Had a feeling this would explode today.  CC confirms the recent influx of translucent CCs are fake.

It's a shame people have been introduced to these fakes through paying inflated prices for them. If they were sold to people at $20 then it wouldn't have been such a big deal. I wouldn't mind owning a fake CC myself as long as it was priced around the same as a real retail CC. Before a ****storm erupts, think about ALL the different kinds of replica products that exist and are widely used.

That really suxors :(

(Something else that goes down whilst Rowdy is asleep.)

To those that got duped, maybe CC will see you right.  I hope something can be worked out.

I, too, was surprised and amazed at the influx of translucents, and thought CC and his gnomes had been busy.

But now ...

I supposed it was inevitable eventually.  Small and rare things of value are usually copied.  This has happened before.  I guess someone just couldn't resist making a few bucks from unsuspecting collectors.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Totally. Seemed inevitable, buyers/traders will need to be more aware moving forward that these exist.

Judging by the pic in the OP, an easy way to find out would be to get a pic of the bottom of the cap.

I'm pretty sure this is a very separate discussion.  It's one thing to make more varied keycaps available to the public for cheaper prices and another to completely copy someone else's work in a shady manner like this and then expect for your copies to sell for a lot of money.  I won't compare Clacks to Rembrandt, but while many of us would love to have nice oil pantings in our apartments, would you say it's okay for back alley copies to come out and be sold for millions of dollars to unsuspecting customers?  This is a very different situation that you're trying to justify.  Copying someone's artwork, without permission, and moreover pretending for this artwork to be genuine =/= good thing for the masses.  What other keycap makers, like Bro Caps or Gasmask, have been doing is the right way to go about it.

I find CC's were really just for the sentimental value, a true person who enjoys it won't mind, but just be more cautious with trades and sales. Must be good to own a clack for a while, no/little chance of it being fake. Especially tri-colors as those are harder to make.

Woops I posted this in the mail thread..

Whoever disrespects an artist such as CC is disgrace of a human being.
I say the more fakes the more expensive real CC's are worth.
Also, its like the Euro car world. running FAKE BBS REPS gets you made fun of and youre a huge joke to the scene.
So why would people buy fakes? It isnt going to make the real ones any less valuable.

It seems that, much like other art, we now need to establish the provenance of all Clacks and maybe even include some sort of authenticating device.  Sad that it's come to this, but I suppose it was inevitable.

The only difference is that click clacks are mere molded plastics, despite being art. As it has already been proven, they don't seem too difficult to replicate. Cars are made of hundreds, if not thousands, of parts and are not a good comparison.

The only difference I see with the fakes is the lack of branding on the bottom. Aesthetically, they look identical, and that's what most people care about.

It was only a matter of time, folks. Enjoy your $$$ pieces of plastic. Many others will enjoy them for a percentage of the cost.

Selling copyrighted material is illegal though. So nope.

What is the deal with the Vader CC then?

Same here...I'd be willing to buy one at "retail" price. The only problem with that is most people with a fake clack, of course, paid $$$ and will want that much in return.

mass production of replicas really hurts multiple people... but the ones who will suffer the most here are people who want clacks for the name and CC.

CC has a lot to lose considering I've been doing something similar for a little bit.  This whole thing is expensive and expensively time consuming.  People with greater means will, of course, make a mess of this without much effort at all.  A worrisome thing...

Is there any chance of legal action? Even if CC couldn't do anything to the people who are making them (assuming these are from overseas) isn't there something that could be done, legally?

Is there any chance of legal action? Even if CC couldn't do anything to the people who are making them (assuming these are from overseas) isn't there something that could be done, legally?

International.  No recourse.  Only chance is social consequences on GH, DT, OTD, KBD

This means:
1. prohibit PP gift as a payment requirement
2. Provide thorough pictures of the product, topside, bottom, etc.
3. Deal with reputable people
4. Hold dearly on to your tighty whities, because dupes are unavoidable, use 1, 2, and 3 to CYA
1. This has nothing to do with the situation
2. Yup
3. The culprit(s) here are very reputable on GH
4. Okay?

PP gift does not allow the buyer a recourse in event of being sold misrepresented goods, whereas at least PP Goods does. It's silly to impose PP Gift onto buyers when PP is going to collect their fees from one party or another. The main reason I believe sellers want PP Gift is to skirt the "supposed" issue of being burned by someone abusing the dispute policy provided through PP Goods.
It really comes down to trusting the signature markings on pieces of plastic which unfortunately can easily be replicated, so if number 3. doesn't hold, then refer to 4.

Maybe CC will mass-produce them himself, add a maker's mark, and then drop the price. Then at least he's ruined the copyright infringer's market.
