I think a lot of us have to support legacy systems, well I do which is why I haven't switched to win8 yet. I am sure most of it will work, but I feel like I just got everything working good lol.

I'd have to agree that Modern UI is extremely frustrating on a desktop, but overall Win 8 offers a lot of improvements and I like it. As you probably saw above I use Arch as my main OS, so I'm not a hardcore Windows user. I installed it on my fiancée's computer (she is not an advanced user) and she seems happy with it and hasn't had any problems with the UI changes. Steam runs great, and from my benchmarks overall it's faster than Win 7 which is why I kept it.

I only know of 2 people who are in Win8 and for the most part all of their software works, granted it isn't like a corporate environment, and it's mostly newer software.  Some stuff for my buddy who's a digital forensics major doesn't really work like FTK, it doesn't process data very well, but other than that since it's so similar to windows 7 lots of stuff works, unlike the jump from xp to vista... I'm only rocking 7 for now because I don't wanna bother spending $40 when windows 7 works fine and is fast enough.

My desktop, super simple, I really enjoy the mac look of nothing on the desktop other than a background, and then all the programs I need on a bar at the bottom.  Also I never go to my desktop so it doesn't make sense to view anything on there or have anything fun installed like rainmeter. Also the background is Outworld Destroyer from Dota2, and if anybody's interested I have a whole high res image pack that I got from /r/dota2 with high res images of most if not all the TI2 hero pool.

I gave up on my old linux config, was fun to totally customize it but I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
The only thing 'custom' now is I just removed all the stuff that makes ubuntu suck and hacked up an existing metacity theme
