First, hi I'm Colin, next, where should I announce this firmware project?
(1/1)
colinta:
Been lurking long enough, and I finally have something fun to say, so first here's my introduction! Colin Gray, in Asheville, NC (just moved from Denver, CO).
I first broke away from mainstream keyboards with the TypeMatrix 2030, which I used happily for about 3 or 4 years. But a coworker showed me his keyboard (a JD40 of some sort) and I decided I wanted to have a custom keyboard that implemented some ideas I had (mainly about "Sticky modifier keys").
So I bought an XD75 w/ hotswap sockets, lots of switches, DSA caps (I'm a colemak user, so not as many cap options for me) and wrote custom QMK code (https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/blob/master/keyboards/xd75/keymaps/colinta/keymap.c). I was feeling pretty good about things!
Then I bought a BFO-9000 split keyboard and found that QMK wasn't up to the task; really fast keypresses on the "slave" side would be missed or be out of order, and I couldn't figure out why. So I did the obvious thing: I wrote new firmware! I'm announcing my project, Mechy, on reddit and here, but I'm not sure what forum I should post that in... help?
