Title: [IC] THE CLICK CLOCK
Post by: Firebolt1914 on Thu, 04 February 2016, 10:04:20
I have a rough idea of running a group buy of numitron clocks. I'm not sure if I should make an affordable acrylic case or a really nice aluminum case. I'm planning on having cherry mx switches as buttons although I have to see what sort of modifications I have to make.

I have access to a laser engraver so I can engrave some keyboard related things on the case. Here is an image of the original project done by Sean Voisen.

(https://camo.githubusercontent.com/1bbefde101283f568d1dfd708346968a20cee2db/68747470733a2f2f7261772e6769746875622e636f6d2f77696b692f73766f6973656e2f626c75656e756d692f696d616765732f626c75656e756d695f636c6561722e6a7067)

There most likely will be only 10-15 clocks done in a run.

Very rough estimate of 70 USD per clock. Higher price than I had hoped but not too bad

EDIT:
I am scratching the MX idea as the case is not too compatible with other switches. I don't think it's really possible unless you use wires to connect the switch to the PCB. Even if the case were to be modified, the parts are at the same level as the switches.

NEWEST EDIT 12/22/2016
NOW TO BE IN VFD FORM!

VFDs are different than the previously proposed Numitrons as they are not filaments, but instead are based on cathodoluminescene.

(http://i.imgur.com/s2W3KTc.png) VS (http://i.imgur.com/81JLbJR.png)

Right now, once the maker of the PCB (www.nixieclock.org (http://www.nixieclock.org)) responds to me, I will begin to make a case. I have still not decided between acrylic or aluminum. Aluminum will be more expensive, however I believe it will look the nicest with this type of vacuum tube. Please let me know so I can begin ASAP. I will post a rough approximation of what I want the aluminum case to look like soon.

You said you wanted to use Cherry MX switches as buttons. How would that work? I don't see where the buttons would be.

The important part of this possible clock is the fact that it uses numitron tubes instead of actual nixies. Niches require around 180VDC which put me off. Numitrons require about 5V, which is much safer and requires less circuitry.

I may want a poll for either acrylic or aluminum case.

Also, what sort of thing would you want laser engraved?

I know, I just like nixies (and not just because my cat is named nixie). Something about their warm glow can't be encapsulated by numis. But I understand the reasoning. IIRC the tubes are similarly priced, but the lower voltage should make the kit as a whole much cheaper. I would guess $75-100 depending on the case?

This looks super cool.

Personally I'd just like my GH username engraved. Or even the the Geekhack logo itself (not sure about permissions around this).

If you did aluminium cases I imagine you could get some pretty detailed images or designs on there.

My bad, I didn't realize numitron was a different thing.  :thumb:  Thanks for clarification.

Engraving should be #, (optional) geekhack, and (optional) username, in no particular order.  At least that's my vote.  It also depends on the intent here, whether you want to make a geekhack clock or just a clock that is sold on geekhack.  :)

My intent was to get a bunch of clocks that are interesting and have some sort of geekhack flair. There will be a custom case, and hopefully it won't be too expensive. If it is too expensive, I will switch to the acrylic case.

Building off what demik just said, it might be fun to let people put etchings of their favorite keyboards on it in the style of the pixel art photos in peoples' sigs?

I have a modern nixie tube clock (as in modern tubes) but the colors are blue instead of that nice orange...

Would love to swap it out and from the pictures it seems they're the same size...

These are numitrons so they run on different voltages. There are many sources online where you can buy nixie tubes. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what size nixie tube you need.

How do these differ from Nixie tube clocks? I'd be interested, but could you make it a 6-tube design instead? That would be more interesting to me to see the seconds.

Numitrons are essentially filaments like in lightbulbs versus discharge of a cathode and gas. I personally chose the numitrons because there was a pre-existing open source project for it and that it uses lower voltages.

I personally want a 6-tube design, however the PCB I chose doesn't really support that, and I don't want to learn how to make changes to a pre-existing PCB or have to make a new one. This would also require rama (or someone else, probably myself) to make edits to the case, and finally, I am going to source the tubes from eBay, so it will be quite annoying to have to get more tubes. HOWEVER, if there is enough interest, I will be fine with doing all of the above.

I've always wanted one of those!!
Me too!
And for 70 dollars it'd be pretty hard to pass up IMO.

I hope so, I'm 100% in for one if it is - would look sick next to all my tube amps.

Probably not, I had some issues with the PCB files, and it's hard for me to fix it myself. Seeing that there is enough interest, there's a slim chance it may happen though.

I'm sure someone could be able to help you? But, i'm still interested as well if you decide to give it a run

ANOTHER REVIVE!

I'm determined to actually finish one of my stupid projects.....

Since there is enough interest, I will definitely try to do this one.

Example of CNC'd aluminum IV-11 Clock

The aluminum looks great, but how much would it cost?  I figured the ~$70 would be for the acrylic one.

If pricing is still reasonable for aluminium then for sure that'd be cooler than acrylic.

Aluminum... but can we keep it simple on the design?  Milled aluminum can get stupid expensive.

I'm very interested in this. Honestly at $70 i'd most likely be in, below $60 or below 100% in, $100 or above definitely out.

Bad news, just the parts alone will cost about 90 dollars. I'm not sure if I will continue to do this project, or just do the project for those that are willing to pay custom keyboard prices for a clock......

i think its a good idea, but theres already things available for much cheaper then the $90 lowest just for parts your saying.

https://www.tindie.com/products/RobG/msp430-nixie-clock-kit/

https://www.tindie.com/products/celzey11/iv-9-numitron-tube-clock-/

https://www.tindie.com/products/mazevedo/nwts-ntp-sync-over-wi-fi-for-nixie-clocks-kit/

Not sure if these would work as well, but yea. Maybe its better to put a group buy in for one of these on the cheap and then do a groupbuy for a better case to house it in and still save some money in the end?

2 of those are for nixie tubes (not what this project is for) and the other is only 4 tube rather than a 6 tube
