A while back Grendel asked me if I could design a PCB for him to use in his CM Storm switch tester. I did a quick hack at an adapter board to use a Teensy. Grendel also wrote a firmware for the tester with PWM on all LEDs. Every switch has its own LED.

Does it actually work completely diode free, since I can't see diode soldering points and every switch seems to be connected straight with the teensy (which I guess makes them obsolete anyway)?
It looks to me like you only need to solder switches plus teensy, and if you want backlighting, solder leds and resistors in addition to that.
Would be nice if someone could confirm this. :)

Yes, no diodes needed. Every switch has its own pin on the controller. The other side of each switch is directly connected to ground. All LEDs have their own PWM channel.
The purrrrrfect and Niiiiiice quotes were added on request from Grendel for personal reasons. I didn't want to leave them on without him saying it was ok. The revolver cylinders are still there =)

The US can be a bit slow, two or three weeks is not uncommon. One week happens as well as four from time to time.. Within the EU is usually around 3 or 4 days.

I have to really take a deep breath and be thick skinned here, but seeing how much you love PCB design, would it be possible to ask you to design a 42 key PCB that basically puts together your Six Shooter and samwisekoi's GH36?
I have been wanting to get a 6x6 matrix with 2x3=6 thumb keys for a long time. Essentially an ergodox with matrix layout and thumb keys located nearby.I really can't do this design myself, the GH36 doesn't completely meet my need so I would have to hand wire additional keys, etc.
An thinking that one way to make it easier than the Gh36 would be to forego LEDs. Another would be to leave out support for additional stabilizers or Alps switches, making it a pure 42 key matrix. A third could be to have 1 Atmega per hand without having to run a wire between the two sides. That way each keyboard functions independently and can work as a one handed board if the thumb triggered a function layer for one handed operation.

Anyone know how to open the damned CM storm tester? I broke a screwdriver trying to pry it open and i couldn't fine any screw holes. o3o

I used one of the opening tools that CM included with their replacement top panels(for the QFR). Even then it is super difficult to open it.
Hopefully mine shows up tomorrow. I really want to get my hands on it :P

Seems good so far :D
I just filled it up with some macros and it is working great.
I had to butcher my case a bit to get all those wires to properly route up to the usb port that I moved to the back. It required the removal of one of the clips that holds the case together. It's not super noticeable and I am happy with the result. I won't see the back of it anyway. :P

4x Nixdorf's, a clicky white with a Nixdorf case (I killed a Nixie trying to remove a diode, his skin was put to good use RIP :() and an MX lock.
Currently, my only backlit board and also pretty close to being one of my most expensive boards :D. I'm currently using it as a media controller, not sure what to stick on the FN layer, maybe passwords or something. Thanks for a fun evenings work, getting the LED in the lock switch and cutting the case to fit the USB cable were the longest parts, wouldn't want to do either again...

Yeah, OTT a little, but it wouldn't be a folly if it wasn't a little bat**** insane.
I need to do something about the LEDs though, I think I miscalculated what resistors I'd need...at the moment it's working quite nicely as the only light source in the room :D.

A good starting point is 470 ohm for the LED resistors.

I'm using these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-Rectangle-White-LED-2x3x4mm-1st-Class-Postage-UK-/121128722062?) and I think I got 680ohm resistors. It's the first time I've used these LEDs though so it might just be that they're loads brighter than the old 3mm ones I had from before.

For attaching the Teensy, is there anything special or just solder all the pins with little bits of wire?

I had teensy legs left over from Phantom/Ergodox builds so I used those, presumably diode leg off cuts or something could substitue. Make sure you get the teensy as flush to the PCB as you can, it's a pretty tight fit in the bottom of the switch tester.

Try it and find out! Let the inner tinkerer out and experiment a little. Try it without resistors, and if it works, then you have your answer.
And it will work. If you don't need LEDs, you don't need resistors.
Why the way, why don't you want LEDs?

ha, thanks! i wont be using them for two reasons.... one- this will be used at work so i dont need them and two - i dont have any. ;D

Thanks again ! I ran in to an issue and had to desolder a few things because i didnt verify the solder job of the teensy. Thinking maybe i had the soldering iron a little too hot too! Regardless, got it working and am very happy that this was my first step in to the custom keyboard scene. In addition to this, we also fixed up a broken CM keyboard that belonged to a friend, he is also pretty happy.

Yes, but you will need to write your own software. Bpiphany's software and mine are for AVR.

I spent way too long trying to get the tester open last night, what is the trick?
I can wedge stuff under the side but this doesn't seem to do anything.

There are 2 tabs holding it together on both the front and back of the unit. I found it easiest (starting at the front) to slide a credit card or something into the gap first and then jam a butter knife in and slide it from one side to the other to pop the clips. Once the ones on the front are done, the back ones should be much easier.
There's a video on youtube about how to open a Filco case, the process is more or less the same.
It is super hard to get into the first few times I found though.

I didn't realize I had to go to the side to get the tabs.
I soldered it up tonight and it's working, a big thank you to everybody on this project (including metalliqaz for the excellent firmware/mapper).

I have never dabbled with building custom keyboards and these look like perfect practice boards to try with before I go buying (and ruining) a Duck custom :)).

I realized today that I could just drill a tiny hole in the bottom of the case and can hit the reset button with a paperclip. No more opening the case to reprogram! Very cool.

It would cost at least a couple of hours of my time, which realistically boils down to somewhere close to $100 an hour. You could perhaps get away with some cheap prototyping PCB service, but that makes little difference compared to the work hours... Sorry if that comes out as rude, but just get a Teensy. I don't see what a trinket would do any better.. But then again I don't know how it is different from a Teensy. My guess however is that is is mostly inferior...

Ah that's fine, I was hoping you'll do it for free like with Grendel.
Well the pro trinket is cheaper and has micro usb port (which isn't a big deal really but it's more common today).
Is the quality of the Teensy 2.0 even noticeable over the trinket for these sort of things?

The ATmega32u4 of the Teensy should be more powerful in general I reckon.
It can be fun to do new things, and I sort of owed grendel a bit... I already did this, that's all. Doing it all over for that reason just doesn't feel justified..

I'm going to be using one of these as a little bit of a 'first soldering project' so you'll have to pardon the supremely noobish questions... I'm a little unsure of how to go about attaching the teensy to the board. I assume from the photos that small bits of wire were soldered from both sides to make the connections? Would something like 22 gauge hook-up wire work for this or is that too big? or am I completely misunderstanding how this is done?

Some Teensies come with legs already attached. They are quite thick. I don't know how much 22 america-silly-unit-gauges are. You may have some clipped component leads lying around (everyone with a soldering iron should have a bag handy). They will work perfectly fine as well.

I'll just give them a shot unless otherwise suggested. it seems to be the most common size carried on small electronic hobby sites (raspi stuff etc).
I've seen the teensy with the pins attached but the headers seemed like it'd be too thick in this case since the teensy seems to need to be mounted petty flush.

Yeah, if you buy the Teensy with pins you'll need to trim them then remove the black spacer to get the height down. From reading around 22AWG is what's recommended for breadboard so that will work for this - singe core (not stranded) will be easier :)

Well, not at the moment. I thought there wouldn't be much interest any more.. But there is, so I will be ordering more as soon as pcbwing is up and running again after the Chinese New Year. It will be a couple of weeks before I get them. I'll post here to inform you when they are back "in stock".

Got another bunch of PCBs. Anyone still interested send me a PM.
I've also been told there is a new version of the tester itself which has a Topre key like the ones on the novatouch. That case will probably require some more hacking to fit the Six Shooter.

I'm using it... was actually browsing this (and it's thread) looking for some answers. It seems to be working well in general, but I'm unable to use alt codes in macros or access the config menu with it. I assume the former is due to the lack of a numlock key on my main board (TKL).
I tried using \NUMLK, at the beginning and end of the macro but it errors during compile saying unrecognized escape sequence.
Setting a config menu key outputs nothing. Im guessing due to the fact that it's not a full keyboard? I wasnt sure if config would work utilizing number and enter keys on my main board or if they had to be on the AVR board. I was looking to enable "unlink num lock" and "virtual num pad" this way to allow for alt codes, but I could be going about this incorrectly.

I have a tool kit with these in it and they're far too soft to open the case. I typically use a knife blade personally. My kit even has some metal tools in it but they bend trying to open the tester.

You weren't kidding. I had to use a putty knife that I used to protect the bottom case of the tester, then a small metal pry bar that is used for removing baseboard trim to pull the top from the bottom to get a small flat head screwdriver far enough in to find the catches. There is no way a plastic pry bar would be able to do this. Now I know why they sell them in packs of 5. That's one beefy case for a switch tester.

Not sure there'll be a lot of interest, but I've made a configuration for this board in QMK. It's available in the main QMK repository now. LED handling is a bit basic but can be customized to do something fancier if you'd like.
