Title: Post your B-Fry Shopping lists.
Post by: tp4tissue on Mon, 11 November 2019, 20:27:20
It's Game week People.... LOTS'o deals are let loose early to head off competitors.. Keep eyes out..

Tp4 List:

- 2TB Nvme ssd

- 2TB Sata ssd

- 5700XT, if price is right.

It's kind of ridiculous that 1060s still sell for $150 on ebay. was hoping they'd be $75 by now.

- Some sort of lightweight + Warm clothing thing. Still researching this one.

Your list looks more cyber monday tp4?

Not sure if bike components are included but I'll be looking for the latest Shimano dynamo hub reduced as it seems to be a US exclusive and that means import tax etc.

I also usually check out Nuclear Blast's site and pick up some old CDs.

This is if I remember, which doesn't seem likely.

Beware of Budget laptops this year guys,  If you factor in the Upgrades,  they're not very good deals. you might as well start with a more expensive base.

And just in case peeps don't remember,

NEVER BUY SINGLE CHANNEL LAPTOP EVER..

Finally, laptop screens, budget laptops are shipping with 6-bit non-dithered screens now,  This ontop of 60% srgb color gamut ,  WITHOUT calibration, it's not pretty. Think pictures left in the sun, get a bit pale/ photo bleached. This is particularly visible in the REDs, very muddy and not Ruby-bright.

1660s or TI
Similar to a 1070 but much lower heat output and noise.

Not much for me to upgrade otherwise, my current gpu is just a bit loud under load but component-wise it's all good.

Yeah, at double the price and almost double the heat output.

GTX 1660 TI = 117 watts 70fps avg  ~ $250
RTX 2070 S = 209 watts  100fps avg ~ $500
(Far Cry and BFV @ 1440p on ultra, as per Guru 3D)

My current card (RX 580) does all I need, it's just noisy and hot (190 watts). The 2070 would actually run even hotter than what I currently have (though it would be working less hard, so that could be a wash).

Bell is now selling gaming laptops with A GTX 1060.

Animated grass just released in one of my games ( Oops game platform as the brand would like to be called) so i might have to upgrade. Can't even run Toy Soldiers demo at a solid 60 ):(

Why are 1080s still $1000+  >:D

They've been around HOW long? Almost 4 freaking years ago? In fact I think they cost more now than this same time last year.

I'm never gonna upgrade my gpu it seems  :'(

No.
People are asking that for them, it's not what they are getting for them. High end models are having troubles getting $500, even hybrid air/water cooled EVGA models.

I've seen them offered for $300 and still not sell.

Because the people who sell them are probably roping parents who don't know anything about GPUS.

Bell is now selling a GTX 1060 laptop for gaming. That's seriously outdated. Pretty sure their three-screen rig in the mall isn't a 1060.

It's old, but not outdated.
It's a one generation old, mid tier card, but you have to realize the gains since it came out have been relatively minor.

It's not like comparing a 960 and a 760, Nvidia was making pretty good jumps between generations at that point, they have not lately and this is why the 10 series cards sat on shelves for so long. It's also why  Nvidia released RTX, they needed something to market to people and sell new cards. How else were they going to deal with the MASSIVE FLOOD of 1070s and 1080s entering the used market when mining died. If 1080 was still "the best" and those were suddenly plentiful on the used market for cheap who would bother buying a new 1080? The people who really wanted one and could afford it already bought one and the lower tiers would be happy buying them used if they were pennies on the dollar.

This is also why Nvidia has something like 14 different 2060 models (seriously, there is a bunch), they want to flood you with options, even if it confuses you in order to make sure there is not only a card for every budget but also to make darn sure you question buying that older 1080. I know people point to AMD as the driving force on Nvidia pricing, but I also guarantee you the used market was a major concern for them.

Using power is easy, the problem is getting heat out.

Less power in = less heat you need to get out.

The thing I like about AMD cards is they enable dithering by default. So when you use color calibrations, it provides a slightly smoother gradient than Nvidia.

With nvidia, to enable dithering you have to do a bunch of registry tweaks, and it doesn't stick after reboot, they also keep changing things between 1803 1903 1909.

Honestly I just wanna find a really nice black cable-knit wool cardigan. I've ordered 3 cheap ones off Amazon already, and they were all poop. Either fit weird or were of poor quality. I hate shopping for clothes online, it always turns into a week's wait in the 'changing room' trying on crappy products and waiting for the return and new one to try on, before inevitably returning that one too. I JUST WANT A BLACK SWEATER, WHY IS THAT SO DIFFICULT?

Currently mostly the g5 laptop, cuz, i need to justify owning it, to myself, because, I probably don't really need it.  <you lie Tp , you lie, you need it.. >

But Overall, my main has been 6700K @ 4.8ghz.

Gonna upgrad to Ryzen 3 at some point.. probably threadripper.. 5700xt would go nicely, because there's been no other amd announcements.

THE ONLY THING holding me back, is Nvidia's announcement to support Reshade,  which will offer  3DLUT calibration for ALL games ..  This is a BIG DEAL..  if this is the case, 1660TI / 2060/ 2070 SUPER are going to be better..

Well, it's similar to people being drunk every day of superbowl week,  except for BF week, they're shopping and not drunk.

Or they could be drunk shopping, IDK what the young people are into these days.

"Holiday Sale"

And they won't stop because it's a marketing ploy, there's actually very few really good deals which are just there as loss leaders. Many stores make 60-80% of their yearly income during the holidays, Best Buy and bicycle shops in particular. Christmas orders in these industries are often placed 6 or more months in advance.

Pro tip, if you want a bicycle for Christmas don't wait until December, buy it in Oct. or early Nov. and be sure to negotiate a deal, especially in Oct. when no one is buying and rent is due. And be sure to take it home, shady shops will sell it out from under you with or without the promise of getting you another in time, which they may or may not be able to do. Even good bike shops become the shadiest of used car dealerships during the holidays.

So the standard bump up the price then mark as 50% off when it's only really 10% a week later?  I noticed this in the supermarket, when the price goes up plan to eat it next week :))

Call me a pessimist but Christmas shopping in October gives the recipient the best part of three months to die or get crippled leaving me stuck with their useless (to me) bike, don't think I could bring myself to do that.  Guess I'll stick to puppies ;)

That's an anti n00b measure.

Tp4 memorize the prices of computer parts every year. It's impossible to Trix Tp4 on parts prices.

That's because you buy so many!  Given the choice I wouldn't have bought a computer part since *checks e-mail invoices* November 2016, and at that time I didn't want to buy what I did (mobo died so had to upgrade CPU and RAM as well)  Doesn't matter if something was cheaper a year ago as I always have to buy NOW so I'd rather not know I'm getting ripped off as I'm already annoyed enough that something's broken.

Sat bored at the train station so related to the above 'never looking before it dies' I've decided to look at monitors.  I would prefer a 4:3 but they died long ago, there don't seem to be any 3:2 ones despite that ratio being available on other devices and I'm struggling to find anything in 16:10 even.  My desk is width limited so looks like this will be another 'upgrade' which will actually be a downgrade (in vertical resolution)  Other option could be two stupid res monitors (16:9) in portrait, though I'd be looking for true bezel-less and probably wouldn't like the price tag.

Any thoughts?  I think I have around 47cm of width based on the specs found of what I think is my current monitor

The world is the computer, the computer is the world,  Nothing else much matters.  There is only 1 arena of optimization.

Less everything else, m0ar Computer Space.

I've seen people use metal L brackets instead of table w/ legs.  This saves And Gives alot of space.

Thanks for the reminder how pointless life is, in my fuzzy haze I'd managed to steer clear of such thoughts.  That my second biggest problem is the possibility of having a mismatched desk so I can fit the stupid size monitor the world tells me I want says it all.

I have no idea what use an L bracket is compared to a desk either - I guess it's a wall mounted pseudo monitor stand?  But then where do you put your keyboard, or computer for that matter.

The L bracket holds up the table top you screw into the stud in the wall. If you have alot of weight, you can put a second l bracket from the top. If you need keyboard tray you can install your old one with the slider on the new table top.

Any thoughts?  I think I have around 47cm of width based on the specs found of what I think is my current monitor

It's always easier to get a bigger desk, than making the monitor smaller.

You haven't seen the desk, it's like a cupboard and the pile on top nearly touches the ceiling :))  Not to mention having to pay for a desk I don't want or need...

The world is the computer, the computer is the world,  Nothing else much matters.  There is only 1 arena of optimization.

Less everything else, m0ar Computer Space.

I've seen people use metal L brackets instead of table w/ legs.  This saves And Gives alot of space.

Sadly yes

Steam Controllers are $5 + shipping right now, last chance to ever get one. I wound up paying $14.31 all told, not bad at all.

I've been curious to see how it performs, and the price is right.

I've seen more than a few places mention that the really good deals have been few and far between compared to years past.
Honestly, that's good.

I hear there are good deals on Intel this year.  :))

Intel CPUs, no one is buying them.

My understanding (depending on who you talk to) is that Microcenter was selling 8 or 9 AMD for every Intel CPU on Black Friday deals. I'd expect further Intel price cuts either just after New years or heavy ones in March, depending on how they interpret this quarter's sales. Don't expect them before New Years though, Intel is reactionary, not pro-active.

99.8% of computers i used have intel cpus in them. It's time that someone takes them down
