Title: What Pointing Device Are You Using Now?
Post by: davkol on Tue, 04 March 2014, 17:27:37
There's a similar thread for keyboards (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45475.0), so why not about pointing devices as well?

I'll start:

IBM Track Point L40, in trackball mode of course...

I also use a Kensington Expert Mouse from time to time, and a simple Microsoft Compact Optical mouse for gaming.

Kensington Slimblade on the left(currently moved out of range to make room for my Orbweaver) and a Logitech G602 on a Mionix Ensis 320 pad on my right.

Will probably keep using the G602 until the battery runs out, I should have two more rechargeable ones somewhere, but I can't find them, so until they show up or I can be bothered buying new ones the G602 will stay dead.

Still pondering what to swap to.

On the current setup used to visit this place, the re-done MX500 rules my world but on other machines in the house, down the hallway in bedrooms, office, storeroom and garage it's Mionix Naos 7000, SteelSeries Rival, Roccat Kone Optical, Roccat XTD, Logitech mx1100, MX Revolution, G500S, G400S, G9x (wifey loves it), IE 3.0 and a Microsoft Sidewinder mouse (no kidding).

All of these mice get used but the MX500 gets the most love at this particular moment in time.  IT would seem I'm a Logitech fanatic yet I don't feel like barracking for them in any way on this forum or on any other.

Since I use a Model M with that true-age yellow tint, for a mouse I bought an ancient Microsoft mouse on eBay, and then replaced the insides with those from a brand-new Microsoft Laser Mouse.

Looks old, works new.  Matches the Model M plastic perfectly!  Was way easier to do than I expected.

YES, that's the way to do it.  Re-use the shell for something better and keep on using it.  A shame no company makes shells to accept mouse internals like Razer's, Logitech's and Microsoft mice.  It means you can choose what type of internals to use yourself.

I'm sure some Chinese company would love to start a business selling universal shells to accept almost any internal sensor and switch from other manufacturers.

Did you have to dremel the bottom of the older mouse to fit the new internals?

Potato pics attached.   The potato has poor white balance; both the keyboard plastic and the mouse are much more yellow than they appear in the pictures.

No Dremel was needed.  Apparently the top plastic mold didn't change over a 15-year period.  I just disassembled both, cleaned (but did NOT Retrobrite) the old top shell, and re-assembled.  I could not re-use the old sides or red front tip, so those are new.

I like it.

[edit]
It is also possible I gained a USB cable in the process.  I am not certain of that.

Okay so you've used the original WMO.  I thought you opened up a really old version, of a Microsoft Mouse that used a Mechanical Ball arrangement and removed the internal guts, then replaced it with the WMO internals.  My fault for misinterpreting your description.

Good to see the WMO getting used still  :thumb: .

I've moved my pc into the living room for numerous reasons, so I've had to change over to some wireless devices. Mousing on my belly as I lounge back is sketchy at best, I have found the M570 and T650 ideal for my current setup. Though I find both devices tacky and cheap (yet they were both surprisingly expensive), and the T650's acceleration is disturbingly high.

Sorry, missed this post.

I looked at using a really old IBM or MS mouse external case, but I really couldn't do without the scroll wheel, so this was the oldest I could find that would work for me.

I found that the CM Storm Spawn had a similar feel in my hand to the G9X. I've been stocking up on both since I love both of them. But currently I'm using the Spawn on both my work and home computers.

I'd really like to try a trackball though.

Razer Deathadder 2013 version. I've had 3 DA's... and like 10 Microsoft Intelli 3.0 mice prior to my DA's. Any recommandations for a new mouse? I'm happy with my current one though, so I don't really care - but for all I know there might be a different mouse out there that would fit me better. It's for gaming/internet browsing purposes.

It's hard to recommend something if you just want something that fits you better, since we can't really know what you prefer. You might want to try something radically different, like an Abyssus, a Xornet, or something flat like a Func MS-3.

Are there any mice that's similar to the Deathadder, but with better internals? I need two buttons on the left side, nothing more. That CM Storm Xornet mouse looks interesting. I noticed my current Deathadder is starting to die out, so it's time for an upgrade soon.

Edit: Reading your mega mice write-up. :P Xornet inc.

For my two main PCs:

G700, G13, Wacom Intuos3 (4"x 5"), on the primary PC
G700, Wacom Intuos3 (6"x 8") on the secondary PC

I use Input Director freeware, which lets me use everything but the PowerMate across either PC depending upon the Master/Slave condition.  I know two Wacom tablets is excessive, but when my cats "disappeared" the Grip Pen and I saw how expensive they were to replace (about $50, as is the mouse!), I decided to buy the 4" x 5" so I'd have a spare of everything else.  The sole grip pen is kept carefully out of harm's (cat's) way, as I suspect they knocked the original off the desk and into the trash without my noticing. /sigh

@Bucake: Yep this is correct. Griffin Powermate is a controller and can be programmed for almost any application to do things. I use it for Final Cut Pro and as a volume control.

As for the Apple Keyboard remark, i'm not sure what you mean by this. If it was supposed to be a chirp it really was pretty pathetic.

I know Artisan makes grip tape, not sure about thickness, but their pads get a lot of praise so I'd assume the tape is at least decent.
You can also buy pre-cut pads of grip tape, can't remember the manufacturer of those, but there's a good chance any site that sells mouse feet will also sell something like that.

They're best pressed near the outer edge in the middle, it's not an issue at all. Only the switches could be better.

Zowie FK... but I don't like it. The buttons, including the wheel, have too short travel. Otherwise, it's a good mouse and the shape is quite well thought out... I just don't see any reason to pick it over a modern roccat. Perhaps if I wanted to switch to palm grip, or if the side buttons were usable on both sides at the same time...

Zowie EC2 eVo. I think it's a great mouse, only possible cons in my opinion are the scroll wheel is a tad bit heavy and the glossy finish might not be for everyone.

Glad I moved up to the G502, very similar shape.

I had the Kone for 4 years before deciding to upgrade to the XTD. I love the variable lighting - was awesome when I changed from the red LEDs on the Sidewinder X6 keyboard to the blue LEDs on the Blackbird. A couple of mouse clicks, and presto, all the colours match again :)

Logitech M705.  Had an MX600 (which I prefer over the M705).  I also have a  M570 trackball still in its package.  This is for my main setup at home.

At work, just use a ****ty Dell mouse.  I have a Magic Trackpad that I use with an old MacBook Pro, but I'm not too fond of it.

I also use an old PS/2 Dell optical mouse with a 10 yr old laptop that I'm running Linux.

The one I prefer to use the most is the Steelseries Sensei (not the RAW edition, the original). It lets me have pretty insane sensitivity (about 11k CPI), with an option to have hardware in the mouse reduce that sensitivity when I am making very slow movements. Lets me fly around my dual screen setup without having to worry about precision when trying to only move in small increments.

Do you know that that CPI/DPI is achieved through positive interpolation, which is just about the same concept as upscaling pictures/videos, which means, it's not really as accurate as a native CPI/DPI would be. Kinda like doing this:
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/9219/mw2cb.jpg

PS: But the main difference between CPI (DPI)/Picture or Video Resolution is that higher CPI/DPI doesn't means better, so don't misunderstand the example!

When you try to force a sensor to achieve a higher CPI/DPI, you get a lot more noise, jitter and a much less precise tracking, so, using 11k CPI/DPI is just really (pardon me for the word, but it's necessary) stupid. Here's an example of a 2000 CPI/DPI (AVAGO 3050) sensor working up to 3200 CPI/DPI through interpolation:

You get lots of jitter and anything above 1600 CPI/DPI has a fair amount of mouse prediction to makes things worse.

The max CPI/DPI of the older version of the AVAGO 9500, which is Steelseries Sensei's sensor, is 5700 CPIs/DPIs. Anything above that will contain higher amounts of jitter, smoothing and maybe even input lag and is just not recommendable.

Fair call, this makes sense if it is achieving it through interpolation like you say. Perhaps the Sensei is using some of that fancy gimmicky onboard processor to compensate? I've got other mice that run at around that 5500-6500 DPI range (a Saitek and a Razer) and don't notice any jitter, or lag, whatsoever with the Sensei by comparison.
Thanks for the info though, I didn't really think to investigate the difference between CPI and DPI.

I am currently using a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, the name is longer than the mouse itself. It is our company standard mouse for the laptop users. Although it has decent accuracy and works on lots of surfaces, it is too small. I loved the logitech mouse that came with their Wave keyboard, but I lost the receiver and they don't keep it in their spare parts anymore, so that's a loss.

Now, I was looking for a new mouse and was thinking about the Logitech Performance MX, due to it's programmable buttons and that it works good on different surfaces, but then I saw this thread. A lot mention that they are using a trackball, and now I am intrigued. I like that a trackball stays in place on the desk, it seems to be ergonomical, but how different is the experience?
How is the experience in CAD software (PTC-software mainly)?

Edit: A last question, how good is the logitech M570 for mobile use?

Basically, the dictionary meaning of each one, which doesn't makes any sense at first is:

CPI = Counts per Inch
DPI = Dots per Inch (dots as in the number of pixels on your screen!)

Your mouse sensor always works with Counts Per Inch, but those get translated later into Dots per Inch so that your computer may understand them and move the cursor accordingly.

So, in a 800 CPI mouse, if you move your mouse left for a single Inch the sensor will make 800 Counts, then those will be sent to your computer which will move the cursor 800 Dots (or Pixels if you prefer) towards left on the screen.

In the end, as many say, it's almost the same thing because they both have the same value and one always gets converted into the other, but Counts are related to the sensor, while Dots are related to the screen.

Also, it has no relationship whatsoever with accuracy. A good video that explains some of this, and even more, is this one, from a Logitech's Senior Engineer:

Okay so you've used the original WMO.  I thought you opened up a really old version, of a Microsoft Mouse that used a Mechanical Ball arrangement and removed the internal guts, then replaced it with the WMO internals.  My fault for misinterpreting your description.

Have gone back to the ancient G500 simply because it's scroll-wheel is superior for my own personal usage.

Gave up on the G502 because it really is a small mouse, very thin and delicate like a super model on ice  :p .

The original G500 is still fully functional and does everything you need it to do on the desktop without any fuss and above all else NO installation of Logitech Gaming Software required (still makes Logitech far better than Razer Corp).

Actually am now using the current Avior SK from Mionix.

Brilliant WMO like setup, which I have always liked in the past but have never found a mouse with a decent size for my hand to use.  The original WMO was just too small to ever use comfortably for more than an hour before 'hand-cramp' occurs.

Mionix have just made, in my humble opinion a "Perfect WMO" style of mouse.  The only major piss-off is the side buttons which I NEVER need to use, so having to install their software I then disabled them all.

You can easily lift the Avior SK with it's side buttons because I use them as side grips hence the need to disable them from working  :thumb: .

Why not give the m570 a go? I use mine 90% of the time (don't game much these days). 10% is mouse work in Photoshop.

Anyway, I haven't used a trackball since the late 90s and while I've considered getting a CST2545W-5W I don't know if I'll like the wrist angle in use.

Great mouse, seems to be of high quality. All the buttons and the scroll wheel feels very nice. The shape is somewhat questionable at the moment, but that's because I'm used to mice like IE 3.0, DA, and EC2 eVo. Still, I think this is a keeper.

Since you're doing the rounds with the greater manufacturer's here when will you get an official Compaq rodent to test out?

I'm currently using Logitech Wireless Performance Mouse MX (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Performance-Mouse-Mac/dp/B002HWRJBM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1409610970&sr=1-2&keywords=logitech+mouse). I'm a big fan. It's quite comfortable, molded to the natural "fall" of your hand. It tracks really well, and it has a great button toggle for free wheel "hyper fast" scroll, and staggered conventional step scrolling. The battery life is pretty solid, and the proprietary wireless connection is much more reliable than bluetooth, and no noticeable wake delay. I highly recommend it.

While I really love how the AVAGO 3090 sensor has been pushed to its limits with a new MCU, I really don't like any MS 3.0 shaped mice... It's strange, I know, but I really prefer mice that are focused on claw/fingertip grips, like the Corsair M40 (my favorite), the Logitech G9x (my second favorite) and the Roccat SAVU.

Dell M-UVDEL1. It's the OEM ambidextrous mouse with silver buttons and dark blue shell that came with Dell OptiPlex desktops for years. Made by Logitech, it's well built. If you look inside, there's a 15g piece of metal screwed to the top shell; unscrew it and voila! the mouse is suddenly 5g lighter than WMO (which weighs about 75 g). My only complaint is that the sensor sucks (400 cpi + acceleration; prediction on par with A3050).

Now, compare that to Zowie FK, for example. Long story short, Zowie wants you to pay €50 premium for better tracking, ****ty coating and customer "service" (http://www.reddit.com/r/MouseReview/comments/2f3mb1/zowie_customer_service_is_abysmal_even_with_a/). Pathetic.

have you tried the logitech g100s?
it also has the metal piece in the top shell, and is about 60something grams after it is removed. no acceleration, no prediction, very responsive, omron switches etc. 500-1000-2000 dpi etc.
small and not too dissimilar to your Dell mouse.

I haven't, because it's supposedly based on the same design as Zowie MiCO, i.e. Logitech Mini Optical Mouse. I own that one, but seem to prefer a slightly different shape most of the time—Roccat Lua. Although, I'll probably test the logitech, if a good deal appears.

The dell has appeared on my desk by accident; my parents wanted to throw it away for no apparent reason, together with a few horrible Genius mice and a Logitech LX3, which I love. I gave it a try after years, because it doesn't hurt to change grips every now and then.

Always change mice so that your hand doesn't become too dependent upon one type of mouse.  Plus its good to change so that your fingers/hand becomes acclimatized to various setups and you can easily change your preferences.  The key to survival in this world is to be flexible and adapt to any situation.

Don't become a loser that specializes with only using ONE type of mouse and refuses to change their method of working, you need to use various input devices that are available in this world.  Besides the mouse is the absolute cheapest device when it comes to building a PC from scratch, so there is no excuse to not getting several to use and swap around.

At work I use the glorious Logitech G400 next to my Model M.
Attached to my gaming PC is the oft-underrated Logitech G9x (Call of Duty edition). I set the LEDs to match the chartreuse green of the lights on my Hi-Tek RT-101.
Accompanying the Motias Tactile Pro on my 2006 iMac is the handsome Logitech M500.
Next to my backup gaming rig resides the Ms Sidewinder X5 (meh). I'll be replacing it someday for something a little more gainly and tactile.
Last but not least, my ol' lass uses the classic Logitech MX518.
Miscellaneous mice include: Apple Magic Mouse, Ms Intellimouse (ball), Logitech 3-button (ball).

Sorry for the long-winded story; I'm passionate about my mouses :)

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Logitech G5. It used to be my favourite mouse (and probably still is) until it kicked the bucket several years ago. I cried.

It still is at my place.  Have a working G5 connected up to a PC for over 6 years now, only downside it's old style scroll wheel is a pisser, because I am firmly addicted to the G500 with it's free-scrolling wheel, the best invention by Logitech ever.  Pity they don't apply it on every mouse or that any other manufacturer can make it for their own devices  ::) .

for most of us really picky users, the G5 isn't a good mouse due to its sensor. it has a bit of built-in somewhat random acceleration which makes it very inconsistent for fast FPS games.
I think the RAT is generally disliked due to its build quality, but I can't say as I've not owned one.

So true but the G5 isn't used in gaming at all.  I am mostly an internet user by far with little to no gaming required in my usage.  Hence laser and/or optical sensors have no exacting requirements for net usage.

Currently have set up another PC with my old favourite the G700 which after all these years still works nicely with a single Eneloop batt.  I'm still a Logitech lover despite my hatred of them, you have to despise the ones you love because it's a natural tendency among humans everywhere  ;) .

I love the free-scroll feature (except for the G9x, which can be a tad fidgety). I keep my M500 on permanent free-scroll. My lass primarily used the G5 when it was still alive and she tends to go through mice faster than most folks (heavy fingers, I suppose).

I'm back to the current gen Roccat Kone XTD. I had the original one, the Roccat Kone [ + ] and they have always been one of the most comfortable mice I have ever used.
The first one was used until the left mouse button stopped clicking and the second one ran into the infamous scroll wheel bug.
Went a step down to the Roccat Kova [ + ] but it was just slightly too small for my hands. Still going strong though.

As I have fairly large hands (long fingers) the Kone just fits. That and it looks badass.

I am currently using a Naga Epic.  I am not a huge fan of razor but going off looks alone the side buttons looked easier to reach all of them than on the Logitech version.  I use it in wired mode with the battery installed for extra weight.  I do actually use all the side buttons on my raiding rogue in WoW.  Coupled with my orbweaver I don't have to point and click any ability when in combat while circle strafing and using push to talk for voice chat.

Yup. It's not flawless though, the range is a bit on the short side (3 meters) and I really don't like its scroll encoder, but yeah, it's surely the best wireless mouse ever made up to date.

There's a similar thread for keyboards (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45475.0), so why not about pointing devices as well?

I'll start:
  • CH Products DT225 (USB) and Kensington SlimBlade trackballs at one setup (slimblade for scrolling and fast movements, DT225 for accuracy and wonderful Japanese omrons)
  • bare Logitech G9x at the other one
LUGULAKE Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse, Wired, Right Hand - feells to me much more ergonomic than regular mice (I had many) and is amazingly inexpensive, while highly rated. Just checked Amazon for its proper name and find out that it's on sale today for just $9.99. I have purchased this mouse and the Anker® CE100 Ergonomic Optical USB Wired Vertical Mouse 1000 / 1600 DPI, 5 Buttons for $13.99 so I could compare them and returned the latter, even though it looks rather cool, better than the LUGULAKE in my opinion, but functioned much worse.

Yeah it is...

I want a logitech g702s.   They need to hurry up and release one.

If they do so, it needs a few changes from the G700S:

1. Needs to weight a little bit less (at least 20 grams).
2. Battery needs to last at least 5x more. For god's sake, make it use one of those "new" miraculous batteries we all see on the news every god damn week and never on our peripherals, they may even charge us more for that (see how much the R.A.T 7 and the Mamba cost and people still buy them?).

But PLEASE, don't make us have to recharge it every 2-3 days.

The 602s has amazing battery life and the 502 proteus has all the bells and whistles.   It wouldn't take a lot of effort for them to release a wireless gaming/productivity mouse that fit the 700 slot.

I'd buy it, as long as it had the sensor of the G402s :)

The G602 already uses a modification of the AVAGO AM010 sensor (which is G402's sensor), so, you're already doing that  :p

I'm using a Zowie FK with the guts of the FK1.

nice. I like that idea. wonder if I can fit FK1 internals in an EC2 eVo...
You might be able to make it work with some modding, but it's not a simple swap like the FK/FK1/AM (all you need to do is unscrew/screw things in with those).

I've using a pen tablet for several years now. Right now, since I use two monitors and I do not use the full surface of the tablet (I map a part of it to the monitors), I am using a small Wacom Bamboo, but mainly I use Intuos at work. Since I feel very slow with the mouse since several years ago, I've played games like 'Quake 3' and 'Call of Duty 4' using the pen (on 'mouse' or 'relative' mode; otherwise it does not work properly). And surprisingly I was not worse than when I used to use a mouse. Not having to drag the bottom of the mouse around made me feel lighter and with faster moves.

If you want to have a weird (and maybe life changing!) experience, try it out!

Yup, that's why even with a lower refresh rate than other gaming mice and even some stability problems (which almost every wireless mouse has as well), it feels better than any other wireless mouse ever made. It's an IR Optical sensor, if you want to see the LED, just use your cellphone camera and look at it through it (after moving the mouse).

There's others wireless optical gaming mouse as well, such as the A4Tech Bloody R8A, which uses an AVAGO 3050, but honestly, its tracking really isn't that good and A4Tech decided to "increase" the maximum DPI up to 3200 through interpolation.

That's some heavy jitter right there above 1600 DPI, but that's what happens when you try to exceed the maximum DPI a sensor was designed for (anything above 2000).

There's also a little bit of it at 400 DPIs, since that's not a native DPI step.

Anyways, sure the G602 has a couple of flaws, but it's without any doubt the best wireless gaming mouse made up to date. Try to give it a try at gaming, you might even get surprised.

CM Storm Alcor. It's a lovely piece of hardware, but the firmware/configuration could be much better. In particular, there's no polling rate option between 1 kHz and 125 Hz, I'd love to have closer dpi steps (like 800/1000/1600/2000, if possible), lights are an abomination, and the flashing tool obviously doesn't work outside MS Windows.

2.2.1 is what I'm going to use, as soon as I manage to restore a WinY2K8 VM, but it bothers me that (1) the 1600 dpi setting has the blue light on (and I don't want to void the warranty straight away by desoldering the backlighting), (2) there's no step between 800 and 1600 dpi (it should be technically possible, right?), (3) 500Hz polling rate isn't supported (okay, maybe they did some magic and avoided jitter at 2000 dpi; I'm surprised that I don't notice any jitter at 1600 dpi with the 1.2.0 firmware, but 3200 dpi is already bad).

The AVAGO 3090 has a very limited number of preset DPI steps and you can't really choose anything in between without using interpolation (and somehow my spidey senses tell me that 400 and 2000 are not native DPI steps, rather they're 800 and 4000 DPIs cleanly divided by two).

I'd say that if you want something even better, it'd be nice to wait for the CM Storm Alcor+ (Alcor with a AVAGO/Pixart PMW 3310 sensor and Mizar's body), but god knows when that thing is going to release... :(

Zowie disagree with their completely different steps. ~_^

I'll just keep waiting for a good deal on Kone Pure Military, and maybe try to reverse engineer the firmware to get rid of the backlighting, if nothing else.

Logitech G502 Proteus Core.  Second (maybe 3rd) best mouse I've ever used.  Logitech G500 is the best mouse ever imo.  followed by either the MX revolution (RIP)  or the 502.  I can't live without the extra buttons left and right on the scroll wheel.  Double edged sword because that gives me a very narrow selection of mice to choose from but luckily logitech makes great mice.

Currently at work though I'm using a Razer Lachasis until I can fix my G500.

I don't know if this would count as mine don't point  :)) . I actually been using an Apple Trackpad for 5 years now. I really like this for general computer stuff such as surfing the internet and word processing. For gaming I do switch to a regular small logitech mouse cause I find it more easy for gaming. I really like it due to it's customizable gesture nature. I can three swipes or two swipe in a certain direction to process almost any kind of command I set it to. Really useful.

Mionix avior 7000. had a few issues but solved and went away.
Looking for a mousepad, not sure if i should buy another qck.
I recommend the avior!

How is the Rival? I've seen the razer taipan, my avior, the rival, and the fk1. Was stuck on the avior and rival because:
razer: razer. tis all I need to say.
fk1: heard it's plagued with issues. scroll wheel to hard sidebuttons to sensor, who knows.

Rival has questionable build quality, and straight up bad material choices. the rubber wears off in a few months. you'll notice your hands being covered in rubber after gaming on it for a while :p
it's also really heavy and grips very differently from the Avior.

I wouldn't recommend a QcK when there are so many better options out there - but it really depends on your preferences. if you could describe a little how you would like your mouse to glide...

Sure, as far as I know, there's the CM Storm Alcor+ (with side-grips and Pixart PMW 3310 sensor) and a mouse that looks just about the same as the Steelseries Sensei coming up (you could say it's a better version of the Recon), but there may be others I do not know.

Anyways, now that I finished reviewing both CM Storm gaming combos, I can go back to reviewing mice that are actually interesting and good, such as this lil' thing I got from a modder friend:

It's a replica of the extremely rare "Razer Cypher Deathadder":

According to Razer itself, only 15 of these were produced, but finding one is almost impossible. And the most interesting thing is, Cypher himself does not uses this mouse nor any Deathadder.

The replica in question is actually quite nice, I had a Deathadder a few years ago and this one surely isn't worse than it, since there is a Deathadder 3.5G inside of it (though the original version used 3G internals).

I'm definitely the odd duck then, I think it's damn near perfect. I'd absolutely love a mouse with it's shape and standard forward/back buttons.

But then again, I absolutely love Wingman-inspired shapes. I still have one of these bad boys:

I'm trying out the G302 from Logitech right now. strangely very natural to grip for me, despite having the oddest shape that looks nothing like any ergonomic mouse out there.
so far, it is making me question what I've been looking for as a grip in a mouse before :p
it's a bit narrow in the front, which is fine, but you should definitely try it out before using it.

buttons are great, scroll wheel is alright.
can't comment much from a sensor performance perspective yet. I don't have my proper gear available, and using a very ****ty slow laggy monitor for the time being. but it should perform similarly to the G100s, which is good.

You know whats funny? I went out found a 1010 on amazon for $25 shipped.  I ended up buying it knowing that it wouldn't live up to replace my fps mouse.  I actually love the damn little thing, I just wish the mouse hertz could at least hit 500hz instead of the 315hz it keeps hitting.  I know the 2020 is actually somewhat usable for desktop and rts duty.  They all hit $100+ and I just can't justify that.  I'm thinking about opening her up and seeing if I can swap in the guts from a Zowie MiCO.  CM Storm Xornet is on the way though, maybe that will satisfy me.

The 1010 was a phenomenal mouse, except the mouse buttons were complete rubbish. If you do end up replacing the internals, I'd strongly suggest swapping out the switches for some Omrons or something similarly high quality.

On CST's website they are hinting (https://twitter.com/CST_USA/status/535178545765814272) about an upgraded PCB/Laser for the L-Trac.  Do you know anything about this?

No but there are a few things they could change to make it better like more dpi options and the ability to change polling rate. But other than that I don't see much they could improve. Maybe accuracy?

We are planning on just releasing the info on the new PCB on our website probably in the next few days.

We are currently selling the new ones now but getting one depends on where you buy the L-Trac from and whether they have bought L-Trac's from us in the past few weeks or not, I suggest asking the seller and maybe requesting one. You will be able to tell if the trackball has the new PCB by the "R2" next to the Model # on the label on the bottom of the trackball, all L-Trac's with the new PCB have the "R2". Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Newly Designed PCB and Upgraded Laser Sensor Details

Our Newly Designed PCB and Upgraded Laser Sensor offers the same level of reliability and control that L-Trac users have come to expect over the years. All the same individual L-Trac models will continue to be available and they will all have the new PCB and Laser Sensor. All L-Trac models will continue to offer the same CPI (800, 1600, 400) which is still the highest of any trackball available today. New features are also available and include:

- Field Programmability
- Improved Precision Tracking
- The ability to change out the solid black ball for any other colored 2.25” ball (the same size as a regulation billiard ball). (Note: under standard operation any colored ball will work but the solid black ball has the best performance)

The new L-Trac's are Available Now, to see if you have one simply check the label on the bottom of the trackball and if there is an “R2” next to the model number then you have an L-Trac with the New PCB and Laser Sensor.

BTW, the new Naga 2014 surprised me a lot. All of the flaws I had mentioned on my previous Naga review (Naga Molten) were fixed, plus there are many enhancements on build quality as well. Better plastic, better internals, better coating, and surprisingly, the new Philips Twin Eye PLN 2034 is not only a good sensor (unlike the previous ones), but it may as well be the best laser sensor ever used on a mouse, the LOD is just insane when properly adjusted, there's no Z-Axis problems, no durability problems, no tracking problems, doesn't seems to have Dynamic DPI Scaling as far as I've seen..

It's nice that they fixed the Naga. I wonder if they made internal quality improvements on the DA Chroma from the DA 2013. I seem to remember people complaining about the clicks wearing down quickly.

Razer Naga 2014. It was an opened unit on Amazon for dirt cheap so I took a chance because I liked the feel at Best Buy, got a unit that looked like someone literally took it out of the box, looked at the buttons, say 'WTF is this crap' and put it back in the package and sent it back. Works great and I really don't know how I lived without this thing.

How is it? The 100g weight is really tempting.

It's nice, but I can't say for sure it's really one of the best mice I've used, the ergonomics, especially on the right side of the mouse are weird, plus the sensor on my unit seems to be faulty (either that or the software screwed my unit), because it randomly makes 360 degree turns out of nowhere. Maybe it's a curse related to having the same sensor as the Deathadder 2013?

I could bash on it for being faulty, but it's not my first time finding a mice like that, CM sent me a prototype a few months ago and it had the same problem as well... I think this sort of thing is bound to happen on a few units anyway, plus dealing with the warranty is quite easy for me.

The software was completely remade and is a lot better and VERY powerful, but the GUI is a very complicated mess, if you don't use many of the features of mice software, this one will be part of your worst nightmares.

AMAZON won't deal with any payments other than CREDIT CARDS on their own dodgey website.  If they offered Paypal then it would be nice because NO ONE in the known universe will ever know my credit card details.

Over too many years retailers lose your credit details to smart hackers, yet they never disclose the break in and loss of this data.  Hence I only find out when some scumbag in Venezuela is paying for porn sites in America and sending me the bills  >:D .

Since using Paypal, have never again received any more 'suspect' payments out of my accounts without me knowing about it  :thumb: .

which result to be, by far, the best portable mouse i ever used so far, track on almost every surfaces and the two AA battery last long time and give the mouse a heavyweight which I prefer.

Big fan of the Kone series aswell...

I'm using a Pure Optical as a successor to my OG Kone + that I used as my daily driver for almost 5 years.
(Kone + still works flawless except for the 'sideways mouse wheel buttons')

Also have a Kone XTD from before they were available as optical flying arround, and another Pure Optical as backup.
I prefer the slightly smaller 90% size of the Pure (for my style of claw grip) as well tho and also believe in optical sensors.

I've been using these two on the last few days:

The Abyssus 2014 looks and feels exactly like a toy, although it does actually seems to perform quite well. I have mixed feelings about it, while it's not really worth the value and the Razer Synape is indeed a pain in the ass, it's impossible for me to deny that some people may like it.

And that Razer "Cypher" Deathadder replica is quite well made, there's a very nice attention to detail and the build quality is good enough to make people think that that's actually the real deal.

I really like it so far, it's not tall and is a perfect shape for my fingertip-grip. Today I picked up a Logitech G302 Daedalus Prime (http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/moba-gaming-mouse-g302).

I really like it so far, it's not tall and is a perfect shape for my fingertip-grip. I don't really play MOBAs besides HoTS, but I was looking for a nice optical mouse that wasn't too big and had good customer support behind it. I've never had any issues with Logitech so naturally I decided to pick it up. :thumb:

I heard there's a G303 coming out soon.

Looks like it was released about a week ago (WEEK AGO!). It's the same mouse but with an upgraded sensor and RGB lighting. I'll return mine's today and pick that one up instead. Though I will have to purchase it online from their store since it doesn't look like it's in B&M shops yet.

Good looking out. :thumb:

Trust me you won't ever find another G9x being made by Logitech now.

The G303 is exactly the same as the G302 just with a 3366 sensor, hence enjoy the miserable shape of their latest Star Wars mouse from that evil empire  >:D .

Looks pretty usable imo, Used to small mice and apparently the clicks are amazing. I'm more concerned about the inwards angled sides than the spaceship-yness of it. I still have an extra NIB g9x in-case the current one decides to crapout.

It's more or less the same mouse as the G300 I had three years ago, "only" with updated components. The shape is certainly interesting and feels great, if you grip it as intended by the designers, but I always had trouble avoiding the extra side buttons on top, although my fingers have never been even close to ogrish.

I'm happy that my two g9x's are still functioning here... I kinda want to try G502 though, but it seems kinda, I don't know, long? G9x was just perfect - we should petition Logitech to revive this form factor mouse with modern innards!

The G302 just like the G303 is just horrible to hold for more than 30 minutes at a time.

The G9x can be held in your hands for hours without cramps developing, hence in the end it will come down to pure human ergonomics because the current crap coming out of Logitech, is extremely bad for mouse users in general  >:( .

Logitech M570, because my TrackMan Marble has just started double clicking about one third of the time (after 3 years of occasional use and carrying around) and I'm too lazy to fix/replace the switch in the summer heat.

The sad part is that M570 buttons and wheel feel awful, although it costs twice as much.

I currently use a deathadder 2013 after upgrading from the previous version (whatever that was called) when the scroll wheel became strangely mushy.

Considering upgrading to an FK1 when I get some spare cash though.

I fully recommend Zowie products.

If you really liked the Deathadder shape, I can recommend EC2-A as well, but FK1 to me is still a perfect mouse. They're basically the same mice with slightly different clicks and shapes.

Roccat Tyon

Tracking is kinda off and lifting the mouse results in a mess, the extra buttons are mostly weird, but it's still a modern roccat (read: decent build quality, great GNU/Linux drivers).

TRUE, Zowie is the ONLY company listening to gamers these days, they make solid input devices for any sized hand in the world so you have to thank them for that.

First off the G302/303 isn't anything like the G9 (FACT), also the Corsair M45 is considerably larger than the humble G9 (FACT), so that only leaves the Storm Spawn which is slightly smaller than the G9.

If you love the G9 simply too much then stay with it because none of the current manufacturers have released anything like the G9 shape just yet.

Haha, have to agree with you there. Just going off of my own experience having owned those.

Nothing quite exactly like it obviously as the G9's shell had a unique feel. I can certainly recommend Spawn as I love that mouse, but I didn't really enjoy G303 as much.

CM Storm QFR with Frosty Flake, running Easy AVR USB Firmware: one layer has mouse actions on the home row. And still Roccat Lua on one side, Kensington SlimBlade trackball on the other one.

I usually only briefly touch the trackball to switch windows (focus follows cursor) or use it to scroll a bit. Mouse buttons on the keyboard are great for wheel-click copypasta (in X.Org) and spamming the cookie in Cookie Clicker. Finally, the mouse is for everything else, which isn't much in actuality.

Right. The glossy version's got a more tacky feeling than the matte black (especially when you clean it, because it does accumulate some fingerprints and I need to clean it once in a while).
Myself, I don't think I have very oily hands, but very dry hands. I found the rubberized surface too slippery for me to hold actually.
I think the black version might be better for you.

The gack that came out of this thing could've filled a thimble! No wonder the wheel and sensitivity buttons were unresponsive  Anyway, the mouse was definitely worth the price tag.

Does anyone know of a good method for cleaning the soft rubber parts of a mouse without turning them sticky? I've tried gently wiping with 90% isopropyl alcohol, water-dampened cloth, and Formula 409 to mixed results.

I was going to get a Func the next time my mouse died (my second Razer DeathAdder) and totally forgot last year when it did. So currently running the Ouroboros. Like all things Razer, build quality is hit or miss. Mine is creaky, but it works great. Has prediction unfortunately, but I don't find it nearly as bad as the DeathAdder's prediction before Razer disabled Drift Control.

Think I'm going to go back to a Wacom for when I need fine control. Just recently purchased a small one for the kid, and now I'm missing having that kind of functionality...

I have not been following this thread but I do have a nagging question for Mac users. Do you guys use the Magic Trackpad that connects to the Mac via Bluetooth? I have one which connect to the MacBook Air but I find that it has very slight lag. The built in Trackpad on the Air responded much better than the wireless Magic Trackpad. That annoys me to no end because it means I can't use my HHKB with the Air if the Magic Trackpad is not as good.

What alternatives do I have? How is Magic Mouse? I really like the gestures of a trackpad so I am not sure I'd like a mouse as replacement.

I had really bad RSI in my right wrist for a long time despite loads of changes to my desk/workstation (at home and at the office) and it more or less went when I started using it. Before that I was using an Evoluent Vertical mouse which helped a little but would still lead to wrist pains every now and then. I've got a Zowie FK1 I think at home, it's pretty good, not as comfortable as my old CM Spawn but performs much better. I don't get to game much these days anyway so it's largely irrelevant.

still using microsoft wom ...
I do keep one of these on my desk for the odd occasion I do need a different mouse (or when someone uses my desk). I swapped the left/right click for some Cherry microswitches I pulled from a G80-11900 which feel much nicer than the stock WMO switches (waaaay heavier though). I need to do something with the middle click as well but that's a little harder to replace as all the microswitch I can find don't fit.

Just received a second hand Logitech Marble. It's my first fingerball, my other two being a Logitech M570 and Trackman Wheel. It's really quite different, new and fun. I can't say that I like it more than the thumbball, but it's a nice experience. Really quite smooth compared to the others.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on a Zowie FK-1, because I can't find any for much below $100 :(

Still worth it? Any Aussies know where I could potentially find a better price?

Personally, I would say yes. I've currently got a Zowie AM, Intellimouse 3.0, SteelSeries Sensei, and a Logitech G5 just sitting, all of which have been replaced by the FK1. It's been the only mouse I've been able to stick with since the Sensei. The build quality is fantastic, it fits my hand and grip perfectly. I really have no complaints about it.

The Ducky Secret looks good. And it's going to be cheap too, only 40GBP.

Hold the button underneath and scroll the wheel to change the colour which is nice and simple. It looks like it has a rubberized coating on the outside but it doesn't. It feels quite nice. Potato pics incoming.

Another weird rodent by the name of the "Cougar 550M" is quite nice.

Has a similar style to the (in)famous DA series but has a rather good quality casing.  Has no sticky rubber coating at all it's plain ABS with textured sides which is nice when you have every other manufacturer spraying and applying top coats that wear away from the body over time.

Not too heavy for me but I'm not the average limp-wristed Geekhacker hence for me personally the weight is okay for everyday usage.  The driver you download off their website automatically up dates your firmware so you can't avoid not to have the latest version installed (some might cry foul over that).

Overall it's really not bad because you can switch off all the leds so it stays quiet without attracting any attention.  I know you can get either a Grey or Blue Coloured Model but I have instead received a completely Black Coloured casing which is rather good in matching my Hiro pad  :thumb: .

I think I paid around $59.00AUD for it some months ago but have decided to try it out recently because it's time to test out various input devices instead of leaving them in their retail boxes.

Currently using an Intellimouse 1.1 at work, and a Zowie FK-1 at home. I love both of these mice. I wish I found the Intellimouse 3.0 more comfortable, but I feel it's a tad too big to be really comfortable.

Ignoring that the left click button no longer 'clicks' and is silent. I also made the LED that glows different colors inside painted black (so the glow is only red).

I will definitely get a transparent mouse again in the future! I like it very much.

I'm gonna get a lot of crap for this, but I really like the cheap-ass Dell mouse that I have at my work.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=corp&sku=330-9456

I've been using literally this same exact one for about 3 years and it's always really reliable, fits right in my hand, scrolls well, tracks well (I do a lot of Illustrator and Photoshop stuff), and I like how light and easy to move around it is.

In the time that I've had it, I've had two different much more expensive Logitech mice die at home -- one of them just started registering double-clicks instead of single-clicks, which was of course a disaster. I ended up buying another one of these cheap-ass Dells (for like $10 on Amazon, I think), and it's been working great ever since. I also have a Magic Trackpad, which is nice for gestures, but very tiring (for me anyway) if I use it for very long at all.

Believe me, I'm as baffled as anyone else. This mouse should be terrible, but it's totally not.

I got it working to a point where it was somewhat usable. With acceleration I could move a cursor across my 13" screen in only a couple of swipes. Plus when rolling slow I was still be able to aim at buttons.

Unfortunately, diagonal movement is awful with this set-up.

The ball rests on four rollers. When they spin, they drive hall-effect sensors for up, down, left and right directions. The ball resists rolling against two rollers at once. It prefers one axis rather than a diagonal movement. I tried a couple similar parts to make it work (including gutting a mighty mouse for its scroll ball). Nothing seemed to work well enough.

All this work makes me need a programmable mouse so my new project is a boring thumbball.

Quick question. What is the point of adding a colon to the search? I've never used that to search for something in my 28 years of existence, unless it was part of what I was searching for, of course.

I used a gen. 1 Death Adder for years.  I liked the feel and functionality (except when Razer Synapse would log me out at random times).  The mouse of course got grimy after a while no matter how many times I cleaned it, so I recently replaced it with a Sensei Raw.  I'm liking the Steelseries software more than Razer's, but I shouldn't have gone with a symmetrical mouse (I probably should have gone with the Rival).  I'm missing the ergonomics that I used to have so I'm going to try a Mionix Naos 7000.

Just last week i realized i could run it at full 16400dpi, set it to 1000mhz polling rate, and lowered the speed so i could use it, and its way better now. I haven't configured any macros on the side buttons yet so no clue how well that works.

in front of the keyboard: Contour Rollermouse Free2
right hand: Mionix Castor or Elecom XT2

Each is somehow imperfect.

Avior's side buttons rattle a little bit. The shell is "flat" ambidextrous, thus there's a bit too much hand pronation at times (thus multiple pointing devices). Configuration options are underwhelming, hence I've only swapped left/right button actions… I miss Roccat's EasyShift. Luckily, I finally have a Kova Pure in the mail (after my previous attempts at buying it failed, due to being out of stock or the vendor messing up).

Castor is alright for the most part (as a "dumb" mouse), except its coating somehow feels gross, when I'm a bit sweaty. I wonder why my Kone Pure [Military/Color] sits in the closet…

At last but not least, the rollermouse. Free2 feels flimsier than the old Pro, but about everything else is better. Except the default button mapping is completely stupid, and can't be changed without proprietary drivers for proprietary OS'. The middle large button serves as "left doubleclick" instead of "wheel click", and while the new wide wheel is pretty good, its lack of tactility while scrolling leads to accidental scrolling, when attempting to click instead. Left-/right-handed orientation can't be swapped with a DIP switch or something. And Copy/Paste buttons, that send Ctrl-C/V? Seriously? O_o Yeah, and calibration for a triple-screen setup is weird.

left-handed DA because my RSI (right arm) kicked in again :(
for right, i use the logitech G400.

i have a zowie FK2 as well, but the small mouse cramps my hands. unfortunately the DA is too big for my liking. and i'm not really a fan of the G400 shape either.. :D
(man, life is rough!)

I love the shape of the G400 and the rest of the Logitech G series around that time (G5, MX510, MX518, etc). Although, I haven't tried very many mouses beyond the Logitech, Microsoft, and cheapo Dell brands.

That sucks about your RSI. I hope you don't have raver's wrist!
Raver’s Wrist: A postmodern repetitive stress injury caused by repeated rotation of the hands for many hours—e.g., while holding glow sticks during a rave.

I'm getting curious about another sensors... you know... gear acquisition syndrome.

I wanna try the Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum. But it's so ugly! Why hasn't the sensor already been put in other mice? It's been long enough now!

back to the wired g403 for now!
for my needs it's probably the best mouse out there, quality-wise. there are a bunch more fantastic mice, but those mice have features i have no need for (wireless, extra buttons, free scroll wheel, etc), and these features just end up getting in the way of my use.

it's weird to grab another mouse just to immediately feel this step down in build quality: mushy-feeling clicks, slippery texture, lousy scroll wheel, stiff cable, high weight, etc.
unfortunately the shape of the g403 is not that great for me, so i'll probably switch to something else (again) when i get tired of "making it work".

My only (somewhat nitpicky) complaints are that

Otherwise, it's as good as expected ("titan" wheel, remapping, assembly, tracking) or even better: the configuration UI in GNU/Linux drivers appears more organized (finally) and the top side buttons are fantastic (I use them for Page Up/Down or Home/End w/ EasyShift).

Mostly a Razor Naga Epic “gaming mouse”, and if/when my hand starts hurting from too much mousing around I switch to a Kensington Expert Mouse (an Apple Magic Trackpad used to be my backup device, but I accidentally left the batteries in it too long and they leaked on something important).

FWIW, I wish I’d gotten the Logitech equivalent to the Naga because its software is craptastic on my system, but the software for my G13 works mostly kinda fineish (they both have issues, but Logitech’s bugs don’t bite me as hard or as often... YMMV).

(Having to deal with driver bugs is part of why I decided to build my keyboard... open-source firmware means that if I come across a bug that the vendor isn’t fixing quickly enough, I can do it myself.)

EVGA TORQ x5 (Avago/Pixart 3988 sensor). Since EVGA included mouse feet in the package I had an excuse to open the mouse up. Harvested a nice B F Goodrich-like scroll wheel from a retired ball mouse. Knew that would come in handy one day. No more scrolling on a flat tire :))

Looks like an Alps clone encoder but I could be wrong about that. Left hand for Linux and right hand for Windows/Gaming. Perhaps a prelude to Zowie's FK1.

Just got a Contour Perfit mouse (https://www.contourdesign.com/product/contour-mouse/).

The shape is weird, but other than that… finally a mouse with proper three buttons on top! The thumb wheel and tilting back/forward button is alright. Also, the build quality is fairly decent (unlike in some other ergonomic mice—for example, the Humanscale one was particularly shoddy).

There's a left-handed version too…

The left microswitch in my Elecom EX-G has started doubleclicking after barely 1.5 years as my secondary pointing device (used only with the laptop). Until I fix it, I'm kind of stuck with Logitech TrackMan Marble (microswitches already replaced) that I'm too lazy to configure properly though.

It's funny, because I have a heap of various decent mice at home, but I can't be arsed to carry a mousepad around and hate using a mouse without any decent mousepad.

I have a two devices: a Logitech M570 and a Logitech G102.
The M570 is my jack of all trades, i have it for as long as 3 years, i use it on my desk at home, i take it to work every morning, i use it on my couch at home, on the go with laptop, where i go, i take it with me. Its so used in fact, i had to change the click buttons once and the ball twice! I'm considering leaving it at work and buying a new Elecom HUGE for home.
The G102 is just the gaming *****, it can take my bangs pretty well, its very light and has a great sensor.

The new Gx03 line-up appears to be more of a complete redesign than an incremental update. I haven't really checked, but G403, G603 and G703 look like the exact same mouse only with different internal features (mainly wireless). OTOH, the old G700(s) had a very different shape (closer to MX Performance), though, and so did G602 (not to mention G600) with more thumb buttons.

The 403 603 703 are all descendants of the original MX500 shape..  it really just removed the lower left wing under the thumb

603 has the latest hero sensor. it's super efficient while maintaining 1000hz. 10x the power efficiency of pixart 3366 sensor.

They're going to update the m0ar buttons line eventually.

But the improvement of the 603 hero sensor is too large to ignore, even at the reductions of a few buttons..

Because we're looking at the market as it is NOW,  and dat sensor.. super awesome..

No sensor improvement matters, if it isn't noticeable.

Steam Controller ^_^

It works quite well with the SC Controller software on GNU/Linux desktop.

Okay, right now I'm typing, though, and not gripping the controller; I have a CST L-Trac next to the keyboard.

Before that, I used the built in pointing devices in my thinkpad, i.e., a genuine trackpoint and a T450 trackpad, or a Mionix Avior SK in the office (I've also bought another Roccat Kova 2016 to enjoy EasyShift both at home and in the office).

What is the difference between 33xx and Hero? The mouse with 33XX has much better specs. The Hero is a game changer though? What is so special about Hero?

TP, do you use a mouse or trackball? Since I think you know this stuff it shall validate or discredit what I use.
I do think you mentioned a couple of days ago as I agree that trackballs simply do not have the performance of say G903.

Is there a hack to bring G903 to 3389? Not that I need it. There is no way I would use other than Logitech even if others have the 3389 for bragging rights. Certainly not razer. Coolermaster or some such have a 3389 too. Junk. Cannot compare to G903. Which means of course with the new sensor Logitech will be updating it soon. Yet again. I will buy, sucker!

To me L-Track, Slimblade etc is like driving a 10 year old Kia. The G903=Ferrari.

So I'm pretty excited, someone in China developed a straight clone of the G9/G9x with a centered 3360:

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?&id=570009774507

I actually found out about this a few weeks ago but it was no longer for sale and I was really disappointed, but luckily they've decided to do a second batch so I immediately grabbed one.  I've owned a lot of mice over the years and with the precision grip it's still the only mouse that I can go back to and immediately feel comfortable with (other mice I have to get reacquainted with first).

Have you got it already if so any thoughts? and does it come with the different grips? I still have a semi functional g9x that I gave to my GF but would love a new one :)

Guys, the G9x is only desirable because it's elusive,  and the Fanbois/Hipsters cash in on being Outsiders/Unique by (Talking about it)

It's like the Goth kids at school,  it's a matter of carving out a special identity, more so than actual mouse performance.

OVERALL.. There's nothing terribly special about the G9x.

The Gpro, G100s,G203,G302,G303,G305 all have roughly the same profile which match the grip/usage scenarios of the G9x..

And the 3366 is tuned by Logitech, so you know it Wurkz g00d,  whereas the off the shelf 336x versions don't have that verification expertise by our lord/savior François Morier

Apple Trackpad is probably the best for general purpose to me, I've struggled to switch off to Windows/Linux distro due to their lack of seamless experience as the trackpad on macOS.

I also have the Wacom CTH480 which is also very good for handwriting, sketching, and photoshop, but it's far from good as the trackpad in general use. Otherwise, in the worst case, I think Apple has educated me so well on their products.  :-\

For occasional gaming, I have Steelseries rival 100 which is nothing fancy but generally very good.

I can only imagine what libinput (linux touchpad solution) is like with Apple products. I have a hard enough time with libinput and (sans Linux Mint..) Windows based products.

TP4, there is nothing more elusive about the G9x than any other discontinued mouse.  People still talk about it because the shape is unique (all three of them).  The mice you listed do not really feel the same other than in the generic "you can use them for claw/fingertip" sense (the Zowie ZA13 actually feels closer to the G9x precision grip profile I'd say).

Shape is king; 3360 OEMs/knockoffs are fine since the sensor is good out of the box and doesn't require tuning to mitigate flaws like older/lesser sensors do (well, unless you use a high CPI which even logitech couldn't remove the smoothing from).  Obviously logitech will provide better software and have better QC, but unless a company actively adds smoothing or something, a generic 3360 should perform about the same.  To me, shape is king so I'll take a great sensor with shape I love over a slightly greater sensor with shape I find decent.

Also Atlas I just placed the order a couple days ago so it'll be a while before I get it, but I'll give some impressions.  It doesn't come with the shells though, so you'd need to buy some from ebay.

Yes. Those are horrid with how they force out your right fingers to an unnatural grip angle.

I'm currently using my g402 with the Joe Blow ergonomic fix for the "sniper" button. I still rarely use the button, but at least it doesn't irritate the hell out of my thumb now.

At home a Kensington Expert plus whatever gaming mouse I've got going. Had a G903 but the right click lets go unless you press on it real hard, switched to a Deathadder Elite I've got and I've got to appreciate the godlike scrollwheel on the 903 it seriously is the most tactile wheel I've felt.

At work a CST L-Trac and an MX master.

My Logitech G402 refuses to break which is confusing because I can still remember a time when I had to buy a new mouse twice a year because those left buttons always wear out quickly.

Those thumb buttons are confusing though, I keep accidentally pressing them. I surely miss the good old three-button no-wheel Pilot Mouse.

I'm using a G305 at home, which has been nothing short of amazing. Tracks fantastically, and it's light and wireless (using a AAA lithium battery in it.) Hoping to be able to try out a G Pro Wireless to see if I want to make the plunge, but in all honestly, I think the G305 is here to stay since it's cheap to replace and feels great in hand.

I use an MX Master 2S when travelling to clients and at the office. It is FANTASTIC. god, the buttons, scroll wheels, thumb buttons and the integrated button in the thumb rest that also works using directional input + press, this thing is a work setup dream. I tried using trackballs, but weirdly enough, they ended up hurting my wrist when it typically helps other people with wrist pain.

I have switched to Kensington Orbit trackball with scroll ring around a decade ago and it has been serving me well through all these years. The only problem was the left button that would sometimes double register which gets annoying. Probably easy to fix with some contact cleaner, but after 10 years I decided to treat myself with the Slimblade. It is very nice, but to be honest not such a huge upgrade from old trusty Orbit. :)

Man, I had 3 of the OG steelseries sensei, and when they worked they were killer. I loved the heft of the mouse, and the semi-mirror-like sheen finish was really cool, and easy to clean. (Which I did often, with not so damp wipes. I'd get inside the mouse if it ever got really gross as well.

That said, each of mine went out one after another usually taking about a year to completely die.

Had they lasted it would've been the last mouse I ever used. I'm still sad I couldn't get one to last.

Personally of non-trackball mice,

The wired Steelseries sensei I complained about was quite big, and quite heavy which I really liked personally. I just can't say anything nice about their reliability at all.

The best and largest not Steelseries mouse I've ever seen was an old Microsoft Mouse, one of the first optical ones, it was a huge tan monstrosity, and was actually not too bad to use.

Sorry I don't have a model number for that, but I do know that old Microsoft mice last forever and are big.

I do need a scroll wheel, but luckily the first optical mice were Microsoft's Intellimouse brand, which all had that scroll wheel, and the designs of the early ones are essentially identical to some of the later cheap optical mice Microsoft sold, so if we look at this bad lad right here

that's basically Intellimouse 1.0, but made a little bit later at a bargain price.

Okay now someone help me. This thing has 400 DPI. How can I use it and not fly all over my desk when I use the mouse?

EDIT: Ahh, figured it out with some registry edits after setting my current mouse to 400 DPI. This is the way to go!

The Wheel Mouse Optical isn't all that large.  The large MS mouse was the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0:

They make two modern versions:  the Classic Intelimouse (not a great sensor, but suitable for office use) and the Pro Intellimouse (gaming grade).  I think one of them is definitely worth picking up, the IME3.0 shape stands as one of the most comfortable.  Same with the WMO but sadly there isn't a modern version.  You can crank up your windows sensitivity to combat the 400 DPI, but it'll result in pixel skipping.

On topic, I'm currently using the Cooler Master MM710.  Not a perfect mouse but the stubby but wide shape reminds me of one of my favorites, the G9/G9x.  Whenever the Ninox Astrum releases I'll likely switch to that and use the WMO shape since that's one of my favorite shapes.

Using the Razer Viper I got recently. Loving it. I've wanted an ultralight mouse for a while but never really got into the honeycomb aesthetic, and while I'm still not sure whether the lack of holes on the Viper is worth the premium over the Model O or D, it became a no-brainer purchase once I spotted a local retailer selling the Viper at a discount that made it pretty much only $1.50 more expensive than the Model D. Instant buy.

I'm currently using a Logitech MX Master for everyday use, and a Razer Deathadder Elite for gaming.

Lately I've been interested in trying out a trackball though...

If it's just residue from tape Goo Gone should work but if it's that soft coating that gets sticky over time, that's a whole other beast. That requires the hard stuff like WD40 or rubbing alcohol.

I'm using a freebie CyberPower gaming mouse that came with my wife's computer. It's a big hand-ful and nice on the fingers, the feet are as slick as ice, and the scroll wheel feels like heaven! I like it so far. It has gaudy lights on it too  :p

I got myself an old IBM ScrollPoint mouse, with a TrackPoint instead of a scroll wheel.
It's a later model with an optical sensor and a wider knub.

I don't know if the TrackPoint is broken or if it is supposed to be this way... because the scrolling is much too sensitive to be practical.
There doesn't seem to be any way to alter the sensitivity either:  I can find no settings-buttons and there is nothing out of the ordinary with the USB descriptors.

Welp, there goes more of my money. I had no idea those existed and now I must buy one.

EDIT: bought one on eBay.

What other weird IBM peripherals are there?

Using a Glorious Model O Minus in Matte white on the desktop, and an MX Master 2S for my laptop. The Model O-'s lack of weight has really spoiled me though, might get a much lighter wireless mouse for the laptop soon enough

I'm ditching the Elecom Huge trackball. Going to put it up on a classified site today.

Screw waiting for replacement bearings, the overall user experience of this thing is terrible. I've gone back to a $20 wireless Logitech with a noticeably crappy sensor, still better than this Elecom.

I have a logitech m570 trackball in my laptop bag for travel, but use the old wired version at home. i prefer the latter, but they are a bit costly. also, have the old razer deathadder for my extreme GaMiNg DeSkToP for unrivaled performance and an extra RGB FPS boost. seriously though, the deathadder fits perfectly in my hand and the texture is pretty nice as well

I rotate my pointy devices out monthly, so I use my Fnatic Flick G1, Model O, G403 Wireless, DeathAdder BO3 edition, FM Scream 1, and Rival 110.  I still have a few more mice in my collection that I have just retired from rotation.  The Rival 110 has now been passed over to my 5yr old, which I might swap for the CM MM711 due to its size and weight - he has started playing games with me more often other than his usual MineCraft and Roblox (Destiny 2, CoD: MW, Fortnite, CS:GO, CoD: MW2).  I have a hardware addiction and hoarding problem, lol.

Currently I want to get a FM Cape Town, End Game XM1, and the Model D- to add to my collection.

I'm running an MX Master 3 at home for day-to-day, because that electromagnet controlled scroll wheel is just beautiful to use.

Then I've got a Corsair Scimitar Pro for when I play WoW, because buttons.

Kensington SlimBlade. Just got it minutes ago. I'll update in about a week, give it some time to see if I like really it or not but so far, I like it. The scrolling will take some time to get use to but I have a feeling I'm going to love it after a few days.

CST wore out. After some soul-searching, I decided to go back to a regular mouse and am now using a Cooler Master MM720.

Excellent mouse for fingertip grip: 105mm, 49g, PMW3389, optical switches, soft cable. Even has side buttons, despite the small size. Feels solid, too. If it lasts, I can see this mouse moving to the top of my recommendation list for this grip.

Logitech G600, and it's FINALLY solved all my problems. I have dedicated buttons for switching desktop, window, tab, going back/forward in history, and pressing the left/right arrow key (super useful on many websites). With the g-shift key pressed (it's a third "large" mouse key"), I also have access to close/reopen tab. I'm super happy with it.

That NES controller looking mouse.
I love it, except for the stupid touch pad scroll wheel. It works okay (after you mess with the settings), but the tactility of an actual, real, wheal, is SO much better. Still gonna use it, becasue it looks so cool.

After only a month or so of using my Model D -, the mousehweel has started squeaking. Starting to think the only products they make that pass QC are their mousepads.

Guess I'm going back to my old faithful MM710 until I'm in the mood to fix it.

I want one but I'm worried there's nowhere to rest your hand/palm. Let me know if that gets tiring or old after a while.
Also don't love the button placement, seems like you'd need to hold your hand in a weird position.

Wish there was a Logi Marble style with a full-sized ball, programmable buttons, and scrolling. Maybe the Ploopy fits that bill?

At my home desktop setup, I currently use the Razer Naga Hex V2 I've had for years - and I honestly think I'd have to get a new Naga, or something similar, if my current one were to finally kick the bucket. I've gotten too used to having all of those numbers right there at my thumb for the games I play at home! Not just MMOs or games like League (which I finally quit a few months ago, best decision I've ever made!), but even for Doom Eternal or the PC port of Halo MCC's weird control bindings (Change weapon on 1? Change grenade on 2? Halo 4's sprint on Z?!? Weird, yes, but you can get used to it). Sure, the Hex V2 only goes up to 7, but I still find the utility of it indispensable in my use case. Been eyeing one of the ones that has 12 buttons, but I'm definitely not going to pull the trigger on getting a new one until I've run this one into the ground. No reason to.

As for work, though I haven't asked around too much, I've been sticking with the provided crap-tastic Lenovo "included with ThinkCentre PCs" mouse because I'm not sure they allow employees to use non-company peripherals. And, well... It definitely works as a mouse that points at things on a screen, that's for sure, but I feel like I could accidentally break it in half if I were to put a single ounce of pressure on the wrong spot, i.e., anywhere but the buttons because of the crappy plastic and build quality. Only good thing I can say about it is that the scroll wheel clicks into place nicely when scrolling, and isn't a freewheel, which I'm not a fan of. But even that's got the bad side of it not always clicking into place properly and feeling terrible.

Logitech G700s for funzies, Elecom Huge for work. I'm just slightly annoyed that the Huge apparently uses some weird-assed button functionality that doesn't let it send the correct keystrokes across RDP.

My old wired Dell optical mouse met with an "accident", so I started using a physically similar wired Microsfot optical mouse.

That was terrible - even with tracking speed set all the way up, it was still very slow.  Plus it would randomly jump the mouse pointer to one or the other side of the screen.  And the scroll wheel feels sticky.

On a whim, I unpackaged the Apple Magic Mouse 2 that came with the iMac and has never been used.  It still had about 40% charge in it.  It paired immediately (probably shipped paired originally), and has been working surprisingly well.

Instead of clicking a scroll wheel, I simply slide my finger back and forth on the smooth spot where a scroll wheel would be and the page scrolls - magic!

The only complaint is that it is a bit small for my hands, but I seem to have fairly large hands and most mouses seem too small.

Recently acquired a Logitech G Pro x Superlight as a late birthday gift for myself and have been using it over the past month+ - great mouse over all so far.
Also after getting this mouse I'm thinking of downsizing my current collection as I dont see myself using all these mice and my son's hands are too small for the majority of them (which is why I got him a MM711).  Might just keep my Scream 1 and Flick G1.
