I noticed you have aluminum and acrylic. How does the acrylic plate compare to the metal one?

i think you messed up quoting my post

yeah the aluminium case needs to be shaved (or the PCB) for the PCB to work with the case and the case is very rough to touch and kind of dirty so many have cleaned and sanded and buffed it.

i have yet to do anything to the aluminium case yet so right now except try out the top and bottom layers on the acrylic one so i don't have the second ergodox yet, not that i need it right now anyway.

the acrylic for the most part is cut correctly, i think i saw a burn mark but nothing noticeable.

problem with the acrylic, especially clear acrylic, its not very pretty, it makes something that looks geeky already look even more geeky and it gets dirty very easily.

and this is coming from me who owns a 30" tall danger den clear acrylic tower LOL

Oops, fixed it.

I was mostly wondering how it felt to type on, I'm getting a case custom cut in black and white (Black top/bottom, white middle) so the look shouldn't be so bad.

the acrylic is very sturdy and thick so i think the typing is the same though i havent fully assembled my aluminum yet

if you have the full hand then of course the feeling would be different on the actual hands.

I just finished mine yesterday, and I'm loving it!  The ergo clear switches are lubed with a mixture of GPL-103 & 205.  I used SMD diodes (my first attempt at SMD soldering and after getting over the jitters it was easy!)  One of my plates seems to be cut funky and wouldn't hold switches in certain locations (the other one was perfect, every switch snapped right into place), and it was a pain to hold the switch down while feeding the solder with the same hand on the opposite side of the pcb, iron in the other hand of course, but I made it through it!

Here is my layout so far: https://www.massdrop.com/ext/ergodox/?referer=HEXPCZ&hash=690ba45eae62982a0d5db34a3cc5a113

Copy-pasta from the other thread:

Quote
Massdrop is making the right move by dropping the aluminum case.  It is a royal PITA.  The finish is rough, to say the least, and the fitment is awful.  There is a lot of error in the cuts, so the PCB wouldn't even fit into the case.  A lot of grinding, milling, drilling, filing, and polishing, I finally got it to work.  Not perfect, but tolerable at least.

It's loaded up with lubed browns and the "qwerty-kinesis-mod" layout to start.  Between the matrix layout and blank keys, typing is a huge challenge.

I think when I end up putting mine together I'm going to make a GUI layout creator for it. I have a feeling I'm going to be re-programming this thing quite a few times, and I want that to be as easy as possible.

maybe i should design a case for the ergodox so that mine doesnt look like everyone else lol

I really wanted to buy one of these. Maybe if they do a third round, or maybe I can grab one in the Classifieds some day.

i am pretty sure out of the 2 rounds some people are going to be parting with their ErgoDox

i love mine (obviously) but some people may find they don't like the matrix layout.

Not quite as easy as I'd like. I want to configure it, hit save and it uploads to the device.

i mean that is fine, but realize the massdrop configurator thing saves a file (made for the ic07 firmware) that you just load directly in the teensy loader (which runs on mac, pc, linux) and it takes like 5 seconds to load and restart the teensy.

would be nice to put that effort into making a configurator tool for the phantom. ;)

True, but I don't own a Phantom, but I will own an ErgoDox :)

Plus, I like getting my hands dirty. I've even toyed with the idea of replacing the controller on one of my RealForces with a Teensy 3.

TBH, I'll probably put a Teensy 3 in my ErgoDox (micro USB ftw) and save the Teensy 2 for some other project.

*EDIT* Damn, looks like the Teensy 3 won't fit in the same pinout as the 2.0, oh well :(

well the teensy's mini-usb doesn't stick out out of the case so the miniusb wouldn't matter you could still with some work rig a microusb port if you absolutely wanted to.

Also the Teensy 3 is different from the 2 in the processor. You'd need to rewrite/recompile the firmware for that processor.

these rests were an experiment/creation by kurplop, kind of a one-time thing he wanted to make.

I sanded, stained, and added varnish to it.

once i finish this ErgoDox i am going to take much better photos with better lighting, this thing deserves better photos. This photo doesnt do it justice.

can't wait for the Retro, should look great with the wooden rests.

DSA Retro by almightyglod, on Flickr

im gonna keep bumping this thread until more people share, im doing exciting things with my other ergodox soon which is now my travel ergodox. can't wait to share that, but i can't until i replace a part i broke.

Gotta say that i think i am done with using normal keyboards. i am still going to collect keyboards and key caps and i plan on building more DIY boards. 3 of the 4 GH60s i am getting are going to be gifted or sold to friends. But the ErgoDox is the best keyboard I've owned. It combines all the things i loved from other keyboards I've owned and has the customized experience you only get from a DIY cherry mx board.

My next keyboard to replace the ErgoDox, if that ever happens, would be another DIY board with the matrix layout or maybe the next offering from Kenesis. A long shot would also be owning a uTron (split ergo topre? ermagawd topre....)

lol @ Glod. Glad to see someone loves their Ergodox as much as I do mine.

I've since retired most of my other boards ever since I finished building my ergodox, so much so that I can no longer use non-matrix boards (so to speak. I can still use those but find myself thumbing the spacebar when I want to press backspace. It gets annoying).

To continue the conversation from the other thread, your top cover already looks great, though the sides are still a little unsightly. Looking forward to when you're fully done with it, as well as what you're doing with the other one. I'm working on a second one myself, though I'm planning through the process for that one at a slower pace.

yeah, not going to sand the sides until probably next Monday or the Monday after but i am going to do it for sure; it is a bit ugly especially considering i have the ErgoDox in a tent/slope so the sides are just staring at me every-time i glance at the keyboard.

kurplop took sanding those edges to another freaking level http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=22780.msg854128#msg854128

i doubt i can get it to look completely flush like that but as long as the sides of each layer to have the same finish/shine i'll be happy. I may have to my dremel at first. It makes a huge toxic mess when sanding the aluminium.

I'm a bit puzzled regarding why so few have commented on their ErgoDoxes. I can understand not everyone posting pictures, especially if they kept everything stock, but the limited response is surprising. A few have made unfavorable comments, which I think we should welcome, but considering the number sold I would have expected a bigger overall response. I realize that we "ergo" enthusiasts at geekhack are less likely to gush over cute keycaps and other aesthetic considerations, we are more interested in solving ergonomic issues. Do you think that many have found the ErgoDox not to be the "magic feather" they expected and are too embarrassed to admit it after all the excitement?

As for me, I think the biggest problem I have found is that the programability has allowed me to remap by layout so differently from the conventional that I fear I will have trouble using a standard keyboard again.

My next keyboard to replace the ErgoDox, if that ever happens, would be another DIY board with the matrix layout or maybe the next offering from Kenesis. A long shot would also be owning a uTron (split ergo topre? ermagawd topre....)

I could never use that keyboard, but my god... that combination is amazing, those rests look amazing and work so well with the caps and the case... it looks like a keyboard from the future... but better and with some retro charm. Really love that alot

No worries boys and girls.  I will post my Ergodox when it arrives in the mail, courtesy of my assembler.  With Retro DSA!  From various angles and poses!  Hopefully with good lighting!
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Too bad mine didn't come with a metal frame.

It looks like you can hack the Gibson with that.
