Hello everybody
This is the Interest Check for my second board, the J-02. A fully featured 60% with Brass internal weighting, removable pen rail, full isolation mount design, carbon fibre plate and with a USB-C daughterboard.
After the success in proving the execution of my first board (the J-01; more info and pics/videos HERE (https://imgur.com/a/GmAf5lN)and a build stream HERE (https://youtu.be/nuT5dkOWwVY)), I wanted to do something a little less extreme from a layout perspective and that was more accessible both in terms of layout options and availability.

Design & Inspiration
The original idea for this board actually precedes the J-01; but at the time I wanted to prove that the design, aesthetics and mechanisms worked. This design is centred around a top and bottom piece anodised in the same colour, with a thick brass insert through the middle; and extruding through the top to form part of a pen rail.
This was influenced by the old school vintage boards which used to have pen rails incorporated in the design for office workers; and I wanted to do a modern take on that. Its currently magnet mounted; although this may change in the final design to something more robust.

The dark colours were inspired by the current ‘black and brass’ movement that is seen in lots of household design and features, but I would like to offer dark grey and perhaps a white if there is interest.
In terms of the shape, again I wanted to do a take on vintage boards, offering a slab of a keyboard, nestled neatly on a wedge. This makes the board easy to pick up, reduces the final weight of a full sided and back design, and gives it a timeless floating look in line with the J-01.

The board is constructed from multiple pieces, and is fairly involved. The mounting system is full isolation mount using Nitrile rubber, as seen on the J-01 and the Kepler. Below are some exploded views of the board showing construction; although I’m looking at opportunities to enable the gaskets to come pre-assembled as one unit that stretches around the plate post soldering.
The idea behind this design is to remove all contact of the plate with the case - removing any inherent ping or resonance transference by contact. This works exceptionally well as seen on the J-01 and Kepler. The idea behind the CF plate is to retain a robust typing experience with a softness added to the bottom out from the gaskets incorporated into the design. As a material CF feels very much like brass; however as its not a metal it doesn't have any issues with ping, and presents a strong note with a pleasant timbre and acoustics. The plates will also have acoustic assisting cuts made in strategic places for both ISO and ANSI variants.

Here is a simple KLE showing the layouts that will be available on the PCB. If there is enough feedback to add other things I'm open to that - please let me know in the comments below. Plates will be fixed as ANSI or ISO with both caps options and split right shift. The ANSI File will also support split backspace for HHKB. Plates files will be available if anyone wants to get one made to something more specific based on the PCB support that gets added/changed.

Prototype
I have already had a prototype made, and I’ll be hopefully building this on stream on Sunday 29th September 8pm UK, noon PST on the Top Clack channel.
The additional tops will also be prototyped prior to the GB to make sure everything is in order and to ensure success.
My inspections of the prototype have found it to be of a very high standard and I’m excited to build the board for real – I’m currently just waiting on custom gaskets and PCB’s, all of which should arrive this week.

This GB will be run via Vendors - these are still be TBC although the EU proxy is likely to be MyKeyboard.EU. I just dont have the time personally to QC and validate all boards etc in a reasonable time-frame; and I wouldn't want o pass delays on to buyers due to my tardiness.

Interested to see how this gets priced. Usually 60's go for less than their 65+ counterparts, but the build quality on this looks too good to go for anything less than 350.
I dont want to speculate on price just yet but thats the very lowest end of my estimates right now - given the level of complexity, the materials etc its likely to be closer to the $500 mark but I'll price as low as possible

Things I love about it: materials, looks heavy, sturdy, love that vibe, the colors are super classy, the build seems both simple and complex at the same time (not sure if that makes sense), and am I the only one who is kind of pumped to have things other than pens on that rail? ie. mail day artisans chilling for a day or so ;)

No, the J-01 had a limited run of prototypes. There are currently no plans to make any more. That being said I will be raffling off two boards in late October for charity. Details will be shared on Top Clack, discord, reddit and GH when this is ready.

Other PCBs would not fit due to the mounting system and also the USB ports. Other than that it’s standard thickness.

I was searching for typing tests for trash pandas and came across your Youtube video of a kbd board with a carbon fiber plate and trash pandas. Just what I was looking for. Loved the video. Carbon fiber sounds so good with trash pandas! Is this carbon fiber plate going to be a tough squeeze on trash pandas as well? Also, will there be dampening foam in the kit for this board?
It will be a tight fitting plate but will work with any MX switches.
No case foam with the board as it goes against my vision for what the board should be, but I'll make a file avail for anyone to purchase some cut to size using a service like MKUltra.

Excuse my ignorance here, but what is the expected life time of a gasket? How long does it take before ageing makes it brittle? Also, if the gasket starts to break down, how easy is it to find a replacement?
The material used in this particular board has a shelf life of about 10 years and a usability of around 30 assuming its kept away from moisture, direct sunlight etc (manufacturers numbers). Given that it’s usually designed for harsh working environment compared to a desk/office environment it should be fine for many many years. The gasket files and plate files will be available after the GB concludes anyway in case people require replacements in the future.

I liked the HHKB renders. For me the extra space at the bottom is great to balance the top. It is still a great looking case, I just fell in love with the HHKB layout. :)Every time I see this, I’m sad that there will be no HHKB option. This looks so nice.

OP, I love this design but not sure I could roll on the 60%. Do you think you may rerelease the J-01 or make a slightly larger version in the future?
On his discord he's already talked about running a J-03 which looks like a 78key layout. Probably not for a year or two though.

The J-03 is not certain to go beyond prototype tbh. I’d hate to say something is coming and then never get round to it.

HHKB layout is IN!! We will have these tops as an option after significant interest :D
Limited Edition Raffle starts on 1st Feb at around 10am EST - Asian and Western forms will be live at the same time via @iLouis_07 | iLumkb.com and myself. Links will be posted here, Cannon Keys and Mykeyboard Discords, My Discord and Reddit and will be open for 48 hours before drawing.

No the plates won’t support a 6.25u space as part of the GB. As soon as the GB is closed all plate files will be shared in case anyone wants to amend and get something custom made

If I understand correctly, the LE is identical except electrophoresis finish and with copper instead of brass accent?
The design is the same yes - just the material change from brass to copper and the choice of finish

If Jae made this I would probably sell my spleen to own it. Just saying. Also this counts as FCFS position 1 in the Queue if it does every happen.
