Budweiser is really good, the original one in Czech, not the American one. I kind of like the Oktoberfest keycap, but oem profile always ruins it. Why oem CC? Why can't you make a special edition in Cherry? Why?

These puns have gone flat.  '-'

Budweiser is really good, the original one in Czech, not the American one. I kind of like the Oktoberfest keycap, but oem profile always ruins it. Why oem CC? Why can't you make a special edition in Cherry? Why?
Doesn't OEM mean original equipment manufacturer? So if he were selling these in cherry profiles then they would be compatible with cherry OEM keys, right? I think people are confusing the term OEM to mean Filco and Leo. He still makes keys that are more compatible with cherry profiles. At least I think he still does. I never saw them on EK but I have many cherry-like keys from clickclack. The skulls, bunnies (leap, squat, snuggle, flop), ocean, Hi-Tex, etc. I know for a fact though that at the time there was very little demand for those profiles. I think the skulls were all cherry profile originally.

Any way, lovin the "oktoberfest" keys!

cheers
Title: Re: Beer and Candy Corn.
Post by: MMB on Sun, 04 November 2012, 22:04:11
In the keycap world, OEM is a profile. Cherry is another profile. OEM is a bit taller than cherry profile.

Post by: Paddywagon on Sun, 04 November 2012, 22:25:13
Ah, I get it, it's a misnomer.

When we used to say Cherry OEM keys it mean the keys originally provided by Cherry. Must be recently that we switched (haahaa) it up.
That's cool, now I feel back in the loop.

I'm pretty sure putting up all the info and pics early is of benefit to many who would normally miss out. May make it easier for EK to put it all up, too, but may cause some oversales and more work cancelling out orders on the back end.

Calling it "torture" or a "nightmare" is a bit over-dramatic.

Thought I'd give you guys a heads up so you don't use up those 50 million keystrokes on your F5 key. The delay on these is for some final testing of what we hope will be the first "fair" CF sale - the most important point of which is that being on the website in the first 30 seconds of the sale won't help your chances of getting one. Just being on the newsletter should be enough.

Well, the thread is 7 pages long, I'm kind of expecting these keycaps to come delivered in a bed of ambrosia and be accompanied by some holy light, lol.

I'm not knocking them at all, in fact I might buy one or two myself since recent events have made buying a Topre 'board all but out of the question. So I was just wondering if there was more behind it than a sale on these two cap variants.

The Oktoberfest one is a new design.

CC keycaps are very much sought after, and the recent Hack Orange sale sold out in about 3 seconds.

Because this one has been announced in advance by EK everyone is hoping to be able to get one of the keycaps at the original price, rather than waiting for massively inflated prices in auctions or sales later on.

What do you mean cheapen the brand? My two CCs sit in a plastic box just like all my other $3 signature plastics keys. I enjoy them just as much as any other key caps I can put on my keyboard. Making them super rare, and crazy expensive in the after market just makes it more frustrating then it needs to be to acquire and own them. It seems pretty selfish to want to be one of the few lucky to get in on a sale, or privileged being invited to private sales, or custom orders that not just anyone can place. Then again this keyboard and key cap hobby is the most selfish hobby I've ever had, so maybe it just comes with the territory. I hate when things turn into "from the community, but for a few"

CC has put his creative talents to making something fairly unique (first time I have seen a skull quite like this), and found a receptive target market.

There are enough CC skulls (and other Clack Factory keycaps) that those who really want them can obtain one, but they are not off the shelf products that anyone could own.

Thus there is still a certain amount of exclusivity to owning one, especially the rarer ones (army green anyone?).

I don't know about them actually being actually hand carved by actual gnomes, but if they were factory mass-produced they would have much less appeal.

lol I have my doubts about gnomes, especially after playing Half-Life 2 and getting the launch gnome into space achievement.  After lugging that gnome around nearly the whole game, one becomes somewhat leery of gnomic references.

But I'm sure CC's gnomes are the nice sort :)

I spend money on caps like a retard, too (hell, I've got a $160 bid on a julysicle up on ebay right now...)and as such I won't comment on the rest of what you state, but the phrase is "a lot".  Alot is a creature, so what you're saying is an alot made of people will be tempted.

Haha well in his defense at least he's not profiteering. If anything he's losing a lot of money on them. Contributing to the over-valued market prices though, that I can agree with.

Still, I prefer people spending an amount of money they deem appropriate for an item they want over buying a bunch of clacks just to auction/sell. Both issues do relate to each other though.

The point was that if there are people willing to buy CC's at more than original price, then people will sell them at that price. If you are guilty of this, you have no grounds to complain about people selling it at a higher rate. Because you are the root of the problem.

If no one buys 'em at that price, they won't be sold at that price!

Really? Let's not descend into personal attacks. MMB is correct, it appears you don't see how you paying a premium encourages this price gouging. This is simple economics.

If there are people selling you a widget for $1 million, and nobody buys, are they going to keep selling at $1 million? No. So they keep reducing the price until someone decides they will buy the widget. This establishes a value that a buyer will pay for that widget.

Now let's look at CC's. If I'm holding a 3D, and I want to sell for $100. You come over rayuki, and buy my clack for $100. I now know that people will pay $100 for a 3D clack. So I go and buy them at cost ($30) and keep selling them to you because you'll pay at $100. However if you didn't purchase at $100, in fact, if nobody would buy these for anything more that at cost, the price of these caps, aftermarket, would be $30 or even less.

You are helping drive up prices by purchasing high. It is simple as that. If nobody would buy high, then this problem would go away because the gougers wouldn't buy something they couldn't make a quick buck on. I hope I was clear enough.

And please, keep nationalities and personal attacks out of this. Makes you look bad, not MMB.

Cheers,

So I go and buy them at cost ($30) and keep selling them to you because you'll pay at $100. However if you didn't purchase at $100, in fact, if nobody would buy these for anything more that at cost, the price of these caps, aftermarket, would be $30 or even less.

You are helping drive up prices by purchasing high. It is simple as that. If nobody would buy high, then this problem would go away because the gougers wouldn't buy something they couldn't make a quick buck on. I hope I was clear enough.

And please, keep nationalities and personal attacks out of this. Makes you look bad, not MMB.

Cheers,

what is this! WAY TO MANY WORDS BRO for this obviously pointless, troll invested thread.

In a nutshell, basic supply and demand economics with a little plastic mixed in.

Christie’s Auctioneer: This precious Claude Monet water-lily painting sold to bidder #4124 for $43.7 million
Bidder #24569: What the F***? Why can't people just stop driving the price up by buying all these damn Monet paintings?
Christie’s Auctioneer: "Smiles"
Claude Monet from the grave: "Rolls Around"

Trouble is that some people are willing to pay more to get them, if we all waited to get them in sales or in a flash sale at cost then most wouldn't have any at all!

Is it "1. One drawing entry per person." for 1 item or all items?
Title: Re: Beer and Candy Corn.

assuming per item because each drawing page links to the specific key. they have product codes!

One drawing entry per person. Efforts to "game" the system will likely be noticed and disqualified (as will any other entries to other drawings that we can reasonably tie to that person for the foreseeable future.).

I thought this meant you could only enter once and not once per key type.

I think it's for each item.  The disclaimers read as if it's for a specific item number and they'll email an invoice if your name is pulled.

I kinda doubt that.  I can't imagine them assuming that everyone will just be happy getting a CC at all (I won't, I dislike the skulls a bit) and disqualifying multiple entries on multiple items.  I think the gaming thing is if someone makes a bunch of dummy entries for the one key.

My hope is that the reason for the delays is that they coded a randomizer instead of trying to pick out the names themselves.

I shouldn't say hope, it's more of an expectation.  And if that expectation is right, it's about the most fair way they can run things.

your word, not mine. i think you're expecting something that you don't really have any rights to... just enter and if you win, hooray! if not, you'll probably be okay. if there is a medical reason that you MUST have a click clack, mr. clack himself is very understanding and can probably take your biological needs into account. otherwise you don't have any entitlement to anything he makes.

Pretty much this, I can't think of anything else.  Now on the other hand, faceless corporations such as apple don't care about the people that stood in line and didn't get a new iDevice.  Though that's not the best comparison as there's usually more after the first run.

Each keycap has a separate draw.  As I understand it.

It doesn't have to even be associated with flipping keys.

If all I want is the Oktoberfest key in MX and I don't win it, and didn't enter into the raffle for other keys then I get nothing. However if I win the topre version then I can potentially trade for the MX version. Or any other key could potentially be traded for the one key that I want.

If I personally win a key that I don't want I will sell it at cost to someone that has never had a CC, and obviously currently does not have one. I think there are PLENTY of people who meet this category. It took me about six months after joining geekhack to get my first CC, and it was because someone decided to sell me one almost at cost because I didn't have one, so least I can do is pay that mentality forward. I acquired my second CC due to a very kind trade and only have two keys still.

Yes because you can't stop everyone from doing it as well. You know people who only want topre will also be trying for the MX keys just in case. I feel like trading is encouraged with CCs so I don't understand why this is a problem. I guess it is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.

you act like i have a better chance of getting what i want, and then turn around and claim to be registering for all of them to have a better chance at getting ANY click clack regardless of how much you actually want that specific key?
Not at all, but your attitude is very idealistic. It is as if you are ignoring the fact that other CCs besides this sale exist that someone might want.

Also right or wrong I like debates on the internet even if it makes us all retarded hitlers of varying degree. Don't take anything I say personally because I'm just picking a side and running with it. It could even be considered trolling.

ideally we'd all have what we want and we wouldnt be having this discussion :P i see what you mean but if we all stop doing that then it won't be a problem even if there are a couple of bad apples in the bunch. that makes it much clearer to EK and CF what people ACTUALLY want so they can be prepared next time they have a sale.

In a perfect CC market only people with MX keyboards buy MX CCs, and only  people with Topre boards buy Topre CCs. Without verification of what people own though it is near impossible to curb purchasing with the intent of trading. Besides trading, people buy extras only because of the ridiculous and expensive secondary market. If people ideally had a willingness to only pay what they originally cost then no one would buy extras, and no one would mark them up. I personally see trading $18-30 keys for $18-30 keys much more preferable to resale of $18-30 keys in the range of $50-200+ (not sure what the most expensive CC to sell was).

Could you imagine if one person that won the lottery purchased every Topre board from EK and everywhere they could find and then started a new web site "topreboards.com" and sold them at a 50-100% markup? However if something like this happened considerably more Topre boards would be manufactured to meet demand and prices would come down again. When it comes to CCs clack factory is not increasing production or availability or pricing and the aftermarket is insane.

It's only $200 if you bid on all of them.  Or if you proxy and use a different address and paypal account $400.

But then clacks have sold for $500, so wouldn't that be, best case $8000?  Not bad for not a days work.

Because if he really wanted exclusivity, he should 1) raise prices, a lot. 2) produce way less. He's trying to straddle this line where is products are available, but "art". Changing to a lottery to even distribution contradicts this. Really, I think the caps should be $100 base cost if he wants to maintain exclusivity. The whole reason we have gouging is because the "msrp" of these caps is max $50, but generally $20-$30. If CF tripled that, the cost would meet the percieved value, and then the gougers wouldn't have much motivation because the amount of profit would be minimal to none.

The other option is to increase production. This would allow prices to drop. If he wants to maintain exclusivity, he should go the trading card route. Make commons, uncommons, rares, and just have people trade them or whatnot.

Regardless, I think that CF is missing out on a huge amount of capital that should be going his way instead of these gougers.

Cheers,

I think that if they started at a higher price then the second hand price would also increase so that wouldn't entirely solve the issue.

I'm happy with the existing system, they are clickclacks creation and he is obviously happy with the current price and production number, if he wasn't then he would change it.

It's simple Geekhack economics.  We all want CCs.  But we can't all have CCs, so that's why they have such a high resale value.

Both points are valid. I guess I would just hope for a little more transparency in matters such as this. I understand them leaving it to the luck of the draw, but if a persons' entries win across the board, limiting them in a system that you set up is wrong to me unless it was stated prior to the start.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. There is a manufacturers value of a CC. between $20 and $30 (vader excluded). currently, the GH value is somewhere between $60-$100+ dollars. People won't pay much more than that, because if they would, then the prices would have gone much higher in the auctions.

Therefore, I still think a 300% increase in the cost of a CC would greatly reduce the amount of gouging.

Cheers,

That's why Clack sales always sell out so fast.  Usually with low supply and high demand, prices are sky high.  But ClickClack chooses to sell well below the market clearing price ($20-$30), so his sales generally don't last long.  But after we buy them, we can choose to sell them at the market clearing price ($60-$100) because that's what people are willing to pay.

The fact of the matter is they already are mass produced. The ORIGINAL carved by hand skull was the art, everyone single gnome that pulls one of these out of a mold is the mass production. He should sell hand carved where each key is unique for $80-200, and he KNOWS people would buy them. Then sell the keys from a mold at the same prices as today but produce more of them to meet demand. What would be so bad about making everyone happy? The art people get their art, the collectors can have tons of CC skulls at more reasonable prices. This is how real art works.

I purchased a bad-ass Boba Fett painting for almost $900 painted by Mike Maydak because I wanted the original. I could have paid around $65 for the giclee and mostly been just as happy. Art is always sold as originals and "prints", where the prints will keep being produced and sold as long as people want to buy them, not "omg wtf bbq better buy this one of 20 prints". Okay maybe there are some rare situations where an artist will do only a couple prints however they are normally marked up when in limited batches. Artists gotta eat and if you ask for another print not in the original 20 prints they will do it nine times out of ten, you just won't get the (N out of 20) written on it somewhere.

Calling each of clack factories skulls art doesn't change the fact that it comes from a mold. Maybe I'm wrong maybe he and the gnomes do hand carve every skull and 'sicle' style key...

There isn't a new carving for each run so there is only really one true original. They are all produced in molds but if you read what CC says then you will see that he considers each one to be a little piece of art and I agree with him.

It would ruin CC caps if they were mass produced, the scarcity and fun of finding one is part of the reason that I like them so much.

Hey masochism isn't for everyone, good for you!

Just to make sure no panties get in a bunch this is the definition of masochistic I'm referring to: A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences

Don't get me started on "considering" things to be art. I know Clack Factory will probably see this and add me to the some secret gnome black list. I've never been invited to a dibs sale, and he replied to an email of mine once, but not the follow up where I asked a question about a custom order, so I really don't think I'm losing out on anything by being honest.

It's not masochism, it's about enjoying the chase. Masochism implies that most would find the situation uncomfortable and that is not what you should feel when trying to buy caps.

So how would you have key cap : keyboard sales work?

The situation is very uncomfortable or there would not be pages upon pages of threads over these keys like there are. How does one become an "important member" to be privileged enough to get an invite to a dibs sale? Why should someone have to be placed into a raffle to have a chance to buy something? Why is buying extras to trade for different caps frowned upon? Then buying extras to sell for profit is even more frowned upon. Some people get upset with those who have keys showing them off to people that don't have any, and can't seem to get them. SO MUCH is uncomfortable in the attempts to buy/trade/sell CCs. From my experiences it feels like some kind of cruel sick joke. I would like to feel the same way I do as other caps "Oh hey this thing is for sale I'm excited, click buy or send a PM, and a couple days/weeks/months later it arrives"

I think for the most part keyboard sales work fine. Someone wants to buy it, it is in stock and you get it. Stock runs out the manufacturer wants to make money so they actually make more and the cycle continues. This even happens with the majority of key caps which is why we saw a second run of red alert, and there will probably be another CCnG run, and Portal 2.0 and all the popular items that second batches have been made. I think I described my personal ideal clack factory selling method with the Originals and "prints" ideology. People want to buy something you sell it to them, unless it is just not possible to meet the demand. It is always possible though to create more molds from the original so you can make 4 keys at a time instead of 2 or 1. Scaling production is always an option.

Honestly what would be so bad if everyone could buy every CC color they wanted? Some people wouldn't feel they are a beautiful and unique snowflake?

I'm pretty sure the last two dibs sales were for people who didn't PM or email fast enough on the last two open sales. There wasn't enough product at the time of the 4grabs so the leftovers (in order of email/pm received) were given the opportunity to buy in on the next round first. Seemed very fair to me, and, no, I didn't get in on any of them.

I wouldn't know about any sales previous to those as I was not an active member before dibs 4, 5 and 6 (6 being the assumed hack orange leftover people in order of email received).

Nothing is wrong with that. That's why those things cost several hundred dollars and more (any custom basically). Everyone would want a KMAC really bad if they periodically went on sale for $50. And then you'd have people flipping them for $100 or more.

CC's should increase price to real value. Not MSRP. Then the problem of flipping will go away.

Honestly what would be so bad if everyone could buy every CC color they wanted? Some people wouldn't feel they are a beautiful and unique snowflake?
That's exactly right. There are so many things in this world of keyboards that are produced in large quantities, why can't there just be some that aren't? Some that are more unique and harder to obtain?

Because people get butthurt when they can't get everything immediately and on their own terms.

Any particular reason why you posted that three times?

There are also a lot of people in this community that can't justify paying $60+ for 1 clickclack. If the sale price was raised to that amount, I'm sure there are a lot of people here that would probably never own one.. myself included.

That's all I have to add :) I've already signed up to this draw!

I never have, and never will pay more than $30 for a CC. I'm just not one of those people with disposable income that I can throw money at the things I want. Good for people that can, but they make the secondary market for clacks ridiculous and impossible for many.

The idea is these items are exclusive. Exclusive things aren't cheap, in general because many hold them valuable. CF is only shortchanging himself by selling low. Honestly, I'm past blaming the gougers. The caps clearly are actually worth more than they are being initially sold for. The only way to stop the gouging without increasing production, from my perspective, is to simply increase the cost. You might not think a CC is worth $60, but at the current market state, you are undervaluing CCs greatly.

I'm not trying to hate on anyone in the community, and am not saying this is the right way (I think production should be increased greatly, with "collector's" editions being available for people who want to feel special). What I really want is CF to actually get the money he deserves as the artist, as opposed to these gougers who clearly only see dollar signs and only want to exploit members of this community. They may be scum, but I understand why they are doing what they are.

Cheers,
