My Servers r Here !! Halp, I n00ber at this

Both servers arrived today, Proliant G5

4x intel x7460 150GB Ram

and

4x intel x7460 120GB Ram

How do I get molex power on this thing for say a graphics card..

I can probably split it from the single molex out , but I have no idea how many amps that's rated for..


I may be able to pull it from the second drive power out, but that requires splicing up my own SAS-power-cable..

And honestly..  nothing's labeled on this thing... ... 

Is, DIY power supply the only way to go ?

Guys, why is P400 raid controller only like $20, but the newer P411  $400

That makes no sense.. they're nearly identical on the spec sheet.

wait, nm.. I read it wrong.. says 6gb sas vs 3gb sas.. the 3gb sata connection is the same..


I don't see how 6gb sas is worth 20x the cost.. considering the whole connection is still limited by the 2.5Gb/s PCIE x8,

they both route to 8 drives.   so even if the 411 has the 6gb sas,  it can't take that rate from all drives simultaneously.

So.. This got 4x redundant PSU @ 900 watt output each..

And I can pretty much hit 850watt from the wall @ full CPU load... it says I can pull max 1034watt from the wall, it's 87% efficient..

Does that Mean.. I still have  (1- (850/1034)) * 900 = 160watts  left over to power other things ?


What is the maximum low wattage Graphics card I can put into this.. because the interface is kind of slow when I use a larger monitor..    I'm not playing games, I just want to see my stuff on a bigger screen.. and perhaps get opengl accel

Or can I pull like another 900watts. because i mean, it's got 4 of these things..


NM, says in manual.. 2+2 redundant.. so I can pull 1800 @ 2070 from the wall.. I guess this is going in the garage if I ever need 17.23amps

Best bet would probably to get a light weight GPU that dosen't need additional pci-e power like a quadro FX1800. It's still a good enough card for workstation use and can be had for cheap. Or cheap low end cards like nvidia GT *20 or some such.
As far as SAS controller... most of the older 3GBPS have 2TB disk limit which is why they are so much cheaper now days used. Too many people want to build larger storage than that without using piles of drives and less drives in an array is usually a good thing.

I've considered using a less powerful card.. but my last no-cable card is already being used.. 

I only have available an ati5870, ati4890 and an nv 560ti , LOLOL...



But I may also require power for other things in the future, which is why I'd like to divert it from somewhere..

If it were me, I would consider pulling the boards and etc and putting them in smaller desktop style pedestal cases with 'normal' PSU... and getting whatever you can out of those rack cases and server PSU. Maybe do so one at a time so the cost doesn't get stupid.

Um... these boards are HUGE and there are MANY, they're pretty much specifically designed for this chassis..

and It's not exactly a standard ATX 24 pin we're talkin here. LOL, everything is proprietary, I'm trying to break that yes..  buhhh.. there's a limit, before the motherboard's built in diagnostic will go.. Fff you, what are you doing to me.. I'm not turning on..

LOL n00....  this is not n00b gear... just N00b owner..

the board you can see is just the expansion board,  the vertical board is a daughter board for video/ usb/ storage array/ and ethernet

the 4x cpu and ram is all Under the front of the chassis..  on yet, another board.

So far can't seem to find the pin-outs, but a cheap multimeter can fix that in like 5min.
As for the GPU its a ****ing server, you don't need no stinking GUI.

well,, it has 24 cores.. so I could run server stuff, while I edit videos,  and I'd need a gpu for that..

but that's not the only thing..   there's other things I might want to power..

GPU can do more than render pixels. There is lots of CUDA or OpenCL stuff these days... though if you're going that way loads of CPU power is usually not so needed as generally it's replaced by GPU.
Though you don't really need a GPU unless you are going to use it to multitask something where you can offload to GPU. Just need to use software that you can do send work to server, or just rdp and run applications that way instead.

I plan to get some GOOD storage later to use the FC.. but not right now..  For now I'd just throw some consumer sata ssds in there on an old rocket raid card because i have so many laying around

But I don't think the onboard array supports TRIM, so I'll probably have to cough up the $300 later for the new HP-raid-card.. LOLOL


BTW Ivan.. how did you find that gpu power supply..  I don't see any other ones listed on newegg..  and couldn't search for it.

I have one and it works well enough and has good speeds very close to native intel for SSD. There are some cool cards that have 4x msata too which are really nice to set up to be used for journaling in storage spaces with parity sets.

I hadn't realized they had made pcie msata controllers..  This makes it much easier if I need to add SSD storage later, I got a bajillion pcie slots afterall.  Server FTW !!
