Tray Case vs Sandwich Case
« on: Tue, 06 November 2018, 07:44:47 »
Hello!

I'm currently working on a case design with a couple other people and the question came up if we should go with a tray style case or a sandwich style case.

The intent of our case is to be fairly high end, to look clean, and all that jazz. Some preliminary feedback from the community suggests that people prefer sandwich cases over tray in most designs. So I wanted to hear more on the idea.

If you could please list your preference and explain why, that would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!

There are many ways to construct either.

Personally, I prefer keyboards to be as silent as possible. Therefore, I want internal sound dampening, good rubber feet, plate suspended on rubber, PCB suspended by plate etc.
Other people prefer their keyboards to be as solid as possible: with plate clamped shut in-between case top and case bottom of as much solid metal as possible, making their keyboards heavy and feel solid and sharp.
But sound and feel is pretty much a black art though.
I think many high-end keyboards are constructed more by what is cost-effective and looks good though.
