[IC] Fox Lab Leaf 80 (updated on 08/06)
« on: Sun, 22 July 2018, 10:16:44 »

Leaf 80 is yet another TKL keyboard case design after Orange TKL and Time TKL.

The case itself was designed to be simple. PCB will be A87 or B87 standard. ALPS support TBD.

We may introduce several brand new colors if this GB is doable. Several prototypes have been finished and are ready for anodizing. I will post photos here when I get them.

Sorry for the brief introduction. Any comments/suggestions?

Love the colors, the salmon and the yellow especially. One suggestion is to make the weight substantial or make the case heavy. I have the Time and the resonance in it due to being relatively light is only thing I would like to see improved.

Cool colors in the renders--especially the pink and the light cyan; I like the leaf weight.

Cool design. Would definitely appreciate some "natural" colors:

- Olive Green
- Autumn Leaf tan (red/brown/bronze)
- Algae Green
- a vivid red

I too like the light cyan color as well.

Love the color choices for the renders and the leaf weight. The salmon pink/ yellow is my favorite. I do second the option that olive green, autumn colors would look good for the theme.

Thanks for the suggestions. The weight actually is not as small as it seems like. Most portion of the weight is hidden inside the bottom housing.

Gradient ano is very pretty! How do you match the top and bottom casing together to make sure gradients are consistent?

AFAIK you can't truly do a 1:1 recreation of the gradient across different pieces, so each one will vary (slight to moderate differences). If you notice, the gradient ano pics don't show any side/seam/bottom piece shots, and the one that you can kind of see the back side of the bottom piece it isn't matched.

Same, what caught my eye were the colors in the initial render. If this ends up straying too far from that, I would definitely reconsider getting this.

Also am I crazy, or did I see a powder-coating option mentioned at one point? I can't find it anymore, but it might be easier to match those initial render pics that way.

There won't be powder-coating options. MAO is possible tho.

Camo anodizing prototype.

So the color options will be black, yellow, gradient, camo, red, white, green. Any other suggestions?

I'm guessing there won't actually be two yellow colors, yeah? And that blue that was shown off will also be one of the colors, correct? I think a nice leaf-y green color would be cool too if possible.

i know traditionally the gbs for kbs are done with colors preselected but maybe we should try switching things up. especially in this case since i think we may have the opportunity for some cool colors. if you're willing senter, how about setting a low moq and listing all the colors possible. the colors that make it get produced and maybe we can get some cool and unique colors out there? maybe something like 5 for moq. this is also in response to a gb i was in recently where 5 colors were offered for 50 boards and only three people asked for black.

and numpad please if possible ;)

For one, you can make a massive range of colours so uhh don't take it too literally but "anything's possible".
Secondly, that kind of GB will not only take longer than usual, it would likely cause a higher defect rate as well.
It's a cool thought, but what makes stops me at least from considering it is the pure amount of work and risk you take up asking with it.

It's not possible to list all the colors as options. The factory can do tons of colors. Even they don't have the anodizing pools for a specific color right now, they can build one if necessary. Also, with exactly the same dye, the colors can be way different if the anodizing duration is different.

MxBlue is correct that it's risky to provide too many colors especially the ones that the factory never tried before. I will choose 8 colors at most when GB starts.

makes sense and thanks for explaining. i guess i'm just kind of over seeing black, silver, grey, and red being offered in every gb when more exotic colors are possible. i think the blue showed as a proto is pretty awesome (and likely my leading choice). i think a deep blue would also be nice. most blues in gbs seem to exist around 2/3 shade skewing to the darker side.

a very light (tinted) purple would also be cool. but seeing as there isn't some rigid color scheme, it probably means it could look like something within a wide spectrum.

Here are the photos of electrophoresis coating finish.

I'm hesitating about some colors on the list tbh. It's not easy to handle the color difference problem when the thickness of top and bottom cases differs a lot. I may consider electrophoresis coating finish more for Leaf 80 as it's easier to make the colors consistent.

Here are the photos of electrophoresis coating finish.

Interesting, I've tried out an electrophoretic coating myself, on mirror polished brass (unsuccessfully unfortunately haha). How is the texture on the surface? It looks a lot more matte from your photos than anodizing, reminds me of how dull MAO can look.

Electrophoretic coating is technically similar to powder coating but way smoother, even smoother than most anodizing.

The white housings and black plate are all electrophoretic coated. These are the only two matte colors the factory already have. Other colors are shinny colors which look not good to me.

Creating other e-coating matte colors are possible but extremely expensive. I may only choose black and white e-coating colors for now.

Black and white will be e-coating. Another white will be MAO. Other anodizing colors include yellow, red, green, and gradient(blue=>purple). Camo has been removed. Still need one color to fill in the list and make it 8 colors in total.

Is it possible to get a gradient board that goes from purple=>blue?

I was thinking of putting Vilebloom on it, and thinking it would look better if it transitioned from purple to blue, rather than the other way around.
Plus it'll really go well with the whole "leaf" motif.

Edit: Actually looking at it more, I'd be satisfied with any direction of gradient. My opinion is 50/50 on which looks better.

I received a lot of suggestions about the gradient color. While I'm always willing to explore new options, it's risky to do so. The gradient anodizing varies from case to case. It will be available but only in the way I think is safe. We'll see what we can do.

As a side note, it's really hard to make anodizing colors milky.
This is the closest we can get to the yellow color in the render.

this looks pretty cool. out of curiosity, what would the additional cost for electrophoresis coating be in a yellow? i think you'd have a better chance of getting am milky finish that way?

As a side note, it's really hard to make anodizing colors milky.
This is the closest we can get to the yellow color in the render.

Looks great, even when it is not as vibrant as in the renders

this looks pretty cool. out of curiosity, what would the additional cost for electrophoresis coating be in a yellow? i think you'd have a better chance of getting am milky finish that way?

As I explained earlier, only black and white are available as matte colors in the electrophoresis coating factory. Other colors are shinny ones which don't look good to me. Developing new matte colors are super expensive. The quote was like $4000 for each color. That's not what we can afford.

The ALPS plate will be 1.2mm brass.

ALPS is already niche enough. Only the best option will be available for the cool guys.

Interested. The e-white is awesome; was promised one for my Klippe but Leandren backed out of that one and so settled for grey instead, and my interim KBD75 is pooping out. It's been about a year and a half and I really want to return to TKL.

Is it available to put aluminum or brass name tag at 'leaf' part? For example there was color options for GB:Time TKL for name tag of "Time' at the front

The design is final.

The price will be $320 for most versions. The factory quotes/makes brass plates only as extra parts so we decided to order aluminum ALPS plates as well. Aluminum kit with aluminum ALPS plate is $320 if that's the version you are interested in.

good news, aluminum is better than brass for alps IMO. As long as we're still aiming for 1.2mm or .048", I am all aboard.
