Having some issues with my pilot metropolitan now... When I uncap it and begin to write, there is usually some ink on the finger-gripping area, which leads to stained fingers. I've wiped it down a couple times with a tissue, and I've also tried grasping the nib assembly and tightening it clockwise. Is this just to be expected? I don't do anything crazy with the pen to jostle it around, it mainly stays upright in my messenger bag during the day.

your cartridge or filler is not completely seated sounds like?

That would make it leak inside the body not into the cap.

I think your funny. It's obviously not a Diamante because there are no blood stains from the diamonds cutting your fingers as you write. This is about how I expect it would write though as being diamond encrusted I cant imagine it's comfortable to hold.

Does anybody know of a fountain pen that just writes? Without scratching, skipping, late starting or being too dry?

Depends on your budget. Try a Faber Castell Loom; you can find one for $35 and the EF/F nibs are quite smooth. I've also had good experiences with Cross Townsend, Pilot Vanishing Point, Lamy 2000, Bexley Prometheus, Pelikan's 400nn, Montblanc 146/149 as well. All with F nibs.

Maybe I'll give Pilot Capless a second chance. The store should have a good returns policy though.

The pressure you cause when you pull the cap off may be pulling excess ink from the feed. It could also be from ink coming out of the feed as well due to pressure changes (airplane). You may need to pull the nib/feed and thoroughly soak/clean it out and re-seat it. Also, try a different ink.

Thank you for the multiple tips! At the moment I only have a single bottle of iroshizuku tsuki-yo (blue black) but I've read that some consider it to be a bit "thin" in consistency. I'm going to give the pen a thorough washing tonight and make sure everything is seated properly.

I have the most trouble finding a use for a fountain pen these days.

I do my calligraphy in the morning, but, for people who don't do that,   I never physically write anything for the rest of the day.

Even the forms i get to fill these days come in pdf.  and the checkbook, that's it..

I write on paper, mark up my notes, colour code, highlight written text and draw diagrams and pictures. This is much more convenient than using a PC or a smartphone.

Can anyone recommend any material for someone who literally was never taught anything other than print?

I would really like to learn and be able to write in cursive style, palmer method or something of the sort. I feel a bit embarrassed about my handwriting that looks to be done by a 6 year old.  :))

Same reason I thought about getting a nice pen.  I can write cursive but it's pretty bad and my print is also really bad.  With a good pen though I seem to write better.

Anyone want a free fountain pen? They're not anything fancy and from a bit of weird brand, but at least the brown one feels decently smooth. and I got them for $3.  :)

I've got this one https://www.amazon.com/Fountain-Chocolate-Espresso-Refill-Converter/dp/B01LVXOBDT/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1490719517&sr=8-9&keywords=zenzoi

And this one https://www.amazon.com/Unique-Fountain-Fine-Refill-Converter/dp/B01M7USFTK/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1490719517&sr=8-22&keywords=zenzoi

Anyone want a free fountain pen? They're not anything fancy and from a bit of weird brand, but at least the brown one feels decently smooth. and I got them for $3.  :)

I've got this one https://www.amazon.com/Fountain-Chocolate-Espresso-Refill-Converter/dp/B01LVXOBDT/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1490719517&sr=8-9&keywords=zenzoi

And this one https://www.amazon.com/Unique-Fountain-Fine-Refill-Converter/dp/B01M7USFTK/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1490719517&sr=8-22&keywords=zenzoi

pretty flamboyant choices there.. hahaha
I got some discount codes for them, I didn't chose the colours.  :))

Looking to buy another fountain here soon. Something a little bit fancier than the Lamy Al Star I have now.

Looking at either the Monteverde Mount Vesuvio or the Levenger Aero-D on Massdrop right now. Unless of course one of you beautiful gents/ladies is selling a nice fountain pen.

Here's how I've put a stop to my own pen buying..

If my penmanship has not improved since my previous purchase.. I will not buy a new pen..

I have a 3rd party verify this obviously,  so that I'm not tricking myself into thinking my calligraphy's gotten better.

I need to sell about half a dozen pens...
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. I have two Pilot Metropolitans and a Lamy Al-Star in anniversary copper (orange), with a few nibs for each. They're nice and certainly very attractive.

But I have to say -- I've stopped using fountain pens completely since having started using Pilot Juice and Uni-Ball Signo UM-151 gel pens in 0.28mm and 0.38mm.

They write absolutely beautifully, come in some truly beautiful colors (especially Green-Black, Lavender-Black, and Brown-Black), and are orders of magnitude more practical.

The Juice is really nice for having the being retractable (click) and having a spring-operated clip for attaching to pockets, clipboards, lanyards, etc.

They require no maintenance and write perfectly all the time. I don't have to fuss around with them, worry about ink bleed, or do anything but just write. I can't recommend them enough.

I'm also down to 0.2mm pencils, though it's pretty delicate. 0.3mm seems to be the sweet spot.

At one point I had a
custom Nakaya,
Pilot M90,
Sailor 1911,
Parker Vacumatic,
Waterman Serenite,
and some others I can't remember...

And they're all gone. Sold them all to fund some other hobbies, and many regrets were had. But I just ordered a cheapo Metropolitan to ease my way back in, and I imagine another Sailor is in the near future.

In the video, They talk about Passion for Lamy.. To build the brand around Passion.. and to Instill in its patrons pride..

That is the basis of marketing jewelery.  Or a roundabout way of saying,

=== How do we make people buy something they Can't use and Don't need.. ===

Similar to how watches have survived,  the goal is to attract middle class idiots slaved to a job which rob them of the time to create and foster their personal identity.

And so, they take their meager pays to BUY an identity in a product such as monteblanc or lamy or kmac..

It's the same schtick, only with extra frivolous german engineering...

It's like anything, these days. Look how many advertisements have nothing to do with the product itself.

Take this Apple HomePod ad for example:

The first half of the ad is just depressing, and when it finally gets to the product, it could be replaced with anything that plays music and not change... she could put on a gramophone for crying out loud.

As for pens, there is a certain kind of appeal people are drawn in to. For me, fountain pens are aesthetically pretty but awful to write with, especially for daily use. I have gel pens that write far better and without any fuss or consideration for paper type, etc.

I use pencil mostly anyways (engineering). I've recently found 0.4mm mechanical pencils, which are pretty well perfect. I also use 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9, for various purposes.

I might do an overview of all the writing instruments I have. I've developed quite the collection, though as with keyboards, there are some you just gravitate to.

I haven't seen any serious engineering done outside of CAD for 30 yrs..  except red pencil markups by the seniors, hahahaha

I guess the architect , model builder guy still draws and uses pencil..  But he's known as engineering-lite around the office..

hahahaha

Gel pens can't work at 45 degrees to paper or without pressure.
