[IC] GMK Paper (Black on White) [GMK Renders In]
« on: Sat, 26 May 2018, 02:28:41 »
What is GMK Paper?

A classy black (CR) on white (WS1) cherry profile set with clean legends (graciously borrowed 9009).

Why?

With all the colorful new keebs coming out (M60-A anyone?), I thought people might love a nice neutral GMK set.

Renders

I got excited and ordered some renders from janglad. I have since collaborated with jebbra on some of the kit, so these are mostly just for show -- there will be more keys in the actual base set.

A copy of 9009's base kit in WoB

Also, as some people have pointed out, the renders might a tad creamier than actual WS1. Here's a link to a WS1 (Blue on White) set for comparison. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=82308.msg2252234#msg2252234

Proposed Kits
These are screenshots copied from KLE -- the actual legends will be match the renders (9009 style Icon/Text mix).

Base (Updated 6.3)

Tried to support a variety of layouts since this is such a standard color way. NOTE: the 2u, 2.25u and 2.75u spacebars*

*sumbitted for quotes to GMK along with a few other options. See the kits submitted here https://imgur.com/a/gZNQz5w

Accent

Mostly Jebbra's creation, this accent kit is inspired by color proofing, tying into the loose 'Paper' theme. It leverages the fact CMYK mods and spacebars are already widely available (I believe Originative often has them in stock). The keys will be N5 (cyan) MG1 (magenta) CV (yellow) and CR (black). The legend will be CR for all. NOTE: The legends are currently incorrect, and I think we will need to tweak the CR on CR some.

Also, if there's enough demand, I'd like to see about adding a watser to this kit, or perhaps a set of CMYK on White watsers... ;) (Have not heard demand, so I'm tabling the issue)

What next?
  • Gather feedback / judge interest Currently, tweaking the base kit -- updated layouts soon!
  • Submit the proposed kits to GMK for pricing -- We are currently waiting for quotes from GMK! See the album of proposed kits here https://imgur.com/a/gZNQz5w
  • Discuss timing -- I know there's a lot of cherry profile running right now, so we can postpone til a dry season if necessary

Anyway, thanks everyone for taking a look. Feedback is welcome!

P.S. Shoutout, to janglad, fishpod and jebbra for helping make this IC happen :)

small suggestions:

actual division and multiplication symbols on the numpad (burgundy r2, fishbed, others)

no front print on the numpad (looks much cleaner)

WS1 is SUPER white. perhaps look at other whites that GMK supplies. WS1 isn't bad, but I don't know how well it'll be received.

CMY kit is unique and different than the others that've happened. if there was a seperate Esc pack, I'd get it for sure.

otherwise it's perfect imo, kit seems complete

This is the feedback I got from Jebbra as well. Is this the new standard? My goal was to keep things classic, but I'm not a numpad user so I am very receptive to people's opinions.

Ditto the above. But to clarify, do you mean sublegends instead or neither?

This set was somewhat born out of the thread for the last BoW-ish set (GMK Pristine), where there was a strong segment pushing for WS1.

Thanks for the input!

Any chance for scooped homing keys or split spacebars (including convex 2u)?

I second having the division, etc, symbols. No sublegends on the numpad would be my preference.

Great kit, I've been waiting for a proper BoW set to come out for a while now since Stormtrooper is fairly ancient now and between Pristine, the new KBDfans epbt and this, the choice is very easy.

I'm all for pursuing colour kits of sorts, CMYK or otherwise, too. Far as suggestions go I'd just like to see smaller space bars somewhere; as in 2.25, 2.75 and 1.25, in my case.

Nice work!

Yes

OP: there won't be a dry season per se. There's an interest check every couple of weeks. I also suggest a spacebar kit as Vigrith mentioned.

Stormtrooper was CP, and looks great. WS1 is super white. I have a feeling a lot of people haven't seen stormtrooper or know what a full ws1 set would look like. Just my opinion though. Pristine is L9 which is basically beige, not white.

So you mean, if it was gmk pristine, the set currently in stock on zfrontier?

Why would he run another pristine when it’s still available???

This is what WS1 keycap set looks like http://kbdlab.co.kr/index.php?document_srl=3904226 (with V4 legends).  They are sterile white, gives unnatural bleached look.
My personal preference is CP over WS1.

Slight preference for CP but not a big deal personally. Only primary legends on numpad.

Would be in for sure if text only modifier legends were offered. Too many icon only on offer lately.

Stormtrooper on a completely white board still looks stellar imo, but there is a difference. I believe the WS1 for GMK Paper will look great as well.

Hey guys, loving all the feedback! Let me try and answer the outstanding questions / send a few more your way.

Do I see a row 2 backspace over there?

There's a 1.5u R2 (ala HHKB), a 1u R2 and a 1.75u R2. The legends will be the ICON arrow legend.

Any chance for scooped homing keys or split spacebars (including convex 2u)?

I was planning on including both scooped and bars. Also, there are 2.25u and 2.75u spacebars on the right side of the kit. Does this fulfill the split spacebar requirement?

I second having the division, etc, symbols. No sublegends on the numpad would be my preference.

Sounds like we will be changing the symbols.

Are there any more kits planned? I could use norde support.

No further kits planned, but I'd love to offer a norde kit if there's enough demand. Can you link me to what a proper norde kit might look like?

Far as suggestions go I'd just like to see smaller space bars somewhere; as in 2.25, 2.75 and 1.25, in my case.
I also suggest a spacebar kit as Vigrith mentioned.

There's a 2.25u and 2.75u spacebar on the right side of the kit. I was hoping this would cover most use cases. Would you guys rather a separate kit? My main concern is MOQ for smaller kits. We could also try throwing a 2u into the base kit.

Will this include the icon only mods in the render or text in the layout screenshot?
Icon, sorry for the confusion. I'll bold that part in the original post.

As for all the CP vs WS1 discussion, I'd like to push this forward as a WS1 set, though I agree CP looks stellar as well. Honestly, I initially got the renders in both CP and WS1 for comparison and opted to pursue WS1 because
  • I saw a lot of vocal demand here on GH
  • It has never been run before afaik
  • I thought the WS1 render looked awesome

No.  GMK has been pumping sets out pretty quickly.  Stock color sets have been around 3 months for production lately.

WS1 probably is fine, but I'd suggest taking a look at a WS1 set.  Just to make sure and avoid an unexpected surprise at the end.
It feels quite different in person from the rendering. (I own a WS1 set--Blue on White run by Cocobrais).

I think the concept is really neat. Are the accent kits going to be like a classic #2 pencil and eraser color? I think that would be interesting. Or are you sticking to CMYK?

The accent derived from CMYK printer's mark in offset printing industry. Because this set is white as paper, I thought any accent/novelties related to printing will be neat. Here's some example of printer's mark:

196583-0

196585-1

196587-2

I'm thinking to add the registration mark too as the novelties, what do you think?

196590-3

Some of the split-spaced keyboard use 2u + 1.25u to accomodate middle fn (which is nice!).

How about taking out the split spacebars and 40s from basekit, and making a kit consisting of complete split-spacebars (1u convex 1.25, 2u convex, 2.25, 2.75), 40s, and some keys for ortholinear board? Some people advising me about this on Slack.
