What is the box with the cross on the top left,  is that an intercom? or a ventilation fan.

Doesn't make sense to have a ventilation fan so close to an ac unit.. hrrrrmm.. probably intercom..

or speakers since there's one on the left too..

But then from where she's seated,  that's the wrong position for stereo, unless she has an audio delay timer to adjust for it..

Why does everyone else'e desktop look so much better than mine?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It's Windows actually :) What you see there is a Rainmeter skin called Breeze by MarianBrinkmann, with a custom color scheme (just checked and it seems the skin author recently deleted their DA account which it was from unfortunately).

For the Windows equivalent I set the taskbar to autohide on left of the display, since it's the least likely edge of the screen to be accidentally triggered by common mouse actions.

Mine (Arch) is downright boring these days. I still need to do an OpenBSD install--so far I've installed NetBSD and FreeBSD. NetBSD was easier but FreeBSD was less frustrating because of ports.

edit - Right, I guess the Debian (gaming w/proton, etc.) installation is a bit less boring

Hapless research: Fedora 29 Mate edition and FreeBSD 12 with Mate desktop.  Checking out Fedora package management and native OpenZFS with FreeBSD.

Fedora 29 Mate somehow 'remembers' this ancient dual monitor configuration when I unplug/replug the external vga monitor which for me is surprising as hell.

Pop!_OS would be fun to try out, I have troubles with Debian/Ubuntu Gnome3 on this lappy (Fedora 29 Gnome3 seems ok) though.

Nothing too GPU/CPU intensive obviously.  Some 8bit with Fedora, vim, PDFs, podcasts, Joplin note taking/syncing, etc.

I guess certain mobile devices could be decent desktops.  Technologies like Samsung DeX look especially interesting.

Just yesterday I used the Cockpit web app via this tiny tablet to help with Docker container management research.

Changed the hostname of my local test server, checked container activity, and rebooted the desktop computer running the server all with a tiny pos kindle fire 7 lol.
