(Sort of)Drunk purchase, Dolch PAC 61.
« on: Thu, 16 August 2018, 11:44:15 »
Few weeks ago after taking my sleep pill I brought this pac61 for $349.95 + import cost to UK, $483 total. F**K! Not even the 64 or 65 which has pentium and windows 95 neither is this pristine condition, rubberised coating has melted. Took me few hours to clean and spilled 5L can of alcohol.

I'd be curious if you can retro it and put newer guts into it like a LED screen and a low power PC like an NUC or similar and reuse the case and all. Very interesting device though.

Congrats!

One thing you must do is to replace the clock-battery inside, of not already done. Mine leaked and ate through the hard-drive and inner metal enclosure. If you unplug any cable, do take a photo of it first so that you'd know where it should go when you are about to plug it back in. Motherboards don't have the connections marked and getting hold of the manual could be difficult.

BTW... Rubberised coating?

Dang, think of how many beers you could have bought with that money ;D I buy enough stupid stuff whilst sober... :-[ At least you have something tangible. I recall an acquaintance who spent a small fortune on a virtual currency for some online MMORPG while in a drunken stupor. Think of how many people probably bought high priced Bitcoin while drunk and sitting in front of a computer.

Thanks guys, I don't have s wife :)

The case of the keyboard and display bezel are sticky and some area has entire layer of coating peeled off include the part under the led overlay.

I've dissembled it to find the battery but nothing is on top of the motherboard and somehow the clock was always correct since I got it but always shows a error message on boot: "EISA CMOS checksum error" even after resetting the bios to default configuration :(

Needs to find out if I can fit a sound card(ISA I think?)

Holy **** dude, that's a lot. I got two of these for 60 quid a couple of years back  :-X

At least it's in good condition! Gutted you got one with the RJ11 cable though and not the PS2/DIN connection though.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?
