Hello all,

Today I'd like to introduce you to a project that I've been gradually working on for the past year or so:

GMK Darling

Inspired by the character Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx, GMK Darling aims to bring her aesthetics straight to your keyboard
It's taken a long while to get the colors dialed in, but they are quite close to -- if not in -- their final iteration now as far as I can take them with renders.
Hiragana sublegends may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the use of icon mods hopefully prevents the set from becoming overcrowded.

Colorway

Updated 4/29/19: 7422C is now the alpha color as opposed to 691C, which was too grey.

GMK Darling utilizes three custom colors:

RAL 3020 as the alpha text color; a vivid red reminiscent of Zero Two's horns

Pantone 7422C; a pastel-pale pink which reflects Zero Two's hair color, used for the alpha cap color and the legend color on the mods.

RAL 3003 as the mod cap color; a darker red similar to Zero Two's dress uniform and darker parts of her flight suit

GMK WS1 for the white accents



Hey the sun finally came out! Here's 7422C. Color balance/temperature for this picture is considerably better than the last one.

I do have some concern as to color matching and am unsure how GMK would handle dealing with both RAL and Pantone colors.
However, the RAL light pink (3015) was simply not light enough for this project.

I'll definitely consider icon arrow 1.5u backspace. I think that legend might be an artifact from when I was trying to get KBRenders to get certain arrows to show up, but I do also like the box backspace.
The R3 control will be normal, just a hiccup in the render on that one, I've updated the OP to reflect that.

Another suggestion via the form was pink arrow keys, which is a neat idea.

Full icon modifiers except Escape, nav cluster (caveat below), and Num Lock?
- Nav cluster icons is fine with me if the entire set is icons (not a fan of them, but I like consistency).
- If it's a mix of the text Escape and Num Lock -or- we get a text bottom row, staying text Nav is totally okay with me.
And will the set have the following missing furigana: 3, 4, 5, E, Z, and /
Would you consider not having the nav on numpad? Even front printing would be nice if you have to have it on there.

Hey everyone,

There's been a lot of discussion about mod legends so I figured it might be a good idea to share some of that process.


The original plan was text mods, but hopefully this 'old' render helps demonstrate why icon mods were chosen. All text mods feels a bit cramped and complicated.


However, for the sake of consistency icon nav seems to go better with all icon mods. I think this will be the approach going forward, but please let me know what you think!
Unfortunately KLE-renderer and therefore KB-renders fails to show the PgDn legend properly and a couple others, so more detailed renders will have to wait until I can talk to someone to get them done professionally.


Additionally, if there is going to be a mix of icon mods and text nav, this is another option: text bottom row, as some have asked for.

Kits-wise:
So far on the google form, 72% of people said they would prefer a set with a separate kit for ISO or numpad. That's pretty compelling, but there have only been 37 responses to the form itself thus far.
Novelties - going to be adding an R3 enter key novelty in all likelihood, still brainstorming a design for that one.
Spacebars - 6u centered and off-center stems will be covered once I get a chance to edit it.

Also, just wanted to say thank you for all the positive and constructive criticism so far. I was definitely not expecting this level of positive feedback, but it's extremely motivating.

If it makes you feel any less concerned about this, I have multiple color chips on the way from Pantone. 691 C and 7422 C, the latter of which is more saturated. I went for 691C for the IC because it seems a safer option, but I will be comparing them directly once the chips arrive.

Artwork for novelties is well on the way to completion, the 1.5/1.25u, Enter, and one of the two styles of 1u R1 novelties are done.
I also received the Pantone chips for 7422C and 691C on Friday. Going forward I'll be sticking with 7422C and will update the rest of the IC tomorrow to reflect this. 691C is close but is a bit too grey. Also, I might bring the color of the mods up a shade or two but I'll determine that once I have daylight to work with.

If anyone has suggestions for services which can render the corrected hiragana legends please feel free to suggest them.

Here's an image of the chips side by side under ~5500K lighting. I did what I could to adjust the whitepoint in GIMP, but I'll take some better pictures tomorrow in the light of day. Picture was taken with a Galaxy Note 8. The 691C chip is a bit darker than this image suggests.

We'll see, once I have a vendor I'll be able to figure out pricing and from there figure out the kit structure as to potentially breaking off the numpad, etc.

Thanks for all the kind words! There is some work to be done still, but I do have a vendor! Price estimates are forthcoming and I will announce vendors, proxies, and pricing simultaneously as one larger update.
I don't have renders for these just yet (they're paid for but I don't want to bother Janglad with revisions too much, and I'm waiting on one piece of novelty art still) but this is the current state of the novelties and the 40%/compat/text mod kit:

HB = Headband
XX = XX Novelty
HL = Horn heft
HR = Horn right
Blue legends = GMK V4 stock color
R1, R1, R3, R4, R4
The cap abbreviation/text here is for organizational purposes only and will be replaced for the actual novelties in the final renders/set.

There is also a novelty in the works that resembles the back of the instrument cluster on 02's suit which may replace either the 1u R4 XX or one of the 1.25u R4 novelties. If the kit ends up being too expensive as is, I'll see what I can do to reduce cost while keeping the spirit of the kit, which may involve dropping some of the white novelties or HL/HR.

(IMHO Symbol-only mods were the only rational choice  )

I think the novelties and how they look will become a bit clearer once the renders are done for that kit. The KLE admittedly looks a bit scrappy because the abbreviations are there just to keep it organized.

There will be a spacebar kit available. Also I've added a 1u R2 Esc tenatively to 40% compat, was meaning to but forgot. i'm not 100% sure that GMK has an icon legend for this, but I'll talk to my vendor and find out.

This is something I am currently addressing, actually. Non-JIS ISO with sublegends is a weird situation

To follow on the subject, EnjoyPBT Kiro/Shiro set (further down in this forum section) introduced the following keycaps:

@'け and ~#む¥ for ISO compatibility, plus \|む¥ as well as Zつっ and Eいぃ, while it sticked to R1 \| only in the ISO part of the set,

where it differs from your proposed set.

I am too, I'd like to keep it if I can but I need to figure out pricing through my vendor with/without it first. Adding custom molds to the base kit for it is sure to affect pricing.

That also being said, it still has generic ISO support. I'd rather have generic ISO support than a base kit with none, or one that costs some significant amount more for the sake of UK-ISO.

I think an ergodox/splitboard option where one half is the red/pink/white and the other side is blue/black would be cool, but probably near impossible to hit MOQ.

Unfortunately not on the same cap, GMK can't do tripleshot molding as far as I'm aware.

I appreciate the interest! My NA vendor and I still haven't received a quote from GMK as to pricing yet, so things aren't 100% set in stone and we're still figuring out proxies across the board. New update today everyone - novelty/spacebar/extension kit renders and a new IC form that reflects the changes. The old IC form was pretty disorganized, so hopefully this helps clean things up a bit.

Also just got word from my vendor that they've received quotes from GMK so that's another step closer to pricing/vendor announcements!

Yeah, as best Janglad could recreate them. We used some nav icon images of Red Honey as a reference. KLE is just *very* bad at displaying them, but I should have an actual base kit render sorted soon (ish). Another HB-CP render is also in the works to show the updated 1.5u 'headband' novelty that's shown in the novelties render.

Also as a side-note, I got permission from Janglad/Dixie to use the updated icon mods from 8008/9009 R3 on this set, which most of the renders have reflected (other than CapsLock) already.

Rather significant update this evening!

• Newly updated renders for all boards to reflect proper icons and arrows. For reference, the set will be using Janglad's updated icon mods but OG GMK arrows.
• Mod color F-keys have been cut from extension to reduce cost and kit bloat
• Added base kit render
• Added alphas kit with render

Hopefully I'll have final pricing soon, but expect an update with pricing, vendors, proxies and final GB date announcements within the next month or so!

The goal of doing this was to make the spacebars kit as affordable as possible. Also, the Alice layout is still relatively niche, and there seems to be some overlap between the demographic of people who want an Alice-layout boards and those who want text bottom row mods.

Really nice to see two deskmats with this! Love the cherry blossom theme in the first one.

But there are some things I'd like to say about the mats though.

The first one looks kinda like it's been painted over a picture (looking at the path vs everything else) and the base of some of the trees seem to stop at nothing. I would have added a bit more greenery to hide the bottom of them. There's also the areas with what I assume to be a white flower brush? It gives the illusion that it's the white canvas peeking out.

The second one looks more stylised but you can see the colour bleed through and the lineart opacity seems a bit low for lineart purposes.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here, wanted to help with offering feedback.
