Title: [IC] Saturn-60: High-Profile Steel Keyboard [GB ordering closed]
Post by: BirgusLatro on Mon, 25 May 2020, 12:46:21
Hey GeekHack!
I am proud to present to you my retro-inspired steel mechanical keyboard with a handle.

It's called the Saturn-60

The Group Buy is moving to production! Check the thread below for updates
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=109090.0

The base kit price is $200.  GB will run for 30 days, unless 500 units are sold earlier. A kit comes with all parts you need to build a Saturn-60 except for switches, stabilizers, and keycaps.
If you are on a budget, feel free to just order plates + PCBs since those could be used outside of the case for a minimalist 60% build.
Color options are pictured below.  Two-toned orders are ok, and you can upgrade the finish of your plate, handle and badges.

Plate options: Plain Aluminum, Black Anodized Alum, Yellow Zinc Plated Steel, Stainless Steel.
Handle Options: Plain Aluminum, Black Anodized Alum, Stainless Steel, Brass
Stainless or Brass Badges
*Default Kit comes with: brushed aluminum Purist plate + clear anodized alum handle + Stainless badges + Titan60.
Saturn-60 is a Bottom-Mounted Keyboard with gasket isolation, and has a floating foam frame that dampens the upper plate and chassis vibrations.

Layouts?
The Saturn-60 should be able to support the most popular 60% layouts using different plates:
ANSI/ISO, 5x15 Ortholinear, 5x14 Boardwalk
Here are the Layouts:

PCB?
A custom PCB was designed that can fit any standard 60% case.  Its name is Titan60.  We are working on the QMK and VIA support now.
It has a Type C connector and supports the layouts shown above.  Here are renderings and proto pics:

Who is the manufacturer?
A sheet metal fabrication shop in Southern California that does millions of parts per year.  We have met with them and we have confidence in being able to produce this keyboard.  Their stated lead time is around 6-8 weeks.  Note: the pictured prototypes were not made by them, but a machinist friend. New protos have been received as of 9/2/2020 and look very close to ready for production.

How many units will be made?
The MOQ is 100 but the GB will be unlimited.  This round will be limited to 500 units. Extras may or may not be available.

Cost?
Target cost is between $125-175 $200 for a base kit. Extra parts are available, extra kits may or may not be. Our philosophy was to make this simple, affordable and customizable (a Raspberry Pi 4 fits inside)

Can I make suggestions?
Yes of course, and we appreciate all criticism.  PM me if you have a suggestion or want to collaborate!

Handles?
You will be able to choose from Clear or Black anodized aluminum, Stainless Steel, or Brass.
Otherwise, there will be an option without a handle and the holes to mount them with.

GB Plan:

Vendors:
AceKeyboard.co -- North + South America
CandyKeys.com -- Europe + Asia
DailyClack.com -- Australia + NZ
Date for GB is Friday 16.10.2020
I plan to send an email to those that have already "reserved" one using the IC form or the sign up list and allow them to checkout before the GB opens for FCFS.
Email will be sent to confirm the list within a week.

Thank you!  We were going for those mainframe vibes.  If I were any good at rendering I'd do a bunch of different colors and keycap sets.

Hey GeekHack!
Several months ago my friend infected me...

I think is looks really cool! How is the typing feel and sound on the prototype? :)

The painted versions are nice! It would be cool with an old school logo, like the one you had on an image in the google form!

WHAT IN THE HOLLY F

Haha

Thanks for the feedback!  I am working on a logo / badge design for it, but I am an engineer not a graphic designer so my skills are a bit rough :P
The typing feel is very nice, and the sound is a bit different than what I am used to because this is my first time using "Silent" switches.  Next prototype build I will be using regular type switches.

With the right top/layout, this would be amazing to put some vintage Russian keys on. I'm very interested in this.

Thank you!   ;D  Working on a render to show that this keyboard could have a two-tone colorway thanks to the two piece construction.

Basically there are little hooks on the top half of the case that latch into the slots in the bottom half and work like a hinge.

Thank you so much!!! I think it's one of those products that people either love or hate at first sight.  I am so open to supporting Boardwalk in fact that I've already created a plate for it, and have talked briefly with the Boardwalk people about getting a handful of PCBs to be able to support this GB.

That's really exciting! Later I saw the Boardwalk plate option in the IC survey. :)

That KAT RTTY set in the first render looks interesting. Not sure if I've seen an IC for it on here. Boardwalk support for that would be cool as heck too.

So I just ordered the GMK Nuclear Data keycaps from dixie, which was my first group buy. Could anyone quickly explain to me what all these lead times mean? At this point could I expect to be able to order and get this keyboard in the next year? Sorry, this is all new to me, but I am very excited about my real big boy build and this would make the data caps very well.

For a Group Buy, the estimated leadtimes are usually stated in the product page.
The Saturn-60 Group Buy is not-yet open, but I hope to be able to take orders in August.  After that, the keyboards will be produced and sent out.  The approximate lead time between conclusion of GB orders and product delivery is about 8 weeks.
For GMK Nuclear Data it lists the estimated shipping time to be Q2 2021.   Their leadtime is much longer because GMK has a big backlog of custom keycap sets to produce

Hope this was helpful.

There's a USB 3.0 panel cable that goes into the case - if someone wanted to have an HDMI output, etc, they would have to drill a hole on the back wall or notch the bottom edge for cables to escape

very interested -- this has garnered a lot of interest from my friends (and i think i've talked about it 3 separate times on my stream), i'm just worried about whether or not you have a vendor

the logistics of running a group buy are often greatly overestimated by first time runners, but this is one of the coolest projects i've seen in a while and i'll probably go in for one regardless

also my vote goes to army/forest green for the "wildcard" color, not enough dark color options

I had already commented on your og reddit post, but this is awesome. Def into a beige boardwalk build.

Only two notes: Would you consider any options to include sound dampeners in the kit (for extra)?

This case design in pure steel would sound be a bit rough without any..

Also, would love a version of this with a thick rotary encoder on right corner opposite to the badge, would be pretty sick!

Thank you for the support!  I agree that plain steel would not be ideal acoustically.  To combat this I have 3 locations planned for sound dampening inside the case, and I am acquiring samples of various materials to try in each location on the protos.

1.    {Between the plate and the case where it mounts} (https://imgur.com/2Pfmz59)
2.    {On the top case half pushing down on the plate} (https://imgur.com/bafYXGM) (foam will be on short sides of the case too)
3.    Between plate and PCB (a la MKUltra)

The badge is actually optional so people can decide where they want to put it (Stainless/Brass backed with 3M industrial adhesive).

I know the logistics are going to be difficult.  I have been talking to a few of the well-known vendors and they are interested but want to see the new prototypes first.
I will see what they have to say before making a decision on how exactly to run the GB.  When I know more, I'll share with all.

I'm excited for this. Would love to use a Boardwalk, but since they're not hotswap, there's always a risk that it could get bricked and require hours of desoldering before I recover that special bent steel plate inside. So maybe XD75 would be a safer bet, but not as nice IMO.

Also, if I want to include a PI, doesnot it need output holes in the back?

I'm excited for this. Would love to use a Boardwalk, but since they're not hotswap, there's always a risk that it could get bricked and require hours of desoldering before I recover that special bent steel plate inside. So maybe XD75 would be a safer bet, but not as nice IMO.

I am actually working on a product to make de-soldering MX switches easier, but no timeline or details ready to share as of now.

Can split shift/fn be an option on the ANSI layout?

Yes. Both L & R shifts will be able to split

Woah! This is turning into one of the sexiest boards I have ever seen.
I surely hope you can manage a EU vendor. I am quite sure you would have a lot of sales here.

Thank you!  Will definitely keep everyone in the loop.

Also, if I want to include a PI, doesnot it need output holes in the back?

A RasPi won't be "included" but just able to fit inside the case.  I might add some half circle cutouts on the bottom case for cables to pass through the back

I think Mkultra.click is working on a hotswap boardwalk. Please keep boardwalk compatibility. I have mine millmaxed.

Will there be standoff holes on the bottom for mounting a rpi? Or just mounting tape to the bottom of the case?

It might be neat to have a square panel cut out, that we can break off, so that we can 3d print a little bracket for the rpi.
Something kinda like this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1793758, but mounting it sideways and exposing the video, audio, and power.

The Serial Plate holes are the same pattern/dimension as the RasPi4 mounting holes.  <- This was going to be an Easter Egg but I think it makes more sense just to be candid about it.
You are right that knockout plates are probably the easiest way to allow it to be modular, but that would make the design a little too purpose-built and it doesn't look good.

For HDMI/Eth/etc. cables this is what I'm thinking:

I think that’s probably good if you wanna keep the back clean. I guess people can always try to cut into the case if they really want to diy extra port holes.

I might try to get an extra for this purpose if possible. I have a Blokas.io pisound and it would be really cool to have a little all in one pi audio workstation thing.

Quick and dirty update regarding the prototypes I received yesterday:

Good news:
First of all I am typing this message on a Saturn-60 that I just built with Box Jades and a DZ60 [clone] PCB.
I wanted to see how loud and pingy a Saturn-60 would be without any dampening whatsoever, and I was surprised that actually it isn't that bad...reminds me of the way a Model M "sings" but you can call me biased.
I have a handful of foam samples and the next builds will utilize foam and linear or tactile switches.
The plates turned out really well and I am happy with the strength and flexibility of those, despite being aluminium.
Here is a build gallery: https://imgur.com/a/hKkgkBK
The bad news:
The Manufacturer didn't make the top halves correctly but they agreed to remake them since it was their mistake.
What happened is they completely omitted the latching feature from the front part of the top halves, which you can see at the end of the gallery above (this is why the gaps on the side are so big still - the case is just floating due to this issue).
Also, the laser cutting process causes moderate cosmetic damage to the brushed stainless, so I might retract that finish option because QC will be way too hard.

This board looks great! If I had the carpenter skills, I'd make a permanent standing desk and have this keyboard able to pull out.
As for the handle, I'd use magnetic ones to initiate the slide and close when needed.

Target cost is between $125-175 per kit."

I'm so in! This is one of those keebs where SA Keycaps would sit perfectly! Hoping for WKL layout :)

When is GB?

Nice!!!   GB hopefully this month BUT is potentially needing to get bumped back because the prototypes had some issues. I also need to get those and the other fine details of the design sorted out.  I'm trying to fix the problems before starting GB instead of taking everyone's money and then working out the kinks.

Excellent!  I still don't have a firm date for the GB yet, but the issue with the protos is causing it to be pushed back nonetheless.

Love this design. Would love to be able to fit a solenoid in there.

I have had a couple of people ask about solenoid support.  Still undecided on whether the PCB will support or not.  But either way I think that the solenoid seems like more of a liability to add to the PCB than a benefit.

LOVE this thing! I may get a RasPi4 and learn how to use it because of this board. Great price point and excellent design!

Thank you so much!  The more refined this board gets, the harder it is to stay on target for cost, but I am trying to only do things that I feel are "worth it", like badges and sound dampening.

This reminds me of a very specific system keyboard from the early 1980's but I can't remember what it was called.  Even the logo is the same style.

The logo style was inspired by UNIVAC, which is much older than the 80s so maybe not be what you are thinking of... but I am curious to see so let me know if you remember it

Happy Saturnday GeekHack!  I have a few updates to share with you:

Next week:
About the Titan60 PCB:
Layouts supported using 2 different plates: "Purist" and "Utilitarian".
Q. Why make this custom PCB if it is just a normal 60% layout?
A. First, because I linked up with an excellent PCB designer and we can provide it in the GB for cheaper than an off-the shelf one. Second, I want to support RGB side-glow for the vents on the sides of the case. Third, because it looks cool.
Q. Can I still use my own 60% PCB?
A. Yes. DZ60, AN-C, Zeal-60 and many other "Pok3r" PCBs should work.  But the USB interlink cable included will only be Type C.
Q. What about ortho users?
A. I still plan to offer Boardwalk PCBs (and plates) during the GB.

Custom Foam and Gaskets
(https://i.imgur.com/cJf6RVo.jpg)
The thicker one installs above the plate, the thinner one goes below.

Updates from behind the scenes:
After I received the last round of protos, I was unhappy with the quality of the stainless laserwork and with my design for the front latch mechanism.
I spent the past weeks redesigning it to be more easily manufactured, and more user friendly.  The issue was that the hinge would cause significant scraping during assembly/disassembly. So I changed the front to have a flange with clinch nuts. This means the Top Case assembles directly from above, and should no longer significantly rub.
Pics to illustrate the new front edge design:

(Bottom Gasket not shown)

Huge props to u/JaffaScript for designing both Saturn badges, PCB graphics, and currently working on the company logo.
Huge props to u/wild_sitcom_episode/ for the PCB design.

You know I am definitely in for this, but I just had an idea: old typewiters similar to this used to have these cover shells that you could snap on to protect it while you carried your typewriter around.
I'll bet something like that would be a really snazzy option for this. you could have it loop over and under the front and just have a strap to the back to hold it closed.

Probably not something everyone is interested in, but it would be a really cool option.

I glanced at this IC when it first went live but got no further than the renders before I clicked away assuming the kit would cost the earth. Taking a second look I think this thing would absolutely amazing if it comes in anywhere near the targeted price point. I love the white top/black bottom render, reminds me of a prop from 70's sci-fi.

Thank you! Sorry I missed replying to your comment earlier.  Working with sheetmetal is very tricky because it is more like origami than carving material into a precise shape.  Each fold has an effect on the next.

That new proto is looking really good!
Thank you!  Still not perfect but very close.  Issues with this round are as follows:
-The very high position of the switches in the assembly is because I built this unit with an older revision plate - the new revision plates are 3.5mm lower so the caps will be sit lower in the case.

-The Mfg. used the wrong radii for some of the bends, so the fit (gaps) are very close but the case halves do not sit as flat as they should.
But, it is significantly better than the previous round.

-The interconnect cable is hard to plug into the PCB because it is very close to where it attaches to the back of the case.  Moving the USB connector to the opposite side of the case will solve this problem.

Finally not made in China :thumb:

Both badge finishes (stainless and brass) will be available for the GB.  The Saturn badge attaches with 3M LSE adhesive and the Serial Data plate attaches with included M3 hardware - both are installed by the customer.

Looks super sick!! Since you mentioned fitting a RPi in there, any thoughts about cooling, options to fit ports somewhere?

Thank you very much!  Sorry I am a little behind on the geekhack replies - for the RPi cooling I did not really make any special provisions, but I suppose it is possible to mount it to the case with some thermal paste.  For ports, I have created a breakoff tab on the bottom of the case that can be used to pass cables through.

Super dope, definitely considering getting one for the price. Not sure if it has been asked but can you mix and match the colors like that one white render?

Yes, as one person replied, two toned ordering will be perfectly acceptable.  Thank you for the compliment!

Can't wait to see this hit GB status! Waiting for my turn.

Also, why is the Vendor website for the US still not up? Will it go live once the GB starts? I really want this, but don't want to order from overseas....

Wait 4.5h from now for EarlyBird Sale to complete (if I get the timing right), then it should be unlocked

Yep - the GB sites are going live at 6PM GMT+0  I am going to make a GB thread now.

Is it compatible with other PCB such as Insta60 or DZ60?

HHKB please
Thank you for saying please!  I'm not opposed to it -  I am willing to do other R5 options depending on interest.

Looks like this didn't happen in the end?

Does this case fit any standard 60% PCB, so, say, for example, I wanted to use an ANSI Layout Hotswap PCB?

Since the USB is a passthrough, it should be able to use any 60% PCB. Just pick the correct plate for your layout. The purist plate should work for most PCB's, but the utilitarian plate should be used if you're using a 2U left shift

I"m new to all this.  Are the switches swappable?  Or do I have to solder them?

If you buy the PCB from them, you'd have to solder. However, you should be able to use any hotswappable 60% PCB

I dig it. Not sure that i would get, but its a unique build for sure. The more plain builds just don't excite me quite as much, but i get more detail-work would take away from the space-camp/ space-race tech vibe.

She’s here and she’s solid asf!!  I expected it to sound hollow but the design along with the included foam makes it sound like a solid aluminum board. Excellent EXCELLENT QC to boot. This is my new endgame! 😍🥰

Laced her with some alpacas, Durock v2 stabs lubed with krytox, and SA Royal. I’m in love.
Here are a ome potato glamour shots for your viewing pleasure.
