[IC] BINEPAD BNR1 - Rotary Encoder
« on: Sat, 02 January 2021, 11:59:31 »
Hello Geekhack!

I would like to introduce everyone to BNR1

BNR1 is an CNC machined rotary encoder knob from a solid rod of aluminium.
It can be configured via QMK flashable Atmega32U4 to do just about anything you want it for. After almost 6 months of development and prototyping the BNR1 has arrived. It uses EC11 encoder with no detent that means it is smooth when you rotate the knob. It takes both rotary and click input.

Been looking forward to this for some time!
Looks wonderful, and exactly what I've personally been after in a rotary knob.

Hope to hear more from this!

So ec11. Turning can do something, pressing can do something, is there support for turning while pressed in doing anything?

Since it's using QMK, yes that will work.

Inspired by the Microsoft knob? $50? I'm in.

PS - make sure it's heavy enough that when you spin the rotary, the entire structure doesn't spin/move. Some macro pads have this issue.

Does it have LEDs?

No, but if you truly need one, you could glue a battery powered LED inside the top knob and just replace the battery whenever it dies (though you won't be able to control it, so it'd be best to just find the color LED you want and just stick with that).

Would you be able to mill out the least amount of metal possible from the knob to make it as heavy as can be?

Maybe different knob materials as extras?

Is there an estimated knob weight? I prefer a knob with some heft and inertia. Don’t want it flopping around on my desk if the cable gets jostled.  :))

I've been looking at getting an incremental encoder (no detents, w/e it's called lol) working with QMK on one of my boards but I've only seen posts of people saying the keypresses were infinite and they couldn't get it working. I've got no knowledge on this subject so I'm just wondering what your QMK code looks like (I didn't see anything in github yet) or if you only needed to get it working on the hardware side of things. Sleek looking macropad  :thumb:

They had posted that it would start on the 21st on their Instagram story, but with the recent update about the rubber base I think it’ll be a bit more delay.

Don't worry! They're almost done with the manufacturing of them, so they haven't even shipped out to vendors yet. There will be extras after all the GB orders have been shipped out, so if you join the DangKeebs Discord, you can get notifications on when the extras/preorders go live and you'll still be able to get one. My guess is that extras will be sold around June or July, but maybe if you're lucky, the preorder will go live before then so you can secure one for yourself.
