Has anyone here hacked a 3" arcade trackball into a PC yet?
New ones can be a bit costly, but I see that ancient Atari (Missile Command, Centipede, etc) trackball parts are auctioned all the time, often for ~$30, even less if somehow broken. Wiring up a little mcu and PS/2 interface to one of these would be easy enough ... in fact, many of the new trackball models come with integrated PS/2 or USB anyhow, it's just a matter of building some sort of chassis.
Is it worth the effort? Do trackballs generally suck? I expect they are (or can be) high precision, at least some of the "heavy" models. Of course bigger is better, nobody wants small balls. I also expect they'd require frequent takeapart/cleaning unless you only handle them with rubber gloves. The last time I used a trackball was about the same year eIBM's L40 was made.
Nobody here uses tablets, touchscreens, lightpens, styli, other pointing interfaces?
