I like this, any thoughts on how many pages?
I like this idea!Awesome! Asukabook seems to have their own software which is free to download among other design solutions. Check it out and start playing with it and let us know what you think.
I can help with book layout and design when the time comes. I've done a lot of that sort of thing.
As far as the book itself, I'd agree that it needs to be biggish. Especially if it's photo heavy. I know on some sites like BLURB you can do 20 pages starting at 14.99 for a small book and the price goes up depending on size, hardcover or softcover, and amount of pages.
The largest number of 'slides' available on Asukabook is 50, which is 50 pages front and back or 100 pages. I was kinda leaning towards this number as well or the 30 slide version (60 pages), but cost may go up substantially for books of this size. We'll find out once I hear back from them about pricing. They're closed until Jan 3rd.I like this, any thoughts on how many pages?
It's gotta be like, a couple hundred maybe? I'm sure there are more than that many great boards around on all the forums.
I would pick one up for sure. Have you tried connecting with those making the tactile zines?I haven't yet. I want to see what Asukabook has to offer first before hitting traditional publishers. If we end up going the route of a traditional publisher, then that changes the printing stage completely and maybe even the design phase a bit depending on if they want to do the design work in-house.
Would absolutrly pick up one, would prefer larger hardcover. (Eastern US)Very cool! Seems like the 10x10 size is what everyone is leaning towards.
Definitely interested! I agree, large size and hard cover would be highly preferred.Noted! :thumb:
I don't have any professional experience but I'm fairly comfortable using InDesign and Photoshop and did two years of yearbook club at highschool if any help is needed producing pages. I may also be able to get some contacts for publishing.Awesome! Asukabook actually has a plugin for InDesign. Check it out and see what you think:
This would be a great way to quickly expose friends or family to the hobby. The only advice I may have would be to choose the photos wisely; curate. You don't want to overload it with content.Absolutely. And I think a crowdsourced content and curation process will be one of the longest phases of this project.
Sections that document the assembly of a board (like Photek's 360c (https://www.flickr.com/photos/115722906@N08/albums/72157648098547719)) might also be a nice inclusion.
I really like this idea.Yep, except I think the problem we're going to have is getting to many awesome pictures of boards that it's going to be tough to decide what doesn't make the cut. At least that's my hope. :)
Even potentially a few pages of other good or great boards that weren't as wow as the others, but still worth a look (like 6-9 pictures per page for 3 or so pages).

I think that would definitely be a problem, there is definitely a lot of great boards on here. I really like this idea though, I'm hoping to contribute if my boards are deemed worthy. :p
I'd be down for one, hard cover + international shipping  :thumb:Cool! What country?

I think the biggest factor will be the quality of the photography more than just the uniqueness of the board itself, so I believe there's going to be enough variety for everyone. I was even thinking we should maybe contact manufacturers for some of their 'best' photos as well for inclusion. Thoughts?
I was thinking about the workflow to get all the images in one place where we could decide on what makes the cut and what doesn't, and I think the easiest solution would be for each submitter to be able to upload their photos directly to a repository (which I already have). Then we as the community can look at the images and decide what makes the cut and what doesn't. Thoughts?
I'll be travelling for work from Jan 5th-14th and usually don't have time to breathe during that time so if I disappear for a bit don't be alarmed. :thumb:
Fantastic idea, I'd definitely pick one of these up, will have to break out the DSLR and get setup for some good onesSweet! Can't wait to see the submissions.
Perhaps have a voting system for the photos to be put in there? Like have people submit them or suggest people's photos from any thread? How would they be picked?
I feel like there's a surplus of quality photos on here to be honest. As for the manufacturers I don't know if I would necessarily like that myself because I imagine this book to be filled with keyboards of variation and creativity rather than a manufacturers board with boring old keycaps and what not.
Yeah if we could probably upload the images to a single source and have an easy voting system on it then I think that would be great.
Here's my favorite shots of my one board, the TGR-Jane. I just took this recently and actually posted them in a couple threads including my build log. I could always break the board down as well and show the shots of the components and what not. These pics are coming from my Flickr, I can also unedit my watermark for the book as well.

Where do I sign up? There better be a Vol 2.You just did. ;) At least until the official group buy page is set up. This will happen after we get the design completed and pricing in place. I hope there's a volume 2! An annual book would be awesome. ;)
There should be a separate book for just artisans.
I'm thinking that maybe leaving watermarks might be the best way to help attribute credits. Or not. I'd like to hear thoughts on this.
Very cool idea. :thumb: How do you plan to have section the book based on keysets, model of keyboard, layout?Dunno. That's a good question. What's your thoughts? I know the layout guys will probably have some really good ideas on how to organize everything.
Alright well I uploaded the pics to the website, realized after the fact that you can't edit the names so it's just going to be the name my camera gave it when taking the shots. That's alright though since I uploaded the image with watermarks, I think it will actually be better to leave the watermarks to give credit than text on the book page.Thank you!
First off I just want to say that this is an AWESOME idea, and I would love to see it come to fruition (even though my photography skills are crap).I like the idea of having more than just a credit/watermark with a small blurb of what we're looking at (full tech specs) as well as the owner/photographer and the geographic location. But this is more of a layout and design issue, which I'm sadly no expert at. :-XI'm thinking that maybe leaving watermarks might be the best way to help attribute credits. Or not. I'd like to hear thoughts on this.
I think each page should have it's own unmarked spread with a little column or tag somewhere that has a full description of what we're looking at - as well as the photographer's name (maybe location too!). I suppose it could simply be put under the picture as well, depending on how you wish to format the page.
That way pictures are still accredited, we get the full picture in the book, and a little description of what we're seeing for those that aren't able to identify every component of every keyboard.
I'd be really interested to know how you're going to divide the book up :)
Also, I know most people here won't need it - but I was just thinking about a glossary section! If it is indeed meant to be a coffee table book this could be pretty helpful for your guests that aren't as keyboard savvy as the rest of us.
Dunno. That's a good question. What's your thoughts? I know the layout guys will probably have some really good ideas on how to organize everything.
Time to buy a new lens for the camera...
My new goal is to take a sexy enough photo to get in that book -.-

I'd arrange them by the type of switch they are using: buckling spring, MXs, Alps, Topre, Hall effect… It would be nice to have a short introduction of each of these sections explaining the technology used. That makes a lot of sense. :thumb:
Inside these sections, you could arrange them by size/layout. I personally believe that the pictures shouldn't have a watermark but a description of the picture itself with model, case, keycaps, artisans, and obviously the name of the owner of that board.

I think 50mm are the best for these kind of shots.
I can recommend www.acilab.com. My wife works there and has experience in the books department. They have recently been voted the number one photo lab in the country by the PPA (Professional Photographers Association). The owners there Mark and Lisa are amazing people.Fixed it for you?
Feel free to pm my wife here for more info. She goes by Alexis's. Just make sure to include me in the pm as she doesn't check in here very often.
I'm not sure if there's a 50mm 1.2 lens out there for the nex, but that would be my goto. 35mm can feel a bit cramped.Dunno. That's a good question. What's your thoughts? I know the layout guys will probably have some really good ideas on how to organize everything.

People still use coffee tables? Why of course when you have a book this nice to put on it! (Ikea Lack coffee table can be found for $20 when on sale ;))
I'll get a few compliments but not too many.

Once I have pricing from Asukabook, let's see what your contacts can do for comparison pricing. I know Asukabook is going to be a premium, but I'm not sure how much of a premium they are yet.

As far as dividing it up, that's a good question. While guys who have done layout would know what feels best from that perspective, I'd like to also hear thoughts on what works for us from a reader perspective.
The glossary is kinda a neat idea. But with all the terminologies we have, wouldn't it become a bit of hairball?
Just need someone to take pictures of my keyboards for me :'(
I would personally like it to be something (aesthetically) like the following:

It doesn't look like that anymore. I have 3 boards not in my signature cuz I have no updated picture of them.

Sorry, her avatar here is Alexiss. Wasn't paying attention to autocorrect. She got in touch via PM. :thumb:
I don't think dividing the book up too much is a good idea either, there needs to be some order and category but this is an artistic medium and as such, I think order should be something that is subtle.I agree that this should be an art book above all else.
I also have been saving my favourite keyboard shots for a while now and will upload them to an album sometime in the future. The only issue is who's photos they are. I just use them as wallpapers etc... Also to show people how cool the hobby is (thankfully, when I get this book I will have physical pictures to show people :D)
I would personally like it to be something (aesthetically) like the following:I like the professional look of that book and I agree that we should be on that level, although with an artistic stance since these are more works of art than something technical in nature.

Australia please :)
A glossary or a few pages dedicated to "the basics" parts of a keyboard, common nomenclature, etc. would be a really good idea.I agree that consistancy will be important for professionalism. This morning I thought of this as a standard line below each photo:
As far as the little blurb with credit + watermarks sections it is really easy to make something simple and effective as long as its consistent throughout the book, consistency is very important to making something look professional.
I think sorting shouldn't be a focus but if it were up to me I'd try to randomize keysets as much as possible due to them being a very big visual aspect of a board. and better to just have different styles of boards every picture to keep the book interesting, I know i'd get bored of seeing 20+ pages of the same korean custom over and over with different sets or vice versa just seeing og cherry beige every photo over and over to be very boring and uninteresting to flip through, for this randomness is better in my opinion!
Also a +1 to the idea of having some "build log" esque pages/section they in my option when photographed well are some of my favourite posts I see and show that there's work put into these beauties and to show the effort put in. :p
Image quality (not photography skills) is going to be a big barrier for what gets in. Sourcing from imgur, facebook, and some other sites wont work well for print if the image is compressed. Sourcing original images will be key if this is to turn out well and DPI on everything will need to be checked, some images will look lovely on a computer screen then print out looking pretty bad. I am willing to help out as much as my school timetable allows checking photos, designing any of this if my help is needed as long as my school schedule permits it..
Another note is on what SamirD said saying this needs to be a cross-community project for it to be its best so put aside any negativity related to this to make the best damn picture book we can. :thumb: :p
Interested in a copy.Noted!
100% Agree. Definitely could get some tech communities to hype it up, and get the word out about keyboards!Hmm...I never thought of any community outside of keyboarding to have an interest. What do you have in mind?
I agree with kiwi about gathering photographs from multiple communities which might be very beneficial. Most definitely. Then it becomes a work the whole community can enjoy. :thumb:
http://www.speedhunters.com/2012/10/the-speedhunters-photography-book-is-here/I love the concept with this book, although the automotive genre has much, much, much more media than what we do in the keyboarding community. I should know--I was publishing almost 50,000 photos online a year when I was working full-time on my automotive site.
I think the pricing on this is whay off... I put together a pretty thin (90 or so pages) large (coffee table) hardback book for mine and my gf's two year ann and it was full of full page colour photo's and for a single run cost almost £100. Which is nearly $200.Interesting feedback. We don't have any real pricing yet (I got a reply from Asukabook, but haven't had time to read it), so it could be way out there. Obviously we'll have to figure out a way to get the pricing down to a reasonable level or this project dies right there. And I intend to make it possible.
To think that you'll be able to produce a book of similar size, but twice the thickness for $25 seems to me like your expecting to shift thousands or you just made the number up.
Another thing, I was part of the pretty small Soulwax/2manydjs community and the forum admin made a smaller pocket book that contained every single/EP/album they ever put out, that was soft cover and about the size of a CD Jewel case, and cost about $50.
I've been thinking of doing a hardcopy of the BroCaps Cat for a while, but the costs are really quite high for low run productions, and if you want a coffee table type book the costs are going to be insane.
Since no one has really come up with any solid ideas for layout etc I decided to throw some ideas out there.Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/Wr5Dggh.jpg)
My mum is into home design and style etc.. and she has a lot of these coffee-table-esk type books that look really nice and are very well made. What we are looking for I assume (well I am). This one in particular is my favorite in many aspects. To begin with it is a perfect size. 26cm tall by 19cm wide.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/wj5kNdI.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/suHaHc2.jpg)
It also has this brilliant cover.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/aPNZR4u.jpg)
You see that the cardboard is on the outside instead of the inside, which makes it easy to bend as its not stretching anything and thus wont break the spine like a lot of cheaper hardcovers. It also gives it a unique look among other books. It has modest colours yet isnt boring.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/WkTC5V1.jpg)
While I think the inside title is a little too busy for what we are doing I like the use of type writer font and think it would be nice to put on the inside of a book on keyboards. Kinda like heritage or something.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/iVJQMVX.jpg)
It's also got these cool dividing pages for each chapter that are transparent, similar to baking paper. They are neat. I think they'd be coolShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/Et7syXI.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/BSOEJON.jpg)
They may or may not fit. But I think they are awesome.Show Image(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1465/24131010236_8b21d8e290_h.jpg)Show Image(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1607/24157080285_46051d167c_h.jpg)Show Image(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1574/23861423220_90d52e5ff8_h.jpg)
It is also the book that I took these photos on.
On the subject of dividing up the book I do think that we should have it separated into each switch type. I think what we should have each chapter begin with is a large macro shot of the switch, edge to edge on the left page and on the right page have a paragraph or few on the switch and its history with a patent design included as to help the reader better understand how the switch works. Here are a few examples of patents.Show Image(http://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/pages/US4118611-1.png)
IBM Buckling Spring http://www.google.com/patents/US4118611Show Image(http://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/pages/US4467160-1.png)
Cherry MX http://www.google.com/patents/US4467160Show Image(https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/pages/US4642433-1.png)
Alps SKCM Blue https://www.google.com/patents/US4642433
This is where I'm unsure of how to use the transparent dividing paper. Perhaps have a large picture of the patent on the transparent page between a macro of the switch and the description on the right? I will do a few mock ups of the layout that we could use tomorrow. For now I am very tired.Show Image(http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0490/7329/products/zealios2.jpeg?v=1451552555)
I've also always remembered Zeal's shots of his zealios and how fantastic they were, specifically the book he shot them on. I was instantly hooked on how cool the book looked. I love the type face. Its crisp and clean.Show Image(http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0490/7329/products/zealios3.jpeg?v=1451552555)
These are also some of my all time favorite shots. They are extremely well composed, have great colour and catch the eye. So I am submitting these also to be included in the book (obviously we will have to get Zeal's permission first of course)
On another note, there will be plenty of shots for each category, and I think maybe a segment at the back for light reading would be nice. Something along the lines of an interview or a story of a few members that are quite prominent. I don't think a build log would really suit this book. That is for the forum. But definitely some nice photos of a build in progress or other work that is done by the community. Perhaps this is something that we can ask of the koreans? Like a few shots of a KMAC/OTD/Corsa etc being milled. Of course also things from mod/build logs themselves, there is plenty of brilliant photos from that category.
Speaking of categories, perhaps something along the lines of this?
-MX (because there are many different kinds now, not just cherry. Perhaps this is something that can be put into the description of the MX switch? i.e. touching on the different varieties?)
-Buckling Spring
-Alps
-Other (Rare or unorthodox switches)
-Community work (i.e. build logs/mod logs)
-Stories etc
-Glossary
I think things like artisans can be included throughout the chapters. We have BS caps, MX caps, Alps caps (perhaps not enough artisans in this area???) and we can include the making of these in a chapter like community work or stories. I don't see the need to dedicate one chapter to them
Finally I think if there are going to be a few volumes of this I think that they should be a gradual thing. i.e. Not released on a schedule. Have a thread open were people can post things that are note worthy in the keyboard community. Not a great deal happens in one year. Especially for keyboards. I think a bit of a history change needs to occur to warrant another one of these being made. They need to be special and very unique, and released when it feels ready.
Also, a lot of these books that my mum has bought are minimum of 45-50 aud. And I don't mind paying more for a quality coffee table piece. I don't want to pay 20 usd dollars for a crap book (not trying to offend OP) that I leave on the coffee table because I love my hobby. I want it to be a book that someone might buy just because its interesting, even if they are not a huge fan of keyboards. We spend hundreds of dollars on caps and HHKB and many more hundreds on custom boards. I'd pay 50 usd for a GREAT book, cause this is a hobby that I enjoy and I'm proud of.
Edit: I will go through a few more of these books and post the layout ideas at a later date
100% Agree. Definitely could get some tech communities to hype it up, and get the word out about keyboards!Hmm...I never thought of any community outside of keyboarding to have an interest. What do you have in mind?
I honestly believe the cost of this book everyone seems to want will be insane and no one will be willing to pay for it
I honestly believe the cost of this book everyone seems to want will be insane and no one will be willing to pay for it
^-^
I honestly believe we're thinking way too broad here, who is going to give a **** about a book with pictures of keyboards if it is not their interest/hobby. I personally would just like a geekhack book that shows the best of what the community has and maybe make a few volumes as years go by.
I agree. Maybe a few title pages for sections (cherry, ibm, topre, etc) and a small caption for some pictures, but really this should be some sweet keyboard picturesI honestly believe the cost of this book everyone seems to want will be insane and no one will be willing to pay for it
^-^
Haha I don't remember saying that.
I do agree though, people are are trying to turn this into the god damn dictionary for keyboards and wanting to fill it with everything possible. The more that gets added the higher the cost. I wouldn't mind have a small book with nothing but pictures of some high end boards. Even then still not entirely sure since there have been no quotes for the price yet. Even the NASA book that Glenmeal linked was $79 on the kickstarter to get one book and there are thousands upon thousands of backers involved.
We have a lot of excitement for this project, and that always brings a lot of ideas to the table, which is a good thing.Happily!
The challenge will be trying to incorporate what we can into this current volume and what that should be. The good thing is that there's a lot more here that we can expand on in future volumes, so this is a cool project that can keep rolling on.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, the first thing we're going to need is content. We've only got 6 pictures in the submission gallery so far, so right now the book is a pamphlet, lol. Need moar!
I like this shot too KaminKevCrew if you want to submit it:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/pKGmxvG.jpg)
I honestly believe we're thinking way too broad here, who is going to give a **** about a book with pictures of keyboards if it is not their interest/hobby. I personally would just like a geekhack book that shows the best of what the community has and maybe make a few volumes as years go by.

I want the speedhunter book and cars aren't my hobby
I don't even own a car

From my experience at least 99% of my friends and family think my keyboard hobby is a joke, I honestly can't think of one person that I know irl that would buy the book other than myself. You first took interest in the book from Zeal's pictures, I'm assuming you'd want it for a nice background for your pics, the cars themselves are just an added bonus to look at. Even if that's not the case I know for sure that you like to collect art and what not from showing me the previous paintings/posters you were showing me. If people are perfectly find with typing on their membranes at work then I highly doubt they'd give two ****s about this book.

His posts are actually what led me to explore keyboard customization and eventually GH! I specifically remember it was the Calm Depths one that made me go "Yep. I need that in my life." Before I knew anything about keyboards.
He has a great eye for themes and executes them better than anyone.

I'm in for a copy for sure and agree that it's probably best to keep it small for starters. Though I don't see any reason not to open submissions up to the other forums. Then we can include a little forum logo and username for each photo.
It might be nice to have a double page spread of someone talking about whatever is in the picture; an example being a vendor or someone that built a board talking about their journey and why the love it.
I'll get a few compliments but not too many.
You will once GH snaps out of its artisan cap circle jerk phase.
Dunno. That's a good question. What's your thoughts? I know the layout guys will probably have some really good ideas on how to organize everything.
I'd arrange them by the type of switch they are using: buckling spring, MXs, Alps, Topre, Hall effect… It would be nice to have a short introduction of each of these sections explaining the technology used.
Inside these sections, you could arrange them by size/layout. I personally believe that the pictures shouldn't have a watermark but a description of the picture itself with model, case, keycaps, artisans, and obviously the name of the owner of that board.Time to buy a new lens for the camera...
My new goal is to take a sexy enough photo to get in that book -.-
I think 50mm are the best for these kind of shots.

I think credits with forum association will only help to divide rather than unite. It also puts submitters in a bit of a situation if they're an active member of more than one community. I think the credit format I posted earlier with a 'by XXX from YYY, photo by ZZZ' after it with XXX=board owner's credit, YYY=owner's location (country may be enough), ZZZ=photog credit should be good. And all of these credits are what the owners/photogs want--there's no need to be too strict in this area. :cool:I'm in for a copy for sure and agree that it's probably best to keep it small for starters. Though I don't see any reason not to open submissions up to the other forums. Then we can include a little forum logo and username for each photo.
I agree. I'd suggest to put credits at the end of the book for each photo instead of watermarking, etc, to keep it clean so you don't see a bunch of forum logos everywhere. Instead, maybe a small name/description beneath each photo, then at the end, each name corresponding to the submitter/forum. Also, this way there will be less immature quarrels over which forum has more photos and stuff like that.

I agree. Put an acknowledgement to the different forums at the end, but just leave it with names/usernames in the book. That was what I was thinking as well--have the forum community urls listed in the back like a 'for further reading' type of thing.
How about sorting them by year the board was released/built? I think you would get a very nice chronological mix without making it very technical. Not a bad idea, but we'll definitely have to get more photos submitted before we have to worry about structure.
The forum itself doesn't matter. I'm a member on both Geekhack, Deskthority as well as Reddit but I wouldn't want to be linked to just a single forum.
No watermarks. Unless these are put in a black area right be to the photo.
Remember the board that was given to Bunny with all the different logos etched on the back? A bit like that.
It would be great to have as many people as possible to participate in the book no matter which forum they come from and it. Personally I think that the photos should only include the information about the keyboard, owner, and photographer the forum is irrelevant, specially if the objective is to gather as many people as possible like the Korean community.Exactly my thoughts about as many people as possible. :thumb:
As soon as SamirD figures out the guidelines (submission format, structure, sections…), and everything is set up I would suggest to contact Deskthority, /r/MK and KBDmania mods to gather as many pictures as possible.
Submission is original jpg in the highest resolution (submission link in first post), structure and sections is tbd since design isn't my forte and will require someone else in the community to spearhead. I really don't see a reason why we can't go ahead and ask mods now to point us to the owners of the great photos. The submission gallery is open and we'll need content before we really can get into layout and design. For printing I really would suggest trying to get truly original photos (i.e. Camera RAW, tiff, EPS) if available jpgs sacrifice a lot of things that can effect print quality I can't tell you from a professional standpoint but the guy I know who publishes hates jpeg with a passion haha . This is a little reading I found searching "why not to use jpeg" and it outlines it pretty well I think.
RAW and uncompressed formats like tiff and eps are great, but they're not what most people shoot. The problem with RAW is that it has to get into a 'processed' format like jpg for it to be usable/viewable, and there's so many variables on how to 'develop' the file that its best to leave that up to the photog.Submission is original jpg in the highest resolution (submission link in first post), structure and sections is tbd since design isn't my forte and will require someone else in the community to spearhead. I really wish I had a nice camera so I could participate =/You don't need a camera. You don't even need a keyboard! Just find great photos and let the owners know about this project to submit their great photos for inclusion in the book. :thumb:

I've uploaded a **** tonne of photos. I'm not sure if any of them will be any good.
Is it pretty much set that you're going with landscape orientation?I don't think the orientation is set. Also, with 'flat' binding options available, a single landscape image can span across two pages seamlessly. I still have to look at Asukabook's reply as well as a PM with pricing in it. I can hit all this harder when I'm back home--right now work deadlines are starting to close in on me. :(
For the submissions that I've already made, I can easily resubmit them in any format you'd like, as we still have the RAW photos.Thank you! Some really cool stuff! There's so many images in there now. :thumb:

I like this idea!

I was. I think it's a perfect picture for a cover for a number of reasons:
Lots of switch types
Lots of profiles
Lots of different keysets
Lots of artisans
Perfectly laid out
Although it has no ISO >:D

I'm really interested in this. I've been working on a zine and so I've got a bit of experience with laying that out. If that's helpful to you I'd be glad to help out a bit.
I was hoping you'd see this project and lend your expertise. It would absolutely help to have the guy who's currently making keyboarding print media...

My zine is poorly laid out though so I'm sure we'd have to lean on booper's experience more than mine. But I'm happy to pitch in regardless :).
A coffee table book is an oversized, usually hard-covered book whose purpose is for display on a table intended for use in an area in which one entertains guests and from which it can serve to inspire conversation. Subject matter is predominantly non-fiction and pictorial (a photo-book). Pages consist mainly of photographs and illustrations, accompanied by captions and small blocks of text, as opposed to long prose.
Have ya'll see ComradeSniper's Flickr page? It's really underrated in terms of keyboard flicks and photography in general.
I haven't caught up on this thread yet but I will be uploading a few of my pics for consideration in the coming days. :) Can anyone TL;DR a timeline for this? Are we nearing an upload deadline that I should be scrambling to meet?

There really hasn't been any activity lately, I'm honestly not sure what's going on. It's been a few weeks since SamirD has commented on anything.
I'm all for this but don't see much traction yet. There's a lot that people want to throw into this book but the more pages=higher price. I personally would just love a book with some really nice custom boards on it, if this falls through I would try and get that done. Who knows maybe I can just make one for myself at least.

Haha maybe.
I definitely want to see what Samir can make of this. I see a lot of discussion of adding retail boards, artisans, etc. I'm mainly focused on getting some amazing customs, just the best of the best that we can do with keyboards for a picture book.
If you're still taking ideas, how about 100-200 pages with 3/4 different titles? Keyboards with Artisans, Custom builts, Oldies, Ergodoxes? Or im thinking too much..
Either way, each page with a picture should have the user's GH user in a small font in the bottom left.

Also, what makes ergodox boards worthy of their own section? I would think that we could at least include ergonomic keyboards in general, if we were going to do that (I'm not a big fan of the way that the ergodox looks though, so I may be biased.)

Now i think about it, 100-200 is a bit much.
I included ergodox as i would want a few pages dedicated to weirdly shaped boards that are still functional. I guess 'Ergonomic' would fit that. then other weirdly shaped 40/60% could be included too.
Is there any word back from the OP?

I am pro photographer, how can i Help?, i do Visual identity alot, i can do QC on the selected photos an alot more just pm me :)

IDK, that picture looks like it was taken with a mobile phone, not very impressed with your skills mate
OT: /u/ctzn_voyager does some amazing photographs as well, hope some of his shots will be included!

I've been quietly following this for a while, but now I'm left wondering... what's the status on this? Are we just compiling decent photos?
I'm very interested in this. I think it would be a cool to show off to home visitors as I definitely don't have a large enough bank account to show all my favorite keycaps/keyboards/artisans
I would suggest making a smaller coffee table book (less thick not overall dimensions) so as to get this out faster and maybe more consistently - maybe twice a year or quarterly. That way we can actually cover relevant keyboards rather than those that have been built ages ago.
How can I help? I'm a hobbyist photographer, not as pro as the guys above me, got a few keyboards, and have a small but growing YouTube channel.

original project been dead for a while it just gets necro'd every few months lol

I mean all in all, it can't be that hard to follow up. Aside from sourcing nice photos, it's just a matter of formatting pages, getting it printing, distrobu........ yeah I can see why this hasn't been followed up on.
Is someone spearheading this at the moment?

My team and I are pursuing this project, since it seems to be dead.
Here's a teaser of some (really) early designs. Full IC post sometime next month (we're getting rekt by convention season).

Oh wow, the response is very encouraging! :D.
Our first step is developing a full 10 page spread, and finalizing the cover. We'll be posting on deskauthority, reddit, and here, along with details regarding how to submit photos, etc.
We're figuring out what's the best way collect community photos, i.e which platform since hq photos are hard to xfer. We're also thinking of offering a keyboard to anyone who submits. Probably a hhkb or a kustom.
Our goal is at least 50 pages :). We're also considering ad buy ins to help reduce costs. We have ties with major keyboard companies that would probably be interested. Could also throw in goodies each order....being part of the only mechanical keyboard book in the world is a nice pr draw.
I do have a question, would people prefer a super high quality book, with a sleeve cover, embossing, hard cover 13x9, all the bells and whistles? Or something slimmer, such as paperback, smaller, less pages? We're not sure what this community would be willing to shell out.... This project could cost as much as $110 per book. It could cost $30 each but would be a lot smaller and lower quality.
We're currently tackling it as luxury photobook. If we get enough interest and support, I'll also be looking into embedding an actual switch into the book (yes it's possible, but will add a ton of cost). But if no one wants to pay that much for a bigger book, we could have the book be smaller, allowing us to use more pictures of lower quality. There's a lot of options. (I personally want the more expensive one)
Stay tuned guys! This project is definitely happening :).
I would prefer both a paperback and a hardcover. That way I can leave the paperback out on an actual coffee table or at work and not fear about people spilling actual coffee on it.
I'd pay ~$80-100 for a premium book. A few art books and Collector's Edition art books for games that I have were in that range.
Did this project die? This is something I'd love to have on my coffee table.
Oh wow, the response is very encouraging! :D.I'm so glad you were able to make more progress on this than I did. The same method I was using to gather the originals still works and we could use that as the gathering platform. Let me know. Progress, even if slow, is still progress. :thumb:

Yay! You're alive, SamirD. :) Sorry to hear about the turmoil and issues, but I'm glad you're at least doing okay.It feels good to still be here. :D It's not been easy, but you know what they say about that which doesn't kill you...it didn't kill you. :))
I swear I'll get around to submitting a slew of pictures to this project, SoonTM.
The next step for me will be to start working on the license agreement for publishing. That's kind of where I left off before.
I just stopped in the thread myself hoping to see something like this. I haven't even had a chance to think about the license agreement, so if you want to draft something and then PM it to me (just in the body is fine), that will be a start. I also have a license agreement I was going to use as a start so I can send that to you first if you want. Just let me know! The next step for me will be to start working on the license agreement for publishing. That's kind of where I left off before.
I always come back to this thread hoping for updates. Slow and steady wins the race I guess :p. If you want any help with the license agreement etc, I'd be happy to pitch in.

Sounds good! Although it's going to end up being after Dec 5th as the system I have it on isn't allowing me to remote access it. :(I just stopped in the thread myself hoping to see something like this. Now is a very busy time for me, but I would totally take a stab at this. Send over what you have, and I'll see what I can add (albeit I'm no lawyer...)
Would absolutrly pick up one, would prefer larger hardcover. (Eastern US)
OMG. I totally forgot about this thread. Glad to see this moving again =D
And that's why it lives on and is not a matter of if it will happen, but when. :thumb:OMG. I totally forgot about this thread. Glad to see this moving again =D
Every few months someone bumps the thread and a few new people get excited. It's slow moving at the moment, but tons of people are interested.

I'm glad you posted! I didn't send the document I had for the photo release to rubik...and now it's sent. :thumb:
Once he and I have reviewed it, do we have any attorneys specializing in intellectual property rights that can review the final before it's posted for execution by the image owners?
The ball is rolling... :thumb:

Received. I'll look it over tonight and see what I can add. I'll do some looking around on the GH irc channel for anyone with legal chops.
Anyone want to regularly encourage great photos in the Keycap and Keyboard Photography thread to submit for the book? There's always some really awesome stuff in there:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43865.0
As this gets back up and rolling, would you mind reviewing the original post of this thread for accuracy? Is the link in the OP still where we should be posting photos for the project, or will that be reworked at any point?Agh!! I don't know why I didn't see this post. :'(
Glad you're here! The idea is still alive even if the work on it is at a turtles pace...

I'll be honesty had no idea thread was necro when I posted hope this happens sometime!
Yep, this was my baby right before all hell broke lose in my work a few years back and I haven't gotten any personal free time since then to dedicate to any task. :( But that doesn't affect one of the largest parts of job--getting enough great photos submitted.Glad you're here! The idea is still alive even if the work on it is at a turtles pace...

This thread pops it's head up every so often. SamirD has a better idea of it's status, but I think we're mostly looking for picture submissions/legal work.
We also hope is happens sometime. Soon(TM)
Wasn't aware you were still looking for pictures and the rights to them, I'd be happy to provide a few of mine. Most definitely! The more the merrier! It will be nice to have a wide gamut of the keyboarding hobby represented. :thumb:
If I have anyhitng worthy you can have any pictures I posted ;DAwesome! Just hit the upload link: :thumb:
“invalid login” error when uploadingOh no! I just saw this post. :'(
I know it's been a long time in the making, but I think I know someone for design who will make this a stunning project and a recurrent project. :) Stay tuned!
Marcin Wichary is putting his finishing touches on the "Shift Happens" book about the history of keyboards. Releasing hopefully soon!Very cool! Definitely one for the library for those of us that love this stuff. :)

Glad to see you back around here! And very excited for this project to pick up again. I was just thinking yesterday about starting to plan my own iteration of this project - funny timing. If you could use a partner or some help in getting things rolling, let me know!As I heard in a movie somewhere, 'I never left'. :D Most definitely could use a partner--let me know what you're thinking and let's see if we can't pick this back up. :thumb:
Any chance to get a discord going for this project? Would love to follow this more closely!I didn't think of it, but sure why not? I've noticed that my post here has spread to other sites.
I also remember you commenting on one of my reddit posts to submit my photos :)
Hey from AustraliaOoooo...I never even thought about using vendors for distribution! That's a great idea! We could get the orders directly and then bulk ship to the vendors for in-person pickup if they have a retail location and are cool with allowing that to happen. I think the idea of selling to vendors for resale would just drive costs up since there would be another level of markup necessary for vendors to stock the books. But then again, I don't think the original cost of $20-25 can be hit now anyways thanks to everything changing how it has in the last 6 years. :-[
I’m sure a lot of us aussies would also love this. I’m from Victoria, also some Aussie vendors that may pick it up would be daily clack, switch keys or allcaps :)

Good to know! You mind reaching out to them and see what their thoughts are about being a pickup point? Then we could just ship a pallet or a big box versus having to ship to each person individually down under. :)I think allcaps is the only Australian vendor with an actual store. +1 for AllCaps being an Australian vendor.Thank you! The current state of the project is as posted in the OP (I try to keep it updated), so we're needing work on submissions, legal release, layout and publisher. Can always use more help especially if you know of any resources in any of these areas. :)
I uploaded a couple of photos for your consideration and I'll upload a few more. What's the current state of the project? Do you need any help?
