Title: [IC] Space80 - Apollo[Updated]
Post by: AIRPOTTER on Sun, 06 December 2020, 14:31:32

Our Space80-APOLLO Logo
Introduction
Hello keyboard friends, it has been several busy months producing and shipping Space65 CyberVoyager as well as producing Think6.5v2. Now that the shipping for Space65 CyberVoyager is completed (some Schrodinger orders still with DHL queue, please email me if you don't receive within 2 weeks), and the Think6.5 V2 production is progressing along very well (still projecting shipping around CNY 2021), it is time for me to start the Interest Check for the second keyboard of the Gray Studio Space series keyboard: Space80:APOLLO, the first 80% TKL layout customized keyboard from Gray Studio.

The inspiration for the Space series come from the mankind’s audacious exploration of the outer world, which has significantly influenced me since childhood. Interestingly, Space65 was actually the latest design I had but was first to hold a group buy, and Space80 was designed earlier than Space65, and now it is finally time to bring it to you. And I think it is a good idea to take the time to finetune the design and bring the best to you.

Space80 project started in 2018 and went through many iterations, Space65 and Space80 share similar the design language – a relatively thicker top piece and thinner side profile. The Space80 design looks a bit different, to create more dynamics. And the top piece features cuts like orbits, and I added a badge to the top of the arrow keys. It serves as a RGB light strip, and it can also become a Capslock indicator. The middle layer again features some cool light effects, following the Space series theme.

Further, given we have successfully implemented a top notch typing feel gasket design for Think6.5 V2, we decided to include a gasket design on the Space80 as well. We will be sending prototypes to streamers for live stream builds and typing tests. And similar to Think6.5V2, the plate for the Space80 will be using FR4  and PC .

Below are some design images. The board has went through several iterations of prototypes and will be sent to streamers soon.

I am sure at this point there is still some room for improvement. Please kindly let me know your thought if you will be interested in this, and your suggestions for the GB and the design. Thank you. If you would like to chat in Discord, here is the link: https://discord.gg/WhCcbyzn9z

Looks great, may I please suggest allowing compatibility with standard 87 PCB such as the hiney 87 or infinity 87? Also, it would be great if there is an option to have matching color for the top and bottom case. Looking forward to hearing more. :D

what will the typing angle on the board be? also any plans to offer extra plates in different materials? I'd love carbon fiber as in the Space65

Yeah left to middle just feels more accommodating if your keeb is off to the left of your desk, but your coiled cable goes to the right. But the versatility of middle mount usb would kinda work for right or left side racing cables. Put my vote down as left side, but I'd be happy with middle just as well  :thumb:

This is superb, overall. A couple small things: I think the edge along the back of the board -- as well as the sides -- would look much cleaner if you removed the groove that runs around the top case piece. It really muddles the look of the indented, thin center piece. I think I'd also remove the logo on the back.

I mean the board would be objectively better with an F13 key.

Also, not a fan of the graystudio on the back. I feel like any of your other brandings would work better, if not blank. Great looking board though, even with my subjective opinion on that.

Would there be any chance of bluetooth on this board as well? I would really love to indulge my partner with this board. Also, not really a fan of the all around LED strip. Like lube, less is more, the LEDs on space65 were very tasteful, but it seems abit too much here. I agree that the graystudio logo at the back does kinda look out of place too.

Looking forward to more color renders!!

I was on the fence with the "amount going on" with the space65 CV, but have kinda regret skipping the GB. Hopped on the Think 6.5v2 first thing to heal those wounds too haha.

that being said, the Apollo takes that design language and spreads it out a bit more, and I think it works so well as a WKL TKL. This board is beautiful.

definitely in for the WKL.

I cant say no to a space themed tkl but some feedback would be changing the logo to be a more clear "Apollo". Second again that graystudio logo on the back is not really my thing.

I can live with the rgb strip going around.

I actually like the logo quite alot. It's not meant to spell out Apollo.
I'd rather not have any brand explicitly shown on the surface of my keyboard. It looks tacky.
Which is why you don't see any high end boards with their brand name spelt out on top of the board.
You'll only see mass market keyboards like logitech, corsair with their branding. Does it look nice?
I vote for the present logo. Please no lettering.

TGR, Exclusive, Lin Works, and Gray Studio have all produced keyboards with branding on the top, and there are plenty more out there.

I didn't say branding itself on the surface is tacky. What matters is the presentation.
Exclusive, very small minimal look that it doesn't take away from the clean look.
Space65 doesn't any branding. Think boards do but it doesn't say 'THINK6.5'
I don't know which TGR keyboard you're looking at but Jane doesn't have any branding.
Linworks is the only board that the branding more prominent but even then it's really not because it's engraved so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
What I meant by explicit branding is, actually having the name of the board displayed. For instance, Vega having the word "VEGA"
Space65 with the word "space65"
It's not obvious that they wanted to "spell out the word" or else they would have spelt out the word Apollo LMAO.
I think they are aware that nobody will think 000()0 looks like apollo.
It's a design choice, and there's no intention to spell out the word.
Clearly people who have no background with brand design shouldn't judge it as deal breaker.
With the above logic, Mcdonalds golden arches is a bad choice because it doesn't spell out "McDonalds"
Tesla's "T" is a bad choice because it doesn't spell "Tesla"

I think we agree that the current logo is good, and partially because "apollo" is only readable upon close inspection. I'm not going to get into a general argument about branding/design, but I do agree that: 1) any branding needs to be tasteful, and 2) the subtle look of the five slightly-modified circles is as far as branding should go on the Apollo. :thumb:

For the sake of accuracy, though, I will point out that your comment on TGR is laughable because nearly ALL TGR keyboards produced have explicit branding on top. Jane V1, Jane V2, Jane V2 CE, and Alice with a bold "TGR" on them (the Alice being literally the most popular keyboard of the past two years lmao). And then the TGR 910 straight up says "910" on top. All of these boards are stunners, even with very explicit branding. But I'll chalk up your comment up to your newness here.  ;D

Ah, ok I couldn't see the branding on TGR because they are engraved.
It actually looks really nice.
I just had a design idea. They could have the RGB visible through 000()0 instead and maybe have tiny strips of RGB beside them.
Something like this:

-- 000()0 --

Of course, the logo would have to be bigger to let the RBG through.....
I don't know if that would look better than the current design, but it would be cool to see RGB through the logo.

Does anyone know if Grey Studios has a 75% layout that is similar in style?

Wondering what price will be for the Space80. But would love to see this is 75%.

Our Space80-APOLLO Logo

And similar to Think6.5V2, the plate for the Space80 will be using FR4 material.

Show Image
(https://i.imgur.com/n8o6fjH.jpg)

Below are some design images. The board has went through several iterations of prototypes and will be sent to streamers soon.

I am sure at this point there is still some room for improvement. Please kindly let me know your thought if you will be interested in this, and your suggestions for the GB and the design. Thank you. If you would like to chat in Discord, here is the link: https://discord.gg/WhCcbyzn9z

Plus 1 for replacing Graystudio logo with "Space80” or "Apollo"

Also, backlighting would be nice or even perkey RGB.

Excellent design and specs though, prefer a 65% but this has me very interested

just my 2 cents, it looks the one circle with two openings is meant for LL in APOLLO, maybe using two circles with one opening each makes the name more identifiable

Haven't logged in or used this account in years. Once I saw this IC, I had to login just to say that I am 100% interested in this. I was lucky enough to snag a Space65 EVA-01 on eBay not too long ago and am absolutely in love with this thing. Nothing would please me more to have a sister in the Space80. Matter of fact, actually, one of my favorite form factors is the Topre 87U, especially for work. It's what the Space65 replaced while I work remote.

DEFINITELY interested. Only thing I fear is not being able to get one...so maybe there can be a way to prioritize those who submitted to the IC? Or maybe some way to create a queue system on Discord?

In terms of some things I would like to see: It would be awesome if the keyboard was hot swappable. It would also be incredible if certain Space65 components were backwards compatible with the Space80. For example, it would be amazing if the badge on the left was able to be used on both keyboards. I know some people have complained about the badge "protruding" out from the keyboard but I actually like this. Adds some aesthetic to the style.

In any case, count me in!

Just noticed that. Yeah out of all three spots, that is the worst place to put a port imo. Doesn't really matter. Just use a straight aviator and no coils.

I reiterate what some of the other posters here have mentioned (which is also something that seems to be a common trend on Discord) in that I would definitely vote to move that USB to the left side to be consistent with the Space65. I already purchased a custom cable for the Space65 with coil and everything; would be extremely weird to have my coil jutting out from the right side of the keyboard and whatnot. +1 to move the USB to the same spot as the Space65, about 1.5" off the left.

I also agree with what an other poster mentioned regarding the side aesthetics of the keyboard. Would be nice to be somewhat similar to the Space65. Then again, I'd be perfectly happy with an exact replica of the Space65 in an 80% form, so maybe I'm the minority. ;D

Looking forward to getting this board though, for sure!

I've made a few posts in the past about "personal preference" or changes I'd like to see such as having the power on the left side of the keyboard, etc.

Something else that wasn't even really that obvious to me was the branding. I know it's been mentioned several times and I also know you're working actively on a prototype, so I apologize if it's too late, but I agree that I'd like to eliminate any branding on the keyboard! I appreciate the "cybervoyager" text on the Space65, but that's about it! Something I really appreciate about the Space65 is that the branding is on the removable colored piece, so technically if we wanted, we could suggest that you create a piece without the branding so we could replace it. In any case, I like the "cybervoyager" text on the back and wouldn't mind seeing "apollo" on the back of this keyboard, but not necessarily the company name.

I know that sounds awful since you're trying to get your name out there, but I just don't think the keyboard is the place for it. Just my 2 cents!

Sleek designs as always :thumb: Not sure if this has been suggested, but the "GRAYSTUDIO" on the back of the board should really say "APOLLO" to fit more with the actual name of the board. I believe this was done on the S65 CV as well. Just my opinion.

Every other Gray release has been an unlimited group buy for a set duration. I doubt it will be a raffle.
The manufacturer is currently finishing shipping on the previous group buy, Think6.5 V2, with the expectation he will finish by the end of the month.

My guess, based on previous releases, is that he will finish the Think GB this month, send streamers/influencers boards next month, and a GB in mid/late June. Discord does not have any new information.

With a solder pcb, will you considering adding split spacebar support?

That will make a lot ergo board user happy as it looks so much better as we can use thumb cluster for mods

Thanks

Yeah but if you took a peek at the instagram it looks like this GB is starting pretty soon. I've already messaged everyone I could possibly do. Mods on discord are just mods on discord. They don't really have anything to do with the business/shipping side of things (And I have no expectation that they should have to bother with CS woes.) They were nice enough to respond to me and tell me that. I literally have tried ever avenue of contact with graystudio to no avail. I am now here, telling you all that they have real problems with CS and have ghosted me for over a year.

Just saw the video. Is there a way to diffuse the LEDs so we don't just see where each of them are located? It looked a bit tacky in the video from the side and back. Front looks okay but I wish it was brighter from the front. Overall case design is quite nice but wish the RGB was better

I feel the same way, very interested but seeing the lack of customer service for the think6.5 v2 GB is making me hesitant. I'm afraid that if I don't  receive the keyboard or if there is an issue with the keyboard there will be nothing I can do about it.

Please tel me you will have a EU vendor.. Perhaps mykeyboard.eu or candykeys.com
because customs in The Netherlands Suck !!!

i really really like this to be my first TKL in a long long time i have never head a custom TKL only 65% .
But this Looks so good with the gold weight really sexy.. perhaps sum e-white with a nice gold badge..

if there is a EU vendor and the price is not to high i'm 100% in for the TKL love the board guys great work.. :thumb: :thumb: ;D

Apparently they are focusing on the think6.5 deliveries before they start this GB internationally. But I got this from Alexotos' stream and not from Greystudio. The lack of communication is pretty sad.

@AIRPOTTER
i don't know if you are still open to suggestions ?

Currently i'm typing on my NK65 alu and there are two things i really like..

1) per key RGB south facing led , reason is i sum times like add a bit of soft dimmed underglow to match my keycap set..
as this board has even rgb on the bottom that i won't see while i am typing i figure a bit of soft light to match the rest won't harm
Ps. would also love to see per key top led on a solder pcb not only hot-swap.

2) add caps lock indicator and 2 or 3 level indicators.. like on the NK65 really nice feature..
if that's to much work perhaps there is something to be done with that logo on the right side..

And lastly not related to my NK65 .. But rather in general.
Please when you give the option to buy extra's when the GB starts. Please don't forgot if you are going to give extra plate and pcb options to also add extra plate foam / silicone.
So that people can build a second build using one case.. that makes it easier to swap.
That was the main reason why i did not buy extra's with my ikkie68 order but did buy extra's with my Saka65%..

And just to make sure.. count me in .. i don't know the color perhaps you can talk about the e-white anodizing ..
But i'm going to be in for sure.. nice work again.. checking in every couple of days to see the status hahaha.

It's most likely way to late for changes at this point as china gb has already ran.
1) most likely will not come with per key rgb none of their past boards have included it and a lot of people dont like per key rgb.
2)you can write custom QMK firmware to do this they have it built into the think v2 for the badge to work as caps indicator. So even if it's not oob you can always do this yourself with QMK
3) the last 2 gbs have extras of all interals to allow for multiple builds so would expect it to for this one as well.

e white is not annodization hence why it is e white the e stands for electrophoresis (If i remembered the right e word lol) its a different coating process not sure what info you are looking for on that.

The price will be the same as the GB in China. It should be $419.

It seems gb has started in CN, price was a bit more than $400.
Definitely interested, please announce the price for this soon.

Aye, yes, the final GB price should be $419.

Because prices of all raw materials have been soaring recently (aluminum, copper, PC raw materialshave all gone up by almost 30%; IC components such as Atmega 32U4 cost several times as much than last year and are extremely volatile).
And to ensure a good product performance (see the surface fineness of Space65: CV and Think6.5 V2), it really requires more investment. :(

I understand this is solder only but is there a chance for a 3rd party hotswap PCB compatibility?

Will you please look into the feasibility of a maroon/burgundy color?!

good luck mill maxing your board then since potter won't offer a hotswap pcb. Your best bet is to hope that some one is runnning a hotswap pcb GB or just millmax it.

Yeah I thought at this price, hotswap would be available for sure, thanks for clearing that up, good that we have a community to help with avoiding these mistakes.

Why is the discord server seems to be with no activity? I only see announcement section and the FAQ section.

Sorry, we will do a final update after the PCB of the new Flex structure is updated (just a day or two, then go to Discord to update the full information).

GB links and Q&A are also being edited.

I did reacted on the FAQ post but nothing happened. Removing the react and adding it again fixes the issue.

Thanks!

The only thing I would like to see back from the Think 6.5v2 GB is separate shipping costs/options for those that are close to SZ, CN.

Is the cream similar in tone to Rama's soya?

The cream seems to be more white than Rama's soya colorway which looks more beige to me. I think this vid shows the board in a good white light (obviously it will look different in different color temps and qualities).

Hello (or good evening at this point) !
Anyway, i'm pretty new in the custom keyboard community and i looked recently for buying me sa new one. And i saw the video of Wildcat assembling and showing that keyboard : the Space80 Apollo. And i love him so much  he is so freaking cool !
So i send this message for knowing is the interest check is over, is it possible to choose wich componant we want (like just keeping the case or pcb), if ISO PCB exist on this and how does it cost ?

Thank you if you answer my question and have a nice day !

Hate to break it to you, but the Space80 GB already happened, best you can hope for (without resorting to aftermarket) is keep an eye on their website for extras after all the deliveries have been settled.

Me sitting in may 2023 praying that there will be a Space80 R2 in the future. I wasn't around in the hobby when the first happened. That would be so cool of gray studio to do.

it's been brought up in the GS discord a few times and it appears Potter wants to move away from the Space series, to explore new designs.

Dam ok thank you for the info <3 I appreciate it.

Just thinking out loud. But why not both? The space seems like a really popular board and would sell, But I get wanting to get a way from a project. I guess if its not about money and is about creating cool boards that makes sense too.

Either way still a really cool board and I keep an eye out on the aftermarket for a cream one.
