rest as sounds like you'll have problems if you loose them later on. At least it's over for now though :)
Had a week off checking for a sale and at least two back on it, but still no sign - now I know why! Can we at least have another teaser pic of what's available to drool over while we wait or is it going to be a surprise?

lol, now I just have an ice cream addiction! I'm trying to ween myself off of it by transitioning to yogurt.
As for more colors, I'm going to wait until sale time to show what all is available. I kind of like the fun of it!
I will say though that I will have 1 surprise keycap that will be free to a random winner. Anyone who enters the sale will get a chance to win it. ha. actually, I'll just go take a picture of it....
Ok. I was experimenting with different methods of doing colors with casting and one thing led to another until I made what I call Bowie monkey. He's aluminum with 3 color and styled from the Aladdin Sane cover. If anyone who enters the sale isn't interested in him, there will be an option to elect out of the drawing. :thumb:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/yJU3XW4.jpg)
Is bowie monkey painted?
Also, will this sale contain blanks? (Like you showed a few pages ago)
Ah, thanks for the explanation! Is bowie monkey painted?
Also, will this sale contain blanks? (Like you showed a few pages ago)
yes and no? I paint a layer into the mold and then pour on top of that. So the result is similar to dyesub probably... where the color isn't a thick solid chunk of plastic, but rather pigment that seeps up into the resin. It's not painted after the fact so it is embedded in the surface of the cap and doesn't scratch or peel off.
Also, no blanks yet. I needed to make some adjustments so that it would sit a hair lower down on the stem :(

I went ahead and bought one off the classifieds, it's close enough and comes with a full raindrop set (nngh), very excited.

LoL... yea, maybe not the best time for Americans who have a social life, but it's the best time I could do where everyone world wide could make it without having to be present at a ridiculous hour! Also... smartphones! :D

Oh---- hey you know I'm not complaining! And I'm way too into this to be on a smartphone. My monkey trader was apprehensive, so still trying to get my first monkey and astronaught. Hey Boop, how many can we buy? I'd like to win 1 of each but I understand limiting everyone to 1 cap. I'm gonna say my prayer to RNGesus all day Saturday. Think I should fast, too? Yeah. I'll fast.
I'm going to let people win up to 3 caps! But if a name is drawn and a person wants 3 caps, they will get 1 cap on the first draw and the name will be put back into the RNG pool. So to win 3, you'd have to be drawn 3 times. :thumb:
Hey Booper! How much are you planning to sell your magnificent caps?
Wooo hooo!! I FINALLY got these damn stickers in the mail SO I'm ready to have a sale.
Sale will be this Saturday at 6:00pm

*The sale will be via google form - I will provide a link to the form when it's closer to time.
*The form will be up for 1 hour. At the end of the hour, all entries will be fed to RNG and winners will be sent an invoice.

Are you sure those aren't Pogs?
Are you sure those aren't Pogs?
Hahaha, they made me think of Pogs as well!
But seriously I'm in for this. Booper is an artist with obviously many talents. G'luck to you all, but I will be winning the dope keys, packaging, and (of course) stickers.
Hey Booper, wanna say congrats on your first sale of your amazing caps. People are gonna eat these up!
Wow sick, can't wait to see all the caps! :D
Is the sticker transparent like the logo on the purple bag or does it have a white outline?
50ish people watching this thread for about the last hour.
Quite the crowd.

haha, I almost feel like one of the cool kids! :-[
Also, I forgot to mention that you'll have to give a Geekhack username for the sale as I want to avoid people signing up with different accounts/usernames.

Finally a date and time, looks like the stickers were well worth the wait :D I'm loving the multi draw to win multiple caps setup idea too, very fair - seems you've thought this through so I'm sure it will go very smoothly.
Just to check your timer is counting down to 6pm UTC? That's a good time, but I'm expecting you to be calling that lunchtime as you're in the US and you said 6pm...
Oops. My bad. Timer won't change but I was wrong.. it will be NOON my time.
10:00am San Francisco - 12:00 noon Chicago - 7:00 pm London
Boop, why you do dis. Saturday is usually when I sleep in. :'(

We're +1 at the moment though so that's 7 here. I think

I don't knoooow! I was going to do 6pm my time.. but the timer is already set up and people have already seen it! :'(
Will this be a first come first served kinda sale?

Is the sale for the specific blue/purple colorway? I was hoping to get my hands on one of those all sky blue kosmonauts you've traded away before ;D
I know you had said you need to have a registered GH account to enter... but is there going to be a requirement for the age of the account??? I only very recently registered because linkshine and xx7 kept bugging me to get over here, but I've been very active on r/mechanicalkeyboards for a while. I haven't gotten any artisans yet, but Deep Space is my favorite set and on my primary pok3r, and I'd love a shot at some of those caps.

I'm hyped up for this, I've been waiting for a chance to get one of these caps. ^-^
Are these caps compatible with topre-mx sliders/novatouch sliders?

If you want to make it 6pm your time that wouldn't be so bad Booper - everyone can come early and find it changed, it doesn't work the other way (if they think it's 6 your time they'll miss it...) I would feel sorry for the Aussies who've already set an alarm though!
Of course this has nothing to do with the fact I just found out I'll be stood outside in a crowd from about 6:45 (7 saletime) for approximately 1.5 hours. Hopefully I'll have reception and the form is easy :-X
Is the google form going to be displayed in the OP. It's kinda hard to hunt for the specific post. For instance, I had to comb through a few post to find your sale post and countdown timer.

I'm going to make a whole new thread for the sale in just a few minutes.

Haha, weeellll... I read the Redwall series growing up and one of my favorite books was the Long Patrol which was about an elite unit of badass hares. One of the Long Patrol hares was Colonel Tussock and he was described as having a monocle in one eye and the other eye is always closed. I didn't set out to make that character exactly, but obviously it was inspiration! I was like "why do I have this idea? Must have been in Redwall or something!" then I remembered that character!

Haha, yea. It is on that one! It seems like a ton of shots, but sometimes I'll do more than 1 color at a time. Like the nose and monocle can be done at the same time if you mix separate colors.

I think you're being modest. It looks like the monocle itself is a doubleshot (gold metallic resin frames + sparkly white resin lens), so you could do maybe the frames and nose at the same time, but the whole monocle?
There's no easy way to make an intricately detailed1 and seemless sextuple-tone cap.
Don't downplay it Booper. That pink-nosed cap is like a goddamn Faberge egg.
1 And for the purposes of this conversation, let's set aside the exquisite sculpting job.

How did you make just the gold ring around the monocle though? Did you put something inside to stop the resin from getting into the middle? Also... Can i has one?

Tell me about it. I thought penumbra keywok was my favorite, until I saw this. Never had a chance to enter a booper raffle. And with the current resale prices, they are out of my league. Hope it'll happen some day.

Quick question before I buckle and spend a ton on aftermarket, any plans for another cosmo run?

Answer: Even if there aren't plans for more just wait for the right deal to pop up instead of spending a ton.

I really hope I get one of these Amelia caps. My friends sister drew my picture sometime last year for me to use all over, and in CSGO my twilight galaxy glock is named Amelia with a Ivette holograph sticker.

I finally made something with the :~$ynth!
I've been wanting to for a while but found it kinda intimidating for some reason. It also is hard for me to like... let other people help me and it kinda always felt like the synth was cheating or collaborating!
BUT that's what is so cool about this hobby! Ultimately the creations and sharing are what makes this community grow and stay active! So yea, here is my synth cap creation.... inspired by one of my faaaaavorite things :D
Thanks to Binge and Joey and all the cool people out there who make and share things!!!! <3 <3 <3Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/EaAjAAD.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/Jwy69MY.jpg)

I'm pretty excited about having a new cosmo AND the collaboration opportunities! Anyone who can sculpt something tiny enough to fit in the visor can pretty much do so! It's something I've been wanting to get sorted ever since KK blew us all away with the KOSOMO collaboration and I finally think I've got it sorted out! (anything that goes in would have to be FOR REAL tiny tho... this thing magnifies like a loupe!
