About the set |
For many of us, the rain has a strong influence on how we think and feel. Each person can feel something profoundly
different than the other; Relaxation, a clear mind, subtle sadness, dramatic nostalgia, or utter hopelessness. GMK Rainy Days
is a dedication to these feelings. I wanted to design a set that not only had a theme, but a strong and dramatic mood and atmosphere.
My inspiration for this set comes from two main sources. The rain, of course, and brutalist/oppressive architecture and the
dramatic role it plays in how we interpret and reflect. The stark presence of raw or bare material making up the world we live in.
From buildings to bridges to the streetlights that are always watching us. I have always felt like props stand out as monoliths when
we find ourselves engulfed by the cool overcast air, thinking about a memory, a loved one, or the uncertainty of the future.

9/28/2020 - GB slated for October 6th. SwiftCables collaboration. I have the cable renders in hand but waiting to post them until I get a green light from SwiftCables. I think it should be perfectly feasible to add ISO support as most sets do these days. Not sure if it will go in the base kit or as an extra kit yet though. But you can expect it either way.

It rains a lot where I live. I love this set and your colors are spot on, please don't change them! That blue is perfect. I would definitely buy and orthos set and novelties. I love the raindrop novelties and support the addition of cloud novelties. Gimme a banner so I can add it to my posts!

GMK does better matching to RAL, have you looked into RAL matching the colors over Pantone? Overall I like the look of the set.
I did look at RAL and found that they were way off to my original colors. I am not sure if there is a way to get a custom color made in matched RAL form though.

The professional renders are coming soon. I am reaching out to several people still and working with their schedules and pricing but they are on the way.
The novelties are still a work in progress and are not final. I feel like a vast majority of you had a lot of positive things to say about the colors and the kits but the novelties still need that polish to ensure that they provide their own weight of thematic support for the set. So I will hold off on rendering those until I feel like I have a final revision for the novelties that I and the community are really excited about. There is a good chance that I may make quite a few more and create a poll to decide what direction the novelty kit goes.

I really like these colours and the tone, a set like this has some real potential to become a hit. But there are some niggles.

- The miss-match in the KLE to the render is quite bad, and shouldn't happen. People are going to get confused are will make more work for you than needed.
- Please consider putting full UK ISO in there. For the sake of 3 more 1u keys, the UK crowd would be grateful if you did.
- Getting good renders done early would have complete this IC more for me and given much more creative room to show off the set (and novelties). I understand that you are getting them done but this IC could have carried so much weight and attention with them right of the gate.

Thank you so much for your honest feedback. I have updated the IC and polished it a bit more to avoid that confusion. I also do intend to have full UK ISO support. it's not in the current base kit render, as I have not yet decided if it will be in the base kit or a separate kit. But it will be there either way.

Glad you like it! to answer your question, no it was not intentionally done that way. I sort of just screencapped keys from KLE and drew on them. I intend to update them to be like actual images as no other parts of the set have pixel themes to them.

Excited for deskmats for sure, I have too many kits already so I've resorted to buying mats or novelties from kits that I really like and this could be the next one hahaha

This is not intentional. One of the pairs should have bumps. There have been a few hiccups/inconsistencies with the render service I am using. It's an awesome service and I highly recommend it but I will still be looking to a render specialist for more finalized renders.
To address everyone else. Thank you so much for the support and enthusiasm towards the set. I am still working on finalizing the polished versions of the novelties and getting them and the rest rendered by an artist so that it is all consistent and a little more polished looking.
The google forms help out a lot so and I have gotten some great feedback and insight from them which helps me keep the focus of the set. Thank you for filling those out.

That is correct they will be properly convex just like any other GMK set. That representation is another limitation of the render service that I used. I am still looking for someone to do all of my renders so that they are more polished and hope to have those added ASAP to relieve some of the confusion that my current renders are causing. Right now most of the people I want to hire are booked or are on vacation so I don't have an estimated ETA on arrival for those renders.

Hey there, not sure if this has been mentioned before, but consider dropping the R1 1u mod-colored \|, it isn't really necessary (the alpha-colored one is sufficient). Furthermore, you could also drop the numpad 00 key, since you don't see it used very often nowadays (except as an Alice B replacement, but you already have that covered).
Also, please consider adding R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn for us 65% and 75% users. I think HHKB users would also appreciate the addition of a R3 1.75u Control key.
Some legend suggestions: use Control instead of Ctrl, System/Sys or Super instead of Win, and Fn instead of Menu. You can change Num↲Lock to Num, Scroll↲Lock to Scroll, and Caps↲Lock (stepped) to Caps if you want all of the legends in the set to be single-line; it might look cleaner this way.

The latter should stay in the kit of course, but the R1 1u isn't needed because if you're using split Backspace and want a mod-colored cap in the top-right corner, you're going to use `~ (at least that's what most people do).

Ah I see. Yeah you make a good point. I will probably take that out then unless a majority want that in (sounds like most people wont). I would like to keep the kits as condensed as possible to make the price accessible while still offering as much support as possible. As heads up, this goes for the novelties as well. I have taken out a few of the ones that felt "redundant" and left just a few to make it easier for people to get that one or 2 novelties that they want without paying a small fortune for just a few keys. I think most people would like to just accent their keyboard with novelties instead of having one for every slot. I will be working with my render artist as well to discuss further possible changes to the base kit as they have a lot of experience with kitting. Thank you for your valuable feedback.
And yes I will add that control key for the HHKB users out there. Shouldn't be a problem. I may end up putting a KLE up with the To-Date changes until those final renders come
Also the Won key will also be in the Hangul kit. I will go ahead and update the IC with a KLE that represents that I think

Suggestion for desk mat: A minimal black background with some concentric circles of different thickness in your color palette to indicate ripples from raindrops.
I think you are right on that. The streetlight and concrete ones, based on the google form, were very popular. Not sure if I will be able to run a third but if I can I will certainly mock up this idea and run it as I had thought about it before. I think I will just use the bridges for the box art as they weren't super popular at all as desk mats.

But those colors are going to be extremely hard to match in plastic. Especially in Pantone since GMK only does RAL (european standard).
Also as much as I love those novelties, it won't be possible to make them the way they look now.
GMK has a limit on how fine lines are allowed to be and those are definitely too detailed.
You have to keep in mind that the legend has to be CNC machined into a metal mold.

Double checking to make sure I'm not just blind but this kit doesn't have a 1U spacebar in any of it's kits correct? Not a big deal since I can just use a novelty key in place of it either way. Excited for the GB and US vendor announcement.
that's correct. There is no 1U spacebar.

Oh no worries lol. Yeah no 1U shift either but you could use the 1U Fn key from the base kit or the 1U umbrella from the novelties.

Is it just me or did the colors completely change from the previous renders?
Same exact Pantones were used in both render versions. Admittedly, the first service was very "budget" and lacked more robust lighting. They also had a darker background which can make a big difference but comparing them side by side and taking into account lighting, they are pretty much the same.

You have to keep in mind that for doubleshot keycaps every legend and symbol has to be CNC machined for the mold.
GMK has a minimum line width that they can machine and iirc that is around 0.8mm.
And from what I can tell the powerlines on those novelties are much much smaller than that.

yeah I went over this with my render artist when I was finalizing the SVG's. Everything checked out as far as dimensions. The powerlines are 0.85mm thick and the bridge rails are 1.5mm thick. Abec is pretty particular and detail oriented about these sort of things and didn't see any issues but I will follow up with him and see if any modifications need to be done to ensure proper production.

But, I built it around this set thinking it was going live today. When can we expect it to go live? I know I won't see the caps in hand for a long time, and I've got some temporary ones until then. Awesome! I'm just glad that it is in the works. Upon scrolling through looking for the look that I want in my first full build, this set kept standing out to me. So after a few times, I checked out the thread here and after reading the story behind it I am even more into it! I, like most people, thoroughly enjoy the emotions that I feel on a rainy day. If they are final, but the runner still wants to include second B, the R3 1u \| key can be changed to R4 1u B without losing anything and without affecting quotes or pricing, it just will need to be communicated to GMK. renderman will be done with the updated changes to the kits soon. He said he was working on them tomorrow so we may have them as soon as tomorrow. We are still on track for September 29th GB date. Should be getting the prices back soon as well. Haven't heard about the cables and artisans yet from CandyKeys. I will check in on them to see if there is an update.

This set is so clean and pretty. I really love the hangul kit, but kind of sad that I have to pick up the base kit also, resulting in a waste of latin alphas. Is there any chance that we could get a hangul base kit, similar to GMK Yuru? I understand that its already close to GB date and it will be hard to implement, but I think some others would appreciate it also.

I agree with you. Having another base kit for hangul would have been ideal but it was sort of a tough decision that I didn't have a whole lot of experience making. On one hand, yes, it's a waste of alphas having to get the base kit and a hangul kit which results in spending more money for less efficiency. On the other hand, a hangul base kit would still have been more expensive than a regular base kit and I was worried that, because this is my first set, getting MOQ on both of those Base Kits would have been very difficult, possibly resulting in a hangul base kit not getting made which would be a disservice since one of my goals for this set was to serve a clean, themed set to those who want hangul. In the future, once I have a better grasp on what interest translates to in terms of MOQ and what vendors are willing to purchase on top of that, I would definitely like to find ways to get niche language kits to the community in a more efficient and cost effective way.

FWIW, I think your line of thinking was super reasonable. I definitely would have been in the audience that would have been super bummed if the MOQ meant that the hangul set simply didn't get made. Hindsight is 20/20 but given the rationale, I'm happy you made the call that you did, even if it ends up being a bit more out of pocket for me-- but I'm so in love w/ the design of this, that it's a cost I'm more than happy to bear.

The GB date has been moved to October 6th. The contact for quotes at GMK was sick last week and I also needed to create granular specification sheets to give to GMK that included all the rows, units, ect. (I didn't know this was needed so this happened last minute.) Our current goal is to start the GB on the 6th of October! Everything is already lined up to achieve this goal, it was really just the quotes that set us back. Rest assured, as soon as we get those quotes, we are going live!
As for some of the changes that have happened last minute...
Cables:
We are working with SwiftCables to bring you Rainy Day aviator cables! They have already provided me with some renders and product shots and they look fantastic! I have not added them to this IC yet as I want the information on here to be formal and vetted through everyone first. But you can check them out on the Discord!
Artisans:
Little bit of bitter sweet here. Artisans will not be made for the GB launch. We just couldn't get something together based on what me and the vendor discussed. HOWEVER, the good news is, Artisans WILL be coming in the future! We are planning to get them going a few months after the GB for the keycaps. And I think this is actually beneficial. For one, it will space out the financial commitment for my customers who want to get all the bells and whistles, giving you a few months to budget for those pricey artisans. It may also bring the artisan and keycap set shipping dates closer together since GMK is a couple months behind anyway. So I think this is a net positive for us and you guys!
Novelties:
As I said before, you all pointed out that there were some concerns with GMK manufacturing and my novelties. And you were right! I was convinced otherwise and that created more work and time constraints for the GB as well so I apologize for that. I have reworked the ones that needed to be reworked and vetted it with the lead vendor, Kono, and we are back on track. As I mentioned before, they only changed slightly.
I wanted to thank you all for your support and patience through this roller coaster ride. I know that some of these last minute updates and expectations were really jarring. A lot of this falls on me as I learn how to navigate a group-buy for the first time and all the details and work that go into it. I am absorbing a lot of experience and knowledge from all of this so that every design and customer experience is better than the last. I can't thank you enough for your unyielding support for this project and the kind and constructive feedback that you have all given me.
