I just pitched my yeast for my first 5 gallon home brew. I slightly modified the recipe for Caribou slobber brown from http://www.northernbrewer.com by adding an extra 4oz of chocolate barley and 2oz of roasted barley.

Really excited about getting into home brewing, and up next is a cream ale and an IPA.

Got some soda and soju (hell Korea doesn't really have a special beer please let it count :<).

Tsingtao or Heineken are the only ones I can stomach... Keystone is just gross. Bud light is sugar water ._.

Just got back from Great American Beer Festival in Denver!  So much awesome, and I had a brewers pass which got me into every session and other things. I even got to try some Sam Adams Utopias!

Saturday:
Went to Memphis, TN's new brewery, Wyseacre, for Oktoberfest! These dudes are off to a good start! After the Oktoberfest party, I went over to another local bar, who was tapping yet another Memphis, TN-based brewery, Memphis Made. They had a Saison and a Pale Ale on tap. Can't say I was too impressed with these brews, but they are seasonal.

Sunday:
A few friends and I decided to day trip to Little Rock, AR. We went to Stone's Throw brewpub (which had some good beers and local food for snacks) and Diamond Bear, which is in the midst of moving to a new location that will allow them to at least double their production and distribute beyond the mid south region.

Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale. So so good, and no spice in it like so many other winter brews. It's hoppy, almost like an IPA and at 7.6% it'll keep you plenty warm!

I love Bifrost.  Once of the few Elysian beers I fell in love with when I was in Seattle.  If you ever stumble across the Bye-Bye Frost (a stronger version of it) be sure to try it.  It will knock you on your ass and is delicious.

Yeah, it was good, pretty drinkable and better than I expected.

The spices were noticeable in the taste but not too overwhelming.

That sucks.  One of the things I love most about being in So Cal is all the good beer.  Funny enough though is the beer I am looking forward to the most this December is from Colorado.  http://averybrewing.com/our-ales/mephistopheles/.  This is one of my favorite all timers.  16% alc stout  :thumb:.  A local liquor store in Carlsbad carries it every year.  $10/bottle, but you only need a couple.

Thanks Badwrench...I'll see if my local store carries that. Always up for a new brew.

@missalaire - There should be a standard alcohol law across the US. Besides prohibition of course.

It is a bit of a tough find as it is done in smaller batches and released every December.  Worth doing a little work to find if you want to try something very unique. Note that this is meant to be a "sipping beer".  When I was introduced to this, I was given the bottle and a small brandy snifter.  It actually tastes better as it warms up.

How is it in Norway...? Because here in PA you can only buy liquor at a Wine & Spirits store (state gov't controlled) and if you go to a beer distributor, you can only buy by the full case (no 6 packs, etc). You have to go to a bar, pizza shop, or cafes with licenses to buy 6 packs. It's rather inconvenient.

Might actually have to eat my words here, that is quite similar to how we have it. Grocery stores are only allowed to sell alcohol under 4,75%, if you want something with more % you have to go to a store called "Vinmonopolet"(The Wine Monopoly). It's a alcoholic beverage retailer that is owned by the government and it's the only company allowed to sell anything over 4,75%. This makes the prices go through the roof due to no competion over prices and taxation of alcohol here. Another funny thing about the alcohol law over here is that The Wine Monopoly closes at 6PM on weekdays and 3PM on Saturdays. Even the grocery stores have a similar law: not allowed to sell alcohol after 8PM on weekdays and 6PM on Saturday. Used to work in a grocery store, tourists used to think we were joking when we refused them to buy beer on a Saturday night :)
Not being able to buy beer after a certain time of the day doesn't really bother me since I am used to it, but it's the prices that gets to me.
Lets pick a Norwegian craft beer, for instance Nøgne Ø IPA(50cl). Currently going for nice price of 12.7 $ at The Whine Monopoly. Or a bottle of Jack Daniels (70cl) going for 65 $.
Having a passion for keyboards and craft beers really hurts the economy when being a student in Norway hehe

Kind of the same here in Istanbul as far as prices go. A pint of Guinness at a bar will set you back around $8, and a bottle of Jack Daniels is about $90. Unfortunately my scotch of choice is Lagavulin 16 year old, and that runs for about $190 a bottle.

Yeah, Utah beer in the Grocery store is at 3.75% by weight or 4% by volume....figure that one out???

We also have to go to a state run liquor store for anything higher than that. They don't even allow Grocery Stores to sell flavored beer or wine coolers anymore because it "appeals to younger adults" under the age of 21 and they might steal it.

I can't complain to much though because we have a lot of good breweries in Utah. The Squatters in Salt Lake will randomly have an event where you buy a meal and pay a certain amount for an endless supply of beer for the night.

They don't even allow most grocery stores here to sell beer... the only way they can do it is if they have a cafe inside and have a license.

Normally I hate Ninkasi, but I'm having their High Gravity Imperial Stout and it's awesome.  It's not nice and complex like most Imperial Stouts are, but it's got a nice little bit of hoppiness along with smoky malts, much like Victory Storm King.  It's delicious.

You guys got me thinking about what I want this weekend.  Checked Stone's page and found out they have the 12.12.12 Vertical Epic on Tap (just called and confirmed they have 6 kegs).  $15/gal growler fill - I will be bringing 2 with me  :thumb:.  This was my favorite of the Vertical Epics.  Also on tap are a couple of their regular beers that have been held in used red wine barrels.  Gonna try those before decided what to put in my 3rd growler.  Should be a good weekend.

I hate all of you with awesome and affordable local breweries.  I have Bootleggers, which has some awesome and some horrible beers, but it's a long drive to it, and The Bruery, but they're not affordable and don't let you get their great beers in a growler unless you're a member.  I need to move up to near Drake's or Avery.

You are not far from here.  Come on down on a Saturday afternoon and we can hang at Stone for a bit (and for that matter, anyone else that wants to join).  I will bring a few spare growlers and you can take one with you  :thumb:

I am pretty sure I am free next weekend, so maybe we can set something up.

That sounds like fun.  Next week is a bye week for my Baylor and the week after is a Thursday game, so I should be good for either hopefully.  I forgot that Stone is closer than I thought it was.  Still not super close, but not ridiculously far away.

Cool.  Either should work just fine for me.  Notre Dame is playing at 12:30pm on the 2nd, but I don't mind recording it.

Drive should be about an hour depending on where in the OC you are.

That is true, but Stone has a great place to have a meal and hang out while Lost Abbey is just a tasting room (albeit a very large one).  Plus Stone has a ton of different stuff on tap.  That and you can pair it with some soft pretzels and stout beer cheese.
