Should I eat it ?

Could someone have purposefully poisoned this cantaloupe and left it there..

Hrrrrmm....

It looks perfectly fine on the outside..

Quite firm, not ripe yet..

I guarantee you it is a muskmelon and not a cantaloupe. No one would leave a $500 melon in a parking lot.

I think melons are relatively bland; and I kind of agree on the fruit salad comment. However; honey dew/cantaloupe melon with some black pepper on top is really good, or water melon with some lime chili powder is pretty damn good as well.

Agreed. I have some in my garden this year. They are small, but they have no perceptible green rind, just the skin and orange flesh. A couple of them were rather flavorless, but most have been perfectly sweet.

They are out of their melon! That's the only reasonable explanation. Melon at the peak of ripeness is where it is at, otherwise it's just OK or bland like what you get from the fruit platters you buy from any supermarket.

The supermarket take their leftover fruits, cut-um-up and make fruit bowls.

But if you buy the canteloupe, give it a wait, it ripens..

Makes a huge difference..

Vine-Ripe is better, but the only real difference is the amount of floral scent, the sweetness is equivalent.

A ripe cantaloupe from the farmers market is amazing, but a lot sold in stores aren't ripe so I can see how people might think they are tasteless or boring.

I think most people are just too much in a hurry

You wouldn't eat a green banana, but with cantaloupe it's less obvious when it's ripen...

A ripe edible fruit smells exactly like a ripe edible fruit.

A cantaloupe with no smell, like any other fruit that does not smell like it should, should be passed by. Some will continue to ripen on the kitchen counter, but some will not.

One exception is a watermelon which seldom seems to have any smell until you cut it.

That's how (by smell) the folks in my family gauge the ripeness of a cantaloupe. Seems to work alright for the most part.
