I'm never, ever using Gaterons again

Wobbly and they sometimes they bind when I press them on the very front of the keycap.

Vintage blacks are the only switch I like anymore.

What keycaps are you using? I know gaterons wobble a bit more than MX but I can't get my gat clears to bind with Cherry profile.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

I actually enjoyed Gateron switches until they started dying on me unexpectedly.
I still have one with Gat greens that are running fine, but almost all the Gateron boards I've had have just stopped working properly.

The catching of the front of the keycap with cherry profile caps is actually a common issue that was corrected on the most recent revisions of gateron designs. IIRC Zealios also don't have this problem.

I'm not sure what rev. they are since I got a big bag of them from a user on mechmarket. It's not happening on any alphas, only on a few non-critical keys which is alright I guess. Just annoying to have it happen at all.

Varmilo will build a board with Gaterons if you want but they are no longer providing warranties for them.

The last few Varmilo Massdrops were also absent of Gateron options.

This should speak volumes.

Don't sweat it too much. It really doesn't happen unless you try and make it happen. Also, as others have stated, the problem was most likely addressed.

I'm guessing that by "bind" OP means get stuck at the bottom of the stroke.

I've never had this problem, but then again, I've never used Cherry profile caps on any of my Gateron boards.

Sorry for the unclear communication of the word 'binding'

Catching would probably be a better word to use.

What was happening was something was catching at the very top of the keypress. I'm assuming it was the very front part of the keycap stem on the top housing, but I'm not 100% sure. It would basically stop you from depressing the stem at all unless you wobble the switch slider a little bit so it won't catch anymore.

see ****ty MS paint diagram of what I think is happening:

Its catching because you are using old milky tops or oldold clear tops

new revisions don't have this issue at all

That's good to hear. I'm using Gat Blues and so far no issues with them.

or you can consider to choose the kailh keyswitch ;D
According to input club, they are the best switches in mass production. I would buy a version of their new clicks in a heartbeat if they were more tactile.

Yeah, they seem pretty decent.
Excuse my maybe ignorant question but will they be exclusive to the input club keyboards?

I concur that vintage blacks are great; but, in all fairness, gats are not that bad.

As a long time Gateron user I think I must contribute to this thread.

Yes Gateron is not perfect but I like them very damn much, in fact I don't own any cherry board at the moment. Also I have zero problem with them, with any keycap profile.

I think Op's problem was explained by others already so this is just my 2c about Gateron, so that anyone planning to use them won't be afraid of using one of the smoothest and most economical switch out there :)

IMO you get what you pay for.

I mean, there's a reason why gaterons cost barely half of price of OG MX. For me, the difference is that Cherry has a solid track record: I can trust their 30-year-old switches and if I take a decades-old G80, I can be relatively certain the keys will be nice. In case of gaterons, I have no such confidence, and that affects switches made within the timespan of only a couple of years from now.

Kaihua appears to be much more serious lately, and I sincerely hope Gateron joins them, but thus far? The only thing they have going for them is relative smoothness… otherwise, it's not dissimilar to previous generations of kaihuas and the vendor reports are pretty much confirming that.

Sure, other than the fact that Kailh is coming out with Dust/Water resistant switches, Tactile speed switches, Linear clicky switches, switches that do the best they can to mimic Topre, RGB MX Clear switches etc ... not too dissimilar from previous Kailh at all ...

Of course none of these interest me - my desire is the new Kailh Choc Mini (PG1350) switches.

This may have been addressed but I am too lazy to read all the way through...

Have you taken the tops off? If so, you may have bent them and need new tops. That happen to me.

No, there'll be drops for just the switches. Probably after the K Type lands though, so I went for K type to get the switches

hmm, I'm not quite sure what you mean by bent, but I no longer have the board anyhow. I don't think they were damaged as they were brand new and all I did was lube them.

Well, unfortunately I've bought 140 Gat yellows from KBDFans, lubed 70 of them, put them in my QXP60 and they are binding as hell. It seems that they are selling super old switches or perhaps I am just cursed.

IIRC only the Milky housing gaterons had issues binding, and that was only with GMK/OG Cherry keycaps.
