[IC] Ojou - An O-ring mount 60%
« on: Tue, 16 November 2021, 18:48:04 »
The Ojou
Design inspired by Hololive 2nd Gen VTuber, Nakiri Ayame. This my rendition of an endgame O-ring mount 60% with no external screws and a polished bead-blasted stainless steel bottom.

New Prototypes

More pictures here:https://imgur.com/a/mqJuTaG
Photos courtesy of Trifelife!

Features
  • 50A duro O-ring "gummy worm" mount
  • Anodized 5052 Aluminum for the top and internal case
  • Stainless Steel Weight
  • 6.5 Degree Typing Angle
  • 18.5mm Front Typing Height
  • Universal USB-C Daughterboard
  • PCB Compatible with QMK/VIA
  • No external screws

Supported Layouts

  • Split/full backspace
  • Split/full right shift
  • Stepped/normal capslock
There will be a choice of HHKB or WKL top.

Plate
The plate will be a standard 1.5mm thickness.
I have yet to decide on material, but it will be one of the following:
  • Aluminum
  • Carbon Fiber

PCB
  • QMK/VIA Compatible
  • Universal USB-C Daughterboard
Designed by Trifelife

Colors
  • Black
  • Wine Red

Price: TBA but NOT cheap

Updates
Commence prototyping soon. Prototypes made! We had both polished and bead blasted weights were made for the prototypes.
My manufacturer complained to me that the production of polished stainless steel pieces that large was too difficult to produce and QC. It is looking likely that we will be moving towards only providing a bead-blasted weight finish for production.

FAQ
Q: Why no bumpons?
A: It was an aesthetic decision. Aside from the emblem/logo, I didn't want to interrupt the curves and smooth design of the weight with cutouts for bumpons. For those that are worried that the polished stainless steel weight will get scratched, I understand your concern. However, stainless steel is relatively hard. Unless the board is very seriously mistreated, it won't get damaged very easily. Though, I still wouldn't rough it up needlessly. As such if you're interested in this board, I recommend using a deskmat with it and storing it away properly when not in use.

Very pretty board
Wish it was a 65% instead

Also no "full" 60% layout?

I like ayame, would be very interested in a sandblasted SS version if possible. And would like to see a proto before GB as well. Very keen.

I've had a first round of protos that have been made for half a year already, but the design has changed a decent amount since then so I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to post pictures of those. A second round of prototyping will commence soon.

Uhh, it depends on the weight of the board but it will defo tend to slide around without bumpons. And the weight will scratch pretty quickly if you just need to put the board aside on any hard surface (e.g. when cleaning the table).

5lbs built. It doesn't slide around very easily. I've been keeping my first prototype in a case when not in use. I'll be looking into getting a custom carry/storage case made for this board when GB comes around.

Dedicated carrying case would be definitely appreciated.

Still not sure whether I find an absence of bumpons a big deal or not though. It does sound like a potential issue to me, but at the same time I use deskmats at all times and this board won’t be the one to use for travel for sure.

You can add on bumpons after the fact just fine. I just chose not to put dedicated bumpon cutouts for aesthetic reasons. Plus, there are literally pictures of two different prototype units posted in this thread after months of use without being scratched up. Stainless steel is pretty hard. It doesn't scratch easily unless you do something very wrong to the board.

Adding bumpons after the fact on a board which is probably gonna cost way over 500€ feels wrong

Those screws hold in the weight. The weight isn't exposed internally except for a small opening for the daughterboard cable routing channel.

Out of the 3 Ayame boards I like yours the best, idk about the lack of bumpons since I tend to use my keyboards in strange positions and places, but tbf it would be a problem with everything that isnt sandblasted in my case so Im letting it slide. GLWIC

the theme just kinda seems slapped onto this board...
I would rather this board be sold as just a nice 60 honestly. The addition of an ayame theme just seems very weird to build more attention. if you friend really likes it then just run it for him maybe. otherwise this just seems like your trying to bring attention to the board via weebs rather than what the board brings to the community. idk. I just beileve that designers should design around a theme they care for. not what their friends like *shrug*

its a nice board, but I just dont like the way the theme was done. otherwise GLWIC,
