INTEREST CHECK

Hello keyboard enthusiasts, you all like Nintendo right? Well here's a nice keyset based on the original Gameboy colours. Hopefully something fun, but fairly understated, and with a nice dose of nostalgia.  Gunpei Yokoi's revolutionary little funbox was codenamed 'Dot Matrix Game' during development, which carried over to the product model number 'DMG-01'.  So here we go, it's:

KITS

The base kit hopefully manages that difficult balance of compatibility and affordability, but I welcome community feedback as I'm no expert in this regard, especially when it comes to the slightly more esoteric layouts (I only really use 65% and TKL). I'd personally really like a Colevrak kit as I'm a Colemak user so speak up if you're interested in that. If enough people want something, I'm sure we can accomodate. And if people like the set, once we've hammered out the details we'll get some nice renders done to have a good stare at instead of my shonky photoshopped kle things.

COLOURS

UPDATED 4th Sept '18 - I've been in contact with Uniqey/GMK and they've confirmed that I can just send them a Gameboy for them to match the colours to. This will ensure the best colour accuracy and was my biggest hope from the start so I'm really happy they're able to do it and are up for it. The representative I spoke with seemed genuinely enthusiastic about it and thinks it's gonna be a fun project. All I have to do now is find the closest thing to a NIB Gameboy I can, (mine is good but I think probably very slightly yellowed), without spending insane amounts on ebay. Fresh lookin' Gameboy acquired!

I've mocked this up for ease of reference. The colours on the Gameboy should be taken as the goal, rather than the mock ups of the kits, which may not match exactly. We'll have nicer renders soon anyway  :D

VENDORS

Now then, I've never run a GB and have no burning desire to handle the logistics of one, so I'm very pleased to say that side of things will be left in the more than capable hands of Jason at TKC https://thekey.company/ (https://thekey.company/), runner of GMK Terminal, GMK Led Zep, DSA Drifter, the TKC1800, etc. Rest assured, he knows his stuff. There'll be the usual proxies to make things better for international buyers.

More
NOVELTIES

I'll be straight with you. I've never bought any novelty packs. But I have a few ideas, and I welcome the community to get involved here as well. If we can come up with something special I'm sure we can offer it up in the GB. I'd really like to include a translucent green cap, in the Gameboy screen colour, similar to how GMK Camping included the translucent fire cap. This could be blank or include a printed legend, but I don't know what of. I've also included a 'battery' windowed 1u key in the base kit. This would have to be pad printed and would be dependant on whether the word will even fit on a 1u key.

TIMEFRAME

Well, there's no shortage of GMK GBs running at any given time so there's no use waiting for a gap. The Key Company have some other things in the pipeline so this set won't run for a while, but if people are into it then hopefully the good word can spread and by the time the GB launches there'll be huge swathes of you all ready to pounce and help turn these ideas into beautiful, cold, hard, doubleshot ABS plastic.

SUPPORT

If you wanna show support for the set and spread the word then you can stick this code in your signature to get this little image in there which links to this IC:

PS. Thanks to Plex for the original keyboard render and Xondat for use of the 280 (even though I didn't ask permission).

EDIT: Added a 40s kit and changed the spacebar kit to just include accent colour mini-spacebars.
EDIT 2: Added colour guide and sig.

It’d be more awesome with a black WASZ cluster, and if we can agree on 2 1u magenta alpha keycaps  :thumb:

Maybe “N” and “I”, like a low key nod to Nintendo? Or “G” and “Y”, for Gunpei Yokoi?

Title: Re: [IC] GMK DMG - A Gameboy inspired keyset

Love the theme and colors of this set. I don't think you have to go crazy with novelties, even just a couple artisans such as the translucent cap (green to represent the screen) or an artisan, like Rama's wave cap to represent the ridges on the back would be fun  ;D

Would love to see some text modifier, such as 'select' and 'start' along with the the magenta color arrow keys.

This is completely extra, but I love the IC picture based off the original box and would think it would be neat to have a deskpad with that kind of design or aesthetic.

It‘s super brilliant, but when used with a red LED, it also might give you that bad gut feeling of low battery and having no new ones around..! (aka running around the house and searching for devices less important so you can take the batteries from them..)

For what it's worth I like the darker colors of your set + matching text on the mods better than the originative set. Not feeling SNES CO at all.

Interested at least, and would buy for sure with good novelties.

Only thing with the base set is that I would prefer the R3 "Ctrl" to be "Control" to be consistent with other keys.
Also, a nice touch to the newer GMK sets is the R4 Caps Lock.  I don't think it is necessary (even to me), but I think it should be considered if it does push up the price too much.

Title: Re: [IC] GMK DMG - A Gameboy inspired keyset - 40s KIT ADDED
Post by: futurecrime on Wed, 15 August 2018, 18:43:18
I've added a Pocket Kit for 40s. This matches the GMK Terminal 40s kit. I'm not sure how many of these text mod moulds would need to be made so perhaps it may be prohibitively expensive, but we'll see. I've also changed up the spacebar kit to only include accent colour spacebars, which will bring the price down for that set.

I'll respond to some more of your comments tomorrow. Had a long day at work and am off to sleep now.  :blank:

This is just adorable. I'm not really into the retro GMK aesthetic, but I really like this! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for novelties (something subtle like Start and Select keys would be to my taste). The battery key is already basically an awesome subtle novelty and I'm glad it's in the base set!

I think this set would be really neat on a small ortho board like a Planck... I'm just concerned about the cost and number of leftover keys if I want to go that route  ;)
Also if I use this set for an ortho board I'd probably want Dvorak support -- any word on a colevrak kit?

1.25 Blanks please

Also, I would personally not join if "Control" legends are there, "Ctrl" is more elegant, "Control" always looks awkward on 1.25 keycaps and 1.75 stepped keycap (I use the 1.75 Stepped "Ctrl")

Awesome keyset in general, you can count me in if you change your mind about the "Control" :)

Good base set with compatibility.  Couldn't this be enjoyPBT dyesubs though? Mostly dark legends on a light background.

Also, I prefer "Control" over "Ctrl" with this set, it's in keeping with the word only modifiers and retro aesthetic.

OK, I have time to answer a few queries tonight!

Proxy EU and i'm in

KMK Labs.

There'll certainly be an EU proxy. That side of things is down to Jason at TKC.

I love the theme, but I think the one thing missing is some representation of that good ol' green screen.

Couldn't agree more. But this will most likely be a launch day buy for me. That color combo is perfect.

Yeah I've tried a bunch of ways to get it in but the set gets very busy. I'm really gunning for the translucent green cap at least, I reckon that'd look really nice.

Love the theme and colors of this set. I don't think you have to go crazy with novelties, even just a couple artisans such as the translucent cap (green to represent the screen) or an artisan, like Rama's wave cap to represent the ridges on the back would be fun  ;D

This is completely extra, but I love the IC picture based off the original box and would think it would be neat to have a deskpad with that kind of design or aesthetic.

If the set gains traction I'd also be up for doing a matching deskmat, it's all the rage right now innit.

Some sort of 1.5u OS key like “super” (for Mac users) would be great! Also agree with some sort of WASD ACCENT, since this is a game-inspired kit

I appreciate the desire for a Super key, but I think Code is a decent OS agnostic key. Catering to Mac, Windows and Linux users seperately with all the different size variations would unfortunately increase the cost significantly.

Thanks for the support guys. Just spoke to Jason and we'll defo be offering up a 40s kit. Will mock it up asap.

Don’t forget about the Minivan. 😁

Hopefully the Pocket Kit should give you enough to cover the Minivan.

Battery key is brilliant. All over this.

I hope to one day see it immortalised on the table.

Yeah I'm aware of the SNES set. It's been in the wings for ages. I think this set is different enough to co-exist, and personally I prefer it (quelle surprise).

Nice catch. I've fixed it now.  What would the R4 Caps Lock be used for? Do people swap it out with Control?

This is just adorable. I'm not really into the retro GMK aesthetic, but I really like this! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for novelties (something subtle like Start and Select keys would be to my taste). I'd love to do a Colevrak kit but they only really hit moq with hugely succesful sets on Massdrop. Hopefully we can offer it anyway, even if the chances of it hitting are super slim.

1.25 Blanks please

Are you only concerned about the R4 Control keys, or the R3 as well? I personally prefer the full word and think it fits the set better but if there's a general opinion that Ctrl is better then people can speak up and I'll go with the vote.

I like “code” as well, I just used “super” as an example- but the OS key on a Mac is a 1.5u key and I don’t see it in the base kit. Still excited for this set, it’d just be nice to have an OS key as something else other than “alt” :)

1.25 Blanks please

Everyone has their opinion and tastes, and almost everyone is very religious about their opinions

But objectively speaking, the 1.25U area is very low, GMK legends are left-aligned, and there's beauty in that, if the legends for center-aligned for example, I think we would all agree that it wouldn't look as good, now comes why I don't like "Control" on 1.25 areas, because it spans almost the entire area, and the "Control" legend looks as if it was mis-properly center-aligned, rather than an elegantly and beautiful left-aligned legend

Since I don't use the R4 "Control", my problem is more with the R3 1.75U Stepped "Control" - the stepped area is 1.25U, there's a 0.5U gap there, if the R3 1.75U Stepped keycap becomes "Ctrl" - I'll be very happy

You can see a 1.75 Stepped "Ctrl" here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-livingspeedbump-gmk-mint-dolch <- very elegent looking, simple, un-crowded

(Also 1.25 blanks please)

But is there any chance to add 2u shift?

Sorry my friend, I don't think there's enough demand for 2u shift to warrant adding it.

Are you only concerned about the R4 Control keys, or the R3 as well? I personally prefer the full word and think it fits the set better but if there's a general opinion that Ctrl is better then people can speak up and I'll go with the vote.

Thanks for the detailed reasoning, I appreciate it and am always into hearing people get down to the finer points of design. I'm gonna consider it.

Personally liked the spacebar kit more when it included both colors. :(  And no 2U in the spacebar kit if I'm reading right.

Splitting this way makes the 40s kit and the spacebar kit better balanced I think. I've matched the Terminal r2 spacebar and 40s kits which I think work well and aren't too expensive. I think I might add that 2u accent colour spacebar to the spacebar kit though.

I want this, but I know it's gonna have to have a ton of meme layout kits added to it.

I think this might be it for kits tbh. I'd like to add Colevrak but it seems like a futile endeavour, no-one has asked for Ergodox yet, and I'm leaning towards just doing a couple of 'novelties' which will be in base kit. So, pretty streamlined I reckon. Glad you like it, and if you get it I look forward to seeing some nice pics.  :)

The price of that 40s kit to get the base color spacebar was a reason that I ended up skipping terminal.  I didn't like the accent colors for the space after consideration, and the 40s kit is just too expensive to get two of them.  But thanks for considering in any case.

Sorry, forgot to reply to this. I don't wanna share just yet. I'm still settling on details and figuring out the best way to go about it all. Will update as soon as I have anything firm. Just to be totally clear, the colour reference is this:

No plans for ergodox so far. I'm not confident it'd hit MOQ tbh.

I'd say they're a very blue purple. Go by the Gameboy, not my kit renders.

Are there any plan of spliting up the base kit into numpad kit and non-numpad base kit?
Since I have got lots of numpad key unused at home which feel a kind of waste.

Btw, I am a fan of 40%~60%, which may not be the majority?

I've chatted about this in the past on discord because I wondered why it's never been done (to my knowledge) with GMK sets. It was a surprisingly unpopular idea. I can see both sides of the argument, but I personally like having it in the base kit.

This set is really growing on me, I love the accent color. Any possibility of adding alternate function keys and arrow keys in accent colors? It will be great if mods in accent colors can be added as separate kit. Apologize if it feels like spamming and asking too much.

I've toyed with the idea of having two accented alpha keys but TBH it sounds better in principle than it looks. I also added black arrow keys initially but discarded the idea as it didn't look great.  The Start and Select keys are also an idea that I've played around with a little bit, but the problem is where to incorporate them. R4 mod keys would be nice but really need to be made in a few sizes, so it starts to get expensive pretty quickly. I agree that 1u Start and Select would look cool on a Planck but I think some of the text modifiers in the current 40s kit will require new moulds anyway (still need to clarify this), so I'm very wary of adding more stuff to it.  And I'm not sure making a novelties kit of start and select keys in various sizes would be appealing enough.  I'll keep thinking on it anyway. Thanks for the input guys.

Great news! I've been in contact with Uniqey/GMK and they've confirmed that I can just send them a Gameboy for them to match the colours to.

Maybe this one? https://tinyurl.com/y8k4ypf2

I don't think this would have much chances to succeed, but if it allows you to not spend 4k$ on a gameboy...

TKC is currently getting quotes from GMK for the kits (including a novelty kit). We're also looking to keep the price down so you'll probably see some changes in the base kit. I want to please as many people as possible but if the kit is too big and expensive to hit MOQ then everyone loses. It's a tightrope act. Stay tuned.

The colours will be matched to a Gameboy that I'm gonna send to GMK. I don't think there's any way to get a better match than that. But yes, as nasp said, the buttons are magenta, not red.

On another note, we're hoping to have a big update very soon - with renders and maybe some price estimates - probably after this weekend. In terms of set changes it looks like it'll just be very minor changes to the base kit, just subtle design decisions and corrections.

There will be an MOQ of 250 for this set, due to the custom colours, so please do spread the word if you want to make this a reality.

Love this idea, or anything else that would been ambiguous enough for the use of function where caps lock usually is.

Not trying to critical... just had an observation when I was thinking about how I would use the set.  I was thinking about how I would use it on an ortho keyboard, like the Planck or Preonic.  I occurs to me that, if you use the esc and return keys with the magenta font, then this would look good with the raise key also with the magenta font, but, if you use the magenta esc and return with the white font, then all of the gray keys will have the blue font, except the raise key, which would be the single key with the magenta font.  The first layout seems like it would look good, but the second one seems like it would look odd, with only one key with a magenta font sitting there unbalance.

Anyway, like I said, I just tried to visualize it, and it didn't really seem right, if you used the accent keys, which I like.  Just my opinion, for what it's worth.  Also, if you were doing a Preonic build and wanted to have a caps lock and second shift, there wouldn't be dedicated keys for that, but I realize it's pretty common to use other keys, like meta or code for such things.

Great work! I'm curious to know where you get the keycap color samples with the labels. Also, I've seen other people with Pantone color wheels. As someone who is interested in designing keycaps, where would I find these things?

Thanks for the help.  :thumb:

I personally like the look of the lighter mod color in the renders. It seems like the color you’re matching to the gameboy will be significantly darker. Is that a fair assumption?

I also prefer the lighter mod color, it definitely blends in better with the set. It'd be understandable however if you decide to choose a darker color to best match the Gameboy.

Is there any cost to be saved by having only some of the colours be custom? Might as well go for max accuracy if GMK have the actual Gameboy to sample from.

All the colours will be custom. I only put the GMK stock colour samples in those pics so everyone could get a reference based on existing sets, regardless of monitor calibration. Regarding the modifier grey, I want to match the Gameboy as much as possible, but the screen surround is very shiny and often appears lighter than it does in those pics. I also feel like the legends could get lost if the grey is too dark. There will be samples so I'll judge it as best I can and find the happy balance of fidelity and legibility.

I don't have Gameboy nostalgia, but I like the colour scheme. Dark purple legends on white background is a classic also on computers keyboards (e.g. Wyse, Sun), as is an accent colour on the Return key.

I don't see why the Insert, Home and PgUp keys need to have a different text colour though. Personally I prefer that the Return/Enter key should be named "Return" but I don't understand why the numpad-Enter should also be "Return".

BTW, I think it a missed opportunity to not name the Windows key "Start" (the "Start menu"!) and the Menu key "Select".  (Although, "Select" has a different meaning on vintage terminal keyboards, not many people remember it)

Thanks for the feedback. The nav cluster colour is inspired by the two stripes on the screen border of the Gameboy.

I had designed Start and Select novelties among others but the kit I designed would have been unfeasibly large. There will be a novelty included with the final base kit (soon to be revealed). TKC will be working with other makers to produce some more Gameboy inspired keys available separately after the GB.

I would say its because the arrow keys are modifier keys so they are the same colors as the rest of the modifiers. This is a keyset first, and "gameboy inspired" second.

Of course I may be spouting a load of nonsense but that happens any time I open my mouth  :p

The new renders are closest to the aim. The old layout renders were very crude. The intention has always been to match the Gameboy, and the latest renders used the closest matching Pantones I could find. We're still gonna send a Gameboy to GMK for matching but I think those two Janglad renders are pretty spot on

Looking at the render on TKC, some keys were removed from the base kit render shown in the OP.  The R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn are gone.  There's no R4 1U Ctrl or Alt for the bottom row anymore.  The 1U R4 Code keys are gone.  There are other deletions as well; that's just where I lost interest and stopped.  Check the new kit render shown on TKC (not the one in this thread) carefully before ordering.

There was a big update at the top of the first post and in this thread saying the base kit had changed. The render wasn't available at the time. We were working up to the wire to get this ready and it happened to go up on TKC before it was updated here. TKC is in Michigan, I'm in London so we are in different time zones. Hopefully that explains why there was a lag before this thread was updated (we're not trying to mislead anyone!). I've put the new render there now.

Regarding the key changes, we responded to feedback and made changes accordingly. As with any key set GB, a balance has to be struck between compatibility and cost. Sorry if we got rid of specific caps that you want but the kit covers a multitude of layouts and hopefully some novelties or alternative caps can be used in their stead. There are R4 1u Start and Select and 4x R4 1u button novelty caps to replace the Ctrl Alt and Code keys you mentioned, for example. Lots of people requested novelties for the set so we added a load. I'm sorry that you've decided it's not for you, hopefully most people will still find the caps they want in this final kit.

I like the start and select and the button ones, but while I like them, I think putting the dpad ones in the base kit was a mistake. With 2 new molds, a new color and 4 extra keys, they alone likely added 10-15 to the base cost. Gmk has a per color kit cost.

I could care less about removing code tho.

EDIT: I’m still getting 1-2 in a few weeks.

I just ordered! So excited to get this set! Quick question? Do you know if we need to get the Pocket Modifiers for the Candy Bar Keyboard?

I feel you but we actually added the arrow keys after the retail price was set from the previous base kit so the cost hasn't been passed on to the buyers. Arrow keys were one thing that was repeatedly asked for in the feedback, I designed them early on but thought they were too extravagent, but now I'm glad to have them included and I reckon they're gonna be worth it.

Cheers for getting on board with this kit man!

The final kit looks great. I think the price is fine considering what is actually included and the arrow novelties are exactly what I was hoping for. I just put in my order so I hope it all goes well.

Now that the GB is open, shouldn't there be a proper GB thread?  Is it still just waiting to be approved?

I realised I haven't explicitly pointed out what novelties we've ended up adding to the base kit, and they're scattered around the image a bit so here's the list:

2x 1u R4 button novelties on alpha colour.
2x 1u R4 button novelties on mod colour.
2x 1.25u R4 button novelties on mod colour.
D-pad arrow cluster w/ mod colour legends on N9 base.
1x 1u R4 Start novelty on mod colour.
1x 1u R4 Select novelty on mod colour.
1x 1.25u R4 Start novelty on mod colour.
1x 1.25u R4 Select novelty on mod colour.
1x 1u R1 battery novelty on mod colour windowed cap.
