This is the interest check for Derivative, a 60% keyboard. There was an very small run of in-stock initial units (Round 0) during Fall 2021, but there have been some design changes I've contemplated since then. I also wanted to share this IC in case some were looking to pick up the board - this is basically to say that there WILL be another run, and I hope to make it far more available than it currently is.

Shipping estimate is the standard GB fare, aiming for approximately Q4 2023 - Q1 2024 for shipping.

Design Info


Whenever I sit down and begin a new design, I always look to incorporate at least one distinct feature that gives the keyboard a sense of identity. One of the biggest challenges in keyboard design for me is creating something that is unique / different, while keeping design cues intentional and avoiding too overbearing complexity. Derivative features a sleek and layered side profile with contrasting curves mirroring one another. These are some key details that were considered in Derivative's design.

On the top face is a long, sweeping front lip that bows gently outwards towards the center. It gives Derivative a defining feature visible from a working angle, while reducing the front height of the board ever so slightly.

With Derivative, I've added an accompanying bevel (similar to Geon's awesome Frog) on the side profile that lines up directly with the front-lip to avoid that. The board's side profile is a shelf design, curved downward into the table. Beneath the shelf, there's a secondary curve in the base that turns away from the table - the two opposing curves work nicely together. The secondary curve is not a result of a stepped side profile, but a direct transition into the large filleted corners.

The R1 weight is now longer and more proportional. A recurring request was for the two-piece weight to return, so it will be returning with improvements.

I'm not an engineer by day - so custom keyboard case design may be the one of the only things I dabble with where fractions of a millimeter make such a core difference between having a functional case and a complete headache.

The side profile of Derivative features a shelf design that cuts directly into the bottom of the case. In order to have a shelf design, there's a minimum thickness required for the shelf otherwise the side profile cuts  a hole straight into the bottom case (that is, if I want to keep the super thin side bezels). This became a careful, frustrating battle between three things - keyboard height, internal clearance beneath the PCB, and minimum shelf thickness to retain the 'shelf' side profile. If you've designed a keyboard, you know exactly what I'm talking about :D

In the end, I opted to give the modifier switches minimal internal clearance - this buys the case more material for the shelf to cut into. Towards the center, the case internals opens up and give additional room for the alphas to flex where it actually matters.

Derivative's compact plate design allows for three practical mounting styles to choose from - classic top mount, a far more flexible relief mount (only viable on materials such as aluminum, carbon fiber, etc), and large o-ring gasket mount.

Personally would prefer darker shades for a few of the colors (green, purple and red), but can respect if you want to keep things light and bright for this run.

Sorry - I tend to prefer uploading images in square aspect ratio because Geekhack seems to limit the maximum width of an image, so hopefully the following upload helps! It's either a 4-point relief mount, or 4/5-point top-mount.

This diagram should clarify the mounting points (other side of plate is a direct mirror), along with any confusion about what "relief" mount is. It's been called leaf-spring a few times but I just call it this - because it's essentially a top mount, supported by a giant relief cut that allows the plate to bend against long arms.

The manufacturer let me know that they won't be doing that color code for me anymore because it created a good number of b-stocks - so that color won't return. Also usually for any R0 / small runs, I typically won't repeat the same colors or weight designs so that people still get that feeling of having an early bird edition :-)

Purple is a bit too bright / vibrant for my eyes, so probably will have that toned down slightly.

Regarding the naming, you guys are on the dot - I named it Derivative because new boards are usually variations of existing boards. I can agree with some of the similarities, but I don't see a Corsa side.. though if I'm honest, I believe a keyboard is almost always going to have some basic atomic features that you can't avoid, for the sole fact that it's a keyboard. No matter how you break things down, some things are going to remain constant... like the fact that most are shaped like rectangles, have a weight, have handles to pick it up by, etc - that aren't super specific to one particular board; on the other hand some beautiful cues have clear originators, like the Jane's iconic backplate, the super clean Koala curve, etc.

Hi folks, just want to announce some decisions that I ended up moving towards for this project. I mulled it over and want this project to be the best it can be for its upcoming run. I estimate all will be ready to go some time in Q1 2023.

- I have decided to bring back the two-piece weight design from the original run. I had originally wanted to cut down on that in this run to help reduce the cost, as well as help differentiate the original units from the upcoming. I realized that this was artificially limiting the design; the contrasting polished steel logo was a really nice touch from the original IMO and ultimately decided to continue to improve and put out the best product I can, rather than dial it back.

- Bottom case has been redesigned. The through-weight's external dimensions have been modified to be noticeably longer, creating better proportions with the bottom case. In addition there's a 'moat' added around the weight on the bottom case, to increase the apparent dimensions of the weight - this is done because I've already increased the weight dimensions to their limits, and needed to extend the weight's 'design' without actually stretching the weight further.Originally the name of the board was present on the weight's corners, balanced by the "R0" engraving. Since there's no R0, the "DERIVATIVE" engraving is added to the bottom of the case.

- Internal design of the weight has been reworked to center around the screws, especially now that I've decided to keep the two-piece weight.

- The previously rendered colors have been scrapped. I'm going to be selecting new colors that I find more interesting and 'sophisticated'. I want this project to be versatile as both an enthusiast board, and to be able to imagine it as a premium keyboard sitting in an office - the bold, bright, and saturated colors will likely take a backseat.

After some difficult decision-making and deliberation, I've decided to drop the expected dark gray color in order to offer two shades of primary colors. Reason being, it was clear that demand for dark gray custom boards has been pretty low in my previous projects. In addition, I've used that same shade of dark gray for the past two boards now and plan to use it again in the future... so we're switching it up here to create a more well-rounded color selection on Derivative R1.

Renders for all colors and layouts have been added to the main post. For those who haven't seen or heard, the final list of colors that I've ordered for prototypes is:

Huh? Looks pretty close to render blue. There was another blue proto he had done, but it was like teal/green/blue. That was a mistake or something and not the intended blue or green. So is that what you mean?

nvm the new one ano one looks like striker blue and the render looks like masterpiece blue
