I'm expecting a portal round2 with those keys and more colour. I'll probably buy three sets, then 'cause of how good the first set turned out. I still thing orange/blue portals as modifiers flanking the spacebar is a good idea.

I imagine the "new" six-point empire one is copyrighted, but is the "older" eight point republic one as well?

You damn right. Screw that rebel scum.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

agreed.  dyesub on a white key would work too, but then you're forced to use a white key... and that only really works if all your keys are white.

Or checkered board.
I have F5-8 replaced with my custom "Haz" keycap on my Black Filco. It looks pretty good.

Know what would be really cool? Minecraft Keycaps.

I would so be in on that, but I have too much on my plate right now, with the novelty GB finishing, the riddler question mark going into the 2nd phase, and another special GB that's going to be happening soon for everyone.

I would so do a IC for that :P

Go check with melissa if they'll do it. The IC would most likely end up with tons of people wanting it.

If someone else wants to do it, that would be cool as well.

I was thinking having some Star Wars: The Old Republic keycaps would be cool.
Something like this: http://http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SgqJX9ZGgpw/ThDDsCUIRGI/AAAAAAAAFHw/Bw-Opscq6yE/s1600/galacticrepublic_logo.png
And this: http://nerdrepository.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/logo-sith-empire.png
Also, I'd be extremely interested in some Minecraft animal and mob keycaps.
EDIT: Giant pictures, so I'll just post links.

Well, I wasn't thinking about DS but maybe something like PBT dyesub since that seems to be the rage these days and that should be easy in China since they don't care about copyright issue.  Also nowhere in OP does it mention anything about doubleshot keycaps.  This is just an idea and where to get it done.

The main thing I have against ABS is that the ABS doublesht keycaps from SP are super thin. Also, PBT feel better usually.

I really want a lot of thick PBT dyesubs with the hacker emblem on them. Preferably less than what I'm paying for round4 doubleshots.

Why not make Key-caps with Letters/Numbers cut through the actual Cap.......?
« Reply #81 on: Tue, 17 January 2012, 20:41:24 »
So far, every keycap in existence is about having Letters/Numbers printed onto the keycaps in various colours and shapes.

Why not make a set of Key-caps that have a plain Helvetica-style typeface through the Plastic Caps.  Or maybe even Metal?

So that as you type you can actually feel the empty recess of the Letter or Number.  You can use the Key-caps with a normal keyboard or use it with an illuminated Keyboard.

You won't waste money on printing or double-shots and only have one colour whether it's all Black or even all White coloured Keys.

The trick will be how to manufacture the actual Key-cap recess to a reasonable finish.  I would dearly like to see it made out of full Metal (ie. Silver and Gold).

That's just my latest "Stupid-Idea" thank you for at least allowing me to air it here on Geekhack.

The actual connection to the keyswitch itself takes up most of the space on the inner face of the top of the keycap, so you'd have to make a pretty small, off-centre legend if you wanted the hole to be completely see-through (and not obstructed by where key stem goes in). Engraved keycaps are similar to this idea, I guess.
Current collection:
Filco Majestouch 104-Key, w/ MX Browns
IBM Model M 52G9700
Leopold FC200R, "white" w/ MX Clears
Ducky DK9008S \'Shining\', white backlit w/ MX Blues
Cherry G80-3494(LCYUS-2), w/ MX Reds for Portal Mod

Not mine, but I\'ve got access to:
Filco Majestouch Linear R Limited Edition, w/ MX Reds
Filco Majestouch 2 \'Ninja\' Tenkeyless, w/ MX Blues
Leopold FC500R, w/ MX Browns

Exactly, if you notice KBC Poker 40% keyboards they all have a relatively small font size in the far left corner of the key-space.  That's all that's needed.  The Cherry-stem stays where it is then it comes to the creativity of the designer to come up with a Typeface and/or Symbols for the rest of the Key-set.

Why not move the typeface off to the side.....?
« Reply #85 on: Tue, 17 January 2012, 21:10:04 »
Also why not move the actual print off the finger surface, to the sides of the Key?

That means no interference from the Cherry-stem.  You already have keys with print on the sides.

I'm just throwing it out there for anyone wanting to actually make key-caps with cut-outs matching all the Letters/Numbers.

And if anyone makes it, please do a 104 keyset, in which I'll stand first in line to lay down my money for it.

I had an idea to make RAISED letters in the molds of the keycaps once. Seemed like an awesome idea, and many thought so. So I got some quotes, and was $500 for each new unique key mold. Pretty excessive. I think unfortunately Elrick, your idea would be similarly cost prohibitive as it would also require a new mold for every unique key. Though I suppose you could also use an 'extreme' engraved approach in theory as well. Not sure if the resulting legend knock out would be as clean. Should be a lot less expensive though.
Other downside is stuck with stencil like font as some letters have a solid space inside, like A, R, etc...
An interesting idea for sure.

Yeah, when everything is geared towards print and double-shots there isn't much incentive to change the status quo of manufacturing.

The Typeface and Symbols I thought of using would be NOIR plus Symbols used in the R4 Double-shot Group buy.  The Symbols are already available and look rather nice.

Also remember, the stencil like look would only affect a few Letters and a few Numbers.  But they will still be recognized.  Plus as you use a Qwerty board layout the shapes of symbols and Typeface will be quite familiar.

Yeah this is just another stupid pipe dream.........

Sure, not trying to **** on anyones rainbow. Some ideas are awesome in theory, but simply so cost prohibitive it makes it impractical. I don't have a problem with stencil or even fonts like
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 37831[/ATTACH]
but you might be surprised by how many people have problems reading them or even recognizing they are standard latin charachters. Was more of a just looking at pros and cons of such a design.
****, people complain about how hard the Black Widow font is to read... I like design for art sake, but in mass production you have to throw art aside often for utility and make it as bland and generic as possible for general acceptance and saleability. Look at failed groupbuys here for excellent examples.

Grab the Klingon font and do up an svg for wasd. I've been toying with getting some 'fake' language like Klingon or Aurebesh or something done up for lols. Pretty sure neither are copyright so shouldn't be a problem.

In addition to being ethical, there's the issue of souring GH's relationship with SP if they find out later that we deceived them.

I'd love to get sphericals like on the old Luxor computers. Black on white, modifiers black on orange.

How would the QWER set work? just the letters like WASD kit?

Yes, or it could be something more inspired. Sky is the limit ;).

I could link people from the League of legends forums if there was to be a group buy, but theres only a small percentage
of the players who own mechanical keyboards I think.
