im going to say that this mania produced thread was actually a contribution by tp4 for once to the keyboard part of geekhack, as crazy as it is, so i will deduct 10 sins from tp4

i still want proof you own a ergodox, or even own a mechanical keyboard, i was drunk years back and looked into past posts by tp4 and i remember the only proof i found was you joined a feng group buy for some pbt set i think. i swear, whatever, make more of these and less bs posts.

technically if you count it up,  it's either one, because key load is about even between left and right..

HOWEVER,  in practice,  I'd still say -the right- because of where the shift key is on a regular keyboard.

On the regular keyboard, because all shifting is generally done on the left, due to the right shift being too far away, the only way to make up some time would be to add things to the right.

I just notice this one YouTuber with 170+ WPM -- he doesn't use his pinkies that much in the traditional touch type way. And it seems that he's not the only fast typists doing it.
What do you think?

OVERALL,  when I use Q or P on standard qwerty,  I do not use my pinky for those keys, because they're easier to reach using  Ring finger.

As far as letter frequency goes,  - A - is the only common letter that would be affected by not using the Pinky on qwerty.

- P - on the right hand isn't that common,  so it should not affect speed much..

For me personally though, I've moved -P- to where my -:- colon sign is, because the colon is less common than a letter..

What if I need thumb fingernails for pushing Palm Centro buttons? Those are so small you need to use fingernails too.

Personally, for my qwerty layout, i use my right pointer finger.  I also use the right pointer finger to type sentences once in a while.

This is my typing speed over the years. I am noticing that myself, Sintpinty is getting faster but i don't want to reach a peak level for my typing speed.

To be honest, finding a good keyboard is what got me here anyways. Because i was a fast typist(am still today, but suffering from accuracy issues) , i needed a good quality keyboard that would be reliable and durable. I noticed people like Sifo and others were using mechanical keyboards when typing and they got extremely high scores.

I literally practiced every single day for four years in order to get the speed that i am today.
My highest , 123 wpm is not achieved on a mechanical keyboard, but rather a cheap dell keyboard.

I don't get as higher scores on Mechanical keyboards as much as Membrane keyboards simply because i am not used to the feel of typing on it.

I have a new idea for compendium: Make sure you don't have RSI. If you have RSI, you can definitely make this problem even worse by typing at all, more with your suggestions.

due to this thread I will still work on improving my typing every evening (have been doing this for the past few months).    So far I can say working with lubed Gat Black Inks has aided in increase in my speed and accuracy (imo) could just be in my head but yeah I'll stick with it.

And the OP is a nut, but even nuts have good information from time to time, lol.

I used be able to type like holy hell back in the early message board era but it feels a bit odd to write page long screeds on social media where most people are responding on phones with bullet point thoughts. There aren't many opportunities for me to practice or even think in a long form manner these days, because you can't really type faster than you think, unless we're talking about transcribing.

The real trick to increasing speed is ditching qwerty and using something efficient like dvorak.  ^-^

Don't go there.. please Quinn.... LOL....

sigh...

The Dvorak improvements have not been rigorously tested.. I've got my hopes set on that new guy with his new key analysis thingie in ergonomics forum..

But overall.. Pushing WPM speed is like opening the Eight-Gates, in Naruto..

Gate of Opening 開門:  This is where the user develops basic muscle memory of keys.

Gate of Healing 休門: This is where the user learns adaptive pacing and fast corrections.

Gate of Life 生門: This is where the user begins to forget everything else and focus concentration on transcription and decoding the information in front of him.

Gate of Pain 傷門: this is where the user overcomes the slight mental discomfort when employing such intense focus..

Gate of Limit 杜門:  this is where the user overcomes all technical limits by initiating high level techniques from advanced and advanced +

Gate of View 景門:  I don't think I've achieved this myself, it is definitely beyond the 135wpm barrier... Linkbane has achieved this gate to my knowledge... if only ya'll didn't ban him... he could tell us about it.

Gate of Wonder 驚門: To my knowledge only about 10 people has achieved this.. Sean Wrona being one of them..

Gate of Death 死門: No one has died yet..  But it has been posited that 500WPM is possible when this final gate is breached... No one has done it.. if they have, they did not live to tell about it..  Some genius sacrificed himself in commitment or in err, we may never know..

I know this is super old, and probably no one will reply, but I'm in a slump. I switched over to colemak about 4 months ago, and progress was really fast, and I am now typing at about 70 WPM on average. But that is where it stopped. I have been practicing rigorously throughout the last month and my WPM has changed by maybe 5? Is there any really big thing that you need to think about to "ascend" to the next level? Maybe the "Burst Memory" will help me. I too play the piano and I know what you mean by it, but I feel like sometimes my fingers just aren't confident about a word and then I make a typing error. I am in the process of building a mech, so maybe the tactility and/or clickiness will help, but I really don't know.

My speed before colemak was less, probably around 50-60 WPM though I never took a typing test. And I tried all sorts of membrane keyboards, from a chromebook to a lenovo laptop keyboard, but I have yet to type on a mechanical keyboard so far. I am building one though, so that might help.

Lenovo butterfly is the easiest to time when it comes to typing speed/ repetition.  The mechanical won't impact your performance mechanically, but it may serve as psychological motivation to push you into the next lvl.

Ok, so that's something, but I was wondering if there was some major thing that I am missing that will help get me to that 100 WPM mark(that is my goal for the next couple weeks or so).

Read the text, type it, don't try to comprehend it in any way, saves processing power, move faster.

About that. I noticed that I am alot faster when I am writing the text out of my brain rather than trying to replicate text off of, let's say, a typing test. Could this have something to do with the fact that you have to read the text or is it just normal? Also, I know that there isn't much to say about technique here since I can't really describe the way that my fingers move when typing, but after reading your original post, I was slightly confused by the fact that typing isn't all a string of text but rather, has a rhythm. Can you describe how you would move your fingers to a rhythm when typing?

i read a lot slower than my fingers can move, most of my mistakes are because i misread a word or inserted a word that wasn't actually there.

to the latter point try using a metronome while doing a test, just like practicing music or something, gradually increase the BPM starting from slow to fast. good way to practice rhythm typing. eventually it becoems second nature and you have an internal BPM that works for you. my preferred bpm is 173 for reference

Ok, that metronome idea sounds like something that I might try out. Is there a way that you found out to combat this reading slower than you type issue or is it still in the works.

don't think there's anything i can do to fix that other than to read more often which i don't really do

I don't think you could establish a fixed rhythm unless you're typing the same text each time.

If you reorder even a same set of words, it's a completely different rhythm because the transitions are different.

The use of the metronome in random text would have less to do with hand timing, and more to do with pacing your reading so you don't over/undershoot the synchronization window between hand / brain coordination.

I don't think you could establish a fixed rhythm unless you're typing the same text each time.

If you reorder even a same set of words, it's a completely different rhythm because the transitions are different.

The use of the metronome in random text would have less to do with hand timing, and more to do with pacing your reading so you don't over/undershoot the synchronization window between hand / brain coordination.

ok, that makes some sense

Is there a way that you found out to combat this reading slower than you type issue or is it still in the works.

don't think there's anything i can do to fix that other than to read more often which i don't really do

Well I read quite a lot for a normal human being and the issue still persists, but I had an idea as to why and it was one of tp4's original answers to my query. Maybe I read the word, and I actually try to comprehend the word and then type it rather than just trying to type the word right off of the bat. Then, my fingers catch up to my eyes and I make an error.
