He died last Friday, aged 75. His family had him buried before making it public.
He is most known for having played the Replicant leader Roy Batty in the movie Blade Runner (1982), set in the future, and in that movie: for a monologue right before the character dies. Hauer had written that monologue himself.
Ironically, Rutger Hauer died the same year as that movie was supposed to portray.
He almost always did a memorable performance. He starred in lots of action-movies in the '80s: Ladyhawke, The Hitcher, Wanter:Dead or Alive, Blind Fury. He has had many smaller roles in movies and TV-series since then, most which have been characters with significant moments.
And in 2011 he starred in 80's revival ultra-violence flick Hobo with a Shotgun. He was working until his death.
I have seen him do the autograph circuit at a sci-fi movie convention. He donated the proceeds to his AIDS charity. A stand-up guy.
I raise my whiskey glass for you sir.
