Using a numpad on the left side
« on: Sat, 16 January 2016, 16:21:41 »
Hey there

I was wondering if anyone right handed has found utility in using a numpad left to your tkl/75%/etc.  and has gotten used to using it and can use it with similar skill as a right hand numpad?.

I have yet to try it out, waiting on my Jane pad but it certainly seems the practical way. Why take your hand off your mouse to input numbers when you could do both at the same time. I have actually come up with a 1800ish layout where the numpad is on the left. Xondat and I are working on the case and design so I'm hoping it will be an enjoyable board.

I haven't tried it, but seems like a good idea to try. I like having my mouse right next to my 60%, so having the numpad on the left i imagine would be fairly efficient.

I don't really get it. If the layout isn't mirrored, are you supposed to press the zero with a pinkie, or what?

Yeah it would be a little awkward.

But mind you the reason I'd like to try this is so I'll be able to have the mouse close to the home row still.

My main concern with the numpad on the left side always has been it would increase the usage of the pinky for the keys on the left side, like the 0, 1, 4, and 7.  On a right hand numpad, I would never use my pinky for the far right keys, but rather move my ring finger over there.

I think the layout would have to be mirrored for me to use a numpad on the left side.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

I've wondered about this myself and will be getting a 23UB really soon. I'm quite adept at using the numberpad with my right, since I'm right-handed but wanted to increase my efficiency by having the numberpad on my left. I'll get back to this thread once I've had some time acclimating (if i do so at all  :) )

Came here to say that. Check out the (Rubber dome, trigger warning) Microsoft Sidewinder X6. The numpad is magnetic and can be switched sides, I always had it on the left as, ergonomically, it made more sense.

I have an external numpad for work, keep it on the left. Its a bit awkward due to the layout, but it gets the job done. Looking into making one with a better layout and dedicated arrow keys.

Been using it for the last 2 years on and off

It's great that your right hand travel less to reach the mouse, but to use the numpad with the left is a little weird and hard

But then you have to take your right hand off of your mouse to use it. Doesn't that get annoying?

I am using one of these to the left of a Pok3r

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016PB994?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

It has a big 0, so I can use the pinkie and the ring together.  I use this for long strings of numbers.

I also am trying an alt layout with 7531980246, but it is proving difficult, so I added the numpad.

Im thinking of doing something really DIY with my leftover clear switches and an arduino uno i have laying around, there is firmware for it to make it a USB HID device, not sure what id use for a case/ plate yet though.

But i do want to get / build a nice numpad at some point.

I was running my 23U on the left prior to some shifting about (now I cannot) and honestly I can't do it

I may give it another go but I much prefer being able to rest my pinky on enter, maybe a mirrored one...hmm.

Thanks for the G19, G110, G510 keyboards, I get used to spam keys with my left hand. Right hand never leave my mouse.
I use a left handed keyboard for work, Race 1 + numpad on the left when game.
Of course I can't be as fast as accounting people typing numbers. But good enough entering coordinates, pixel, values in adobe suite.

Hopefully more people find this layout more productivity, we can have more choices on the market.

I use a numpad on the left a lot. I actually use both of them ;_;

Got used to it from working/modelling in Blender, where a lot of nice things are bound to the numpad (navigation, object focusing, etc), while main shortcuts populate the left/middle side of the keyboard.

Numpad on the left is great when you're right handed and use the mouse a lot, then you have a lot more buttons in the immediate reach of your left hand, even though it's pinky-side.

Numpad on the right is good as well, because you have easy access to it with the thumb of the mouse hand. This way you can cover 100% of the numpad with minimum movement, divided between both hands :P

Though in general, I think there are no good fast workflows for mouse/keyboard setups :/

I prefer having the numpad far on the right side and forward. I don't use it that much, so it's nice not having it take up space but still within easy reach.

I find it does take quite a bit of getting used to using it with your left hand. At that point, I'm not entirely sure that it's faster than using the number row on your primary keyboard.

Even with a mirrored numpad, I could not get used to it. For those that want to try, what I did was buy a Genovation 683, 24-key programmable pad and program it as a mirrored numpad. They have doublewidth keys so it can be a perfect mirror.

I stopped using it and now use the Genovation for actual macros.

In my job I enter a lot of coordinates.  Most of my navigation must be done with the mouse, which results in constant back and forth between my mouse and keyboard.  I've been in the market for a standalone numpad so I can put it on the left to enter the coordinates with my left hand and click between fields with my right.

I'm a curious observer of DSI's left handed keyboard, could anyone confirm key cap compatibility? Is it a cherry compatible ANSI 104 w/big ass enter? I'm 'doing' a write up on my 'blog' about random keyboards and I don't want to write down the wrong info.

<snip>

Edit - I dug deeper and found some information about the 1u backslash, 1u backspace, and 1.5u x 2.25u enter key. But at this point I'm still assuming that the spacebar is 6.5u, any information would be extremely helpful at this point.

To be completely honest I am keeping this keyboard on my list of boards to buy in the future.  :thumb:

Thank you so much for this. I emailed DSI asking if they used wire stabilizers and ended asking the CEO about the stabilizers over the phone. So, wire stabilizers (Costar) and a 6.5u spacebar awesome  :)

I doubt that I could get used to having the numpad on the left but I have placed it in front on my board which is works very well for me as I either have to type a lot without the need for a numpad or have to enter a lot of number without the need to type anything else.

Man, now I remember. That's one of the numpads that does not output numpad codes :(. I like how that numpad looks though.

I really want a numpad without the extra four buttons but AFAIK those have to be built from a kit

I'm right handed and still like to 10-key with that hand so I just moved the numpad to the opposite side of the mouse.

Code: [Select]

Seemed like the thing to do. /shrug

Considering I only need a little 6x6in square space to move my mouse this makes total sense to me. I haven't used a numpad with my left hand since I worked a retail job that needed me to write up the nightly bank slips. I don't why I thought I needed a left handed keyboard :-[

Doesn't have to be.  What's your priority?  If you're entering numbers that frequently then maybe you should use a full-size board.  Or better yet, assign the numpad to its own layer under the alphas (in firmware).  Then your hands don't need to move at all.   ;)

I like 10-key for number entry but I don't do it so often that traversing the mouse to use the numpad is even a distant problem.

Some reasons why I like having the numpad in its usual position in a full-size keyboard:
-I like having my thumb on the arrow keys while using the numpad, and to have the navigation keys within easy reach without having to toggle numlock.
-My chair's position is dictated by my desk, and my normal configuration of stuff has no space to the left of the keyboard, so the mouse winds up in the same place no matter which side of the keyboard the number pad is on.
-I'm right-handed, and prefer to use the numpad with my dominant hand.
-The placement of long keys on the number pad is more suitable for the right hand.
-Having nothing to the left of the alphanumeric area makes hand placement easier.

Hey there

I was wondering if anyone right handed has found utility in using a numpad left to your tkl/75%/etc.  and has gotten used to using it and can use it with similar skill as a right hand numpad?.

I was left-handed before they told me to switch (1st grade or so), and I could probably still find it as easy to use if not easier on the left-hand side, given time, especially as I can use the mouse in my left hand if I really have to (some years ago I could and did switch mouse hands more easily). Bonus: a left numpad wouldn't get in the way of your mouse for a right-handed person. Think TKL benefits without giving up the numpad.
