Hey! Welcome to the GMK PONO Interest Check

Before attempting an IC, I reached out to both Olivia and Nat (Minterly) to see if this was okay and clear the colors.


Pono is a combination of Pink and Mono, which coincidentally is also this mischievous kitteh's name. Pono is grey kitteh with a pink button nose

Although it certainly does look quite a bit like Olivia++ w/ dark alphas, that "Purr" keycap is amazing, and I want it in my life. If the molds are made, I can imagine many uses for that cap, in many color combinations.

I like this a lot! I almost went in for Olivia Dark but the pink was a bit too...fleshy for my taste — This looks a lot nicer. I have however just looked at pictures of GMK's colour chips and pink 3C looks a fair bit less red than how it appears in the renders, which is putting me off slightly.

Thank you! Please keep in mind many factors affect what you are personally seeing on your own screen, after googling an image. If there are egregious differences, will be sure to try and fix. Otherwise, it's a stock color, so there is no matching process or anything, if you've seen 3C in person, that is what you'll get.

Thank you! I had a 40's / ortho kit separate, but felt like I was going overboard with kits. My issue with making it a separate kit is having vendors buy out to moq, and then potentially sitting on stock that doesn't sell too well, which is why I put some basic 40's support in the base, (Although I understand your point about it not covering everything), while something like a Planck can be covered, but you'd have to buy a few kits. Will keep it in mind for sure and see how things develop.

Probably more my fault for not explaining a little better, than you missing something . I feel like the highlight kit acts as the accents, and not sure I'd like to add keys like esc, enter and arrows, for now, but that I'm also not completely against the idea, pending further development with the kits.

Right. We see a lot of these courtesy calls in the MK communities lately. Exactly. Not extending the olive branch and at least making the effort might see your product being blackballed by the community. As well as continuing after the originator said no. But it's not like anyone is going to court.

At the end of Olivia++ GB, vendors purchased more than 1000 base kits or so people believe, you can check the graph in gb thread.

I thought about adding a couple more words to text novelties, like Neko, or something along the lines of what you were thinking, but didn't really feel like it was a good fit to the rest of the stuff, or would have had to expand a little more to make it fit, like adding subs, and that didn't feel right either. Rather leave the set clean, easy, and more generally relatable to cats, their memes, and stuff they do.

I'm glad you didn't add sublegends to this set. It feels a lot better, especially with the theme you're going for. Excited for this~

Thanks! A little feedback about your comments. This set is not trying to do what Olivia++ might have, or have not done. Different sets, different colors more or less, (stock pink on stock grey here, to custom pink on custom black with Olivia++), different themes, different designers.

It would be lovely to include any and all compatibility for all users (as we are all mechanical keyboard enthusiasts here), this is not a likely scenario though with a manufacturer like GMK. Sets with huge hype and huge sales have trouble with international kits meeting MOQ. So while not against it, not confident that kit can happen here.

Tbh it depends on whether it increases price significantly.

I'd buy the kit with a lot of paws and all the mlems and boops if the price difference isn't huge.

Umbra and Pegaso(?) both had abbreviated ortho support in the base kit, by using "nonspecific" text legends like "data" and "out". Since those legends are meaningless anyway they're almost novelties, but might work for those that really hate cat memes.

Its certainly cheaper than Ortho/40s kits that have 2 tabs, 4 1u escapes and 4 1u enters, (but sometimes only one 1u backspace and 1u shift anyway:(), but doesn't do much for nonortho 40s.

I agree, I love that the main features are around the corners, which actually can be seen (which goes into my tangent gripe with keyboards that put all their design efforts on the brass bottom-side...)
I like both a lot, but I dunno how I feel about the top one's row of 4 paws... Not exactly sold on that execution, but I don't have any good alternative suggestions. Maybe just one giant paw? Or could steal a leaf out of previous patterned deskmats, where you have multiple grey silhouettes of a basic pattern, and a coloured one as accent. I dunno.

I already have a zomo black kitty paw keycap that would fit perfectly as an artisan accent with this set.

I was already thinking of getting GMK Blink black kit... (this is much more muted/calm). How much do I like cats vs kpop…

Thank you for the feedback! Although I do very much like PBT, a little weary about it in general; concerning consistency (specially reverse sub), bowing and warping. We have also yet to see a KAT set delivered (other than BoW), and I have yet to try the profile. All anxiously waiting.

Something dark grey might be a little better suited to match imho, but a black and pink kitty paw will not look bad.

I've reached out to some artisan makers for collabs. Some seem to be interested. Will see if we can make anything happen.

Appreciate the suggestion, and quite like the idea, thanks! My thought was more along the lines of being able to use the mat with no top or bottom and being able to flip it. Giving it a little more direction as you are suggesting is a good idea. Will try to see what I can do about it, if it looks good, I don't mind.

I second the idea of two columns of unidirectional paws up one way, then down the other way for neighbouring two columns, to imitate footprints (whilst also meaning the pad can still be flappable).

First, thank you! There was some seriously overwhelming support and love showed here and in the IC form, you lot are awesome!

I do not have confirmed dates yet, but we have a little time before this happens.

Figured I would attempt to clean up and direct the kitting a little more, gather your feedback, and get a feel for how to progress.

Also some Q&A from the IC form feedback that's been gathered so far.

Alt Alpha kit subs / color. Numpad subs More accents?
Not my intention for this set. Keeping it clean and consistent. I feel there is enough accent options, they are accents, shouldn't really be that many.

International Kit?
Only really had like 5 - 6 requests in IC form, so unlikely for the moment (not final no though).

I don't like the novelties, the don't speak to me.
You are not forced into any novelties for this set. 

How about some more novelties like yarn, toys, collars, less words?
Not my intention for this set, I kind of feel that would take things in a cosplay kind of direction O.O

More words, less design.
Added a couple more options, as I like these, feel they would fit in where mod keys are supposed to be and not look out of place like icons do in comparison.

Few requests to separate numpad from base.
I don't think that's right direction, would like to keep it in, as it's kind of an all-inclusive kit atm.

I understand. I am currently not an Ortho or 40's user. Kits are not final at the moment, but I like the current structure. Will see how things go by quotation times, the set being stock colors though, should mean a beefy base kit like this, should rival or be very close to current base kit prices.

But I'd argue that most ortho users actually want a R2 1u Tab and a R3 1u Esc rather than the other way around.

You could even get away without a R2/3 Esc as the Read novelty would work fine for most ortho peeps instead.
